In this paper, some recent developments and new results on curvatures and fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are summarized briefly. Abstract:A generalized Einstein-Hilbert functional in Finsler geometry is defined and its Euler-Lagrange equation is derived, which depends on not only the Ricci scalar but also the mean Landsberg curvature. Such critical metrics include usual Riemann-Einstein metrics. Some non-Riemannian examples of critical metrics are given. Moreover, some rigidity theorems for a Finsler metric to be Riemannian are obtained.

Abstract:By using the volume form induced from the projective sphere bundle of the Fiusler manifold,the Finsler geometry of submanifolds is studied.The first variation formula of the volume functional for Fiusler submanifolds is derived.The second fundamental form and the mean curvature form for Finsler submanifolds are defined,which coincide with the usual notions for the Riemannian case.By deriving the divergence formula on the fiber of the projective sphere bundle,a simple equivalence expression of the mean curvature form is given.Some interesting results for Finsler submanifolds in the Minkowski space are established.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds. Some relationships between the growth of fundamental groups and the volume growth of universal covers of Finsler manifolds are found. Some estimates of entropies and the number of generators of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are given. Moreover, the quasi-isometry and the geometric norm in Finsler geometry are considered.

Abstract:In Finsler geometry, the Minkowski space is a generalization of the Euclidean space. We will brief isometric immersions of Finsler manifolds in Minkowski spaces, in particular, minimal immersions. The volume variation and the mean curvature of Finsler submanifolds in a Minkowski space are given. Some Bernstein type theorems and non-trivial examples for minimal surfaces in Minkowski spaces are shown.

Abstract:In this paper the relationship between the Ricci curvature and the fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are studied. We give an estimate of the first Betti number of a compact Finsler manifold. Two finiteness theorems for fundamental groups of compact Finsler manifolds are proved. Moreover, the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds with almost-nonnegative Ricci curvature are considered.

Abstract:An extension of Riemmann's geometry into a direction dependent geometric structure is usually described by Finsler's geometry. Historically, this construction was motivated by the well-known Riemann's quartic length element example. Quite surprisingly, the same quartic expression emerges in solid-state electrodynamics as a basic dispersion relation -- covariant Fresnel equation. Consequently, Riemann's quartic length expression can be interpreted as a mathematical model of a well-established physics phenomena. In this paper, we present various examples of Riemann's quartic that demonstrate that Finsler's geometry is too restrictive even in the case of a positive definite Euclidean signature space. In the case of the spaces endowed with an indefinite (Minkowski) signature, there are much more singular hypersurfaces where the strong axioms of Finsler's geometry are broken down. We propose a weaker definition of Finsler's structure that is required to be satisfied only on open subsets of the tangent bundle. We exhibit the characteristic singular hypersurfaces related to Riemann's quartic and briefly discuss their possible physical interpretation.

Abstract:One of the fundamental problems in Finsler geometry is to study Finsler metrics of constant (or scalar) curvature. In this paper, we refine and improve Chen-Shen-Zhao equations characterizing Finsler warped product metrics of scalar flag curvature. In particular, we find equations that characterize Finsler warped product metrics of constant flag curvature. Then we improve the Chen-Shen-Zhao result on characterizing Einstein Finsler warped product metrics. As its application we construct explicitly many new warped product Douglas metrics of constant Ricci curvature by using known locally projectively flat spherically symmetric metrics of constant flag curvature.

Abstract:Some links between Lorentz and Finsler geometries have been developed in the last years, with applications even to the Riemannian case. Our purpose is to give a brief description of them, which may serve as an introduction to recent references. As a motivating example, we start with Zermelo navigation problem, where its known Finslerian description permits a Lorentzian picture which allows for a full geometric understanding of the original problem. Then, we develop some issues including: (a) the accurate description of the Lorentzian causality using Finsler elements, (b) the non-singular description of some Finsler elements (such as Kropina metrics or complete extensions of Randers ones with constant flag curvature), (c) the natural relation between the Lorentzian causal boundary and the Gromov and Busemann ones in the Finsler setting, and (d) practical applications to the propagation of waves and firefronts.

A metrical approach to Finsler geometry

Abstract:In the standard approach to Finsler geometry the metric is defined as a vertical Hessian and the Chern or Cartan connections appear as just two among many possible natural linear connections on the pullback tangent bundle. Here it is shown that the Hessian nature of the metric, the non-linear connection and the Chern or Cartan connections can be derived from a few compatibility axioms between metric and Finsler connection. This result provides a metrical formulation of Finsler geometry which is well adapted to field theory, and which has proved useful in Einstein-Cartan-like approaches to Finsler gravity.

Abstract:Lorentz invariance is one of the foundations of modern physics; however, Lorentz violation may happen from the perspective of quantum gravity, and plenty of studies on Lorentz violation have arisen in recent years. As a good tool to explore Lorentz violation, Finsler geometry is a natural and fundamental generalization of Riemann geometry. The Finsler structure depends on both coordinates and velocities. Here, we simply introduce the mathematics of Finsler geometry. We review the connection between modified dispersion relations and Finsler geometries and discuss the physical influence from Finsler geometry. We review the connection between Finsler geometries and theories of Lorentz violation, such as the doubly special relativity, the standard-model extension, and the very special relativity.
