Abstract:The new century has witnessed a strategic breakthrough in unconventional oil & gas. Hydrocarbon accumulated in micro‐/nano‐scale pore throat shale systems has become an important domain that could replace current oil & gas resources. Unconventional oil & gas plays an increasingly important role in our energy demand. Tight gas, CBM, heavy oil and asphaltic sand have served as a key domain of exploration & development, with tight oil becoming a ‘bright spot’ domain and shale gas becoming a ‘hotspot’ domain. China has made great breakthroughs in unconventional oil & gas resources, such as tight gas, shale gas, tight oil and CBM, and great progress in oil shale, gas hydrate, heavy oil and oil sand. China has an estimated (223–263)×108t of unconventional oil resources and (890–1260)×1012 m3 of gas resources. China has made a breakthrough for progress in unconventional oil & gas study. New progress achieved in fine‐grained sedimentary studies related to continental open lacustrine basin large‐scale shallow‐water delta sand bodies, lacustrine basin central sandy clastic flow sediments and marine‐continental fine‐grained sediments provide a theoretical basis for the formation and distribution of basin central reservoir bodies. Great breakthroughs have been made in unconventional reservoir geology in respect of research methodology & technology, multi‐scale data merging and physical simulation of formation conditions. Overall characterization of unconventional reservoirs via multi‐method and multi‐scale becomes increasingly popular and facilitates the rapid development of unconventional oil & gas geological theory, method and technology. The formation of innovative, continuous hydrocarbon accumulation theory, the establishment of the framework of the unconventional oil & gas geological theory system, and the determination of the implications, geological feature, formation mechanism, distribution rule and core technology of unconventional oil & gas geological study lays a theoretical foundation for extensive unconventional oil & gas exploration and development. Theories and technologies of unconventional oil & gas exploration and development developed rapidly, including some key evaluation techniques such as ‘sweet spot zone’ integrated evaluation and a six‐property evaluation technique that uses hydrocarbon source, lithology, physical property, brittleness, hydrocarbon potential and stress anisotropy, and some key development & engineering technologies including micro‐seismic monitoring, horizontal drilling & completion and “factory‐like” operation pattern, “man‐made reservoir” development, which have facilitated the innovative development of unconventional oil & gas. These breakthroughs define a new understanding in four aspects: ① theoretical innovation; ② key technologies; ③ complete market mechanism and national policy support; and ④ well‐developed ground infrastructure, which are significant for prolonging the life cycle of petroleum industry, accelerating the upgrade and development of theories and technologies and altering the global traditional energy structure.

Abstract:Unconventional petroleum especially shale oil and gas have great geological reserves and large exploitation potentiality, and petroleum in shale reservoir has achieved industrialized production in North America. Because of the properties of low permeability and low porosity compared with conventional reservoir, new geological methods and advanced technologies should be employed for unconventional reservoir research. Based on the study of shale reservoir in Eagle Ford, Marcellus and Hawkville, this paper proposed a series of new approaches for exploration, evaluation and development of unconventional reservoir. Firstly, 2D and 3D seismic along with pilot well used to identify configuration and the boundary of the target basin, as well as the thickness and area of reservoirs. And then, core data were used to carry out log calibration so as to acquire comprehensive logging curve interpretation including logging data, petrophysical analysis data and seven properties of shale reservoirs. Combined with seismic identification technology, "sweet spot"and favorable reservoirs distribution were effectively predicted. Finally, geosteering was applied to allow the well to stay within the target window in reservoir, and combined with 3D seismic technology, designed scheme of hydraulic fracture stimulation for different geologic reservoirs. The successfully exploration of these new methods can provide reference for the exploration, evaluation and development of tight oil/gas, shale oil/gas and coalbed methane in China.

