Abstract:Development of plasma methods for chemical transformation of CO2and CH4 into useful compounds is of paramount importance from two standpoints of C1 chemistry and so-called green chemistry.Thermal plasma which has high temperature and high enthalpy was used to study carbon dioxide decomposition,methane decomposition and carbon dioxide reforming of methane.The results show that thermal plasma is an effective means for carbon dioxide and methane transform.The mutual promotion between carbon dioxide and methane in reforming process should be considered in order to obtain high conversion of CH4 and CO2,and high chemical energy efficiency.

Abstract:Experiments were conducted on syngas preparation from dry reforming of methane by carbon dioxide with a DC arc plasma at atmospheric pressure. In all experiments, nitrogen gas was used as the working gas for thermal plasma to generate a high-temperature jet into a horizontal tube reactor. A mixture of methane and carbon dioxide was fed vertically into the jet. In order to obtain a higher conversion rate of methane and carbon dioxide, chemical energy efficiency and fuel production efficiency, parametric screening studies were conducted, in which the volume ratio of carbon dioxide to methane in fed gases and the total flux of fed gases were taken into account. Results showed that carbon dioxide reforming of methane to syngas by thermal plasma exhibited a larger processing capacity, higher conversion of methane and carbon dioxide and higher chemical energy efficiency and fuel production efficiency. In addition, thermodynamic simulation for the reforming process was conducted. Experimental data agreed well with the thermodynamic results, indicating that high thermal efficiency can be achieved with the thermal plasma reforming process.

Abstract:At a time of striving for CO2-free power, NH3 becomes a potential energy storage carrier fuel from renewable sources. The reaction molecular dynamics (ReaxFF-MD) method was used to study the effect of CH4 reactivity on NH3 oxidation in an O-2/N-2 environment. The conversion process of combustion intermediates in the combustion process is explored. Under fuel-rich, stoichiometric, and fuel-lean conditions, at a temperature of 2400-3200 K, mixed combustion of NH3 and CH4 with different concentration ratios is simulated. Studies have found that ammonia combustion and methane combustion are not competitive reactions. After adding methane, the consumption rate of ammonia will increase, but the intensity of the reaction will decrease. After adding methane, H-2 is the product with the greatest impact on production. The H2O produced by the reaction will also participate in the subsequent reaction. Under different O-2 concentrations, the quantitative changes before and after the reaction can be concretely reflected by ReaxFF simulation, which lays the foundation for subsequent research.

Abstract:CO2 reforming of CH4 to syngas (H2 and CO) has emerged as one of the attractive options for mitigating carbon emissions. Here, a water‐cooled dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor has been constructed for CO2–CH4 reforming to produce syngas and value‐added chemicals. The effects of the main parameters (i.e., discharge power, CH4/CO2 molar ratio, and gas flow rate) on CO2–CH4 reforming were investigated. The highest conversion rate of CH4 and CO2 was found to be 40.57% and 27.15%, respectively, with CO and H2 selectivity of 56.07% and 43.71%, respectively. The total energy efficiency achieved was 0.28 mmol/kJ. C2H6 was found to be the main hydrocarbon product. Lastly, the mechanism of CO2–CH4 reforming was proposed in terms of the active species and products.

Abstract:The increasing utilization of CO2 for synthesizing high-value fuels or essential chemicals is a potentially effective approach to mitigating global warming and climate change. Compared to thermal catalytic CO2 conversion under harsh operating conditions (400∼500°C, 10 MPa), non-thermal plasma can overcome kinetic barriers and trigger reactions beyond thermal equilibrium at ambient temperature and pressure. In this study, the effects of operating conditions (discharge frequency, input power, and gas flow rate) and geometrical parameters (discharge length, discharge gap, and dielectric materials) have been extensively analyzed using typical cylindrical dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. The discharge characteristics changed by operating conditions (including waveforms of applied voltage and current) are compared, indicating higher applied voltage and lower gas flow rate can strengthen the filamentary discharges. The results demonstrate CO2 conversion rate increases with the increase of applied voltage and the decrease of CO2/H2 ratio, achieving its maximum value of 43.0% at 20 mL/min. The highest energy efficiency of 3771.9 μg/kJ for CO generation is obtained at the applied voltage of 5.5 kV and gas flow rate of 40 mL/min, respectively. Besides, the structure of plasma reactor also impacts the performance of CO2 conversion. On the one hand, the discharge gap has a significant role in the variation of CO2 conversion and product selectivity, which is attributed to the electric field density and corresponding electron-induced reaction. On the other hand, the circulating water-cooling jacket was used to find out the influence of reaction temperature, which switched the product from CO to CH4. This work will pave the way for a sustainable alternative towards future CO2 conversion and utilization.

