Abstract:An over 200 W high-power first-order random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) at 1238 nm is demonstrated. The laser is based on a half-open cavity with a piece of 30 m phosphosilicate fiber. This RRFL is pumped by a conventional 1064 nm Yb-doped fiber laser. After suppressing the silica Raman component, a maximum output power of 206.7 W is obtained with a full width half-maximum linewidth of 7.1 nm at a pump power of 346.3 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 59.7%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest reported output power of RRFL on the basis of phosphosilicate fiber with the shortest cavity length. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Abstract:An up to 8th order cascaded Raman random fiber laser with high spectral purity is achieved with the pumping of a narrow linewidth amplified spontaneous emission source. The spectral purity is over 90% for all the 8 Stokes orders. The highest output power is 6.9 W at 1691.6 nm with an optical conversion efficiency of 21% from 1062.0 nm. As a comparison, with conventional FBG-based fiber oscillator as pump source, only 47% spectral purity is achieved at 8th order. The temporal stability of the pump laser is proved to play a key role, because the time fluctuation of pump laser is transferred directly to Raman outputs and results in power distribution among different Stokes orders.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate the power scalability in a novel random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) with localized random feedback provided by an ultrashort low-reflection random fiber grating (RFG). The RFG is composed of a randomly distributed sub-grating array, and is directly written by a femtosecond laser with point-by-point inscription approach. The fabricated RFG has a total length of only 1.86 mm and thus has relatively broad reflection peaks. A narrow-band high-reflection fiber Bragg grating at the end of the Fabry-Perot cavity can easily implement spectral filtering to ensure that the RRFL only lases at the wavelength of the highest reflection peak of the RFG due to the large wavelength separation between adjacent reflection peaks in RFG. The RRFL has a low threshold of 2.16W and a high slope efficiency of 91.56, and the optical signal-to-noise ratio is 55 dB. Moreover, the spectral broadening of this RRFL is proved to be turbulence-induced square-root broadening.

Abstract:Raman fiber lasers with high spectral purity and simple structure are essential for the high-power fiber lasers beyond the conventional emission band of active dopants. In this paper, we demonstrate a compact random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) oscillator with spectral purity of over 99%. The RRFL is generated in a full-open cavity which is counter-pumped by a random ytterbium-doped fiber laser with half-open cavity. They share the same piece of passive fiber to form the cavity, a fiber Bragg grating separates the signal light and pump light for the output. This configuration promises the compactness and high spectral purity of the RRFL. Leveraging the spatiotemporal gain-modulation, the RRFL can provide both continuous-wave output and stable pulsed output through adjusting the pump power. The output laser of continuous-wave operation and pulsing operation exhibits spectral purity of 99.4% and 99.5% around 1134 nm, respectively. This work offers a simple and robust solution for high-spectral-purity Raman fiber lasers of both continuous-wave operation and pulsed operation of hundred-watt level.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband tunable cascaded Raman random fiber laser pumped by a tunable (1020-1080 nm) ytterbium-doped fiber laser is investigated. By continuously adjusting the pump laser wavelength, the Raman random laser tunes accordingly due to the Raman gain competition. By increasing the pump power, up to the 5th order Raman random laser is achieved. As a result, 300 nm of continuous wavelength tuning from 1070 to 1370 nm is achieved by adjusting the pump wavelength and power altogether. The highest output power is 1.8 W at 1360 nm with an optical efficiency of 15% from 1080 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the widest wavelength tuning range reported for a random fiber laser so far. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Ultrafast Raman fiber lasers are wavelength-agile light sources for various scientific and medical applications. Pulse pumping is an efficient way to generate a high power ultrafast Raman fiber laser, which however requires real-time synchronization between the pump pulses and laser cavity. A pulse pumped Raman fiber laser with random distributed feedback is investigated. Under repetitive pulse pumping, compound cavities based on distributed Rayleigh scattering are formed automatically to synchronize with the pump pulse train. In a proof of principle experiment, self-synchronization is observed and a stable picosecond pulsed random laser is generated at 1120 nm with an average power of 170 mW. Raman gain and random distributed feedback are spatially separated in the present pulse pumped laser configuration. This allows a direct characterization of the random distributed feedback and a comparison between random lasing and amplified spontaneous emission, which is not possible in previous continuous wave pumped random Raman fiber lasers.

