Abstract:Through an integrated study of Mesozoic and Palaeozoic petroleum geology in southern China and a summing-up of the results of exploration, the authors tentatively put forward a set of methods of studying petroleum systems in modified residual basins or superposed basins. Its core idea is to put emphasis on the study of the dynamic evolution of petroleum systems. The tempo-spatial evolution, hydrocarbon-generating processes and hydrocarbon-generating intensides and amounts of resources in different geological stages of chief source rocks are mainly deduced backward by 3-D basin modelling. The regularities of formation and destruction of oil and gas accumulations are summarized by analyzing the fossil and existing oil and gas accumulations, the direction of migration is studied by palaeo-structural analysis, and the dynamic evolution of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic petroleum systems in southern China is studied according to stages of major tectonic movements. The authors suggest that the realistic exploration targets of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic petroleum systems in southern China are secondary and hydrocarbon-regeneration petroleum systems, while the existing primary petroleum systems are rare. They propose that the favourable areas for exploration of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic petroleum systems in southern China are the front area of the Daba Mountains and the steep anticlinal zone on the western side of the Shizhu synclinorium in northeastern Sichuan, the Funin-Yancheng-Hai'an-Xinghua-Baoying area in the northern Jiangsu basin, the Qianjiang-Xiantao-Paizhou-Chacan 1 well area in the southern part of the Chenhu area of the Jianghan basin, the South Poyang basin in Jiangxi and the North subbasin of the Chuxiong basin. This view has been supported by the discovery of the Zhujiadun gas field in the Yancheng subbasin of the northern Jiangsu basin and the Kaixiantaixi oil-bearing structure in the southern part of the Chenhu area of the Jianghan basin.

Abstract:Xingjiang area is strategic potential area of Chinese oil-gas resource. After 70 years' exploration, a series of large-scale oil-gas fields have been discovered in three basins: Junggar, Tarim and Tu-Ha of Xingjiang area, and currently we faced the issue to transfer our oil-gas exploration to new fields, including foreland thrust belt, lithological formation, deep and carbonate formations as well as new zones and their surrounding basin. The authors made analyses from following aspects: available oil-gas discovery, resource potential and petroleum-geologic conditions, and considered that these fields are major target fields of oil-gas discovery from now on.

Abstract:<p>Oil/gas exploration around the world has extended into deep and ultra-deep strata because it is increasingly difficult to find new large-scale oil/gas reservoirs in shallow to middle buried strata. In recent years, China has made remarkable achievements in oil/gas exploration in ultra-deep areas including carbonate and clastic reservoirs. Some (ultra) large-scale oil and gas fields have been discovered. The oil/gas accumulation mechanisms and key technologies of oil/gas reservoir exploration and development are summarized in this study in order to share China's experiences. Ultra-deep oil/gas originates from numerous sources of hydrocarbons and multiphase charging. Liquid hydrocarbons can form in ultra-deep layers due to low geothermal gradients or overpressures, and the natural gas composition in ultra-deep areas is complicated by the reactions between deep hydrocarbons, water, and rock or by the addition of mantle or crust-sourced gases. These oils/gases are mainly stored in the original high-energy reef shoal complexes or in sand body sediments. They usually have high original porosity. Secondary pores are often developed by dissolution, dolomitization, and fracturing in the late stage. The early pores have been preserved by retentive diagenesis such as the early charging of hydrocarbons. Oil/gas accumulation in ultra-deep areas generally has the characteristics of near-source accumulation and sustained preservation. The effective exploration and development of ultra-deep oil/gas reservoirs depend on the support of key technologies. Use of the latest technologies such as seismic signal acquisition and processing, low porosity and permeability zone prediction, and gas-water identification has enabled the discovery of ultra-deep oil/gas resources. In addition, advanced technologies for drilling, completion, and oil/gas testing have ensured the effective development of these fields.</p>

