Abstract:Dynamic material properties are essential to numerical simulations of structural responses to high rates of loading. It poses a challenge in experiment design to determine the dynamic behavior of soft materials such as rubbers. Numerical simulations using LS-DYNA show that a compressive specimen of a cylindrical geometry commonly used in metal testing on a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) behaves as a shock absorber. Homogeneous deformation cannot be achieved over the entire loading process, which leads to an invalid test. Experimental observations using a high-speed digital camera verify the numerical simulations. Therefore, modifications must be made on the conventional SHPB before valid experimental results can be obtained on soft materials.
