Abstract:In the present study we report the surface modification of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via combining both physical and chemical modification routes. Well defined nanostructures were created on PDMS surface through anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template method. On top of the nanostructures, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was coated after the nano patterned PDMS was exposed to air plasma. The influence of the combined modification on surface properties of PDMS was examined by ATR-FTIR and water contact angle measurement. The impact of plasma pretreatment time and storage time in ambient environment were investigated, and property of films with or without nanostructures was compared. Experimental results show that long-term stable hydrophilic surfaces of PDMS can be achieved by PVA coating and be further improved by the surface nanostructures. The modified PDMS was also used for cell culture. The results indicate that both nanostructuring and chemically modifying the PDMS surface improves cell growth. Additionally, combination of these surface modifications has an additive effect on cell proliferation.

Abstract:Membranes derived from ultrathin polymeric films are promising to meet fast separations, but currently available approaches to produce polymer films with greatly reduced thicknesses on porous supports still faces challenges. Here, defect-free ultrathin polymer covering films (UPCFs) are realized by a facile general approach of rapid solvent evaporation. By fast evaporating dilute polymer solutions, we realize ultrathin coating (~30 nm) of porous substrates exclusively on the top surface, forming UPCFs with a block copolymer of polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) at room temperature or a homopolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) at elevated temperatures. With subsequent selective swelling to the block copolymer and crosslinking to PVA, the resulting bi-layered composite structures serve as highly permeable membranes delivering ~2-10 times higher permeability in ultrafiltration and pervaporation applications than state-of-the-art separation membranes with similar rejections and selectivities. This work opens up a new, facile avenue for the controllable fabrication of ultrathin coatings on porous substrates, which shows great potentials in membrane-based separations and other areas.
Fast‐Crosslinking Enabled Self‐Roughed Polydimethylsiloxane Transparent Superhydrophobic Coating and Its Application in Anti‐Liquid‐Interference Electrothermal Device

Abstract:PDMS suspensions with diverse droplet sizes are synthesized and used as building blocks for surface nano/micro‐scale topology formation. By judiciously facilitating fast crosslinking of PDMS, self‐roughed neat PDMS coating is created on warm substrates via a universal spray‐coating process, which displays both superhydrophobic and transparent properties, achieving large water contact angle (155.4°) with well‐maintained transparency (T550 = 82.3%). Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)‐based transparent and superhydrophobic coatings have important applications, such as anti‐icing, corrosion resistance, self‐cleaning, etc. However, their applications are limited by the inevitable introduction of nanoparticles/high‐temperature/segmented PDMS to facilitate a raspy surface. In this study, a self‐roughed, neat PDMS superhydrophobic coating with high transparency is developed via a one‐step spray‐coating technique. PDMS suspensions with various droplet sizes are synthesized and used as building blocks for raspy surface formation by controlled curing on the warm substrate. The optimal coating exhibits a large water contact angle of 155.4° and transparency (T550 = 82.3%). Meanwhile, the employed spray‐coating technique is applicable to modify a plethora of substrates. For proof‐of‐concept demonstrations, the use of the PDMS hydrophobic coating for anti‐liquid‐interference electrothermal devices and further transparent observation window for long‐term operation in a sub‐zero environment is shown successful. The proposed facile synthesis method of hydrophobic PDMS coating is expected to have great potential for a broad range of applications in the large‐scale fabrication of fluorine‐free, eco‐friendly superhydrophobic surfaces.

Abstract:PDMS has been widely used to develop oil-water separation materials in the past few decades owing to its strong adhesion, low-surface-energy, and durability. However, traditional curing methods for PDMS suffer from time-consuming and space-limiting, therefore, a rapid and facile fabrication of PDMS based materials should be imperative to be developed for scaled-up production. Inspired by this, we employed PDMS and starch to prepare PDMS@starch composite coatings and hot air gun as a time-saving and cost-effective curing technique was applied. The coatings were effectively used to separate emulsions and oil-water mixtures, as well as exhibited excellent resistance to various water solutions owing to its high hydrophobicity. Moreover, the chemical and mechanical durability of the coatings further show a wide spectrum of envisagement in industrial application of special wetting materials. Abstract:The bonding of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic chip is one of the major concerns during the fabrication process. Plasma treatment can be applied to produce the hydrophilic groups, thus forming an irreversible bonding permanently. The surface wettability and bonding mechanism at the microscale level after plasma treatment need further investigation. In this study, the contact angle, surface morphology and the chemical composition of PDMS surface that were modified by oxygen plasma treatment were experimentally analyzed. Accordingly, molecular dynamics simulation models were constructed to investigate the wettability and bonding mechanism. Experimental results show that the contact angle decreases rapidly with the treatment time. The change in wettability mainly comes from the exposure of hydrophilic OH and CH2OH groups on silicon atoms, while the slight change in surface morphology can be negligible. With the help of hydroxyl groups, the spreading process of water droplet on the PDMS surface becomes much quicker because strong intermolecular interactions are generated. During the bonding process, atoms in both layers are gradually pushed towards the interface and penetrate each other, thus forming a reliable bonding at the interface. It is revealed in the debonding simulation that the plasma treatment on PDMS surface improves the bonding strength.