Abstract:With the discoveries of a series of large gas fields in the northeast of Sichuan Basin, such as Puguang and Longgang gas fields, the formation mechanism of the gas reservoir containing high H2S in the ancient marine carbonate formation in superposition-basin becomes a hot topic in the field of petroleum geology. Based on the structure inversion, numerical simulation, and geochemical research, we show at least two intervals of fluid transfer in Puguang paleo-oil reservoir, one in the forepart of late Indo-Chinese epoch to early Yanshan epoch and the other in the metaphase of early Yanshan epoch. Oil and gas accumulation occurred at Puguang structure through Puguang-Dongyuezhai faults and dolomite beds in reef and shoal facies in Changxing Formation (P-2 ch) - Feixianguan Formation (T-1 f) in the northwest and southwest directions along three main migration pathways, to form Puguang paleo-oil reservoir. Since crude oil is pyrolysised in the early stage of middle Yanshan epoch, Puguang gas reservoir has experienced fluid adjusting process controlled by tectonic movement and geochemical reconstruction process controlled by thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). Middle Yanshan epoch is the main period during which the Puguang gas reservoir experienced the geochemical reaction of TSR. On one hand, TSR can recreate the fluid in gas reservoir, which makes the gas drying index larger and carbon isotope heavier. On the other hand, the reciprocity between fluid regarding TSR (hydrocarbon, H2S, and water) and reservoir rock induces erosion of the reservoir rocks and anhydrite alteration, which improves reservoir petrophysical properties. Superimposed by later tectonic movement, the fluid in Puguang reservoir has twice experienced adjustment, one in the late Yanshan epoch to the early Himalayan epoch and the other time in late Himalayan epoch, after which Puguang gas reservoir is finally developed.

Abstract:The Chinese landmass, as a composite region, consists of multiple small continental blocks, such as Sino-Korea, Yangtze, Tarim, etc., and orogenic belts. Because of its distinctive tectono-sedimentary evolution, China's oil/gas-bearing regions differ remarkably from that elsewhere in the world. For instance, in comparison to the Middle East oil/gas-bearing regions which are characterized by Mesozoic-Cenozoic marine oil/gas-bearing beds, early oil and gas discoveries in China are distributed mainly in Mesozoic-Cenozoic continental sedimentary basins. Generation of oil from terrestrial organic matter, or terrestrial oil generation, and the formation of large oil/gas fields in continental sedimentary basins were previously the major characteristics of petroleum geology of China. However, in the past 20 years, a series of major oil and gas discoveries from marine strata have been made. Marine oil/gas fields in China are mainly distributed in the Tarim, Sichuan, and Ordos basins, which are tectonically stable and covered with Mesozoic-Cenozoic deposits. In these basins, hydrocarbon-bearing strata are of old age and the oil/gas fields are commonly deeply-buried. Cumulatively, 995 oil/gas fields have been found so far, making China the fourth largest oil-producing country and the sixth largest gas-producing country in the world. In terms of petroleum and natural gas geology, theories of hydrocarbon generation from continental strata, such as terrestrial oil generation and coal-generated hydrocarbons, etc., have been established. Significant progress has been made in research on the sequence stratigraphy of continental strata, formation mechanisms of ultra-deep clastic reservoirs, and hydrocarbon accumulation in the continental subtle reservoir. Regarding research on the marine petroleum geology of China, with respect to the major characteristics, such as deeply-buried reservoirs, old strata, and multiple phases of transformation, important advances have been made, in areas such as the multiple-elements of hydrocarbon supply, formation of reservoirs jointly controlled by deposition, tectonic activities, and diagenetic fluid-rock reactions, and oil/gas reservoirs formed through superimposed multi-stage hydrocarbon accumulation. As more and more unconventional hydrocarbon resources are discovered, unconventional oil and gas reservoirs are under study by Chinese petroleum geologists, who endeavor to come up with new discoveries on their formation mechanisms.
Diagenesis and Restructuring Mechanism of Oil and Gas Reservoir in the Marine Carbonate Formation, Northeastern Sichuan: A Case Study of the Puguang Gas Reservoir

