Abstract:Ultrafast Raman fiber lasers are wavelength-agile light sources for various scientific and medical applications. Pulse pumping is an efficient way to generate a high power ultrafast Raman fiber laser, which however requires real-time synchronization between the pump pulses and laser cavity. A pulse pumped Raman fiber laser with random distributed feedback is investigated. Under repetitive pulse pumping, compound cavities based on distributed Rayleigh scattering are formed automatically to synchronize with the pump pulse train. In a proof of principle experiment, self-synchronization is observed and a stable picosecond pulsed random laser is generated at 1120 nm with an average power of 170 mW. Raman gain and random distributed feedback are spatially separated in the present pulse pumped laser configuration. This allows a direct characterization of the random distributed feedback and a comparison between random lasing and amplified spontaneous emission, which is not possible in previous continuous wave pumped random Raman fiber lasers.
More Than 200 W Random Raman Fiber Laser with Ultra-Short Cavity Length Based on Phosphosilicate Fiber

Abstract:An over 200 W high-power first-order random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) at 1238 nm is demonstrated. The laser is based on a half-open cavity with a piece of 30 m phosphosilicate fiber. This RRFL is pumped by a conventional 1064 nm Yb-doped fiber laser. After suppressing the silica Raman component, a maximum output power of 206.7 W is obtained with a full width half-maximum linewidth of 7.1 nm at a pump power of 346.3 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 59.7%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest reported output power of RRFL on the basis of phosphosilicate fiber with the shortest cavity length. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Abstract:An up to 8th order cascaded Raman random fiber laser with high spectral purity is achieved with the pumping of a narrow linewidth amplified spontaneous emission source. The spectral purity is over 90% for all the 8 Stokes orders. The highest output power is 6.9 W at 1691.6 nm with an optical conversion efficiency of 21% from 1062.0 nm. As a comparison, with conventional FBG-based fiber oscillator as pump source, only 47% spectral purity is achieved at 8th order. The temporal stability of the pump laser is proved to play a key role, because the time fluctuation of pump laser is transferred directly to Raman outputs and results in power distribution among different Stokes orders.
Ultra-wide Wavelength Tuning of a Cascaded Raman Random Fiber Laser.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband tunable cascaded Raman random fiber laser pumped by a tunable (1020-1080 nm) ytterbium-doped fiber laser is investigated. By continuously adjusting the pump laser wavelength, the Raman random laser tunes accordingly due to the Raman gain competition. By increasing the pump power, up to the 5th order Raman random laser is achieved. As a result, 300 nm of continuous wavelength tuning from 1070 to 1370 nm is achieved by adjusting the pump wavelength and power altogether. The highest output power is 1.8 W at 1360 nm with an optical efficiency of 15% from 1080 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the widest wavelength tuning range reported for a random fiber laser so far. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Unlike traditional fiber laser with defined resonant cavity, random fiber laser (RFL), whose operation is based on distributed gain and feedback via Rayleigh scattering and stimulated Raman scattering in long passive fiber, has fundamental scientific challenges in pulsing operation for its remarkable cavity-free feature. Here, we propose and experimentally realize the passively spatiotemporal gain modulation induced self-started stable pulsing operation of counter-pumped RFL. Thanks to the good temporal stability of employed pumping amplified spontaneous emission source and the superiority of this pulse generation scheme, stable and regular pulse train can be obtained. Furthermore, the pump hysteresis and bistability phenomena with the generation of high order Stokes light is presented and the dynamics of pulsing operation is discussed. This work extends our comprehension of temporal property of RFL and provides an effective novel avenue for the exploration of pulsed RFL with structural simplicity, low cost and stable output.

Abstract:Ultrafast Raman fiber laser has been proved to be an effective method to obtain ultrafast optical pulses at special wavelength. Yet, compared with conventional rare-earth doped counterparts, it is challenging for Raman fiber lasers to generate pulses with high pulse energy and short pulse duration. Here, we review three categories of ultrafast Raman fiber laser technologies and give detailed discussions on the advantages and challenges of each. In regards to mode-locking, different saturable-absorbers-based fiber lasers are compared and their common problem resulting from long cavity length are discussed. In terms of synchronously-pumping, several approaches to match the repetition rate of pulsed pump with the length of Raman fiber cavity are discussed, while the technical complexity of each method is analyzed. Moreover, the recently developed technology termed as nonlinear optical gain modulation (NOGM) is introduced, which turns out to be a simple and quality solution to generate high-energy femtosecond pulses with wavelength agility. Compared with the others, NOGM gathers various advantages including simple structure, long-term stability, high pulse energy and short pulse duration, which may effectively promote application expansion of ultrafast Raman fiber laser in the near future.

