Abstract:Though the technology of grating side-coupling is often applied in fields, such as coupling of light of single wavelength or narrow waveband, pump of fiber laser, integration of optical waveguide, its application for broadband coupling of visible spectrum is rarely studied. Sunlight can concentrate and output at the edge of waveguides by integrating sub-wavelength gratings with waveguides, making it a novel solar concentrator. In this paper, we simulated different grating structures with the finite-difference time-domain solution software (FDTD) to obtain the optimal structure design, since different grating structures feature different diffractive efficiencies. The result demonstrates that the structures mentioned above all feature good diffractive efficiencies in broadband wavelength, among which the blazing grating reaches the largest efficiency, namely 48.8%. This kind of sub-wavelength gratings feature integration of small size, which makes it promising in absorption of solar energy, such as lumination, photovoltaic cell, space melting, etc.

Abstract:The high-efficiency binary blazed grating couplers with perfectly vertical and nearly vertical coupling are proposed. The efficiencies of them are much higher than those of other types of grating couplers without bottom mirrors under vertical and oblique incidence respectively. For perfectly vertical coupler with transverse-electric polarized incident light, the coupling efficiency, which is defined as the ratio between the power coupled to the fundamental mode of the chip waveguide and that carried by the fundamental mode of the input optical fiber, is 75%, while the nearly vertical coupler with the incident angle of 10.2° has a coupling efficiency of 84%. Rigorous coupled-wave diffraction analysis and a complete optimization method have been used to make the optimal design valid and unique.

Abstract:A novel highly efficient grating coupler with large filling factor and deep etching is proposed in silicon-on-insulator for near vertical coupling between the rib waveguide and optical fibre. The deep slots acting as high efficient scattering centres are analysed and optimized. As high as 60% coupling efficiency at telecom wavelength of 1550-nm and 3-dB bandwidth of 61 nm are predicted by simulation. A peak coupling efficiency of 42.1% at wavelength 1546-nm and 3-dB bandwidth of 37.6 nm are obtained experimentally.

Abstract:We proposed a new type of vertical grating couplers (VGCs) with a compact footprint on the 220-nm silicon-on-insulator platform. The overall size of the device containing the L-shaped coupling grating and the taper with achromatic in-plane metalens is only 45 × 15 µm2, and the measured coupling efficiency at 1550 nm is -5.2 dB with a 1 dB bandwidth of 38 nm, around 1.6 dB higher than the VGC without metalens. The incidence angle mismatch has a 1 dB bandwidth of roughly 4°, whereas the displacement mismatch along the x-/y- axis has a bandwidth of around 3/4 µm. Furthermore, we experimentally show that such a design is compatible with VGCs operating in the S, C, and L bands.

Abstract:A high efficiency grating coupler between single-mode fiber and silicon-on-insulator waveguide is designed by a formula method. Over 78.5% coupling efficiency (>−1.05 dB) with 3 dB bandwidth about 50 nm for one grating coupler is obtained experimentally and this result is the highest one as far as we know. This grating coupler is CMOS compatible which needs only one etch-step and is designed for a standard SOI chip without any Bragg reflector or bottom reflector.

Abstract:A grating coupler for interfacing between a silicon-on-insulator waveguide and a single-mode fiber located at a perfectly vertical direction is demonstrated based on a tilted membrane structure. The proposed design is compatible with that of conventional grating couplers for oblique fibers and facilitates mass production. A peak coupling efficiency of 28.5% and 1 dB bandwidth of 38 nm are obtained experimentally for transverse-electrics polarized light. Back reflection in the SOI waveguide is also estimated to be 1.4%. The present grating coupler for perfectly vertical fiber exhibits similar performances to the conventional grating coupler for oblique fiber concerning coupling efficiency, bandwidth, and back reflections. Abstract:A unidirectional dual-wavelength-band grating coupler with one-dimensional (1D) subwavelength structures is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Inverse optimization method is used for the design and the grating coupler fabricated on the silicon-on-insulator chip can achieve efficient fiber-chip coupling simultaneously in the O-band and the L-band. The peak coupling efficiencies in the two bands are measured to be 19.7% and 19.5% with 3-dB bandwidths of 27 and 38-nm, respectively.