Abstract:Over the last decade, researchers have developed a variety of new analytical and clinical diagnostic devices. These devices are predominantly based on microfluidic technologies, where biological samples can be processed and manipulated for the collection and detection of important biomolecules. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most commonly used material in the fabrication of these microfluidic devices. However, it has a hydrophobic nature (contact angle with water of 110°), leading to poor wetting behavior and issues related to the mixing of fluids, difficulties in obtaining uniform coatings, and reduced efficiency in processes such as plasma separation and molecule detection (protein adsorption). This work aimed to consider the fabrication aspects of PDMS microfluidic devices for biological applications, such as surface modification methods. Therefore, we studied and characterized two methods for obtaining hydrophilic PDMS surfaces: surface modification by bulk mixture and the surface immersion method. To modify the PDMS surface properties, three different surfactants were used in both methods (Pluronic® F127, polyethylene glycol (PEG), and polyethylene oxide (PEO)) at different percentages. Water contact angle (WCA) measurements were performed to evaluate the surface wettability. Additionally, capillary flow studies were performed with microchannel molds, which were produced using stereolithography combined with PDMS double casting and replica molding procedures. A PDMS microfluidic device for blood plasma separation was also fabricated by soft lithography with PDMS modified by PEO surfactant at 2.5% (v/v), which proved to be the best method for making the PDMS hydrophilic, as the WCA was lower than 50° for several days without compromising the PDMS's optical properties. Thus, this study indicates that PDMS surface modification shows great potential for enhancing blood plasma separation efficiency in microfluidic devices, as it facilitates fluid flow, reduces cell aggregations and the trapping of air bubbles, and achieves higher levels of sample purity.

Abstract:Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) featuring a well-structured microporosity are desirable molecular sieving materials, but most are fabricated under harsh synthesis conditions (e.g., high temperature and pressure) and are insoluble, which is challenging for processing them into continuous membranes. Herein, in situ formation of imine-linked, 31-nm-thick CMP nanofilms supported on porous polymeric substrates via catalysis diffusion-controlled interfacial polymerization (IP) under mild conditions is reported. The diffusion of catalyst acetic acid (AcOH) from the water phase to the interface enables acceleration of the aldehyde-amine condensation from the oil phase and thus the formation of CMP nanofilms within 10 min. The micropore size and thickness of CMP membranes were feasibly regulated by rational utilization of molecular ligands and control of IP parameters. Importantly, introducing hydroxyl groups adjacent to aldehyde enlarges CMP pore apertures from 1.0 to 1.7 nm due to the reduced reactivity induced by steric hindrance and the formed intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The newly synthesized 2,5-dihydroxyterephthaldeyde–m-phenylenediamine membranes display an extraordinarily high water permeance (240.0 L m–2 h–1 bar–1) and an excellent brilliant blue R (825.9 Da) rejection (i.e., 98.3%). In addition, the CMP membranes achieve an unprecedented sieving capability for both dye/dye and dye/divalent salt mixtures. Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), as a representative membrane material with superior permeability, attracts great attention in gas separation, pervaporation and nanofiltration. However, the fabrication of defect-free ultrathin PDMS membrane remains great challenge mainly due to the difficulty in controlling the processability and substrate pore penetration of casting solution. In this work, for the first time, we employed PDMS monomer terminated with acryloyloxy groups (AC-PDMS) to implement fabrication of thin-film composite (TFC) membrane. The ultraviolet (UV) reactivity between acryloyloxy groups induced fast curing of AC-PDMS casting solution, thereby realizing formation of ultrathin selective layer (∼260 nm) and inhibition of substrate pore penetration. By optimizing the UV wavelength, irradiation time and polymer concentration, the resulting AC-PDMS TFC membrane achieved attractive CO2 permeance of 9635 GPU, with CO2/N2 selectivity of 11.5. Furthermore, chain crosslinking and packing behavior, fabrication of TFC membrane and transport property of AC-PDMS were compared with conventional hydroxyl-terminated PDMS (OH-PDMS). Together with the potential in scalable fabrication, the strategy based on UV crosslinking acryloyloxy-terminated monomers provides a new avenue to produce ultrathin PDMS membranes toward practical application in molecular separation.

