Abstract:An overview of worldwide research on offshore renewable energy generation is provided in this paper.Most of the research focuses on single offshore renewable energy exploitation and utilization,which results in low energy efficiency and poor reliability of the power generation device. To solve these problems,a hybrid offshore renewable energy generation system,with a combination of offshore wind,wave,and tidal power generations,is proposed. Meanwhile,the research framework and the technological route are discussed,including the construction of the hybrid power generation system,the system modeling,and coordinate control of the hybrid offshore renewable energy generation system.

Abstract:Considering the rapid development of maritime logistics, the reduction of energy consumption at ports is important in the sustainable development of global economics. Oceans have been known as sources of clean energy, and wave energy is attracting more and more attention from both scholars and practitioners. Even though much effort has been made to develop advanced technologies of wave energy, it is still not clear how ports and electricity plants will evaluate its performance and make decisions on the investment. This paper analyzed the decision framework of ports and electricity plants that can decide how much to invest into wave energy converters, by considering the uncertainty of wave energy supply. A mathematical model is developed to obtain the optimal decisions of a single port and electricity plant for different cases. We show that in most cases, the port has a no lower motivation for investing in the wave energy than the electricity plant. Our theoretical analyses also shed light on the impacts of the parameters on the optimal decisions. Considering the difficulty in estimating the uncertainty of wave energy supply, we extend the distribution-free model to our problem which can make our model more practical.

Abstract:Under the background of marine strategy and clean energy strategy, China has carried out large-scale construction around marine ranching and offshore wind farms and made great achievements. However, the problems such as high project cost, the fragmentation of marine habitats and maritime conflict are becoming increasingly prominent, which have led to the test and exploration of integrated development of offshore wind farms and marine ranching at home and abroad. Based on the analysis of relevant research and test work at home and abroad, suggestions are put forward for the current situation of integrated development of offshore wind and animal husbandry, as well as the difficulties and challenges in economic and policy feasibility, site selection and planning, fish species selection, supporting equipment development, ecological impact assessment (noise, electromagnetic field, base interference, heavy metal migration, etc.), etc.

Abstract:The deep-sea ground contains a huge amount of energy and mineral resources,for example,oil,gas,and minerals.Various infrastructures such as floating structures,seabed structures,and foundations have been developed to exploit these resources.The seabed structures and foundations can be mainly classified into three types:subsea production structures,offshore pipelines,and anchors.This study reviewed the development,installation,and operation of these infrastructures,including their structures,design,installation,marine environ-ment loads,and applications.On this basis,the research gaps and further research directions were explored through this literature review.First,different floating structures were briefly analyzed and reviewed to introduce the design require-ments of the seabed structures and foundations.Second,the subsea production structures,including subsea manifolds and their foundations,were reviewed and discussed.Third,the basic characteristics and design methods of deep-sea pipelines,including subsea pipelines and risers,were analyzed and reviewed.Finally,the installation and bearing capacity of deep-sea subsea anchors and seabed trench influence on the anchor were reviewed.Through the review,it was found that marine environment conditions are the key inputs for any offshore structure design.The fabrication,installation,and operation of infrastructures should carefully consider the marine loads and geological conditions.Different structures have their own mechanical problems.The fatigue and stability of pipelines mainly depend on the soil-structure interaction.Anchor selection should consider soil types and possible trench formation.These focuses and research gaps can provide a helpful guide on further research,installation,and operation of deep-sea structures and foundations.

Abstract:The government of China has committed to bring carbon dioxide emissions to a peak before 2030 and to achieve carbon neutral before 2060 to tackle climate change. Renewable energy plays a key role in the energy strategy of China in order to achieve the targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring energy security. China has abundant offshore wind resource, distributed along its 18,000 km long coastline and 6000 islands. The first offshore wind farm of China was built in 2008 and put into operation in 2010. It provided green energy for 2010 Shanghai World Expo and then launched an era of offshore wind power development in the coastal areas adjacent to highly populated regions. Over the last decades, many thousands wind turbines have been installed, with an accumulated installed capacity of over 13 GW. This paper reviews the development of offshore wind power and foundation technology used for offshore wind turbines in China using published information, data, and web sources. An ongoing offshore wind farm project is taken as an example to describe the foundation technologies involved.

