Abstract:An overview of worldwide research on offshore renewable energy generation is provided in this paper.Most of the research focuses on single offshore renewable energy exploitation and utilization,which results in low energy efficiency and poor reliability of the power generation device. To solve these problems,a hybrid offshore renewable energy generation system,with a combination of offshore wind,wave,and tidal power generations,is proposed. Meanwhile,the research framework and the technological route are discussed,including the construction of the hybrid power generation system,the system modeling,and coordinate control of the hybrid offshore renewable energy generation system.

Abstract:Clean energy has become an important component of the transition to a sustainable future, of which offshore wind power is a promising clean energy source. However, there are still gaps in the spatiotemporal data of OWTs with global coverage, precise location, freely available, and with long time series of installation time information. This study proposes a cost-effective method to investigate the global distribution and installation time of offshore wind turbines (OWTs) using remote sensing data and the GEE cloud computing platform. The process includes two parts, the first is OWTs extraction through synthetic SAR images using an adaptive Z-score threshold and morphological operations. The second part is installation time detection through synthetic Landsat optical images using LandTrendr algorithm. A total of 12,412 OWTs have been identified within the offshore Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) of countries worldwide, with 5915 in Europe, 6490 in Asia, and only 7 in the United States. Most OWTs are situated in nearshore areas and were constructed in a regular pattern. Installation dates of existing OWTs worldwide reveal an exponential growth trend since the 21st century, with Europe leading the way and Asia catching up rapidly, building two-thirds of its turbines after 2019. This information can be used for subsequent studies on the effectiveness of wind energy in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the potential for future development and expansion of wind energy infrastructure, as well as to inform policies aimed at promoting the sustainability of the wind energy industry.

Abstract:Long-term sustainable development of European offshore wind energy requires knowledge of the best places for installing offshore wind farms. To achieve this, a good knowledge of wind resources is needed, as well as knowledge of international, European, and national regulations regarding conflict management, marine environment conservation, biodiversity protection, licensing processes, and support regimes. Such a multidisciplinary approach could help to identify areas where wind resources are abundant and where conflicts with other interests are scarce, support measures are greater, and licensing processes are streamlined. An overview of offshore wind power studies at present, and of their future projections for the 21st century, allows for determining the optimal European locations to install or maintain offshore wind farms. Only northern Europe, the northwest portion of the Iberian Peninsula, the Gulf of Lyon, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the northwest coast of Turkey show no change or increase in wind power, revealing these locations as the most suitable for installing and maintaining offshore wind farms in the future. The installation of wind farms is subject to restrictions established under international law, European law, and the domestic legal framework of each EU member state. Europe is moving toward streamlining of licensing procedures, reducing subsidies, and implementing auction systems.

Abstract:Floating Modular Energy Islands (FMEIs) are modularized, interconnected floating structures that function together to produce, store, possibly convert and transport renewable energy. Recent technological advancements in the offshore energy sector indicate that the concept of floating offshore energy islands has the potential to become more cost-effective and more widespread than previously anticipated. This review is specifically meant as a basis for the development of new approaches to the sustainable exploitation of multi-energy sources in the offshore environment leveraging the know-how of existing technologies and, at the same time, exploring new solutions for the specific challenges of FMEIs. The paper critically analyzes the current state of data-driven approaches and structural health monitoring techniques in the offshore energy sector. It also covers topics such as met-ocean data, load estimation, platform dynamics, coupling actions, nonlinear dynamics of mooring lines, modelling considerations, and control of electrical subsystems. It is believed that this systematic and multidisciplinary review will facilitate synergies and further enhance research and development of offshore renewable energies.

Abstract:In recent years, due to the global energy crisis, increasingly more countries have recognized the importance of developing clean energy. Offshore wind energy, as a basic form of clean energy, has become one of the current research priorities. In the future, offshore wind farms will be developed in deep and distant sea areas. In these areas, there is a new trend of floating offshore wind platforms replacing fixed wind power platforms, due to their low cost, ease of installation, and independence from the water depth. However, the stability of offshore floating platforms is poor and their power fluctuations are significant; furthermore, they are more prone to failure because of sea wind, waves, and currents. This paper summarizes and analyzes the current research progress and critical technical issues of offshore floating wind power generation, such as stability control technology, integrated wind storage technology, wind power energy management, and long-distance transmission of electricity for floating wind power generation at sea. Finally, future research directions for key offshore wind power technologies are presented.

Abstract:The installation of offshore wind farms is rising, driven by the goal of changing the global energy matrix. However, many of their possible impacts are still unknown. Increased noise levels, disruptions to food chains, pollution due to traffic, and impacts on fishing communities and tourism are all potential effects to consider. Marine habitats are essential carbon dioxide sinks. Therefore, losing marine biodiversity due to offshore wind farms can be counterproductive in mitigating climate change. Balancing biodiversity conservation, wind potential, and political interests is challenging. Today, Uruguay has significantly decreased the fossil share in its electricity generation, incorporating electricity generation from wind, solar, and biomass energy alongside hydroelectricity. In line with this, the country's Hydrogen Roadmap highlights green hydrogen as relevant, potentially serving as a fuel for both domestic and export transportation. Combining the country's strong base of wind energy production experience with its sustainable policy, it plans to implement offshore wind farms to produce green hydrogen, making studies of its impacts crucial. This paper reviews the current social and environmental information on the Uruguayan coastal habitat, analyzes onshore wind farms' ecological studies, and examines offshore wind farms' global environmental and social impacts. Finally, it proposes studies for environmental approval of offshore wind farms.