Abstract:A random erbium-doped fiber laser based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and single-mode fiber (SMF) was designed and realized experimentally in this study. For the proposed random fiber laser (RFL), the 10 km long SMF was used to generate Rayleigh scattering (RS) emissions, along with FBG to provide randomly distributed feedback in the cavity. In the experiment, the RFL laser threshold is 55 mW, as the pump power is increasingly improved to 175 mW. The RS effect is gradually apparent, and 1531.59nm laser beam was formed. The signal-to-noise ratio was 38.4 dB. The FBG was stretched for sensing applications, and the lasing wavelength was adjusted from 1531.59 to 1533.83 nm when the grating was stretched from 0 to 2000 με.

Abstract:We demonstrate a narrow-linewidth high-order-mode (HOM) Brillouin random fiber laser (BRFL) based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) and distributed Rayleigh random feedback in a half-open linear cavity. The single-mode operation of the laser radiation with sub-kilohertz linewidth is achieved thanks to distributed Brillouin amplification and Rayleigh scattering along kilometer-long single mode fibers whilst a few mode fiber-based LPFGs enable the transverse mode conversion among a broadband wavelength range. Meanwhile, a dynamic fiber grating (DFG) is embedded and incorporated to manipulate and purify the random modes, which hence suppresses the frequency drift resulting from random mode hopping. Consequently, the random laser emission with either high-order scalar or vector modes can be generated with a high laser efficiency of 25.5% and an ultra-narrow 3-dB linewidth of 230 Hz. Furthermore, the dependence of the laser efficiency and frequency stability on the gain fiber length are also experimentally investigated. It is believed that our approach could provide a promising platform for a wide range of applications such as coherent optical communication, high-resolution imaging, highly sensitive sensing, etc.

Abstract:A high-power single-frequency 1178 nm continuous-wave laser is generated in a two-stage stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-suppressed all-polarization-maintaining Raman fiber amplifier pumped by 1120 nm fiber lasers. A polarization-extinction-ratio of 30 dB is achieved due to the all-polarization-maintaining configuration and the polarization dependence gain of Raman scattering. Single-pass frequency doubling with a homemade periodically poled near-stoichiometric LiT alpha O-3 crystal (PPSLT) produces an up to 7 W narrow-linewidth laser at 589 nm. The thermally induced dephasing effect is found to be the key issue for improving second-harmonic efficiency. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A Raman fiber laser with more than 220 W output at 1.24 μm with phosphorus-doped single-mode fiber as gain medium is reported. The laser consists of a 30 m long piece of fiber and a pair of fiber Bragg gratings with different bandwidth, pumped with a high power 1064 nm Yb fiber laser. The optical conversion efficiency is 64% and the slope efficiency is 71.4%. The full width half-maximum linewidth at the maximum output is 5.6 nm. To the best of our knowledge, the reported power is an order magnitude higher than previous reports in phosphosilicate fiber Raman laser.

Abstract:By amplifying the cascaded random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) oscillator and ytterbium fiber laser oscillator, we present the first, to the best of our knowledge, demonstration of a 10-kW-level high-spectral-purity all-fiber ytterbium-Raman fiber amplifier (Yb-RFA). With a carefully designed backward-pumped RRFL oscillator structure, the parasitic oscillation between the cascaded seeds is avoided. Leveraging the RRFL with full-open-cavity as the Raman seed, the Yb-RFA realizes 10.7-kW Raman lasing at 1125 nm, which is beyond the operating wavelengths of all the reflection components used in the system. The spectral purity of the Raman lasing reaches 94.7% and the 3-dB bandwidth is 3.9 nm. This work paves a way to combine the temporal stability of the RRFL seed and the power scaling of Yb-RFA, enabling the wavelength extension of high-power fiber lasers with high spectral purity.