Abstract:Mode-locking and ultrashort pulse synchronous pumping arc the main ways to obtain ultrashort pulses from Raman fiber lasers. In the mode-locked Raman fiber lasers, high performance output can be achieved in the structure with equivalent saturable absorbers, but the limitation caused by the long gain fiber remains. The method of synchronous pumping can overcome this problem effectively and achieve excellent ultrafast Raman laser output. There is a great potential for the ultrafast Raman fiber laser technology, and future research will focus on further improving the overall performance of various ultrafast Raman fiber lasers and investigating new phenomena observed in these laser systems.

Abstract:Random lasers are a type of lasers that lack typical resonator structures, offering benefits such as easy integration, low cost, and low spatial coherence. These features make them popular for speckle-free imaging and random number generation. However, due to their high threshold and phase instability, the production of picosecond random lasers has still been a challenge. In this work, we have developed three dyes incorporating polymer optical fibers doped with various scattering nanoparticles to produce short-pulsed random fiber lasers. Notably, stable picosecond random laser emission lasting600 ps is observed at a low pump energy of 50 μJ, indicating the gain-switching mechanism. Population inversion and gain undergo an abrupt surge as the intensity of the continuously pumped light nears the threshold level. When the intensity of the continuously pumped light reaches a specific value, the number of inversion populations in the “scattering cavity”surpasses the threshold rapidly. Simulation results based on a model that considers power-dependent gain saturation confirmed the above phenomenon. This research helps expand the understanding of the dynamics behind random medium-stimulated emission in random lasers and opens up possibilities for mode locking in these systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate a low-threshold and multi-wavelength Q-switched random fiber laser with erbium-doped fiber as the gain medium and Rayleigh scattering as the randomly distributed feedback. Q-switched pulses are generated with threshold as low as 27 mW by combining random cavity resonances and the Q-value modulation effect induced by stimulated Brillouin scattering. The repetition rate is typically on the kilohertz scale with rms timing jitter of < 5.5% and rms amplitude fluctuation of < 30%. Raman Stokes emissions up to the third order are observed with an overall energy of nearly 42% of the pulse output, which may open an avenue for applications requiring multiple wavelengths. Abstract:The mode locking of a Raman fiber laser with an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) pump source is investigated for performance improvement. Raman dissipative solitons with a compressed pulse duration of 1.05 ps at a repetition rate of 2.47 MHz are generated by utilizing nonlinear polarization rotation and all-fiber Lyot filter. A signal-to-noise ratio as high as 85 dB is measured in a radio-frequency spectrum, which suggests excellent temporal stability. Multiple-pulse operation with unique random static distribution is observed for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, at higher pump power in mode-locked Raman fiber lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate a random distributed feedback Raman fiber laser with relatively short cavity in a half open cavity scheme. A record output power of 4 W in 1173 nm is obtained and the slope efficiency is more than 90%. Second-order Stokes wave at 1237 nm is also achieved with powers in two output ends of 4.1 and 0.8 W, respectively. The linewidth of the Stokes waves are recorded and discussed. We observed self-oscillation at the pump power a little above the second-order Stokes wave generation threshold, and a temporal-spatial-coupled numerical model is proposed. Numerical simulations have good agreement to the experiment results.

Abstract:We report the result of achieving a random fiber laser (RFL) with record 200-W-level power output. The highest output power is realized by a simple 120 m long cavity at a working wavelength of 1173 nm while pumping at 1120 nm. The maximum observed optical-to-optical efficiency reaches ∼89%, which is believed to be the highest value ever reported for RFLs. In addition, numerical calculations on different order Raman Stokes wave thresholds based on the theoretical model are carried out for comparison with the experimental data. The presented work effectively advances the power scalability, and the numerical model well describes the lasing thresholds in such short cavity RFLs.

