Abstract:We present a 10-GHz granularity reconfigurable WDM superchannel filter in a photonic integrated circuit. The filter uses a ring-resonator-assisted tapped-delay-line topology. An example configuration with two ring resonators and four tapped delay lines provides a spectral filter with a flat-top passband, a roll-off factor of 8%, a tunable central wavelength, and a selectable free spectral range, i.e., 2x or 4x the 3-dB passband bandwidth. The device was fabricated in a silicon nitride (Si3N4/SiO2) waveguide with a chip area of 0.36 cm(2) and has a fiber-to-fiber insertion loss of 5 dB. We experimentally demonstrate the filter for selecting a subchannel from a WDM superchannel comprising 10-GHz sub-channels with 10% and zero guard bands. Owing to the infinite impulse responses of ring resonators, this filter requires a significantly smaller area and fewer tuning elements compared with designs based on only tapped-delay-line finite-impulse-response filters. This paper contributes to the creation of chip-scale all-optical WDM superchannel transceivers and reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs).

Abstract:This article proposes a three-dimensional heterogenous-integrated (3DHI) switchable bandpass filter bank with two independent wideband filter channels that cover 26-40 GHz and 32.5-40 GHz, respectively. An accurate wafer-level process with a high hollowed ratio of the applied 8-inch high-resistivity-silicon (HR-Si) interposer wafers is presented to form both compact filter channels. Above the interdigital filter patterns fabricated on the bottom interposer wafer, deep cavities are etched in the cap interposer wafer to improve the quality factor of the filter bank. Besides the cavities, the cap interposer wafer is 35% hollow inside, which two bare dies of GaAs single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switches and two thin film resistors are attached to the bottom interposer after the wafer-to-wafer (W2W) bonding. To ensure good out-of-band performance, a 3D EM co-simulation of the switch layout at the chip level and filter patterns at the package level is applied. Measurement results show that the switchable filter bank achieves a high isolation of 50 dB and a competitive shape factor (BW30dB/BW3dB) of about 1.3. In addition, the size of the switchable filter bank is only 7.0 mm x 3.5 mm x 0.6 mm, and the weight is only 0.1 g.

Abstract:An ldquoextended doubletrdquo bandpass filter (BPF) is proposed using a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity with a complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) etched on its top metal plane. Thus, a single-layer BPF with two transmission zeros is realized successfully, with no additional area or layers occupied. The measured and simulated S-parameters of the filter are presented to show its predicted performance, with good agreements obtained between them.

Abstract:A lossy filter with flat passband and asymmetric response is proposed by using complex couplings. The complex coupling coefficients with positive and negative imaginary parts are realized with transmission lines loaded with series and shunt resistors, respectively. Design formulas are derived for the critical parameters. A filter prototype is developed at 4.97 GHz and substrate integrated waveguide resonators with unloaded Q-factor of 450 are used. One transmission zero is located in its upper stopband. The 0.2-dB bandwidth of 279 MHz is achieved and the equivalent Q-factor is about 1900. Good agreement is obtained among the synthesized, simulated, and measured results.
Broadband Filter Based on Stub-Loaded Ridge Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) in Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic (LTCC)

Abstract:A new broadband bandpass filter is proposed using stub-loaded ridge substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). The ridge SIWs loaded with and without stubs play the roles of resonators and inductive coupling structures, respectively. Since the cutoff frequency of ridge SIW is designed within the passband, both its propagating and evanescent modes are utilized to provide a strong coupling over the whole passband. The proposed filter has a multilayer configuration and can be fabricated with a standard low temperature cofired ceramic (LTCC) technology. In order to validate our design, a LTCC filter prototype is developed with a central frequency of 19 GHz and a fractional bandwidth of 40%. It has a compact volume of 6.89×2.85×0.79 mm3 and a low measured in-band insertion loss of 1.2 dB. The good performance of our proposed SIW filter has been demonstrated by the reasonable agreement obtained between the simulated and measured S-parameters. Its potential application for system in package is expected.

