Abstract:The "end of history" is a subjective proposition about actual social history made in light of the intrinsic and cultural logic of capital. It urgently needs to draw on Marx's theory of human emancipation for inspiration to transcend the historical limitations of capitalism. Through study of civil society, Marx came to the logical conclusion that this society will necessarily be overcome. The process of overcoming civil society is at the same time one of transcending political emancipation and advancing towards human emancipation. Political emancipation and human emancipation as the "two leaps forward" in social development make overall history in the sense of types logically divide into three stages, namely pre-capitalism, capitalism and communism, that are inherently connected with Marx's theory of "three major forms" in social development, i.e. societies respectively featuring personal dependence, objective dependence, and all-round development of individuals. The fact that this theory is concerned with the circumstances of man's development and the degree of his emancipation determines that the theory of human emancipation also sheds light on the field of social forms, and that human emancipation and the evolution of social form are really two aspects of a single process. With the historical orientation of the self-improvement of socialism, the Chinese people are seeking, in their theoretical and practical explorations, an approach to realizing human emancipation, one that will offer experience with fresh significance for world history in the huge transition in the form of human society.

Abstract:The civil society separated from political state was born in modern bourgeois revolution,but its political functions did not disappear after the revolution as some scholars ever asserted. Hegel and Marx have pointed out the limitations of civil society and clarified its economic functions. With the development of history,some scholars,such as Gramsci,Habermas and Dahrendorf,not only put great emphasis on political and cultural significance of civil society,but also increasingly clarified its internal structure divisions,and thus established the category of "Gongmin Shehui". Nowadays,civil society contains multiple implications of "Shimin Shehui","Gongmin Shehui" and "Wenmin Shehui" ,and so on. The meaning of "Gongmin Shehui" is typical prominent. The theory of civil society develops with realities,and its vitality and explanatory power is also growing.

Abstract:Modern social movements are essentially one kind of collective action,taken part by people who are meant to benefit their own good or impact on some specific social changes,by influencing the growing state power.Therefore,the state perspective offers a fine path to a better understanding of social movement theory in an overall view. In this perspective it gives sense to get the theory through by generally literature reviewing the social movement study. Abstract:In this paper I discuss the morphological evolution of the European states. In Europe, processes of evolution toward modern states began in the late middle ages and continued throughout the modern times. Different nations may have had different experiences in their processes but they all took the same direction and went through similar stages of evolution, which displayed a distinct characteristic of order. Thus we see the four steps in the evolution: feudalism, absolute monarchy, aristocratic dominance, and the “popular” formula. To me the orderly proceeding is a phenomenon of high importance claiming for serious studies. By looking back to the history of European countries I try to explain the phenomenon and discuss the mechanism in it.

Abstract:Etymologically , the term "state form" can be traced up to a number of ancient Chinese classics.However , as a legal-political concept , it witnessed several "rounds of transnational overlaps and transplants" from the pre-modern Germany to the Meiji Japan , and then from Japan to the late-Qing China.As an important conceptual apparatus , it exercised three functions during this period : building the state form , justifying a specific political authority and formulating state corporatism.As such , it promoted the evolution of its connotation at different stages in different countries , and eventually became a substantial concept from a formal one.The state-form article in the existing Chinese Constitution implies the specific content of state corporatism , and its normative connotation itself also entails the inherent mechanism of ongoing formation and self-evolution , which suggests the inherent drive for Chinese legal development and predicts the due direction of its future development.
Towards a Theory of Societal Co-Evolution: Individualism versus Collectivism

Abstract:Substantial empirical research has shown that the level of individualism vs. collectivism is one of the most critical and important determinants of societal traits, such as economic growth, economic institutions and health conditions. But the exact nature of this impact has thus far not been well understood in an analytical setting. In this work, we develop one of the first theoretical models that analytically studies the impact of individualism-collectivism on the society. We model the growth of an individual's welfare (wealth, resources and health) as depending not only on himself, but also on the level of collectivism, i.e. the level of dependence on the rest of the individuals in the society, which leads to a co-evolutionary setting. Based on our model, we are able to predict the impact of individualism-collectivism on various societal metrics, such as average welfare, average life-time, total population, cumulative welfare and average inequality. We analytically show that individualism has a positive impact on average welfare and cumulative welfare, but comes with the drawbacks of lower average life-time, lower total population and higher average inequality.

Abstract:We present three major transitions that occur on the way to the elaborate and diverse societies of the modern era. Our account links the worlds of social animals such as pigtail macaques and monk parakeets to examples from human history, including 18th Century London and the contemporary online phenomenon of Wikipedia. From the first awareness and use of group-level social facts to the emergence of norms and their self-assembly into normative bundles, each transition represents a new relationship between the individual and the group. At the center of this relationship is the use of coarse-grained information gained via lossy compression. The role of top-down causation in the origin of society parallels that conjectured to occur in the origin and evolution of life itself.

Abstract:This article aims to illuminate how social constructivism has evolved as a mainstream international relation (IR) paradigm within a short period of time. To be specific, I navigated core tenets of constructivism in terms of its ontology, epistemology, and methodology, respectively. I also explored the growing body of constructivist empirical research and ensuing theoretical refinement as well as the strengths and weaknesses of a constructivist approach. Through these discussions, this article argues that constructivist approaches, since its emergence, have hugely contributed to the development of the study of IRs, providing novel insights and distinct ways of understanding of social and international reality with its own added value, by focusing on the role of ideas, identity, and norms in shaping state preferences and world politics.