Abstract:Extensive studies have been performed on random lasers in which multiple-scattering feedback is used to generate coherent emission. Q-switching and mode-locking are well-known routes for achieving high peak power output in conventional lasers. However, in random lasers, the ubiquitous random cavities that are formed by multiple scattering inhibit energy storage, making Q-switching impossible. In this paper, widespread Rayleigh scattering arising from the intrinsic micro-scale refractive-index irregularities of fiber cores is used to form random cavities along the fiber. The Q-factor of the cavity is rapidly increased by stimulated Brillouin scattering just after the spontaneous emission is enhanced by random cavity resonances, resulting in random Q-switched pulses with high brightness and high peak power. This report is the first observation of high-brightness random Q-switched laser emission and is expected to stimulate new areas of scientific research and applications, including encryption, remote three-dimensional random imaging and the simulation of stellar lasing.
Rectangular Pulse Generation from a Mode Locked Raman Fiber Laser

Abstract:Rectangular and step-like pulses are generated in a mode-locked Raman fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. The Raman laser has a typical figure-8 configuration. Stable rectangular pulses with a fundamental repetition rate of 733 kHz are obtained. As the pump power increases, the Raman pulse evolves to a step-like rectangular pulse. The maximum pulse energy is 64.1 nJ with a pulsewidth of 25.1 ns. After spectrally resolved measurements, the step-like pulse is proved to be induced by the dual wavelength oscillation. It is the first report of rectangular pulsed output in the mode-locked Raman fiber laser to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:A random fiber laser with regulated Q-switched pulses has been proposed and realized through a half-open cavity, which is formed between a compound fiber-based optic ring resonator (ORR) and a segment of 500 m dispersion compensation fiber (DCF). The compound fiber-based ORR provides frequency filtered feedback, which together with Brillouin scattering of the DCF forms a Q-switched mechanism. As a result, Q-switched pulses are generated randomly. Nevertheless, each Q-switched event typically consists of several ordered sub-pulses with the same pulse interval thanks to resonant interferences of the compound fiber-based ORR. Compared with former reports, the shape and the interval of pulses in each Q-switch event are regulated greatly.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate the power scalability in a novel random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) with localized random feedback provided by an ultrashort low-reflection random fiber grating (RFG). The RFG is composed of a randomly distributed sub-grating array, and is directly written by a femtosecond laser with point-by-point inscription approach. The fabricated RFG has a total length of only 1.86 mm and thus has relatively broad reflection peaks. A narrow-band high-reflection fiber Bragg grating at the end of the Fabry-Perot cavity can easily implement spectral filtering to ensure that the RRFL only lases at the wavelength of the highest reflection peak of the RFG due to the large wavelength separation between adjacent reflection peaks in RFG. The RRFL has a low threshold of 2.16W and a high slope efficiency of 91.56, and the optical signal-to-noise ratio is 55 dB. Moreover, the spectral broadening of this RRFL is proved to be turbulence-induced square-root broadening.

Abstract:We demonstrate a multi-wavelength Q-switched random fiber laser with the erbium-doped fiber as the gain medium and the Rayleigh scattering as the randomly distributed feedback in a 6 km long single-mode fiber. Q-switched pulses and sub-pulses with different repetition frequencies were generated with the pump power as 182 mW by combining the random cavity resonances and the Q-value modulation effect induced by the stimulated Brillouin scattering and nonlinear multimode interference in the graded-index multimode fiber. The pulse repetition rate increased continuously from 79 kHz to 113 kHz, and the corresponding pulse width exponentially decreased with the continuously increasing pump power, and a shortest pulse width of 1.85 μs was obtained. At the same time, a multi-wavelength spectrum with the equally spaced interval and an optical signal-to-noise ratio of ~31 dB was achieved. This laser has the unique properties different from the conventional resonant cavity lasers, which makes it a very promising light source in optical communication, imaging, and sensing applications.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we demonstrated a watt-level average power narrow linewidth linearly polarized fiber-integrated Raman amplifier core pumped by a pulsed laser with center wavelength of 1064 nm. The gain medium in the amplifier stage is a 100-meters-long polarization-maintaining (PM) single-mode fiber. Seeded by a single-frequency (S-F) distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser, ~3.2 ns duration tunable 1120 nm laser is obtained with peak power of ~360 W. The average power of the Raman laser are 0.62W, 1.22 W and 1.83W with repetition rates of 500 KHz, 1 MHz and 1.5 MHz, respectively. More than 50% slope efficiency and 42 dB amplification is achieved. The polarization extinction rate (PER) of the Raman laser is measured to be ~21 dB.
