Abstract:The development of marine resources is intrinsically linked to the utilization of various marine equipment. Among these, marine pipelines and cables are crucial for the exploitation of deep-sea oil and gas resources. Mooring cables, marine towed cables, marine umbilical cables, submarine cables, and marine pipelines are typical slender and flexible marine components. These slender marine flexible members present various dynamic challenges during laying, installation, and in-position operation. Facing these challenges, scholars from China and around the globe have explored theoretical, numerical, and experimental solutions to these challenges. The conclusions need to be condensed to improve their practical and academic value for engineering applications. This paper summarizes the explorations and provides general design methods and concepts of marine pipelines. Additionally, this paper looks forward to the future development trend of marine pipelines in engineering applications as well as theoretical research. The aim is to provide a reference for the research of underwater pipelines and cables.
Ocean drilling and major advances in marine geological and geophysical research of the South China Sea

Abstract:The South China Sea (SCS) is the largest marginal sea in the Western Pacific Ocean. Major advances in understanding SCS tectonic processes have been made in the last several decades, especially through the implement-ation of five international ocean drilling expeditions during 1999-2018 and the "South China Sea Deep" major re-search program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2011-2019). Critical data have been acquired and important scientific results have been obtained, which have changed our view of how the SCS marginal sea basin developed and evolved. Major progresses have been made in multiple aspects: (1) the SCS is proposed as a new type of "plate-edge rifting" model, which differs from the classic Atlantic-type "intra-plate rifting" model; (2) Ocean drilling obtained the SCS basement basalt samples for the first time, which together with the first deep-towed magnetic survey, enabled the determination of SCS basin ages and revealing that the SCS seafloor spreading propagated stepwise from east to west; (3) Magmatism appeared rapidly during thinning of lithosphere in the SCS northern margin, in sharp contrast to serpentinite exposure by relatively slow rifting of the Atlantic Ocean; (4) Mag-matic activity is still significant after the cessation of SCS seafloor spreading, being controlled by multiple tectonic and mantle processes; (5) Geochemical evidence and geodynamic simulations show that the SCS magmatism is af-fected by the surrounding subduction zones. At present, marine geoscience research of the SCS is being extended to studies of its interaction with surrounding ocean basins. Through conducting large-scale research programs, build-ing ocean drilling platform, and strengthening international collaboration, China’s contributions to marine geoscience research are expected to increase.

Abstract:A comprehensive examination of the wave-induced oscillatory response of seabeds around structures is of great significance for ensuring the safe operation of marine engineering projects and enhancing the efficiency of marine resource development. Soil properties in nature exhibit spatial variability due to various geological processes, which should be considered in seabed stability analysis. An integrated CFD-SFEM is proposed for spatially heterogeneous seabeds, incorporating multi-physical solvers for nonlinear wave motion and poroelastic seabed response within a unified framework through a one-way coupling procedure. The wave sub-model for nonlinear fluid flow is based on RANS equations, with an internal wave-maker and absorbing layers realized by employing a momentum source function and damping source terms. The spatially heterogeneous seabed sub-model is based on Biot's poroelastic theory and the random field method. We have implemented the integrated model and automated the iterative algorithm for MCS using MATLAB codes, assisted by the LiveLink platform. The proposed method has been validated from various perspectives and applied to a study of soil response around a partially buried pipeline to demonstrate its practical utility. This study offers a novel framework and perspective for the probabilistic evaluation of oscillatory responses in spatially varied seabeds surrounding structures.

Abstract:Ocean mining activities have been ongoing for nearly 70 years, making great contributions to industrialization. Given the increasing demand for energy, along with the restructuring of the energy supply catalyzed by efforts to achieve a low-carbon economy, deep seabed mining will play an important role in addressing energy- and resource-related problems in the future. However, deep seabed mining remains in the exploratory stage, with many challenges presented by the high-pressure, low-temperature, and complex geologic and hydrodynamic environments in deep-sea mining areas, which are inaccessible to human activities. Thus, considerable efforts are required to ensure sustainable, economic, reliable, and safe deep seabed mining. This study reviews the latest advances in marine engineering geology and the environment related to deep-sea mining activities, presents a bibliometric analysis of the development of ocean mineral resources since the 1950s, summarizes the development, theory, and issues related to techniques for the three stages of ocean mining (i.e., exploration, extraction, and closure), and discusses the engineering geology environment, geological disasters, in-situ monitoring techniques, environmental protection requirements, and environmental effects in detail. Finally, this paper gives some key conclusions and future perspectives to provide insights for subsequent studies and commercial mining operations.

Abstract:In this review, we primarily address the present state of the arts and latest progresses in a few frontier issues mostly relevant to free surface/interface in ocean engineering. They include TC (tropical cyclone) induced extreme surface wave, sloshing of LNG (liquefied natural gas), cavitation/bubble dynamics and VIM (vortex-induced motion) and VIV (vortex-induced vibration). In addition to general description, we mainly focus on the recent advances and challenging aspects of above-mentioned topics. Inspired by the achievements in the previous 70 years, mankind starts a new round of ocean exploration activities. Then, we can find obvious trends: the realm of ocean engineering is expanding from sea surface to deep sea, from low and middle latitude to polar region and from fossil to renewable energy in near future.