Abstract:Based on the technology of balanced cross-section and physical simulation experiments associated with natural gas geochemical characteristic analyses, core and thin section observations, it has been proven that the Puguang gas reservoir has experienced two periods of diagenesis and restructuring since the Late Indo-Chinese epoch. One is the fluid transfer controlled by the tectonic movement and the other is geochemical reconstruction controlled by thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). The middle Yanshan epoch was the main period that the Puguang gas reservoir experienced the geochemical reaction of TSR. TSR can recreate the fluid in the gas reservoir, which makes the gas drying index higher and carbon isotope heavier because C2+ (ethane and heavy hydrocarbon) and 12C (carbon 12 isotope) is first consumed relative to CH4 and 13C (carbon 13 isotope). However, the reciprocity between fluid regarding TSR (hydrocarbon, sulfureted hydrogen (H2S), and water) and reservoir rock results in reservoir rock erosion and anhydrite alteration, which increases porosity in reservoir, thereby improving the petrophysical properties. Superimposed by later tectonic movement, the fluid in Puguang reservoir has twice experienced adjustment, one in the late Yanshan epoch to the early Himalayan epoch and the other time in late Himalayan epoch, after which Puguang gas reservoir is finally developed.

Abstract:The global hydrocarbon exploration targets and the research of petroleum geology tend to switch from mmμ m-size pore-throats of hydrocarbon traps to continuous hydrocarbon accumulation in the coexisting sources and reservoirs with nano size pore-throats.In recent 10years,the status of the unconventional petroleum resources is being more and more important in the global energy framework.The unconventional hydrocarbons,tight gas,coal-bed methane,heavy oil and tar sands have become major domains in the exploration development of unconventional hydrocarbons worldwide;tight oil has become an attractive domain for global exploration and development of unconventional oil;and shale gas has become a promising domain for the recovery of unconventional gas in the world.In China,the exploration and development of tight gas,shale gas,tight oil and coal-bed methane have significant breakthroughs and the studies of oil shales,gas hydrates and tar sands have been progressed greatly.Correspondingly,the unconventional hydrocarbon researches in recent years in China have processed a lot in following three aspects : ①depositional models of shallow-water delta sandbodies,central-basin sandy debris and lacustrine phase carbonates in large open depression lake basins;②innovation of unconventional continuous accumulation theory;③discovery and characterization of the nano size pore-throats in unconventional tight reservoirs.In terms of the rapid development of global petroleum industry and nano technology,this paper proposes a concept of nano hydrocarbons and indicates that nano hydrocarbon is the development direction of oil and gas industry in the future,urgently requiring developing vicarious technologies,such as nano hydrocarbon perspective viewing mirror,nano hydrocarbon displacement agent and nano hydrocarbon exploration robots.The time of petroleum intellectualization is coming to us.

Abstract:Large and extra-large oil/gas fields are mainly distributed in Tethys areas, passive margins, foreland thrust belts, and craton basins in the world. Unconventional oil/gas fields are mainly distributed in foreland slopes, basin (depression) centers, craton synclines, and tundra. Since the 21st century, the major exploration discoveries across the globe have been mainly concentrated in the deep water area of passive margins, carbonate rock, lithologic-stratigraphic zone, foreland thrust belt, mature exploration area, new basin and unconventional oil/gas reservoir (field). These major discoveries involve conventional and unconventional oil/gas resources. The conventional oil geology stresses the oil/gas migration and reservoir-forming rules in individual traps; the unconventional oil geology focuses on unconventional resources, reservoir, reservoir-formation and technologies. The geological features, classification program, research content, evaluation method and exploration phase of unconventional oil/gas reservoirs (fields) are different from those of conventional ones. Research should be strengthened on unconventional oil geology to develop unconventional oil geological theories.

Abstract:During the 12th“Five‐Year Plan” ,great breakthroughs in oil and gas exploration w ere made in Sinopec and technological innovative developments in seismic exploration ,ultra‐deep well drilling and completion ,horizontal well staged fracturing ,mud logging and well logging provided crucial support . Nevertheless ,some technical challenges will be encountered in oil and gas exploration in the future .For example ,it is hard to find new oil reserves for strategic replacement ,the quality of new reserves is degrad‐ed ,and burial depths increase w hile the geological complexity of exploration targets requires a higher engi‐neering technical requirement .Sinopec has committed to oil and gas exploration that will mainly target sev‐en kind of reserves including continental subtle reservoirs ,marine reservoirs ,tight clastic reservoirs ,pied‐mont reservoirs ,igneous reservoirs ,sea and unconventional oil and gas resources (shale gas) .T his paper presents a analysis of the main technical challenges in these seven types of reservoirs and identifies the ma‐jor technical research directions in geophysical exploration ,borehole stability ,mud logging and well log‐ging .