Abstract:Marine resources and energy exploitation has driven the advancement of floating structures, e.g., the oil & gas platforms, the floaters to support floating wind turbines. Mooring systems, encompassing mooring lines and anchors, are adopted to position the floaters and restrict their motions due to the environmental loads. The evolving diversity of floating structures poses new challenges to mooring systems, needing to be summarized for further development. This review introduces the recent advancements in the research and application of mooring lines and anchors, and some crucial issues related to design and analysis are discussed. First, the applications of floating structures are reviewed, and different types of floaters are compared based on the characteristics. Subsequently, the mooring system classification and shared mooring line and anchor are reviewed and discussed, and then design principles and analysis methodologies of mooring systems are summarized. Furthermore, mooring line components are discussed, the modelling and analysis methods of mooring lines are introduced. A critical threat to mooring safety, seabed trenches, is scrutinized. Finally, various anchors are compared and summarized based on their capacities and installation methods. Some problems related to anchor long-term capacities are discussed. This review provides a guide on further research and applications of moorings and anchors, which targets to benefit more precise mooring and anchor design, potentially prompting significant cost reductions in the deployment of floating wind turbines.

Abstract:Abstract With the drastic reduction of China's land and shallow sea oil and natural gas resources, offshore oil and gas field exploration has gradually developed into the deep sea of 1500-300 m. Traditional steel materials are no longer applicable, and fibre composite materials have become the most exploited in subsea oilfields. One of the good materials is widely used in all aspects of deep-sea oil field equipment, providing a reliable guarantee for the development of deep-sea oil and gas fields. Based on this research background, the paper discusses the characteristics of carbon fibre composite materials (light weight, high specific strength, high specific modulus, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, and small thermal expansion coefficient), and discusses its application in the field of subsea oilfields.

Abstract:Offshore oil and gas development plays an important part in the global energy sector. Offshore platforms and flexible pipes are the key equipments in the whole offshore oil and gas development system. Because of the randomness and uncertainty of wave and current loads in the ocean environment, the structural design and mechanical analysis of the marine equipment can be highly complicated. Therefore, this paper reviews the recent works of the theoretical model, numerical simulation, and experimental test in three research areas: hydrodynamic analysis of offshore platforms, structural mechanics analysis of flexible pipe and cable, and monitoring technology of offshore floating structures under marine loads. By analyzing their main research methods and key technical difficulties, this paper provides theoretical basis and technical support for the reliability engineering application of offshore platforms and flexible pipelines. Also, China is relatively backward in the design of marine floating platform, the design, analysis and testing of flexible pipeline and cable, as well as the marine equipment prototype monitoring technology research. Calling for breakthroughs at the earliest possible stage in the above fields, prime research should be focused on and strategic planning should be made to deal with "key areas and stranglehold problems". It is of great significance for the development of China's deep-sea energy and resource development of independent technology and on time to achieve the "carbon peak" national strategic objectives.

Abstract:The development of solar energy is one of the most effective means to deal with the environmental and energy crisis. The floating photovoltaic (PV) system is an attractive type because of its multiple advantages and has been well developed based on fresh water areas on land. This paper focuses on the expansion of this sector towards the ocean, offshore floating PV plants, which is the new growth point with huge potential for the future PV sector. For this new field, the technology readiness level is really low and research to understand the interaction between offshore floating PV plants and marine environment are proceeding. In this paper, we aim to discuss the technological feasibility of offshore floating PV plants as well as analyze potential impacts on the marine environment during the life cycle of PV from manufacturing until disposal.