Abstract:By reviewing the development history of stimulation techniques for deep/ultra-deep oil and gas reservoirs, the new progress in this field in China and abroad has been summed up, including deeper understanding on formation mechanisms of fracture network in deep/ultra-deep oil and gas reservoir, performance improvement of fracturing fluid materials, fine stratification of ultra-deep vertical wells, and mature staged multi-cluster fracturing technique for ultra-deep and highly deviated wells/horizontal wells. In light of the exploration and development trend of ultra-deep oil and gas reservoirs in China, the requirements and technical difficulties in ultra-deep oil and gas reservoir stimulation are discussed: (1) The research and application of integrated geological engineering technology is difficult. (2) The requirements on fracturing materials for stimulation are high. (3) It is difficult to further improve the production in vertical profile of the ultra-deep and hugely thick reservoirs. (4) The requirements on tools and supporting high-pressure equipment on the ground for stimulation are high. (5) It is difficult to achieve efficient stimulation of ultra-deep, high-temperature and high-pressure wells. (6) It is difficult to monitor directly the reservoir stimulation and evaluate the stimulation effect accurately after stimulation. In line with the complex geological characteristics of ultra-deep oil and gas reservoirs in China, seven technical development directions are proposed: (1) To establish systematic new techniques for basic research and evaluation experiments; (2) to strengthen geological research and improve the operational mechanism of integrating geological research and engineering operation; (3) to develop high-efficiency fracturing materials for ultra-deep reservoirs; (4) to research separated layer fracturing technology for ultra-deep and hugely thick reservoirs; (5) to explore fracture-control stimulation technology for ultra-deep horizontal well; (6) to develop direct monitoring technology for hydraulic fractures in ultra-deep oil and gas reservoirs; (7) to develop downhole fracturing tools with high temperature and high pressure tolerance and supporting wellhead equipment able to withstand high pressure.

Abstract:As technologies advance in oilfield development, mature oilfields are able to keep sustainable production and complex oilfields difficult to produce in the past are put into production efficiently. In this work, new progresses of main development technologies for medium-high permeability and high water cut, low permeability, heavy oil, complex faulted block and special lithology reservoirs in the past decade, especially those international achievements made in enhanced oil recovery, were summarized, the key problems and major challenges that different oilfields are facing were analyzed, and the development route and direction of three-generation technologies were proposed as “mature technology in industrialized application, key technology in pilot test and innovative technology for backup”. The key research contents should focus on: (1) Fine water flooding and chemical flooding for mature oilfields, improving oil recovery after chemical flooding, and gas flooding for low permeability reservoirs must be researched and tested in field further. (2) Study on subversive technologies like nanometer smart flooding, in-situ upgrading and injection and production through the same well should be strengthened. (3) EOR technologies for low oil price, new fields (deep sea, deep layer, unconventional reservoirs etc.) and highly difficult conditions (the quaternary recovery after chemical flooding, tertiary recovery in ultra-low permeability reservoirs) should be stocked up in advance. The development cost must be lowered significantly through constant innovation in technology and reservoir management to realize sustainable development of oilfields.

Abstract:The ultra-low permeability oil reservoir in the HQ oilfield within the Ordos Basin exemplifies a classic "three-low" oil reservoir characterized by low pressure, low permeability, and low abundance. Upon the commencement of oil well production, substantial initial production decline and inadequate pressure maintenance levels are encountered. Consequently, these wells commonly face persistent low production issues resulting from ineffective water injection. Currently, the available technical approaches for repeated stimulation of such wells to enhance production and efficiency are limited, thereby restricting the effective utilization of the remaining oil reserves. In response to this challenge, this article presents an innovative technology tailored for high-efficiency re-fracturing to improve oil recovery in ultra-low permeability reservoirs. Grounded in the theory of multiple flow couplings and volume development, this technology introduces a novel integrated process encompassing seepage field reconstruction, fracturing, and oil displacement. This comprehensive approach culminates in an integrated energy replenishment methodology applicable throughout the entire reservoir's life cycle. The proposed technology materializes a novel development method for ultra-low permeability reservoirs, centered on the principles of "seepage field reconstruction, integration of fracturing and oil displacement, multi-mode energy replenishment, and all-round displacement". This integrated strategy ensures the efficient development of ultra-low permeability reservoirs. The successful implementation of this technology in the HQ oilfield is a notable achievement. Notably, the daily oil production of directional wells and horizontal wells significantly increased from 0.5 tons and 1.8 tons to 2.4 tons and more than 10 tons, respectively. Furthermore, the estimated ultimate recovery rate witnessed a substantial improvement from 5.2% to 17.3%. These compelling results underscore the potential of this technology in revitalizing the production of low-yield wells in ultra-low permeability reservoirs.