Abstract:Several new types of deepwater anchors widely used in the world, including suction anchor, vertically loaded anchor, suction embedded plate anchor and dynamically penetrating anchor, are detailedly illustrated. Based on the overview of recent works at home and abroad, some key and hot problems are presented and discussed briefly, which are the seabed resistance and soil heave development during the suction penetration process of suction anchor, the anchor capacity in service, the drag trajectory of vertically loaded anchor and its capacity under a three-dimensional loading state, keying process of suction embedded plate anchor, installation depth of dynamically penetrating anchor and its pullout capacity. Hence, the deficiencies in current design, field installation and bearing mechanism can be recognized, aiming to explore the new developing trend of deep-sea anchoring foundations.

Abstract:With offshore resource exploration moving to the deep water, marine geohazards have been attracting attention from the academic and industry. Research achievements of marine geohazards were reviewed in this paper. We analyzed and discussed typical issues among marine geohazards, including coastal erosion, submarine slope failure, turbidity current and special hazards induced by gas hydrate dissociation, in terms of their definition, distribution, characteristics and case studies. Major international projects on marine geohazards headed by the United States, Europe, Japan and other international organizations are introduced as well. Three marine geohazard survey methods, including geophysical survey, geotechnical exploration and in-situ observation, were summarized with a brief description of each approach, respectively. Especially, the history of marine geohazard researches in China is briefly reviewed, showing the disparity between China and developed countries in the study of marine geohazards narrows gradually. The potential research tendency in future was suggested.

Abstract:The deep-sea ground contains a huge amount of energy and mineral resources,for example,oil,gas,and minerals.Various infrastructures such as floating structures,seabed structures,and foundations have been developed to exploit these resources.The seabed structures and foundations can be mainly classified into three types:subsea production structures,offshore pipelines,and anchors.This study reviewed the development,installation,and operation of these infrastructures,including their structures,design,installation,marine environ-ment loads,and applications.On this basis,the research gaps and further research directions were explored through this literature review.First,different floating structures were briefly analyzed and reviewed to introduce the design require-ments of the seabed structures and foundations.Second,the subsea production structures,including subsea manifolds and their foundations,were reviewed and discussed.Third,the basic characteristics and design methods of deep-sea pipelines,including subsea pipelines and risers,were analyzed and reviewed.Finally,the installation and bearing capacity of deep-sea subsea anchors and seabed trench influence on the anchor were reviewed.Through the review,it was found that marine environment conditions are the key inputs for any offshore structure design.The fabrication,installation,and operation of infrastructures should carefully consider the marine loads and geological conditions.Different structures have their own mechanical problems.The fatigue and stability of pipelines mainly depend on the soil-structure interaction.Anchor selection should consider soil types and possible trench formation.These focuses and research gaps can provide a helpful guide on further research,installation,and operation of deep-sea structures and foundations.

Abstract:Research in marine sediment dynamics and related disciplines has been carried out by the coastal engineers, physical oceanographers and marine geologists in mainland China. Some progress in this research field has been made over the last four years, in terms of sediment transport and deposition processes, new methods and techniques, coastal morphodynamics, and marine sediment records for global change studies. Further development of marine sediment dynamics in the near future is anticipated in the basic research about the formation of sediment systems, such as the processes of benthic boundary layer, sediment resuspension and transport. It is also anticipated that the science of marine sediment dynamics will be involved more deeply in the earth system and global change sciences, especially in the study of the sediment sequence formation, continuity of sedimentary record, the requirement of information completeness for the past climate and environment changes, coastal morphodynamic simulation and marine ecosystem dynamics.

Abstract:In our continuous exploration and exploitation of the ocean, marine robots are powerful tools for accessing oceanic environments that are sometimes harsh or even too dangerous for humans. Early marine robots acted under human supervision, executing preprogrammed tasks or working under the control of highly trained specialists. In recent years, with the advancements in hardware and software, marine robots have begun to possess the capability to autonomously sense and adapt to the intricate ocean environment, thus working more efficiently and intelligently. By integrating recent advances in science and technology, ranging from biomimetic technology and new materials to advanced artificial intelligence methods, marine robots have the potential to be more powerful in the exploration of the ocean environment and facilitating a broader spectrum of tasks, such as studying marine life in their natural habitats or performing inspections and dexterous manipulation in the deep sea.

Abstract:Pieces of charts of sea area in Zhoushan from 1933 to 2004 are studied.Digital evaluation model(DEM) of different period is established based on GIS.By superposing the different DEM,the erosion and deposition in waterway of Ma′ao port,longitudinal profile and anchorage is calculated.It is shown that,in general,the erosion and deposition is balance and the seabed is stable in this sea area.The deposition is little in front of the dock,which is good for the depth maintaining.

Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews

Abstract:Marine resources and energy exploitation has driven the advancement of floating structures, e.g., the oil & gas platforms, the floaters to support floating wind turbines. Mooring systems, encompassing mooring lines and anchors, are adopted to position the floaters and restrict their motions due to the environmental loads. The evolving diversity of floating structures poses new challenges to mooring systems, needing to be summarized for further development. This review introduces the recent advancements in the research and application of mooring lines and anchors, and some crucial issues related to design and analysis are discussed. First, the applications of floating structures are reviewed, and different types of floaters are compared based on the characteristics. Subsequently, the mooring system classification and shared mooring line and anchor are reviewed and discussed, and then design principles and analysis methodologies of mooring systems are summarized. Furthermore, mooring line components are discussed, the modelling and analysis methods of mooring lines are introduced. A critical threat to mooring safety, seabed trenches, is scrutinized. Finally, various anchors are compared and summarized based on their capacities and installation methods. Some problems related to anchor long-term capacities are discussed. This review provides a guide on further research and applications of moorings and anchors, which targets to benefit more precise mooring and anchor design, potentially prompting significant cost reductions in the deployment of floating wind turbines.