Abstract:Dual-wavelength fiber lasers operating with a wide spectral separation are of considerable importance for many applications. In this study, we propose and experimentally explore an all-fiberized dual-wavelength random fiber laser with bi-directional laser output operating at 1064 and 1550 nm, respectively. A specially designed Er/Yb co-doped fiber, by optimizing the concentrations of the co-doped Er, Yb, Al and P, was developed for simultaneously providing Er ions gain and Yb ions gain for RFL. Two spans of single mode passive fibers are employed to providing random feedback for 1064 and 1550 nm random lasing, respectively. The RFL generates 5.35 W at 1064 nm and 6.61 W at 1550 nm random lasers. Two power amplifiers (PA) enhance the seed laser to 50 W at 1064 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 0.31 nm and 20 W at 1550 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 1.18 nm. Both the short- and long-term time domain stabilities are crucial for practical applications. The output lasers of 1064 and 1550 nm PAs are in the single transverse mode operating with a nearly Gaussian profile. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a dual-wavelength RFL, with a spectral separation as far as about 500 nm in an all-fiber configuration.

Abstract:We present a hundred-watt-level linearly-polarized random fiber laser (RFL) pumped by incoherent broadband amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source and prospect the power scaling potential theoretically. The RFL employs half-opened cavity structure which is composed by a section of 330 m polarization maintained (PM) passive fiber and two PM high reflectivity fiber Bragg gratings. The 2nd order Stokes light centered at 1178 nm reaches the pump limited maximal power of 100.7 W with a full width at half-maximum linewidth of 2.58 nm and polarization extinction ratio of 23.5 dB. The corresponding ultimate quantum efficiency of pump to 2nd order Stokes light is 86.43%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of linearly-polarized high-order RFL with hundred-watt output power. Furthermore, the theoretical investigation indicates that 300 W-level linearly-polarized single-mode 1st order Stokes light can be obtained from incoherently pumped RFL with 100 m PM passive fiber.

Abstract:Diode-pumped multi-mode graded-index (GRIN) fiber Raman lasers provide prominent brightness enhancement both in linear and half-open cavities with random distributed feedback via natural Rayleigh backscattering. Femtosecond laser-inscribed random refractive index structures allow for the sufficient reduction in the Raman threshold by means of Rayleigh backscattering signal enhancement by +50 + 66 dB relative to the intrinsic fiber level. At the same time, they offer an opportunity to generate Stokes beams with a shape close to fundamental transverse mode (LP01), as well as to select higher-order modes such as LP11 with a near-1D longitudinal random structure shifted off the fiber axis. Further development of the inscription technology includes the fabrication of 3D ring-shaped random structures using a spatial light modulator (SLM) in a 100/140 μm GRIN multi-mode fiber. This allows for the generation of a multi-mode diode-pumped GRIN fiber random Raman laser at 976 nm with a ring-shaped output beam at a relatively low pumping threshold (~160 W), demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge.

Towards optimal conversion efficiency of Brillouin random fiber lasers in a half-open linear cavity

Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated an unprecedented high-efficiency Brillouin random fiber laser (BRFL) by fiber length optimization in a half-open linear cavity. In terms of the trade-off between Brillouin gain saturation and weak distributed Rayleigh feedback strength, optimal laser efficiency associated to proper fiber length in a BRFL was theoretically predicted. As a proof-of-concept, a unidirectional-pumped BRFL with a half-open linear cavity was experimentally conducted, in which a fiber Bragg grating at one end of gain fiber served as a high-reflection mirror while Rayleigh scattering enabled distributed feedback for random lasing resonance. Results show that the optimal fiber length of ∼3.4 km in the BRFL offers sufficient Rayleigh scattered random feedback whilst alleviating the Brillouin gain saturation to a large extent. Consequently, an optimal laser efficiency of 77.0% in the BRFL was experimentally demonstrated, which reaches the state-of-the-art high record. Laser characteristics, including the linewidth, statistics and frequency jitter were also systematically investigated. It is believed that such efficient BRFL could provide a promising platform for inspiring new explorations of laser physics as well as potentials in long-haul coherent communication and fiber-optic sensing.

Abstract:Narrowband Raman lasing in a polarization-maintaining two-core fiber (TCF) is demonstrated. Femtosecond point-by-point inscription of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in individual cores produces a half-open cavity with random distributed feedback. The laser linewidth in the cavity with a single FBG inscribed in one core of the TCF reduced by ∼2 times with respect to the cavity with a fiber loop mirror. It is shown that the inscription of two FBGs in different cores leads to the formation of a Michelson-type interferometer, leading to the modulation of generation spectra near threshold. This technique offers new possibilities for spectral filtering or multi-wavelength generation.