Abstract:Unconventional oil and gas resources have a promising development prospect due to their abundant reserves.The exploitation of them involves a series of micro/nano mechanical problems.To enhance the oil recovery,polymer flooding and nanofluid flooding are employed.The microscopic displacement mechanisms of these two methods have attracted wide attention.Shale gas,which is stored in adsorbed state and bulk state in the micro/nano pores of shale,flows into the fractures with the displacement of injection gases.Recent research progress of micro/nano mechanical problems in unconventional oil and gas exploitation based on our previous study was reviewed.The microscopic displacement mechanisms of polymer and nanofluid flooding were discussed.Then,the adsorption of shale gas,displacement of injection gases and the mechanisms of micro flow were reviewed.Finally,the direction and key point of future work were discussed.

Abstract:Petroleum geology is evolving into two branches, conventional petroleum geology and unconventional petroleum geology, with the latter becoming a new theoretical frontier in the petroleum industry. The core of conventional hydrocarbon geological study is based on identifying the match between source rock, reservoir, caprock, migration, trap, preservation and timing; the core of unconventional hydrocarbon geological study evaluates if the oil and gas is part of a continuous accumulation, where stress is placed on the evaluation of “lithology, physical properties, brittleness, oiliness, source rock features, stress anisotropy” and their configuration. The oil and gas accumulation mode and theoretical formula at various low limits of pore throat diameter have been established, as well as the “L” type production curve. Theoretical production prediction models for unconventional oil and gas, and formation mechanism and development patterns for unconventional oil and gas are being revealed. The connotation, characteristics, potential and technology for unconventional oil and gas have been observed, and two key marks to identify unconventional hydrocarbon have been put forward: (1) continuous distribution of hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs over a large area, with no obvious trap boundary; and (2) no natural stable industrial production, and no obvious Darcy flow. Systematic research shows that the proportion of global unconventional to conventional hydrocarbon resources is 8:2, in which the unconventional oil is almost equal to conventional oil, and the unconventional gas is about 8 times that of conventional gas. In China, unconventional oil resources are about 240×108 t and unconventional gas resources are about 100×1012 m3. In recent years the development of tight gas and tight oil should be strengthened to realize industrial reserves and increase production. Construction of shale gas pilot plants and shale oil research should be strengthened. Unconventional oil and gas industrial systems and research should be set up, including unconventional hydrocarbon geology, fine particle sedimentology, unconventional reservoir geology, seismic reservoir prediction, massive fracturing of horizontal wells, “factory-like” operation, low cost management and subsidy policy and personnel training.

Abstract:The progress in pore structure characterization, hydrocarbon occurrence state, mechanism of oil and gas accumulation, main controlling factors and high production model of unconventional oil and gas is reviewed. The unconventional oil and gas geological research developed from observation of the nanopores to quantitative full scale and 3D pore structure characterization, from macroscopic occurrence state study to microscopic occurrence state evolution discussion, from differential pressure drive and preferential channel migration to staged accumulation and wettability preferential migration, from accumulation controlled by source to accumulation jointly controlled by source-reservoir assemblage and preservation conditions, from accumulation model to enrichment and high production model, revealing the research progresses and future trends of unconventional oil and gas geology. Challenges are presented in unconventional oil and gas geological theory, enrichment conditions and recoverable resources potential of deeply buried unconventional oil and gas, combination of unconventional oil and gas geological research and engineering technique, and basic geologic research for joint mining of different unconventional oil and gas resources.