Abstract:The new century has witnessed a strategic breakthrough in unconventional oil & gas. Hydrocarbon accumulated in micro‐/nano‐scale pore throat shale systems has become an important domain that could replace current oil & gas resources. Unconventional oil & gas plays an increasingly important role in our energy demand. Tight gas, CBM, heavy oil and asphaltic sand have served as a key domain of exploration & development, with tight oil becoming a ‘bright spot’ domain and shale gas becoming a ‘hotspot’ domain. China has made great breakthroughs in unconventional oil & gas resources, such as tight gas, shale gas, tight oil and CBM, and great progress in oil shale, gas hydrate, heavy oil and oil sand. China has an estimated (223–263)×108t of unconventional oil resources and (890–1260)×1012 m3 of gas resources. China has made a breakthrough for progress in unconventional oil & gas study. New progress achieved in fine‐grained sedimentary studies related to continental open lacustrine basin large‐scale shallow‐water delta sand bodies, lacustrine basin central sandy clastic flow sediments and marine‐continental fine‐grained sediments provide a theoretical basis for the formation and distribution of basin central reservoir bodies. Great breakthroughs have been made in unconventional reservoir geology in respect of research methodology & technology, multi‐scale data merging and physical simulation of formation conditions. Overall characterization of unconventional reservoirs via multi‐method and multi‐scale becomes increasingly popular and facilitates the rapid development of unconventional oil & gas geological theory, method and technology. The formation of innovative, continuous hydrocarbon accumulation theory, the establishment of the framework of the unconventional oil & gas geological theory system, and the determination of the implications, geological feature, formation mechanism, distribution rule and core technology of unconventional oil & gas geological study lays a theoretical foundation for extensive unconventional oil & gas exploration and development. Theories and technologies of unconventional oil & gas exploration and development developed rapidly, including some key evaluation techniques such as ‘sweet spot zone’ integrated evaluation and a six‐property evaluation technique that uses hydrocarbon source, lithology, physical property, brittleness, hydrocarbon potential and stress anisotropy, and some key development & engineering technologies including micro‐seismic monitoring, horizontal drilling & completion and “factory‐like” operation pattern, “man‐made reservoir” development, which have facilitated the innovative development of unconventional oil & gas. These breakthroughs define a new understanding in four aspects: ① theoretical innovation; ② key technologies; ③ complete market mechanism and national policy support; and ④ well‐developed ground infrastructure, which are significant for prolonging the life cycle of petroleum industry, accelerating the upgrade and development of theories and technologies and altering the global traditional energy structure.
Source Rocks for the Giant Puguang Gas Field,Sichuan Basin:Implication for Petroleum Exploration in Marine Sequences in South China

Abstract:Detailed geochemistry studies were conducted to investigate the origin of solid bitumens and hydrocarbon gases in the giant Puguang gas field.Two types of solid bitumens were recognized:low sulfur content,low reflectance（LSLR）solid bitumens in sandstone reservoirs in the Xujiahe Formation and high sulfur content,high reflectance（HSHR）solid bitumens in the carbonate reservoirs in the Lower Triassic Feixianguan and Upper Permian Changxing formations.Solid bitumens in the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation correlate well with extracts from the Upper Triassic to Jurassic non- marine source rocks in isotopic composition of the saturated and aromatic fractions and biomarker distribution.Solid bitumens in the Feixianguan and Changxing formations are distinctly different from extracts from the Cambrian and Silurian rocks but display reasonable correlation with extracts from the Upper Permian source rocks both in isotopic composition of the saturated and aromatic fractions and in biomarker distribution,suggesting that the Permian especially the Upper Permian Longtan Formation was the main source of solid bitumens in the carbonate reservoirs in the Feixianguan and Changxing formations in the Puguang gas field.Chemical and isotopic composition of natural gases indicates that the majority of hydrocarbon gases originated from sapropelic organic matter and was the products of thermal cracking of accumulated oils.This study indicates that source rock dominated by sapropelic organic matter existed in the Upper Permian and had made major contribution to the giant Puguang gas field,which has important implication for petroleum exploration in marine sequences in South China.

