Abstract:The exinites and microexinites in coals were quantitatively analyzed under fluorescent and con-focal laser microscopes,the 13 C NMR was performed on the compositions of the coals and the coal-bearing formations, and simulating experiments of maceral thermal evolution were carried out. According to the results, the control of the contents of methyl,α methylene and methine in hydrogen-rich ingredients and macromolecular structures of the coals on both the liquid and gaseous coal derived hydrocarbons were discussed, and the evaluation criteria for the gas and oil derived from bituminous coals at low thermal evolution stage were proposed. The majority of the coal-bearing basins in China are predominated by humolites rich in vitrinites and inertinites, which indicates that coal derived gas should be the exploration target in coal-bearing basins. Only a few coal-bearing basins with widely distributed coal layers rich in exinites and micrioexinites, such as the Turpan-Hami Basin, may be prospects for coal derived oil.

Abstract:Some typical coal and maceral samples are selected for oil and gas-generating systematic thermal simulation experiments, Rock-Eval, GC and GC-MS analyses. Results cause productivity curves of extracts and gaseous, light, liquid as well as total hydrocarbon. Effects of macerals and maturation on hydrocarbon productivities and compositions are synthetically discussed. Evaluation indexes and plan on coal-generated oil and gas in bituminous coal rank are suggested according to the data from experiments and analyses.

Abstract:Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel and is widely used as an energy source for combustion and gasification. Both experimental methods and computational tools are required for the development of new advanced, innovative clean coal technologies and systems. In particular, 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations can provide detailed local and global information on the interaction of fluid dynamics, mixing, and heterogeneous and homogeneous chemical reactions even for complex systems such as combustors, gasifiers, or chemical reactors. The predictive capabilities of CFD simulations depend directly on appropriate models and their mutual interactions. The current state of modeling is reviewed in this paper and the need for further improvements of both individual models and their respective coupling is addressed. In addition, to evaluate and validate the models and their interactions, systems with increasing complexity and well-defined boundary and operating conditions are required that can provide suitable experimental data. A number of reference burners and combustors, developed especially at universities and research institutions, are also presented and recent simulation data for these systems is reviewed.

Abstract:The ongoing spontaneous combustion of coal seams beneath the earth's surface leads to the exhaustion of nonrenewable resources and poses a substantial threat to environmental integrity. Precise and efficacious monitoring of subsurface coal fire activities is an indispensable precondition for the prevention and management of coalfield conflagrations, as well as for the exploitation of geothermal energy resources. The accurate detection and localization of covert coal fires depend on the procurement and analytical assessment of distribution data for parameters that are intrinsically linked to the activities associated with coal combustion. To this end, our review work investigated the theoretical foundations, application effects, and inherent limitations of the diverse detection techniques currently available. It has been observed that the ambiguities inherent to individual detection tools can be effectively mitigated through the cross validation of findings derived from multiple detection tools. The role of detection tools can be extended to the entire process of coal fire management, yet the distinct contributions of each tool throughout the various stages of the process warrant further investigation and elucidation. In addition, the potential of emerging technologies such as machine learning algorithms and 5 G networks to promote automation and intelligence in coal fire management work was also discussed. It is our hope that the insights presented herein will serve as a valuable resource for policymakers and stakeholders in the formulation of effective strategies for the prevention and control of coalfield fires.

Abstract:China's unique energy reserve structure abundant in coal and scarce in crude oil and natural gas has promoted heavy investment on the research and development of clean coal chemical technologies during last two decades, which has turned China into a heartland for demonstrating, developing, and commercializing virtually every aspect of new coal chemical process technologies. Consequently, breakthroughs in coal gasification, indirect and direct coal-to-liquid (CTL) processes, and methanol-to-ole-fins (MTO) technologies are catching attention worldwide. Gasification technology for syngas production is the key to high plant availability and economic success for most coal chemical projects. During the past 20 years, both international and Chinese gasifier vendors have reaped great successes in licensing their technologies in the domestic market. Notably, the local vendors have been investing heavily on inventing and improving their technologies to suit the specific requirement of gasifying a variety of coals. The opposed multinozzle gasification technology from Fast China University of Science and Technology was taken as an example to demonstrate the recent development in this field. The coal chemical industry in China has witnessed several notable achievements in chemical engineering progress, namely CTL (indirect and direct) and MTO. Comprehensive reviews on topics such as catalysis, kinetics, and reactor design and process integration will be provided by leading scientists in related fields with firsthand information to showcase the contributions of Chinese researchers to chemical engineering science and technology.

