Abstract:In differential geometry, Finsler geometry is more general than Riemannian geometry, which has been developed essentially in recent decades. In this paper, some open problems in global Finsler geometry are summarized briefly. Such problems deal with Finsler submanifolds, the curvature and topology of Finsler manifolds, and Finsler-Einstein metrics.

Abstract:By using the volume form induced from the projective sphere bundle of the Fiusler manifold,the Finsler geometry of submanifolds is studied.The first variation formula of the volume functional for Fiusler submanifolds is derived.The second fundamental form and the mean curvature form for Finsler submanifolds are defined,which coincide with the usual notions for the Riemannian case.By deriving the divergence formula on the fiber of the projective sphere bundle,a simple equivalence expression of the mean curvature form is given.Some interesting results for Finsler submanifolds in the Minkowski space are established.

Abstract:A generalized Einstein-Hilbert functional in Finsler geometry is defined and its Euler-Lagrange equation is derived, which depends on not only the Ricci scalar but also the mean Landsberg curvature. Such critical metrics include usual Riemann-Einstein metrics. Some non-Riemannian examples of critical metrics are given. Moreover, some rigidity theorems for a Finsler metric to be Riemannian are obtained.

Abstract:Finsler manifolds are differentiable manifolds equipped with Riemannian metrics without the quadratic restriction. In this paper, some recent developments and new results on curvatures and fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are summarized briefly. The contents contain the growth of fundamental groups, the entropy of manifolds and fundamental groups, the first Betti number and the finiteness of fundamental groups.

Abstract:The conformai properties of complex Finsler metrics are studied. We first give a characterization of a compact complex Finsler manifold to be globally conformai Kahler. By considering the total holomorphic curvature and total Ricci curvature in the volume preserved conformal classes, we then study the variational properties of Kahler Finsler metrics. By studying the spectral properties of two average metrics, the stabilities of critical Kähler Finsler metrics are verified. Finally, a Yamabe type problem for mean holomorphic Ricci curvature is considered, and a partial existence result is obtained.

Abstract:Conformal vector fields play an important role in the study of Finsler geometry, especially in the conformal navigation problem.In this paper, by establishing and solving the corresponding partial differential equations, we determine all spherically symmetric Finsler metrics with generalized radial fields as conformal vector fields completely.These Finsler metrics include Riemannian metrics of constant sectional curvature.

Abstract:In this paper, we study symmetric Finsler spaces. We first study some geometric properties of globally symmetric Finsler spaces and prove that any such space can be written as a coset space of a Lie group with an invariant Finsler metric. Then we prove that a globally symmetric Finsler space is a Berwald space. As an application, we use the notion of Minkowski symmetric Lie algebras to give an algebraic description of symmetric Finsler spaces and obtain the formulas for flag curvature and Ricci scalar. Finally, some rigidity results of locally symmetric Finsler spaces related to the flag curvature are also given.

Abstract:A Finsler metric F is said to be spherically symmetric if the orthogonal group O(n) acts as isometries of F. In this paper, we show that every spherically symmetric Finsler metric of isotropic Berwald curvature is a Randers metric. We also construct explicitly a lot of new isotropic Berwald spherically symmetric Finsler metrics.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the representation theory of compact Lie groups to prove that the degree of symmetry of a closed manifold can be realized by a non-Riemannian Finsler metric unless the manifold is diffeomorphic to a rank-one Riemannian symmetric space. As a by product, we obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for a coset space of a Lie group to admit invariant non-Riemannian Finsler metrics.

Abstract: In this paper, we classify the spherically symmetric Berwald metrics in $\mathbb{R}^n$. For the spherically symmetric Landsberg metrics, we prove that there do not exist any non-Berwald metrics among the regular case. The partial differential equation systems which can respectively characterize the spherically symmetric Finsler metrics with constant flag curvature and Einstein metrics of this type is also obtained. Utilizing these equations, we find an effective way to construct the non-projective, non-Randers Finsler metrics with constant flag curvature and many explicit examples are given by this method.

Abstract:In this paper, we give the general form of spherically symmetric Finsler metrics in $R^n$ and surprisedly find that many well-known Finsler metrics belong to this class. Then we explicitly express projective metrics of this type. The necessary and sufficient conditions that projective Finsler metrics with spherical symmetry have constant flag curvature are also obtained.

Abstract:Spherically symmetric metrics and Randers metrics form two rich classes of Finsler metrics. In this paper, we find an equation that characterizes pointwise projectively related spherically symmetric metrics. Some applications are given. In particular, by using known spherically symmetric metrics, we produce a lot of Randers metrics of quadratic Weyl curvature which are non-trivial in the sense that they are not of Weyl type.