Abstract:An ultra-compact silicon bandpass filter with wide bandwidth tunability is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter architecture is based on a multiple micro-ring resonator-cascaded structure. A wide bandwidth tunability (from 75 to 300 GHz) can be achieved by controlling the resonant frequency of the microring resonators when a good shape factor (0.24-0.44) is held. The filter has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz). The center wavelength can be tuned over several nanometers linearly. The footprint is only 0.053 mm(2). (C) 2016 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A new hybrid-integrated dual-band filter is proposed for WLAN application, where the lower passband is implemented by a pair of stepped-impedance resonators (SIRs) and the higher passband is provided by two substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavities. In our design, the SIRs are embedded into the SIWs to reduce the size. The relationship between the parasitic resonances of SIW structure and the locations of its transmission zeros is studied. Its good performances have been demonstrated by the simulated and measured S-parameters.

Abstract:This paper presents novel bandpass filters by using a triple-mode dielectric resonator (DR) implemented in a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). The resonant frequency and unloaded Q-factor of the DR were first calculated and simulated by Ansoft HFSS. The dimensions of the DR were then determined. A single triple-mode SIW loaded with a DR filter with tuning elements was designed, simulated, and measured. Spurious suppression with source and load couplings, as well as fabrication tolerance, was analyzed. A six-mode filter that uses two DRs was also proposed and measured. These filters exhibit close agreements between the simulation and measurement results and have the advantages of low insertion loss, compact configuration, and easy integration with other planar circuits. The proposed concept is very attractive for designing low cost, low insertion loss, and miniaturized filters for wireless communication systems.

Abstract:Based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder lattice filter, an eight-channel silicon photonic (de-)multiplexer with flat passband is demonstrated in the O-band. The insertion loss of the device is -0.55~-2.48dB and the channel crosstalk is below -7dB. The FSR and channel spacing are about 36nm and 4.4nm respectively.

Abstract:Athermal and flat-topped transmissions are the two main requirements for a silicon WDM filter. A Mach-Zehnder (MZ) filter which simultaneously satisfies these two requirements has been experimentally demonstrated in this paper. A combination of strip waveguide and hybrid strip-slot waveguide is introduced for athermalization, and two-stage interference is utilized for flat-topped transmission. The temperature dependent wavelength shift is measured to be similar to-5 pm/K while the best 1 dB bandwidth is 5.5 nm with 14.7 nm free spectral range (FSR). The measured minimum insertion loss is only 0.4 dB with a device dimension of 170 mu m x 580 mu m. Moreover, Such a MZ filter is compatible with the state-of-art CMOS-fabrication process and its minimum feature size is as large as 200 nm. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A design method for compact substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filters (BPF) with controllable finite transmission zeros (FTZs) is proposed in this work, which is realised by a dual-layer SIW structure with two single-mode SIW cavities in the upper substrate and one dual-mode SIW cavity in the lower substrate. A basic dual-layer SIW BPF in box-section coupling scheme is proposed and analysed. Two FTZs can be produced for the bypass couplings between the diagonal cross-coupling paths. To enhance the cross-coupling strength, a magnetic coupling window between the two single-mode SIW cavities is designed. To further improve the selectivity of passband, a frequency-dependent coupling is designed between the two single-mode SIW cavities to produce an additional FTZ. Characteristics of the proposed dual-layer SIW filters with controllable FTZs are analysed. For the demonstration, some design examples with the centre frequency of 7.5 GHz and bandwidth of 240 MHz are presented, and two design examples are fabricated to verify the performance of the proposed design method for compact dual-layer SIW filters with controllable FTZs.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scalable bandwidth-tunable bandpass filter on silicon. Its spectrum is combined by that of four channels and each channel is formed by two cascaded micro-ring resonators (MRRs). By tuning the center wavelength spacing of the eight MRRs and the phase shifts of four channels, a wide bandwidth tuning range from 37.5 GHz to 227.5 GHz can be achieved with a shape factor between 0.2 and 0.73 and an in-band ripple less than 1 dB. By comparing with the performance of three-channel and two-channel structures, we can draw the conclusion that inducing more channels can effectively improve the bandwidth tunability. The filter also has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz) and small footprint (0.12 mm(2)).

Abstract:A novel and simple bandwidth and wavelength-tunable optical bandpass filter based on silicon microrings in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure is proposed and demonstrated. Abstract:Based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) lattice filters, we demonstrate and compare silicon O-band 8-channel (de-)multiplexers with flat and Gaussian-like passbands for the 400 GBASE-LR8 norm. The 1×8 (de-)multiplexer with flat passbands exhibit insertion loss less than 2.5 dB, channel crosstalk lower than −11 dB, and 3 dB bandwidths of ∼3.9 nm. In contrast, the maximum insertion loss, the worst channel crosstalk, and 3 dB bandwidths of the 1×8 (de-)multiplexer with Gaussian-like passbands are 1.1 dB, −13 dB, and ∼2.9 nm, respectively. The comparison result indicates that the latter is more advisable choice. A theoretical calculation based on measured coupling ratios of stand-along directional couplers (DC) indicates that the performance deteriorations of practical filtering curves are mainly caused by dispersions and fabrication errors of the DCs.