Abstract:We present how a conventional Si waveguide grating coupler can be integrated with a polymerizable liquid crystal polarization grating to provide vertical coupling between optical fibers and planar waveguides. The implementation involves the deposition of a liquid crystal polymer film onto the surface of the planarized photonic chip. To achieve optimal performance, both the period and thickness of the thin film grating are optimized through a two-dimensional finite element simulation. The simulation results indicate that the output beam can be entirely redirected towards the vertical direction. We demonstrate a fabricated device and experimental validation of the proposed device in a laboratory setting. Through the verification, we affirm the feasibility of the proposed concept.

Abstract:A compact, high-efficiency grating coupler is demonstrated for interfacing a silicon waveguide and a perfectly-vertical fiber at O-band. The grating lies on a tilted silicon membrane for minimizing the reflections. Circular grating lines are adopted to shorten the overall device length to about 60μm. 57% peak coupling efficiency and >28nm 1-dB coupling bandwidth are obtained experimentally. Back reflections of 1% to the silicon waveguide and the single mode fiber are theoretically estimated. The processing flow to realize the proposed structure is discussed in detail. The fabrication control over the tilted angle of the silicon membrane is investigated. The approach by applying an oxide cladding to improve the stability of the membrane is also introduced. The present grating coupler is compatible to common fabrication processes for silicon photonic chips.

Abstract:The eigenmode expansion method is applied to discretize the stepped shine grating into a binary shine grating. Various strategies that increase the directionality of the coupling efficiency have been optimized and replicated using this binary shining grating. We discussed and analyzed the impact of distributed Bragg reflectors, slits, and metal reflectors on the coupling efficiency of grating couplers. A metal reflector and slit were included in the design of a binary shine grating coupler. The coupling efficiency from the fiber to the waveguide of vertically incident electrically polarized light is 75.07% at 1600 nm. A 3 dB bandwidth of 77 nm from 1554 to 1631 nm is obtained.

Abstract:We demonstrate polarization-insensitive grating couplers on thin-film lithium niobate waveguides. Inverse optimization method is used and the fabricated couplers exhibit efficiencies of - 6 dB for the TE mode and - 6.5 dB for the TM mode.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high-efficiency grating coupler by combining an interleaved etch and apodized structure for fiber-to-chip coupling. The grating coupler was optimized using the fast directional optimization method to achieve apodization. The grating coupler utilized a layout strategy involving an extended mask to avoid alignment errors for a multi-etch structure. The coupling efficiency was measured to be -2.2 dB at a wavelength of 1549 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 47 nm. The grating coupler, having no gold reflector, subwavelength index matching structure, or additional material layers, was fabricated using a commercial silicon photonics process with a minimum feature size of 140 nm. This grating coupler design provides a robust and effective coupling scheme and the proposed method can be employed to adopt the design in accordance with standard foundry design rules.

Abstract:We demonstrate hybrid amorphous silicon uniform grating couplers for efficient coupling between the standard single-mode fiber and sub-micron lithium niobate waveguides. The grating couplers exhibit coupling efficiency of -3.06 dB and 1-dB bandwidth of 55 nm. The amorphous silicon grating couplers can also provide a universal building block applicable to other photonic platforms such as silicon nitride waveguides, whose moderate refractive index values prevent high efficiency grating couplers to be fabricated in the native waveguide. Abstract:A high-performance and compact fiber-to-waveguide binary blazed subwavelength grating coupler was designed based on silicon-on-insulator. By the appropriate choice of waveguide/grating parameters, including thicknesses, periods, height, and fill factor, to optimize the mode matching, a relatively high coupling efficiency was obtained for the fiber and waveguide interface. Moreover, perfectly vertical fiber coupling is achieved by using an asymmetric subgrating structure in which a period consists of two subgratings with identical etching height and different widths. Coupling efficiency as high as 69% at a wavelength of 1.52 μm and 65% at a wavelength of 1.55 μm is calculated. Simultaneously, the 1 dB wavelength bandwidth is around 80 nm. The coupling efficiency can reach up to 80% or so if Bragg reflector layers are added. Finally, the device layout is simple, feasible, one-step etched, and compatible with standard complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology processing.