Abstract:A major goal of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfabrication is to develop a simple and inexpensive method for rapid fabrication. Despite the recent advancements in this field, facile PDMS microfabrication on non-planar surfaces remains elusive. Here we report a facile method for rapid prototyping of PDMS microdevices via mu PLAT (microscale plasma-activated templating) on non-planar surfaces through micropatterning of hydrophilic/hydrophobic (HL/HB) interface by flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) hollow-out mask. This mask can be easily prepared with flexible PVC film through a cutting crafter and applied as pattern definer during the plasma treatment for microscale HL/HB interface formation on different substrates. The whole process requires low inputs in terms of time as well as toxic chemicals. Inspired by liquid molding, we demonstrated its use for rapid prototyping of PDMS microstructures. Following the proof-of-concept study, we also demonstrated the use of the flexible hollow-out mask to facilitate cell patterning on curved substrates, which is difficult to realize with conventional methods. Collectively, our work utilizes flexible and foldable PVC film as mask materials for facile microscale HL non-planar surface modification to establish a useful tool for PDMS prototyping and cell patterning.
Hydrophilic surface modification of PDMS for droplet microfluidics using a simple, quick, and robust method via PVA deposition

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a dominant material in the fabrication of microfluidic devices to generate water-in-oil droplets, particularly lipid-stabilized droplets, because of its highly hydrophobic nature. However, its key property of hydrophobicity has hindered its use in the microfluidic generation of oil-in-water droplets, which requires channels to have hydrophilic surface properties. In this article, we developed, optimized, and characterized a method to produce PDMS with a hydrophilic surface via the deposition of polyvinyl alcohol following plasma treatment and demonstrated its suitability for droplet generation. The proposed method is simple, quick, effective, and low cost and is versatile with respect to surfactants, with droplets being successfully generated using both anionic surfactants and more biologically relevant phospholipids. This method also allows the device to be selectively patterned with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions, leading to the generation of double emulsions and inverted double emulsions.

Abstract:The design of membrane pore is critical for membrane preparation. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane exhibits outstanding properties in the water-treatment field. However, it is a huge challenge to prepare PVDF macro-pore plasma separation membrane by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS). Herein, a facile strategy is proposed to prepare PVDF macro-pore plasma separation membrane via macromolecular interaction. ATR-FTIR and 1H NMR showed that the intermolecular interaction existed between polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). It could significantly affect the PVDF macro-pore membrane structure. The maximum pore of the PVDF membrane could be effectively adjusted from small-pore/medium-pore to macro-pore by changing the molecular weight of PEO. The PVDF macro-pore membrane was obtained successfully when PEO-200 k existed with PVP. It exhibited higher plasma separation properties than the currently used plasma separation membrane. Moreover, it had excellent hemocompatibility due to the similar plasma effect, hemolysis, prothrombin time, blood effect and complement C3a effect with the current utilized plasma separation membrane, implying its great potential application. The proposed facile strategy in this work provides a new method to prepare PVDF macro-pore plasma separation membrane by NIPS.

Abstract:Simple sealing methods for poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/glass-based capillary electrophoresis (CE) microchips by UV irradiation are described. Further, we examined the possibility to modify the inner surface of separation channels, using polymethylacrylamide (PDMA) as a dynamic coating reagent. The surface properties of native PDMS, UV-irradiated PDMS, and PDMA-coated PDMS were systematically studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM), infrared absorption by attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy, and contact angle measurement. We found that PDMA forms a stable coating on PDMS and glass surfaces, eliminating the nonhomogeneous electroosmotic flow (EOF) in channels on PDMS/glass microchips, and improving the hydrophilicity of PDMS surfaces. Mixtures of flavin mononucleotide (FMN), flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), and fluorescein were separated in 35 s using PDMA-coated PDMS/glass microchips. A high efficiency of theoretical plates with at. least 1365 (105 000 N/m) and a good reproducibility with relative standard deviations (RSD) below 4% in five successive separations were achieved.

Abstract:An integrated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microchip with two sharpened stretching tips for convenient sample injecting, running buffer refreshing and channel cleaning has been presented. The sample was directly introduced into the separation channel through the stretching inlet tip without complicated power switching supplies and injection cross channel. The operation of running buffer refreshing or channel cleaning was simplified by vacuuming one end of the tip and placing the other tip into the solution via]. Therefore, this fabrication method can be easily applied to most analytical laboratories economically without soft lithography and plasma bonding equipments. The attractive performance of the novel PDMS microchips has been demonstrated by using laser-induced fluorescence detection for separation of proteins. The addition of 0.04% Brij 35 in 0.04 mol/L phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) can reduce the adhesion of proteins in multienzyme tablet and make separation more easily. The electroosmotic flow (EOF) exhibits pH-independence in the range of 3-11 in dynamic modified microchannel.