Abstract:We demonstrate a silicon-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)-embedded microring array consisting of four wavelength channels. The embedded MZI in each microring resonator (MRR) works as an ON/OFF key of the resonance, and can offer larger operating wavelength range. The footprint of the core elements is only $180.6\,\,\mu \text{m}\,\,\times 476.1\,\,\mu \text{m}$ . The transmission performances of four wavelength channels keep with good consistency within a 35.2-nm-wide wavelength range. The insertion loss of each channel is less than 3.05 dB. Its rising response time of the ON/OFF status transition is about $4.8~\mu \text{s}$ . Moreover, since the array does not require the free spectral range (FSR)-alignment and the on-chip thermal crosstalk is slight, the hitless wavelength selection can be realized simply without any electronic control assistance. Our experiment results indicate that such compact, and scalable array with the function of easily-implemented hitless wavelength selection may provide another solution for large-scale wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network.

Abstract:As a promising spectral window for optical communication and sensing, it is of great significance to realize on-chip devices at the 2 μm waveband. The development of the 2 μm silicon photonic platform mainly depends on the performance of passive devices. In this work, the passive devices were fabricated in the silicon photonic multi-project wafer process.The designed micro-ring resonator with a 0.6 μm wide silicon ridge waveguide based on a 220 nm silicon-on-insulator platform achieves a high intrinsic quality factor of 3.0 × 105. The propagation loss is calculated as 1.62 d B/cm. In addition,the waveguide crossing, multimode interferometer, and Mach–Zehnder interferometer were demonstrated at 2 μm with good performances.

Abstract:A silicon-on-insulator (SOI) narrow-passband filter based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) is theoretically simulated and experimentally demonstrated, indicating that the free spectral range (FSR) of the proposed filter can be significantly enlarged by increasing the number of the MZI stages. A filter using three-stage cascaded MZIs structure is successfully realized in the experiment and a 3-dB bandwidth of about 1.536 GHz and FSR about 13.5 GHz have been achieved. The performance of a downconverting analog photonic link (APL) employing the designed filter for microwave signal processing is also measured and a spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) as high as 104.1dB-Hz(2/3) is observed.

Abstract:We demonstrate a robust, compact and low-loss four-channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) filter based on cascaded double-ring resonators (2RR) in silicon. The flat-top channel response obtained by the second-order filter design is exploited to compensate for the detrimental effects of local fabrication variations and their associated phase errors on the ring-based filter response. Full wafer-scale characterization of a cascaded, four-channel 2RR filter with channel spacing of 300 GHz shows an average worst-case insertion loss below 1.5 dB and an average worst-case crosstalk below -18 dB across the wafer, representing a substantial improvement over a first-order based ring (1RR) design. The robust 2RR filter design enables the use of a simple collective thermal tuning mechanism to compensate for global fabrication variations as well as for global temperature fluctuations of the WDM filter, the WDM laser source, or both. Highly uniform collective heating is demonstrated using integrated doped silicon heaters. The compact filter footprint of less than 50×50 μm2 per channel enables straightforward scaling of the WDM channel count to 8 channels and beyond. Such low-loss collectively tuned ring-based WDM filters can prove beneficial in scaling the bandwidth density of chip-level silicon optical interconnects.

Abstract:A narrow-hand silicon photonic add-drop filter is demonstrated by using phase-modulated grating-assisted contra-directional couplers (contra-DCs) on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The apodization coupling is achieved by modulating the phase of one grating in a contra-DC, while keeping the other grating uniform. As the local effective index of the gratings remains almost unchanged, the designed apodized contra-DC has a large designing flexibility and a high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR). To obtain a narrow bandwidth, weak coupling is designed. Single-stage and dual-stage filtering are both studied. The experimental results show that single-stage filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.9 nm and an SLSR of 18 dB. Dual-stage filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.5 nm and an SLSR of 23 dB. Our devices are promising for on-chip applications that require narrow bandwidths such as wavelength-division-multiplexed channel filters.