Abstract:Coal is the basic energy resource and strategic raw material in china. The project focuses on the fundamental study of some key scientific issues, which are needed to be resolved urgently during the developing process of gasificaton technology to large-scale, multi-adaptive materials, near-zero emissions etc. The project will promote gasification technology with self-owned intellectual property rights to be large-scale, highly efficient and clean, and support industry development such as synthesis of coal-based chemicals and liquid fuels, IGCC power generations, industrial hydrogen manufacturing, fuel cells, direct reduction iron-making and polygeneration systems, and ensure national energy security. The project is the objective requirements of the national economic and social sustainable development, and is very necessary and pressing. Key scientific problems of this program: The gasification kinetics of coal and other carbonaceous solids at high pressure and high temperature,the interaction mechanism of co-gasification,and the migration and conversion laws of harmful trace elements;The coupling mechanism, process intensification and flame structure characteristics of multiphase turbulence mixing and non-homogeneous reactions at high pressure and high temperature; The formation mechanism, rheological properties and heat transfer mechanism of slag at high temperature and reducing atmosphere; The preparation of high concentration slurry with a wide range of raw materials,and the pneumatic conveying characteristics and laws of super dense phase. Anticipated targets of this program: Improve theoretical system of the large-scale, high efficiency efficient and clean coal gasification process. Promote the theories of flexible raw materials gasification, the super-high dense phase conveying of coal and other carbonaceous solids via CO2, the preparation of high concentrated slurry through low rank coal modification , the co-gasification mechanism of multiple materials, the migration and transformation laws of hazardous elements, the multi-phase mixing and heat and mass transfer insider the gasifier, the slag flow and heat transfer at high temperature and high pressure, the integration and optimization of gasification system and other aspects. Use these theories to support the development of key technology and drive the gasification technology to transcend.

Abstract:China relies heavily on coal for meeting its huge energy requirements, and strives for the clean utilization of coal. In this paper, a bibliometric and visualized analysis is carried out to quantitatively evaluate the academic output of China's coal research during 2000–2015. All academic publications (in English-language journals) with “COAL” in the title by Chinese authors were extracted from the Web of Science (SCI-EXPANDED) database. After examining 16989 articles published worldwide, China's share reached 28.9% and its annual publications had a more than 15-times increase over this period. ENERGY FUELS, ENGINEERING CHEMICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES and GEOSCIENCES MULTIDISCIPLINARY were the major subject categories. The top 20 journals together accounted for 46.0% of the journal articles by Chinese authors. China held five academic entities among the world's top 10 active institutions, and CHINA UNIVERSITY OF MINING TECHNOLOGY, CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY, HUAZHONG UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY and TAIYUAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY were the five most productive research institutes. The rich and vibrant activity of China's coal research in nearly all aspects of coal science was identified by the Wordle word-cloud analysis, focusing on coal mining, coal gasification or pyrolysis, coal combustion and pollutant control. The word frequencies of COMBUSTION, GAS, MINE, GASFICATION, ASH, PYROLYSIS, COAL-FIRED, BED, POWER, PULVERIZED, MINING and METHANE were the prevalent topics. CARBON, WATER, EMISSION and MERCURY were more prominent than the decade before. The evolution of research hotspots displayed noticeable variations to suit the country's coal research demand. As an international center of coal research, the present capacities and potentials of Chinese scientific community will continuously influence future directions of global coal research and clean coal technology development.

Abstract:Mine gas accidents have received widespread attention at home and abroad, because mine gas accidents often cause casualties and property losses once they occur. This study was conducted in order to have a more comprehensive understanding of the research status of and research hotspots in coal mine gas management at home and abroad, and to provide references for relevant researchers' studies and literature searches. Using the Web of Science (WOS) core database as the data source, this paper analyzed the data from the period of 2000–2023 under the headings of "gas governance", "Gas Control Technology", "Pre-mining gas methods in coal mines", "Methods of Gas Mining in Coal Mines", "Post-mining gas", and "Post-mining gas methods in coal mines". "Methods in Coal Mines", "Methods of Gas Mining in Coal Mines", and "Post-mining Gas Methods in Coal Mines" were searched, and the CiteSpace tool was utilized to provide a multi-dimensional visual presentation of the literature, including authors, the number of journals issued, countries of issue, keywords, etc., in order to explore the research hotspots in this field. The analysis results show the following: the development process in the field of gas prevention and control is mainly divided into the three stages of initial exploration, steady development, and explosive surge; China, Australia, and the United States are the top three countries in terms of the number of articles published, and they have a greater influence in the field, but there is a closer connection between the regions in Europe; a certain group size has been formed by the researchers and research institutes in this field, the China University of Mining and Technology is more active in this field, ranking as the first in terms of the number of articles issued, and it has a cooperative relationship with many universities; Kai Wang and Enyuan Wang are the core authors in this field, while C. Ozgen Karacan also has a large body of research in the field, and his research results are widely recognized; the main journals issued in this field are Fuel and Energy Policy, while other journals have been frequently cited, and these journals have an important role in the field. In these journals, "Coal mine methane: A review of capture and utilization practices with benefits to mining safety and to greenhouse gas reduction" is one of the most important articles in the field. Thin coal seams, coal mining workings, and coal and gas protrusion are current research hotspots.