Abstract:Stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) fracturing has become the most efficient technology in the treatment of unconventional hydrocarbon reservoir formations. This process aims to optimize well productivity by establishing an intricate network of fractures that integrate hydraulic and natural fractures, distal to the wellbore, thereby amplifying the contact area with the subterranean formations and fracture systems. This study introduces a quantitative framework designed to characterize the fracturing effects within naturally fractured unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs. Leveraging existing fracturing treatment designs and production performance data, the study formulates a mathematical model of the complex fracture network, predicated on the principle of material balance. The model comprehensively accounts for the development degree of natural fractures, the morphological impact of stress differentials on the fracture network, and the imbibition displacement effects of the fracturing fluids. The model's accuracy is verified through an integration with microseismic monitoring data and an enhanced understanding of reservoir development. Building upon this foundation, the study quantitatively dissects the impact of various engineering parameters on the efficacy of SRV fracturing. The proposed quantitative characterization method is adept for widespread application across multiple wells in oil and gas fields, offering a distinct advantage for the swift and precise assessment of SRV fracturing outcomes in naturally fractured unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs. The research method, which is based on readily accessible fracturing construction data and is more convenient, can to a certain extent improve the efficiency of hydraulic fracturing evaluation work.

Abstract:Based on PetroChina's status and situation of low-permeability oil reservoir development, this paper analyzes the key common issues in the production capacity construction of new oilfields, the stable production of old oilfields, and enhanced oil recovery, and, in connection with the progress made in major development technologies and the results of major development tests for low-permeability oil reservoirs in recent years, puts forward the technical countermeasures and development directions. For optimizing the development of low-grade reserves, a comprehensive life-cycle development plan is essential, alongside experimenting with gas injection and energy supplementation in new fields. Addressing challenges in reservoir classification, multidisciplinary sweet spot prediction, and displacement–imbibition processes can significantly boost well productivity. In fine water flooding reservoirs, the focus should shift to resolving key technological challenges like dynamic heterogeneity characterization, and functional and nano-intelligent water flooding. For EOR, accelerating the application of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) advancements, along with air injection thermal miscible flooding, and middle-phase microemulsion flooding, is crucial. This approach aims to substantially enhance recovery and establish a new model of integrated secondary and tertiary recovery methods.

Abstract:Two main challenges exist in enhancing oil recovery rate from tight oil reservoirs, namely how to create an effective complicated fracture network and how to enhance the imbibition effect of fracturing fluid. In response to the challenges, through modeling experiment in laboratory and evaluation of field application results, a set of integrated efficient fracturing and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques suitable for tight oil development in China has been proposed. (1) Fracturing with temporary plugging agents to realize stimulation in multiple clusters, to form dense fracture network, and thus maximizing the drainage area; (2) Supporting induced fractures with micro-sized proppants during the prepad fluid fracture-making stage, to generate dense fracture network with high conductivity; (3) Using the liquid nanofluid as a fracturing fluid additive to increase oil-water displacement ratio and take advantage of the massive injected fracturing fluid and maximize the oil production after hydraulic fracturing.

Abstract:At present, the development of unconventional and low-permeability oil and gas reservoirs has become a hot spot of energy development at home and abroad. The typical feature of this kind of oil and gas reservoirs is that the reservoir permeability is very low, and certain transformation measures need to be taken before they can be put into operation. The reservoir volume transformation technology is one of the important technologies for the effective development of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs. In recent years, in order to improve the development effect of ultra-low permeability reservoir, Hailar complex fault block oilfield has carried out field application tests of volume transformation technology in different types of reservoirs year by year. By increasing the amount of fracturing fluid and fracturing sand, increasing the fracturing sweep volume and improving the reservoir seepage conditions, the effective production of the reservoir is realized. However, from the perspective of fracturing effects of different reservoirs, there will be great differences in fracturing effects under the same fracturing method. It shows that the effect of large-scale fracturing development of oil and gas reservoir is related not only to the fracturing mode, but also to the geological characteristics of the fracturing horizon. The in-depth study of the factors affecting the fracturing effect has important guiding significance for the development of low-permeability reservoirs.