Abstract:Microfluidics is an emerging field that has given rise to a large number of scientific and technological developments over the last few years. The materials that have been employed for the construction of microfluidic devices have been diverse, ranging from traditional materials, such as silicon and glass, to newer polymeric materials. For instance, by using plasma technology, a microfluidic PDMS can be made to have a hydrophilic characteristic on its layer. PDMS is commonly used as microfluidic devices owing to its prominent properties such as transparency, biocompatibility, and cost effectiveness. Various shapes of electrodes in this work were prepared by directly firing the plasma through a specified layer region for duration of 1 to 3 mins. The contact angle was measured using a digital microscope on the specified layer region. The lowest contact angle was achieved in the case of wire-like electrodes in which it was measured to be 28.07°, substantially lower than those obtained in the cases of normal (56.42°) and hollow (33.25°) shapes for the same duration of plasma treatment (3 mins).

Abstract:Surface modification of ultrafine ceramic powders will prevent the agglomeration and improve the dispersion of powders in organic medium. Plasma polymerization is a solvent-free, room temperature process that can be used to rapidly deposit thin polymer film onto a wide variety of substrates. In this paper, different kinds of polymer films with the sizes of several nanometers were coated on the surface of ultrafine ZrO2 powders by the way of low temperature plasma polymerization. The encapsulation was confirmed by TEM, TGA, and DRIFT. The dispersion of plasma treated ZrO2 powders in organic medium was improved compared with untreated ZrO2 powders.
Multilayer Hydroxyethyl Cellulose-Adsorbed Coating on Poly(Dimethylsiloxane) Microchips for Protein Separation

Abstract:In this paper, we present a fast method for generation of hydrophilic surface coating for poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microchip. The native PDMS surface was modified by multilayer-adsorbed and heat-immobilized hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) after hydrogen peroxide solution treatment. Repeating the coating procedure three times was found to produce the most effective coating. The three-layer HEC coating converts the original PDMS surface from a hydrophobic one into a hydrophilic surface, and suppressed the electroosmotic flow (EOF) in HEC-coated channels over a wide pH range of 3-11. Four fluorescently labeled enzymes derived from multienzyme tablet were separated satisfactorily on the HEC-adsorbed PDMS microchip. Good separation of standard proteins based on molecular weight was also obtained on the coated chip.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the tunable wetting behavior of Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) by nanostructuring and plasma treatments, which shows stable superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity. The PDMS film with high-density nanoporous was prepared by replica molding of the black silicon surface fabricated by an improved deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) process. This simple nanostructuring can increase the roughness and reduce the surface energy of PDMS. The conventional equipment for micro fabrication (i.e. inductively couple plasma etcher) was used to realize plasma treatment to modify the wettability. The effects of different plasma gases on wettability are attributed to physical and chemical mechanisms, which have been investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), respectively. The optimized recipe was obtained after additional chemical analysis. Eventually, the static contact angles of this PDMS membrane remarkably achieved similar to 160 degrees and similar to 3 degrees, respectively. Furthermore, the recovery of wettability was reduced by nanostructuring PDMS surface.

Abstract:PDMS is enjoying continued and ever increasing popularity as the material of choice for microfluidic devices due to its low cost, ease of fabrication, oxygen permeability and optical transparency. However, PDMS's hydrophobicity and fast hydrophobic recovery after surface hydrophilization, attributed to its low glass transition temperature of less than -120 degrees C, negatively impacts on the performance of PDMS-based microfluidic device components. This issue has spawned a flurry of research to devise longer lasting surface modifications of PDMS, with particular emphasis on microfluidic applications. This review will present recent research on surface modifications of PDMS using techniques ranging from metal layer coatings and layer-by-layer depositions to dynamic surfactant treatments and the adsorption of amphipathic proteins. We will also discuss significant advances that have been made with a broad palette of gas-phase processing methods including plasma processing, sol-gel coatings and chemical vapor deposition. Finally, we will present examples of applications and future prospects of modified PDMS surfaces in microfluidics, in areas such as molecular separations, cell culture in microchannels and biomolecular detection via immunoassays.

Abstract:Abstract Inspired by the micro-nano structure on the surface of biological materials or living organisms, micro-nano structure has been widely investigated in the field of functional coatings. Due to its large specific surface area, porosity, and dual-scale structure, it has recently attracted special attention. The typical fabrication processes of micro-nano structured coatings include sol-gel, hydrothermal synthesis, chemical vapor deposition, etc. This paper presents the main features of a recent deposition and synthesis technique, liquid plasma spraying (LPS). LPS is an important technical improvement of atmospheric plasma spraying. Compared with atmospheric plasma spraying, LPS is more suitable for preparing functional coatings with micro-nano structure. Micro-nano structured coatings are mainly classified into hierarchical-structure and binary-structure. The present study reviews the preparation technology, structural characteristics, functional properties, and potential applications of LPS coatings with a micro-nano structure. The micro-nano structured coatings obtained through tailoring the structure will present excellent performances.