Abstract:An experimental plasma chemical reactor, equipped with a novel water plasma torch, was used for reforming methane and carbon dioxide mixture to produce synthesis gas (syngas). Water plasma is generated by the torch at atmospheric pressure, in the absence of carrier gases, water cooling system and special steam supply system. The influence of the ratio of CO2 to CH4 and total feed gas rate on syngas production, composition and energy conversion efficiency were investigated. Compared to other plasma technologies, the higher reaction performance was obtained by the novel water plasma process. The results show that, under optimum experimental conditions, the energy conversion efficiency reaches up to maximum value of 1.87 mmol/kJ and the highest energy efficiency of 74.63% is achieved, which is higher than that of other plasma processes. Furthermore, the obtained syngas with high mole ratio of H2 to CO (close to 2) is suitable for the direct industrial application.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide and methane reforming using a unique DC arc plasma reactor without catalyst could achieve high conversions and selectivity in milliseconds.Very little coke was formed during the course of reaction.Influences of the total flow rate and molar ratio of CO2 to CH4 at an input power of 170 W were studied to find the optimum operating conditions.Increasing the input energy density promoted the conversions of reactants and reduced the formation of the by-products efficiently.The conversions of CO2 and CH4 reached 89.8% and 96.3%,respectively,and the selectivities to H2 and CO products were 99.6% and 99.3%,respectively,where the mole ratio of CO2 to CH4 was 1.Excessive CO2 could benefit the conversion of CH4 and result in the high selectivity to syngas.Specific energy requirement(SER)was used to express the energy utilization efficiency of the process,providing a practical guidance on optimization of reaction conditions to increase the energy efficiency.

Abstract:Global warming occurs as a result of the build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, causing an increase in Earth’s average temperature. Two major greenhouse gases (CH4 and CO2) can be simultaneously converted into value-added chemicals and fuels thereby decreasing their negative impact on the climate. In the present work, we used a plasma-catalytic approach for the conversion of methane and carbon dioxide into syngas, hydrocarbons, and oxygenates. For this purpose, CuCe zeolite-containing catalysts were prepared and characterized (low-temperature N2 adsorption, XRF, XRD, CO2-TPD, NH3-TPD, TPR). The process of carbon dioxide methane reforming was conducted in a dielectric barrier discharge under atmospheric pressure and at low temperature (under 120 °C). It was found that under the studied conditions, the major byproducts of CH4 reforming are CO, H2, and C2H6 with the additional formation of methanol and acetone. The application of a ZSM-12 based catalyst was beneficial as the CH4 conversion increased and the total concentration of liquid products was the highest, which is related to the acidic properties of the catalyst.

Abstract:An experimental plasma reforming reactor for conversion of CH4-CO2 to synthesis gas (syngas) has been developed, in which the plasma is generated by a nonthermal arc plasma torch with simple and compact structure. The effects of total flux of feed gases and the molar ratio of CH4/CO2 on syngas production, selectivities of H-2 and CO2 and energy conversion efficiency were investigated. It is proven that this kind of plasma is an effective way to reforming of CO2-CH4 with energy conversion efficiency of 5.25 mmol/kJ and energy efficiency of 81%. Moreover, the heat generated by the plasma can be fully utilized to activate catalyst.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide reforming of methane via plasma reactions has the double advantage of realizing energy conversion and protecting the environment. We studied the characteristics of AC corona plasma CO2-reforming reactions at atmospheric pressure. The effects of the CH4/CO2 ratios in the feeds, discharge power, and flow rates were investigated. The H-2/CO ratios in the products mainly depended upon the CH4/CO2 ratios, and they increased from 0.21 at 0.2 CH4/CO2 to 2.15 at 2.0 CH4/CO2. The conversions of CH4 and CO2 increased with increasing discharge power, whereas they decreased with increasing flow rates. Within the tested range, the conversions of CH4 changed from 67.5 to 90.5% and the conversions of CO2 changed from 45.7 to 78.5%. The conversions obtained in the reactor below 380 K were higher than the calculated data, resulting from equilibrium thermodynamics at 890 K. Comparing the experimental results with the calculated values, we speculate that corona plasma possibly has a high-temperature character and that the plasma reactions possess an inherent quenching mechanism; i.e., the gases were rapidly cooled as they flowed out of the corona plasma area. This quenching mechanism resulted in the corona plasma reactions possessing higher conversions. The H-2/CO ratios in the products could be used to support this hypothesis.