Abstract:The proficient application of multistage fracturing methods enhances the status of the Duvernay shale formation as a highly esteemed shale reservoir on a global scale. Nevertheless, the challenge is in accurately characterizing unconventional fracture behavior and predicting shale productivity due to the complex distributions of natural fractures, pre-existing faults, and reservoir heterogeneity. The present study puts forth a Geo-Engineering approach to comprehensively investigate the Duvernay shale reservoir in the vicinity of Crooked Lake. To begin with, on the basis of the experimental results and well-logging interpretations, a high-quality petrophysical and geomechanical model is constructed. Subsequently, the establishment of an unconventional fracture model (UFM) takes into account the heterogeneity of the reservoir and the interactions between hydraulic fractures and pre-existing natural fractures/faults and is further validated by 18,040 microseismic events. Finally, the analysis of well productivity is conducted by numerical simulations, revealing that the agreement between the simulated and observed production magnitudes exceeds 89%. This paper will guide the efficient development of increasingly important unconventional shale resources.

Abstract:Summary Self-propping fracturing (in-situ proppant) has become an area of increasing interest in the development of fracturing technology over the past several years. In this paper, we review previous developments in this field and introduce latest research on self-propping fracturing technology. We identify the principles, key processes, and advantages behind the technology and introduce the properties of the liquids and solids involved. We developed a phase-change regulator and first carried out a physical distribution simulation test on the fluids and solids used. We also introduce the first-ever field test of self-propping fracturing liquid in volume fracturing of an unconventional oil well. This technology solves the technical difficulties associated with unconventional sand fracturing, especially those concerning the improvement of the fracture-controlled reserves. Its successful implementation provides new design concepts and advances technological change in the hydraulic fracturing industry.

Abstract:Abstract Deep oil and gas reservoirs enjoy great opulence in resources, and yet the ultra-deep burial, high temperature, high pressure and natural fractures in reservoirs bring great difficulties to propped fracturing. Given the challenge of propped fracturing in deep reservoirs, a new cost saving and high density fracturing fluid system was developed, of which the performance was evaluated and formulation was optimized, and with this fracturing fluid system, wells that cannot be treated before, can now be effectively stimulated. The advanced fracturing fluid system has been applied to eight layers in five wells, which all proved to be successful and effective, with remarkable reservoir stimulation efficacy. The post-production in the formation testing grew twice of the pre-fracturing production, and two wells were seen gas production exceeding one million cubic meters. The advanced fracturing fluid system greatly expands the well depth range of exploration and development, and lays a solid technical foundation for implementation of propped fracturing in deep reservoirs.

Abstract:With escalating global energy demands and the depletion of conventional oil reserves, the exploitation of unconventional oil reservoirs necessitates advanced recovery materials. Nanomaterials, due to their substantial surface-to-volume ratio and elevated surface energy, emerge as potential solutions to the challenges of ultralow permeability and intricate pore structures in these reservoirs. Despite copious laboratory research on nanosolid particles, nanosurfactants, and nanoemulsions, field data regarding their use in unconventional reservoirs remains scarce, hindering the development of a selection mechanism for optimal nanomaterial utilization across different production stages. Consequently, an exhaustive investigation into the characteristics, mechanisms, and field trial data of nanomaterials is paramount for enhancing recovery rates and economic efficiency and guiding the broader application of these materials in unconventional reservoirs. Therefore, this work reviews the characteristics and pros and cons of various nanomaterials in application. It elucidates several mechanisms of nanomaterials in enhancing recovery rates, such as increasing the viscosity of the injection fluid, reducing interfacial tension, changing rock wettability, especially altering oil flow, promoting spontaneous imbibition and expanding sweep efficiency. Furthermore, the paper also integrates the field application cases of the independently developed nanoemulsion in unconventional oil areas of shale in Xinjiang and tight oil in Jilin, China, to emphasize and illustrate the importance of matching different nanomaterials according to different stage extraction characteristics. Finally, this work looks forward to future research, advocating for a deeper understanding of the behavior of nanomaterials in unconventional oil reservoirs through the combination of physical and numerical simulation experiments, to optimize their performance and applicability in a wider industrial environment.