Research progress and key issues of ultra-deep oil and gas exploration in China

Abstract:Based on the recent oil and gas discoveries and geological understandings on the ultra-deep strata of sedimentary basins, the formation and occurrence of hydrocarbons in the ultra-deep strata were investigated with respect to the processes of basin formation, hydrocarbon generation, reservoir formation and hydrocarbon accumulation, and key issues in ultra-deep oil and gas exploration were discussed. The ultra-deep strata in China underwent two extensional-convergent cycles in the Meso-Neoproterozoic Era and the Early Paleozoic Era respectively, with the tectonic-sedimentary differentiation producing the spatially adjacent source-reservoir assemblages. There are diverse large-scale carbonate reservoirs such as mound-beach, dolomite, karst fracture-vug, fractured karst and faulted zone, as well as over-pressured clastic rock and fractured bedrock reservoirs. Hydrocarbons were accumulated in multiple stages, accompanied by adjusting and finalizing in the late stage. The distribution of hydrocarbons is controlled by high-energy beach zone, regional unconformity, paleo-high and large-scale fault zone. The ultra-deep strata endow oil and gas resources as 33% of the remaining total resources, suggesting an important successive domain for hydrocarbon development in China. The large-scale pool-forming geologic units and giant hydrocarbon enrichment zones in ultra-deep strata are key and promising prospects for delivering successive discoveries. The geological conditions and enrichment zone prediction of ultra-deep oil and gas are key issues of petroleum geology.

Abstract:As a relatively stable craton block in the earth system, the petroliferous basin is influenced by the evolution of the earth system from the early development environment of source rocks, hydrocarbon formation, and reservoir dissolution to hydrocarbon accumulation or destruction. As a link between the internal and external factors of the basin, deep fluids run through the whole process of hydrocarbon formation and accumulation through organic-inorganic interaction. The nutrients carried by deep fluids promote the bloom of hydrocarbon-generating organisms and extra addition of carbon and hydrogen source, which are beneficial to the development of high-quality source rock and enhancement of the hydrocarbon generation potential. The energy carried by the deep fluid promotes the early maturation of the source rock and facilitates the hydrocarbon generation by activation and hydrogenation in high-mature hydrocarbon sources. The dissolution alteration of carbonate rocks and clastic reservoirs by CO2-rich deep fluids improves the deep reservoir space, thus extending the oil and gas reservoir space into greater depth. The extraction of deeply retained crude oil by deep supercritical CO2 and the displacement of CH4 in shale have both improved the hydrocarbon fluidity in deep and tight reservoirs. Simultaneously, the energy and material carried by deep fluids (C, H, and catalytic substances) not only induce inorganic CH4 formation by Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis and “hydrothermal petroleum” generation from organic matter by thermal activity but also cause the hydrothermal alteration of crude oil from organic sources. Therefore, from the perspective of the interaction of the earth’s sphere, deep fluids not only input a significant amount of exogenous C and H into sedimentary basins but also improve the reservoir space for oil and gas, as well as their enrichment and accumulation efficiencies.