Abstract:The maritime environment is the setting for a variety of economic activities, such as offshore wind energy, aquaculture, salt extraction, and oil and gas platforms. While some of these activities have a long-term presence, others require decarbonization as they head towards their demise. In this context, the aim of this study is to develop a methodology to replace the electrical energy from offshore high-emission industrial processes with clean electricity generated by offshore wind energy. The proposal is structured in three phases: initiation, which involves the collection of quantitative, technical, and geospatial information of the study area; indicators, where the main indicators are calculated, and the best alternative is selected using multi-criteria evaluation methods; and finally, short-, medium-, and long-term scenarios are proposed. The methodology is evaluated in Spain, and the best alternative, which has a nominal power of 225 MW, is capable of avoiding up to 1.44 MtCO2 by 2050.

Abstract:The global Offshore Wind Energy (OWE) industry is rapidly growing as the offshore wind resource has huge potential and is advantageous in many countries with the technology solutions becoming more cost-competitive. OWE simultaneously helps the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, an increase in energy security and diversity, creates jobs, and promotes sustainable development. Various enterprise opportunities and jobs will be created from the development of the supply chain, surveying and assessment of resource and environment and from maritime ports and logistics. These opportunities have been themselves challenges for the OWE industry. A number of measures to overcome those challenges are discussed in this paper. Offshore wind resources, marine ecology and seabed habitats urgently need to be surveyed and assessed at nationwide scales in order to plan zones for windfarm development, ecological conservation and maritime logistics. Advanced tools including LIDAR, coupled atmosphere-ocean models, surface heat flux models among others, and the use of Marine Spatial Planning and the study of the existing frameworks in other countries are recommended. Identifying the larger contribution areas of the supply chain and their bottlenecking challenges, detail costs breakdown, and the use of integrated and coupled models for analysis and design and control measures can effectively enable cost reduction. The supply chain and projects should be designed for the different offshore environment. Operational policies and technologies and energy storage can mitigate the dispatch-down of wind energy. A multi-contracting strategy is suggested for large utilities and the EPCI contracting for the independent or less experienced developers.

Abstract:Floating Offshore Wind Farms (FOWFs) are the most promising renewable energy resource. Floating turbines are installed at progressively increasing water depths, interacting with offshore and deep-sea ecosystems. Thus, specific criteria to enable a sound and accurate Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) are required. The still limited understanding of the impacts of FOWFs, and the concerns for the conflicts in the use of maritime space (e.g., fisheries), might lead to a more precautionary approach and constrain their development. Here we describe the characteristics of the deep habitats potentially impacted and identify a set of comprehensive and standardized criteria, response variables and approaches for a reliable EIA based on an Ecosystem-based approach. These analyses will support an appropriate design and site prioritization to respect the "Do No Significant Harm" principle. Considering the wide heterogeneity among habitats and geographic regions, we examined the potential interactions of FOWFs with i) Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems; ii) critical habitats; iii) migratory routes of large marine vertebrates; iv) habitat-forming species, benthic/pelagic organisms, v) migratory routes of birds/chiropters; vi) other human uses leading to cumulative/synergistic effects and any other potential interference. We identified mitigation and compensation measures and explored the potential of wind-farm areas as "Other Effective Conservation Measures" to support sustainable fisheries and passive restoration. Adequate siting, EIA and systematic monitoring can minimize FOWFs' environmental interactions, with final negligible, or even positive effects on marine ecosystems. Standardized criteria could significantly reduce the bottlenecks in permitting while offering a strategic vision for the sustainable use of the maritime space.

Abstract:Nowadays, wind is considered as a remarkable renewable energy source to be implemented in power systems. Most wind power plant experiences have been based on onshore installations, as they are considered as a mature technological solution by the electricity sector. However, future power scenarios and roadmaps promote offshore power plants as an alternative and additional power generation source, especially in some regions such as the North and Baltic seas. According to this framework, the present paper discusses and reviews trends and perspectives of offshore wind power plants for massive offshore wind power integration into future power systems. Different offshore trends, including turbine capacity, wind power plant capacity as well as water depth and distance from the shore, are discussed. In addition, electrical transmission high voltage alternating current (HVAC) and high voltage direct current (HVDC) solutions are described by considering the advantages and technical limitations of these alternatives. Several future advancements focused on increasing the offshore wind energy capacity currently under analysis are also included in the paper.

Abstract:Offshore wind energy is a sustainable renewable energy source that is acquired by harnessing the force of the wind offshore, where the absence of obstructions allows the wind to travel at higher and more steady speeds. Offshore wind has recently grown in popularity because wind energy is more powerful offshore than on land. Prior to the development of floating structures, wind turbines could not be deployed in particularly deep or complicated seabed locations since they were dependent on fixed structures. With the advent of floating structures, which are moored to the seabed using flexible anchors, chains, or steel cables, wind turbines can now be placed far offshore. The deployment of floating wind turbines in deep waters is encouraged by several benefits, including steadier winds, less visual impact, and flexible acoustic noise requirements. A thorough understanding of the physics underlying the dynamic response of the floating offshore wind turbines, as well as various design principles and analysis methods, is necessary to fully compete with traditional energy sources such as fossil fuels. The present work offers a comprehensive review of the most recent state-of-the-art developments in the offshore wind turbine technology, including aerodynamics, hydromechanics, mooring, ice, and inertial loads. The existing design concepts and numerical models used to simulate the complex wind turbine dynamics are also presented, and their capabilities and limitations are discussed in detail.