Abstract:In this paper, a systematic review of the research on functional groups in coal is presented. In recent years, the research on functional groups in coal has been extended from the macroscopic level to the microscopic layer, and a large number of studies have shown that functional groups have significant effects on various properties of coal, such as gas adsorption and spontaneous combustion. To understand the current status and future trends of research on functional groups in coal, this study analyzed 3956 papers on this topic published in the Web of Science (WOS) core database from 2000 to 2022. The spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of publications, authors, countries, institutions, and major journals were visualized using VOSviewer and CiteSpace. Keyword co-occurrence and burst analysis are used to reveal the research status and hotspots in this field. The results show that the development of research on functional groups in coal goes through three stages: the fluctuating development period, the steady development period, and the results explosion period; China, USA, Australia, Japan, and India are the most active countries in the field of coal functional groups research, and China has a greater advantage in the number of publications and influence. A core group of institutions, mainly research universities, has been formed in this field, and Fuel, Energy and Fuels and Fuel Processing Technology are the main source journals for published results on coal functional groups. At present, the framework of basic theories and research methods is complete, and the study of functional groups for gas adsorption, the analysis of the evolution of functional groups in the process of coal thermodynamic behavior, and the characteristics of functional group categories and distribution in coal are the main knowledge framework basis for the study of functional groups in coal. The research on coal functional groups has been extended to the molecular level, and in the future, quantum chemistry, molecular simulation, and fine characterization research of functional groups will become the frontier of research in the field of coal functional groups.

Abstract:As an unconventional natural gas, the calorific value of coal seam gas (CSG) is equivalent to that of natural gas. It is a high-quality, clean, and efficient green low-carbon energy source. Coal seam hydraulic fracturing is an important permeability enhancement measure in the process of CSG drainage. In order to further understand the overall research progress in the field of coal seam hydraulic fracturing, the Web of Science (WOS) database is used as a sample source, and the bibliometric analysis of the literature is carried out by CiteSpace software. The visual knowledge maps of the number of publications, the research countries, institutions, and keyword clustering are drawn. The research shows that it has gone through two stages of slow development and rapid growth in terms of time distribution. In terms of cooperation networks, the main active countries include China, the USA, Australia, Russia, and Canada, composed of China University of Mining and Technology, Chongqing University, Henan Polytechnic University, and China University of Petroleum as the core research institutions. Taking keywords as the theme, the coal seam hydraulic fracturing research field mainly involves high-frequency keywords such as hydraulic fracturing, permeability, model, and numerical simulation. The hotspot evolution law and frontier development trend of keywords with time are analyzed and obtained. On this basis, from a new perspective, the "scientific research landscape map" in the field of coal seam hydraulic fracturing is outlined, in order to provide a scientific reference for the research in this field.

Abstract:<p>Oil/gas exploration around the world has extended into deep and ultra-deep strata because it is increasingly difficult to find new large-scale oil/gas reservoirs in shallow to middle buried strata. In recent years, China has made remarkable achievements in oil/gas exploration in ultra-deep areas including carbonate and clastic reservoirs. Some (ultra) large-scale oil and gas fields have been discovered. The oil/gas accumulation mechanisms and key technologies of oil/gas reservoir exploration and development are summarized in this study in order to share China's experiences. Ultra-deep oil/gas originates from numerous sources of hydrocarbons and multiphase charging. Liquid hydrocarbons can form in ultra-deep layers due to low geothermal gradients or overpressures, and the natural gas composition in ultra-deep areas is complicated by the reactions between deep hydrocarbons, water, and rock or by the addition of mantle or crust-sourced gases. These oils/gases are mainly stored in the original high-energy reef shoal complexes or in sand body sediments. They usually have high original porosity. Secondary pores are often developed by dissolution, dolomitization, and fracturing in the late stage. The early pores have been preserved by retentive diagenesis such as the early charging of hydrocarbons. Oil/gas accumulation in ultra-deep areas generally has the characteristics of near-source accumulation and sustained preservation. The effective exploration and development of ultra-deep oil/gas reservoirs depend on the support of key technologies. Use of the latest technologies such as seismic signal acquisition and processing, low porosity and permeability zone prediction, and gas-water identification has enabled the discovery of ultra-deep oil/gas resources. In addition, advanced technologies for drilling, completion, and oil/gas testing have ensured the effective development of these fields.</p>