Abstract:The onshore exploration realm has been continuously expanded to (ultra-) deep oil and gas recently in China. New comprehension and significant breakthroughs have been made in understanding generation and preservation conditions, reservoirs formation mechanisms, exploration potential, petroleum resources assessments, and exploration engineering technology of deep oil and gas. Deep oil and gas reservoirs include clastic, carbonate and volcanic settings. The temperature of deep oil can be up to 295 °C. Long term shallow burial and rapid deep burial at late stages help preserve the porosity in deep clastic rocks, and dissolution and fracturing effects improve their reservoir properties. Affected by faulting, hydrothermal karst processes, dolomitization and early oil and gas injection, carbonate rocks have good reservoir properties even at depths of 8 000 m. Controlled by tectonism, volcanism, diagenesis and diagenetic reconstruction during supergene and burial stages, primary and secondary weathering types of reservoirs develop deep volcanic reservoirs. Deep oil and gas resources in China are distributed mainly within three main practical areas of carbonate, clastic and volcanic areas. Dominated by gas, some of the more productive areas include the Tarim, Ordos, Sichuan, Junggar, Songliao, Santanghu and Bohai Bay basins. Deep oil and gas exploration in China has entered an age of breakthrough and discovery. Relevant engineering technology, such as ultra deep well drilling and ultra high temperature drilling fluid techniques have facilitated the ability to find (ultra-) deep oil and gas.

Abstract:Petroleum geology is evolving into two branches, conventional petroleum geology and unconventional petroleum geology, with the latter becoming a new theoretical frontier in the petroleum industry. The core of conventional hydrocarbon geological study is based on identifying the match between source rock, reservoir, caprock, migration, trap, preservation and timing; the core of unconventional hydrocarbon geological study evaluates if the oil and gas is part of a continuous accumulation, where stress is placed on the evaluation of “lithology, physical properties, brittleness, oiliness, source rock features, stress anisotropy” and their configuration. The oil and gas accumulation mode and theoretical formula at various low limits of pore throat diameter have been established, as well as the “L” type production curve. Theoretical production prediction models for unconventional oil and gas, and formation mechanism and development patterns for unconventional oil and gas are being revealed. The connotation, characteristics, potential and technology for unconventional oil and gas have been observed, and two key marks to identify unconventional hydrocarbon have been put forward: (1) continuous distribution of hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs over a large area, with no obvious trap boundary; and (2) no natural stable industrial production, and no obvious Darcy flow. Systematic research shows that the proportion of global unconventional to conventional hydrocarbon resources is 8:2, in which the unconventional oil is almost equal to conventional oil, and the unconventional gas is about 8 times that of conventional gas. In China, unconventional oil resources are about 240×108 t and unconventional gas resources are about 100×1012 m3. In recent years the development of tight gas and tight oil should be strengthened to realize industrial reserves and increase production. Construction of shale gas pilot plants and shale oil research should be strengthened. Unconventional oil and gas industrial systems and research should be set up, including unconventional hydrocarbon geology, fine particle sedimentology, unconventional reservoir geology, seismic reservoir prediction, massive fracturing of horizontal wells, “factory-like” operation, low cost management and subsidy policy and personnel training.

Abstract:China’s continental oil and gas geological theory occupies an important academic position in the world’s academic circle of petroleum geology. China’s oil and gas resources are dominated by continental resources. Chinese geologists have successfully explored and developed complex continental oil and gas, and developed a continental oil and gas geological theory system. This paper summarizes the development history and theoretical achievements of continental oil and gas geological theory since the 1940 s and proposes that the development of this theory should be divided into three stages（i.e., proposal, formation and development）. The China’s continental oil and gas geological theory has formed a basically perfect theoretical system consisting of five parts, i.e., continental basin structure theory, continental basin sediments and reservoirs theory, continental oil generation theory, continental oil and gas accumulation theory, and continental sandstone oil and gas field development geology. As an advanced geological theory, it has a universal significance globally. This paper focuses on the major discoveries of oil and gas exploration and development and the production growth in the basins of the Central and Western China in the past 30 years as well as the major advances in the continental oil and gas geological theory, including the continental basin tectonics of Central and Western China under the compression background, special reservoir geology such as various types of lake basin sedimentary systems and deep conglomerate, new fields of continental hydrocarbon generation such as coal-generated hydrocarbons, continental oil and gas enrichment regularity such as foreland thrust belts and lithologic-stratigraphic reservoirs, continental unconventional oil and gas geology and continental low-permeability oil and gas development geology. These major advances have greatly developed and enriched the continental oil and gas geological theory and become an important part of it.
