Abstract:The stresses in constituent fiber and matrix of a composite determined by a micromechanics theory are homogenized quantities. They must be converted into true values in order that an effective property of the composite can be estimated from the original constituent information. Whereas the true and homogenized stresses of the fiber are the same, those of the matrix are different. A true stress of the matrix is obtained by multiplying its homogenized counterpart by a stress concentration factor (SCF) of the matrix due to introduction of the fiber. Such an SCF cannot be defined following a classical approach. It must be determined on an averaged quantity. All of the SCFs of the matrix assuming perfect interface bonding with the fiber have been presented. Application of them to prediction of composite strengths has been shown. Averaged errors between usages of the homogenized and true stresses are more than 5 times in difference.