Abstract:A novel high-efficiency silicon-chip-to-fiber grating coupler is investigated here. By introducing a dual layer grating structure with an inter-layer lateral shift to mimic 45° tilted mirror behavior, perfectly vertical coupling is successfully demonstrated. Our numerical results show that a peak silicon-chip-to-fiber coupling efficiency about 70% is possible near 1550 nm. Meanwhile, for the entire telecom C-band, i.e. wavelengths from 1530 nm to 1565 nm, the coupling efficiency is > 50% and the back reflection is less than < 1%. Our proposed high-performance silicon perfectly vertical coupling structure is suitable for interfacing with multi-core fiber platform, which may play an important role in the future CMOS photonic integration technology.
Novel tapered optical fiber coupler

Abstract:A novel tapered optical fiber coupler was proposed with its waveguide refractive index gradually changing, induced by germanium defects under the UV irradiation. The refractive index change of 6*10-3 in the single-mode communication fiber was achieved in the experiment by means of pre-treating the fiber in high pressure and low temperature environment. A particular index taper profile function was obtained by delicately controlling the exposure conditions, and the mode field radius (MFR) was reduced from 4.8 to 3.2 micrometer in single mode fibers. The coupled wave theory analysis shows that the tapered coupler is capable of excellent transmission for fundamental mode with very small model conversions.
High-efficiency Dual-Layer Grating Coupler for Vertical Fiber-Chip Coupling in Two Polarizations

Abstract:Efficient coupling between optical fibers and high-index-contrast silicon waveguides is essential for the development of integrated nanophotonics. Herein, a high-efficiency dual-layer grating coupler is demonstrated for vertical polarization-diversity fiber-chip coupling. The two waveguide layers are orthogonally distributed and designed for y- and x-polarized LP01 fiber modes, respectively. Each layer consists of two 1D stacked gratings, allowing for both perfectly vertical coupling and high coupling directionality. The gratings are optimized using the particle swarm algorithm with a preset varying trend of parameters to thin out the optimization variables. The interlayer thickness is determined to ensure efficient coupling of both polarizations. The optimized results exhibit record highs of 92% (−0.38dB) and 85% (−0.72dB) 3D finite-difference time-domain simulation efficiencies for y and x polarizations, respectively. The polarization-dependent loss (PDL) is below 2 dB in a 160 nm spectral bandwidth with cross talk between the two polarizations less than −24dB. Fabrication imperfections are also investigated. Dimensional offsets of ±10nm in etching width and ±8 nm in lateral shift are tolerated for a 1 dB loss penalty. The proposed structure offers an ultimate solution for polarization diversity coupling schemes in silicon photonics with high directionality, low PDL, and a possibility to vertically couple.

Abstract:An efficient optical coupler to transfer the signal between an optical fiber and a silicon waveguide is essential for realizing the applications of silicon photonic integrated circuits such as optical communication and optical sensing. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a two-dimensional grating coupler based on a silicon-on-insulator platform to obtain completely vertical and polarization-independent couplings, which potentially ease the difficulty of packaging and measurement of photonic integrated circuits. To mitigate the coupling loss induced by the second-order diffraction, two corner mirrors are respectively placed at the two orthogonal ends of the two-dimensional grating coupler to create appropriate interference conditions. Partial single-etch is assumed to form an asymmetric grating to obtain high directionalities without a bottom mirror. The two-dimensional grating coupler is optimized and verified with finite-difference time-domain simulations, achieving a high coupling efficiency of −1.53 dB and a low polarization-dependent loss of 0.015 dB when coupling to a standard single-mode fiber at approximately 1310 nm wavelength.