Abstract:Offshore wind power construction is currently experiencing rapid growth worldwide, with China leading in the number of offshore wind turbines. Approximately 60 % to 70 % of these turbines are situated in the offshore area of the South Yellow Sea, Jiangsu Province. Despite its frequent exposure to waves and earthquakes, this region lacks comprehensive studies on the dynamic characteristics of local marine soils, which hinders the development of marine engineering design. This study addresses this gap by conducting a series of tests on marine silty sand using a combination of resonant column and dynamic triaxial tests. The investigation examined various dynamic parameters at both small and large strain scales, taking into account the soil's relative density, dynamic loading frequency, and cyclic stress ratio (CSR). The experimental results revealed that the attenuation of dynamic shear modulus aligns well with the classic H-D model. Moreover, the damping ratio exhibited an increase with cyclic loading until reaching a peak value at dynamic shear strains between 0.5 % and 0.8 %, followed by a rapid decrease due to liquefaction. Additionally, the failure behavior of the marine silty sand was found to be more sensitive to relative density than dynamic loading frequency under undrained shearing condition. The critical CSR for soil with a relative density of 73 % was approximately 0.18. Whereas for soil with a relative density of 53 %, it was about 0.12. The experimental findings provide valuable insights and parameters for the design of offshore engineering in this area.

Abstract:In recent years, the rapid development of the photovoltaic (PV) industry has resulted in a saturation of research on onshore PV power plant construction. However, current studies on the impact of marine PVs on the marine environment remain limited and scarce. In order to facilitate the implementation of carbon reduction goals and promote the sustainable development of the offshore PV industry, this study analyzes the environmental impact of PV sea-use resources based on spatial information technology in the western part of Gaotang Island. The findings show that the MIKE21FM model provides relatively accurate simulations of tidal flow and tide level in the marine PV area. Flow velocity in the marine PV area exhibits a decreasing trend, with an average decrease ranging from 0.03 to 0.07 m/s. This decrease minimally affects surrounding navigational channels and large-scale flow fields. The resulting siltation is also deemed less significant, with an annual deposition from 0.03 to 0.06 m/a. Moreover, offshore PV construction resulted in a total intertidal biological loss of 123.45 t. The suspension of sediment during cofferdam construction and removal has a potential effect on zooplankton and fishery resources. Overall, it is proposed that careful planning, prudent site selection, and the execution of countermeasures during marine PV construction will combine to minimize the impact on the marine environment.

Abstract:Ocean mining activities have been ongoing for nearly 70 years, making great contributions to industrialization. Given the increasing demand for energy, along with the restructuring of the energy supply catalyzed by efforts to achieve a low-carbon economy, deep seabed mining will play an important role in addressing energy- and resource-related problems in the future. However, deep seabed mining remains in the exploratory stage, with many challenges presented by the high-pressure, low-temperature, and complex geologic and hydrodynamic environments in deep-sea mining areas, which are inaccessible to human activities. Thus, considerable efforts are required to ensure sustainable, economic, reliable, and safe deep seabed mining. This study reviews the latest advances in marine engineering geology and the environment related to deep-sea mining activities, presents a bibliometric analysis of the development of ocean mineral resources since the 1950s, summarizes the development, theory, and issues related to techniques for the three stages of ocean mining (i.e., exploration, extraction, and closure), and discusses the engineering geology environment, geological disasters, in-situ monitoring techniques, environmental protection requirements, and environmental effects in detail. Finally, this paper gives some key conclusions and future perspectives to provide insights for subsequent studies and commercial mining operations.

Abstract:Offshore platforms deal with challenges brought by the marine environment, providing workplaces for oil production, wind energy, and marine research. Offshore platforms play important roles in the ocean development. Although there are still challenges such as stability, control, and sensing technology, offshore platforms hold the potential to further improve their performance and application value with the continuous progress in technology. This paper presents a summary of the present research status within the domain of offshore platform studies, introducing different types of offshore platforms from the perspectives of their applications and basic structures. In terms of technology, this paper presents the technical aspects and architectural framework of offshore platforms. Additionally, the applications of offshore platforms are discussed. Comprehensive analysis indicates that offshore platforms exhibit strong adaptability and stability in marine environments. With the advancement of technologies, the reliability and performance of offshore platform are expected to improve in practical scenarios. This paper may offer a reference for the research of offshore platforms.