Abstract:This article argues that since the Meiji Restoration, the degree of Japan's misplacement has changed, depending on its structural power and ability to shape the concept of 'Asia' as a region. More specifically, there are three historical turning points: first, from the Meiji Restoration to the Pacific War (hard misplacement); second, post-World War II to the end of the Cold War (soft misplacement); and third, post-Cold War to the present (relative well-placement). In each period, Japan was faced with a different concept of 'Asia' and attempted to modify its identity and roles accordingly. The degree of 'misplacement' is thus not static, but elastic, and such a status is not a permanent attribute of the state. Changes occur when states undertake a role location process, particularly during or after a change in the regional environment.

Thirty Years of Political Transition and Changes of Party System in Japan

Abstract:The time from 1970s to the beginning of this century marked a 30-year period of major restructuring in Japan's political,economic,and social structure. From the macro perspective of the political development process,there were three major changes in this transformation:a change in the guiding ideology from "economic centralism" to "political centralism;" a change of national development model from being "led by the state" to being "led by the market;" a change of its national development strategy from one of an "economic power" to a "political power." From the micro perspective of the political development process,it has experienced a change from the 1955-System and the 1986-System to the 1996-System; and the party structure experienced a shift from an opposition between the conservative and the reformist,towards the conservative model. During these changes,political ideologies and political parties moved towards convergence. At the present,Japan's new model of national development has yet to be set definitely; it is still in the process of transforming into a post-modern society.
The three constituencies of the state: why the state has lost unifying energy

Abstract:We address resurgent populism by examining structural processes of state transformation in the UK, the US and France. Scholars stress the 'unifying energy of the state', a set of institutions and policies capable of limiting inequalities and defending legal regimes. One characteristic of modern Western statehood were packages of policies designed to integrate social groups and territories in part by ensuring common standards of provision and social citizenship across the nation state. This echoes James Scott's critical analysis of the modernist project of the state (1998). This 'unifying energy' had different origins including nationalist movements, combatting external influence or powers, war, and preparing citizens for the rigours of industrialization. Overcoming class differences and territorial differences (including cultural, social and economic differences) was a major source of mobilization to feed this 'unifying energy of the state' in France, Italy or Spain for instance. Political and cultural identities are related in significant part to respective nation states. We argue that this 'unifying energy' was an essential component of statehood in Europe and in the US. It is now largely lost. We explain why and the significance of its displacement.

Abstract:Researchers have proposed that the distinction between so-called "simple" and "complex" societies can be expressed by an increase in the number of levels at which functional organization, interaction, and thus selection, operate. In spite of the obvious links between this suggestion and research into complex social organization amongst insects and other social animals, the levels of selection model has seen little use among anthropologists. We suggest that the primary reason for lack of research into the evolutionary causes of social complexity has been the lack of descriptive units with which we can examine phenotypic variation and heritability of social organization above the level of the organism. The goal of our paper, therefore, is to begin constructing descriptive units which map to meaningful models of multi-level selection. In order to demonstrate how these units are useful in a real dataset, we examine the functional changes involved in the United States economy over the last 100 years, a period of time characterized, we believe, by significant changes in the number and kinds of social aggregates functioning as "individuals" with respect to selection. Our preliminary analysis suggests that it is possible to measure changes in the scale at which functional integration occurs through published data, and that the multilevel selection model for complex society may possess considerable power for describing how selection of culturally transmitted variation occurs in complex societies.

Abstract:I advance an endogenous explanation for the systemic transformation of international politics and offer to neatly resolve the debate between offensive realism and defensive realism through a social evolutionary approach. I contend that international politics has always been an evolutionary system and it has evolved from an offensive realism world to a defensive realism world. Consequently, offensive realism and defensive realism are appropriate grand theories of international politics for two different historical epochs. Different grand theories of international politics are for different epochs of international politics, and different epochs of international politics actually need different theories of international politics. Because international politics has always been an evolutionary system, non-evolutionary approaches will be intrinsically incapable of shedding light on the evolution of the system. The science of international politics must be a genuine evolutionary science and students of international politics must ‘give Darwin his due’.

Abstract:Historians have long aspired to see beyond the rise and fall of dynasties to the longue durée and the major changes over time in Chinese society. The five empirically rich and theoretically sophisticated books discussed in this essay all share this goal. While they make distinct contributions, they have in common close attention to the relationships between the state, the elite, and local institutions between the late Tang and Qing periods. Reading them together encourages rethinking the state-and-society issues that historians have been debating for a generation. In this essay, after a brief summary of each book's major contributions, I suggest ways they help us conceptualize the long-term processes of continuity and change from the late Tang to the Qing.

Abstract:Implicit in most recent social science explanations of human behavior is a conception of man as universal homo economicus . Although such a conception is capable of giving a powerful account of a great deal of human action, its account of the nature and variety of human values is inadequate. Cultural assumptions about the meaning of “self” and “others,” and about relations between human beings, are likely to vary from one society to another. These assumptions affect the collective decision processes of political elites under conditions of complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity. The author first addresses the question of how to construct a compelling cultural explanation, and then offers evidence which suggests that, because Chinese, Japanese, and Russians tend to hold somewhat different conceptions of “self” and “others” than do Americans (the former tending to be more collectivist than the latter), these different conceptions have implications for collective decision making.

Abstract:What is the modern state?What are the differences between the modern state and the ancient state in terms of national governance ?Drawing insights from recent research of modernization theory,statism,and historical re-search,this paper illustrates fundamental principles and characteristics for governance of the modern state.It argues that there are two dimensions regarding the modern state.The first dimension refers to unification of ter-ritory and sovereign from international politics viewpoint.The second dimension refers to the construction of a rule of law and democratic accountable state from development politics viewpoint.The effective restriction of governors (rulers)of the state is the key indicator for the modern state from perspective of development poli-tics.The major measure for governing the modern state is limited accountability based on the separation of sov-ereign and administrative power,namely the accountable government ruling of law.