Abstract:Plasma-based dry reforming in an atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor has been thoroughly studied by combination of experiments and detailed kinetics simulation. With the assistances of in-situ optical emission spectroscopy (OES) measurements and reaction pathway analysis based on plasma kinetic simulation considering non-constant electric field and thermal effects, this study provided deep insights into the reaction mechanism of plasma-based dry reforming under varied feeding gas composition, gas residence time and operation temperature. A CH4 conversion as high as 44.76 % could be achieved without catalyst at 300 °C, with an SEI of 78 J/cm3 and feeding CH4 ratio of 50 %. Increase of feeding CH4 proportions were found to enhance the generation of C2 and C3 hydrocarbons. Consistently, the OES analysis showed that the relative intensities of spectra bands induced by deexcitation of CH, CO, and C2 also increased monotonically. With the same increment in SEI, increasing gas residence time led to larger promotions in CH4 and CO2 conversion, as being compared to increase of input power. The reason could be explained as that CH4 and CO2 molecules experienced more successive micro-discharges with a longer gas residence time, so more energy would be devoted into CH4/CO2 conversion, whereas more energy was dissipated into heat as rudely increased the discharge power due to the limit of reaction time. CO2 conversion continuously decreased with increasing gas temperature, owing to the recombination of CO and O enhanced at higher gas temperatures. Reaction pathway analysis showed that CH4 conversion was mainly induced by electronic dissociation and ionization at the discharge stage, while CO2 was mainly converted by recombination reaction CO2 + CH2 → CH2O + CO and also electron collision vibrational reaction e + CO2 → e + CO2(vn). The formation of C2 hydrocarbon products was supposed to follow the path of CH4 ↔ CH3/CH → C2H6 ↔ C2H5 ↔ C2H4 → C2H2.

Abstract:The reduction of CO2 emission is a key method for mitigating climate change. The safety of geologic storage of CO2 is still being valued. Sometimes overmuch electric energy come from clean energy, such as nuclear energy, need to be converted into chemical energy stored in hydrogen, liquid hydrocarbons, etc. CO2 can be used as the carbon resource in the energy conversion, and plasma technology can be applied. During the CO2 reforming of CH4, electric energy was converted into chemical energy stored in H2 and CO. In our experiments, more than 10% electric energy was converted into chemical energy through corona plasma technology. However, it is puzzling that the reactions always had high conversions exceeding the calculated values using equilibrium thermodynamics. Herein, we speculate that there existed a quenching mechanism in the corona plasma reactions, and it is possible to predict the highest efficiency of energy conversion via corona plasma method.

Abstract:CO 2 reforming of CH 4 via corona plasma reactions was studied at 1 atm. The H 2/CO molar ratios in the products strong depended on the CH 4/CO 2 molar ratios in the feeds. The discharge power, flow rate, and corona types showed slight influence on the composition of synthesis gas. Using AC corona plasma CO 2-reforming reactions, H 2/CO ratios in the products increased from 0.21:1 at 0.2:1 CH 4/CO 2 to 2.15:1 at 2:1 CH 4/CO 2. CH 4 and CO 2 conversions increased from 67.5 to 90.5% and from 45.7 to 78.5%, respectively. The conversions increased with increasing discharge power. Ni/Al 2O 3 and HZSM-5 zeolite catalysts used in the CO 2-reforming plasma reactions showed little effect on the conversions. Non-equilibrium plasma reactions may be applied to store electric energy from clean nuclear energy into chemical energy. Abstract:In this paper, the plasma coupled catalyst was used for the dry reforming of methane (DRM). The impacts of the reaction temperature, the molar ratio of CO2/CH4, and the concentration of the main gas components (N2, H2, CO, H2O) on the conversion rate of CH4 and the energy efficiency of plasma catalysis were observed. The results shows that the conversion rate of CH4 is 41.57%, with La-Ni/γ-Al2O3 as the catalyst, the reaction temperature being 450°C and the molar ratio of CO2/CH4 being 1.0, and without other gases. The conversion rate of CH4 increases with the increase of the molar ratio of CO2/CH4. The conversion rate of CH4 is 92.82% respectively during DRM by plasma catalysis, with the molar ratio of CO2/CH4 being 5.0. The reaction temperature and the molar ratio of CO2/CH4 have a significant effect on CH4 conversion. The excited particles in the system are influenced by the changes of gas composition, which affect not only CH4 conversion directly, but also the carbon deposition on the surface of catalyst. The addition of N2 and H2O in the reaction system not only improves conversion of CH4 but also inhibits carbon deposition; the addition of H2 and CO reduces the conversion of CH4 significantly. The results are expected to provide basic data and reference for the development of the synthetic process of chemicals through biomass gasification.

