Abstract:In the last few years, broadband and switchable frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) absorber/reflector are of great importance in different areas such as stealth system, EM interference, EM compatibility, and so on. In this paper, to obtain a switchable frequency selective surfaces absorber/reflector in different states, a broadband and switchable absorber using an absorb/reflective FSS is presented. The top layer of the proposed switchable absorber is a periodic arrangement of square loops loaded with PIN diodes on a dielectric substrate which has a sufficient mechanical strength to hold up all the units, and under the square loops there are honeycomb of a certain thickness and a thin layer of metal. The structure has been characterized with the full-wave analysis and shows good absorption/reflection switching performance. Intrinsic impedance of proposed structure has also been investigated to explain the switching and the broadband absorption mechanisms of the structure. The working frequency band of the switchable absorbing structure is 2.5 ~ 5.5 GHz, and it switches states by changing the bias voltage. Biasing at different voltages to turn ON and OFF the diodes, the FSS structure can switch freely between absorption and reflection state. In ON state, the switchable FSS has two states working as a wideband absorber and the reflectivity in 2.5 ~ 5.5 GHz is below -10 dB, while in OFF state it has fine reflective property. In addition, inductances are used to connect each element of the structure to achieve the purpose of broadband isolation. Simulation and measurement results demonstrate the performance of the proposed structure.