Abstract:Capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and transforming it into valuable fuels offers a dual benefit: the potential to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels and decrease our dependency on fossil fuels. Plasma‐assisted CO2 to carbon monoxide (CO) conversion stands out within the various CO2 recycling methods, with research primarily emphasizing its energy efficiency and conversion efficacy. However, investigations of CO2 conversion under real air conditions are relatively scarce, and the effects of the other atmospheric molecules on the CO2 conversion process require further exploration. We have induced plasma chemical reactions by generating ultrashort pulse laser filaments inside a sealed‐off cavity with variable air pressures. Simultaneously, we applied mid‐infrared laser absorption spectroscopy to monitor the time evolution of the reaction products. The peak CO2‐to‐CO conversion ratio was achieved at an air pressure of 8000 Pa, which resulted in a CO concentration of 82 ppm. The experimental results suggested that nitrogen (N2) plays a promoting role in CO2‐to‐CO conversion, while the presence of oxygen (O2) seems to hinder the process. The hydroxyl radical (OH) arising from water molecules (H2O) limits the accumulation of CO at lower air pressures. However, at higher air pressures, the reduced OH radical concentration shows negligible impact on the CO2‐to‐CO conversion ratios. In addition, the study revealed that atmospheric plasmas produce a high concentration of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), which is directly proportional to the levels of ambient humidity. This research contributes to the development of strategies to mitigate the production of harmful gases like HCN in CO2 conversion, thereby promoting the ecofriendly conversion of atmospheric CO2.

Abstract:In this study, the reforming of methane into hydrogen with oxygen and water vapor assisted by gliding arc discharge plasma was investigated at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The effects of excess air coefficient, gas flow rate and water vapor content were considered, and the by-products were also discussed. In the experiment, the selectivity of hydrogen can be achieved up to the maximum of 45.9% when excess air coefficient reaches about 0.8. The cost of producing hydrogen reaches the lowest point at 14L/min of gas flow rate. The injection of some water vapor could be better for the reforming reaction.

Abstract:Considering the inevitable high energy input to implement the CO2 reforming of methane under high-temperature operation using conventional catalysis method, the low temperature conversion of CO2 and methane in the coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor was investigated in this work. Steam was introduced to enhance the CO2 reforming of methane with synergetic catalysis effect by cold plasma and catalyst. The experimental results showed that a certain percent of steam could promote the conversion of both CH4 and CO2. Meanwhile, the carbon deposition was evidently reduced compared with the dry reforming of methane. With the increase of steam input, the steam reforming occurred predominantly. As a result, the hydrogen volume percentage in the product gases increased. In this way, the products with different H2/CO ratio could be achieved by changing the mole ratio of CH4/CO2/H2O at the reactor inlet. In particular, when the mole ratio of H2O/CH4 increased to almost 3 corresponding to the pure steam reforming process, the conversion of CH4 reached almost 0.95 and the selectivity to H2 was almost 0.99 at 773K.

Abstract:To meet the need of control and utilization greenhouse gases, CO, reforming of CH, over nickel-based catalysts was studied. It was found that the pretreatment of catalyst in hydrogen had a great influence on catalytic activity at low reaction temperature. A strong hydrogen spillover within studied catalyst was experimentally proved. The promoters such as rare earth, alkaline earth, Zr and Bi oxides showed a good effect on enhancing catalytic activity as well as prolonging catalyst life.

Abstract:CO2 conversion was controlled by the electron‐induced reactions and sensitive to the discharge pattern and the electron density. The type of the carrier gas had a significant effect on the electron density and further the CO2 conversion. In contrast, the formation of the products was governed by the thermo‐induced chemistry. Plasma‐induced CO2 hydrogenation process has received much attention, while the related plasma chemistry has not been profoundly explored. Herein, electron‐induced and thermochemical effects on CO2 hydrogenation in a dielectric barrier discharge reactor were investigated. The temperatures for the discharge pattern transition for CO2/H2, CO2/H2/N2, CO2/H2/Ar, and CO2/H2/He mixtures were 623, 623, 600, and 600 K, respectively. CO2 conversion was controlled by electron‐induced reactions and was sensitive to discharge pattern and electron density but not electron energy. In contrast, product formation was governed by the thermo‐induced chemistry. These results are useful for a better understanding of plasma‐induced CO2 hydrogenation.
