Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into fuels such as CO, CH4, and CH3OH, is a promising approach for achieving carbon neutrality. Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, where X = Cl, Br, and I) are appropriate photocatalysts for this purpose due to the merits of visible-light-active, efficient charge separation, and easy-to-modify crystal structure and surface properties. For practical applications, multiple strategies have been proposed to develop high-efficiency BiOX-based photocatalysts. This review summarizes the development of different approaches to prepare BiOX-based photocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction. In the review, the fundamentals of photocatalytic CO2 reduction are introduced. Then, several widely used modification methods for BiOX photocatalysts are systematacially discussed, including heterojunction construction, introducing oxygen vacancies (OVs), Bi-enrichment, heteroatom-doping, and morphology design. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the design of future BiOX-based photocatalysis for efficient CO2 reduction are examined.

Abstract:Employing photocatalysis to diminish CO 2 concentrations when exposed to visible spectrum illumination, converting it into energy materials and chemical products, is an effective method to achieve carbon cycling. Among the many catalysts, lanthanide-based metals, with gradually filling 4 f orbitals that give them unique electronic structures, have garnered significant focus on the domain of decreasing CO 2 via photocatalytic methods. Lanthanide metals exhibit a 4 f orbital shielding effect, meaning that the f -electrons neither engage in atomic interactions or have substantial orbital convergence with ligands. This minimizes the influence of the external environment on the outer electrons, allowing lanthanide-based catalysts to remain stable. This distinctive property also helps increase surface defects in the catalyst, forming charge bridges or heterojunctions that promote rapid electron transfer and inhibit the reunion of electrons and vacancies. To fully harness the photogenerated electrons in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. However, as a result of the Laporte selection rule, the kinetic functionality of lanthanide metals is somewhat restricted and requires sensitization by other components. Therefore, understanding and designing the regulatory mechanisms of lanthanide metals is a notable area that warrants further investigation and analysis. Unfortunately, comprehensive reports in this field remain quite limited. Against this backdrop, this paper primarily summarizes the latest developments in lanthanide-based catalysts for CO 2 reduction. It concentrates on the regulatory mechanisms of different lanthanide elements in the CO 2 reduction method and elucidates the reduction mechanisms. Various photoelectrochemical tests, such as Transient Absorption Spectroscopy (TAS) and Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction (SXRD), have also confirmed that lanthanide catalysts can boost the efficiency of CO 2 mitigation. Lastly, the challenges facing lanthanide catalysts within the sphere of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction are discussed, and recommendations for future research directions are provided.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction (PCR) can convert solar energy into chemicals, fuels, and feedstocks, but is limited by the deficiencies of photocatalysts in controlling photon-to-electron transformation and activating CO2 molecules, thus leading to an insufficient yield and selectivity. Here, we synthesized α-Ga2O3 with oxygen vacancies (OVs) as local active sites for regulating the light absorption and charge carrier transmission. However, the photoexcited protons are inclined to enable H2 formation at the OVs, resulting in the deterioration of the selectivity of PCR. Therefore, we further used chemical reduction to deposit the cocatalyst of bismuth nanoparticles (Bi NPs) on the surface of α-Ga2O3 to construct a new synergistic Bi-OV active center. The active structure can significantly enhance the CO2 adsorption and activation. Due to the weak intrinsic hydrogen adsorption capacity of Bi NPs with the large free energy barrier for the H* formation, effective inhibition of the H2 evolution can be achieved. Simultaneously, the free energy barrier of intermediate CH2* formation becomes higher on Bi-OV sites, making the formation of CH4 difficult. Thus, the Bi-OV synergistic active center can favorably inhibit H2 evolution and highly improve the conversion efficiency and selectivity of CO2-to-CO. The concept of combination of a metal cocatalyst with oxygen vacancy in simultaneously promoting activity and selectivity could be extended to diverse catalysis systems.

Abstract:A Z-scheme Bi2O2CO3/Bi/NiAl-LDH (BBOC/LDH) nanosheet heterojunction was fabricated by a hydrothermal method. The BBOC/LDH composites exhibited superior performance for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. A maximum yield of CH4 with the value of 56.64 μmol/gcat was achieved on 20%BBOC/LDH composite, which was 3.9-fold higher than pure LDH. Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide has attracted remarkable attention. However, the photocatalytic efficiency is restricted to the poor capacity of adsorption and activation for CO2 molecules on the surface of catalyst. Herein, La isomorphous substituted BiOBr is prepared by a convenient chemical method with La3+ replacing Bi3+. For CO2 photoreduction, the La-substituted BiOBr shows CO yield of 154.4 μmol·g−1·h−1, being 7.1-fold as higher as original BiOBr. Experimental and calculation results manifest that surface frustrated Lewis acid and base sites of La3+-O2− pairs are formed on the surface of BiOBr with adulteration of La and increased oxygen vacancies, which could be conductive to the adsorption and activation for CO2 molecules. This work not only suggests a possible mechanism for photocatalytic reduction of CO2, but also opens up a new opportunity for the preparation of efficient catalysts for CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction in presence of H2O provides an ideal way to alleviate the greenhouse effect and obtain valuable chemicals. Constructing active sites on the surface of photocatalysts significantly affects the activity and selectivity of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, which involves a multi-electron reduction process. Herein, we anchor Ag and Pd particles on the surface of layered perovskite SrBi2Ta2O9 to build CO and CH4 evolution sites, respectively, via a photodeposition method. Ag and Pd not only attract and accumulate the photoinduced electrons originating from SrBi2Ta2O9 due to the formed Schottky junction between them, but also activate CO2 molecules, thereby resulting in higher CO2 reduction activity. On the surface of Ag, intermediate species CO* desorb and form CO directly, whereas, on the surface of Pd, intermediate species CO* is further hydrogenated to form CH4, thus resulting in different selectivity. This work offers a new avenue for developing photocatalysts with high activity and selectivity for CO2 reduction.

Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 on BiOX： Effect of Halogen Element Type and Surface Oxygen Vacancy Mediated Mechanism

Abstract:Photo-chemical conversion of CO2 into solar fuels by photocatalysts has attracted significant attention. However, poor reaction efficiency remains a huge obstacle. Deep insight into the reaction mechanism of CO2, especially the active site of photocatalyst could provide scientific basis for the development of more efficient photocatalyst. The high inertness of CO2 and the multi-electron reduction feature on a photocatalyst determine high complexity of the reaction for the study. Here, pure Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, where X = F, CI, Br, I) with the layered structure, which were synthesized by both hydrothermal method and chemical precipitation method, were selected as model photocatalysts. The photocatalytic behaviors of the samples were evaluated by the CO2 reduction with H2O without the additional photosensitizer and sacrificial agent. The as-prepared BiOBr was observed to exhibit the best CO2 photoreduction performance under the simulated sunlight. The evolution rates of CO and CH4 are 21.6 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) and 1.2 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), respectively. The effects of water dosage, light intensity and irradiation time on the efficiency of CO2 photoreduction were investigated systematically. Interestingly, the reduction selectivity of CO2 to CO almost reaches 100% in the case of high light intensity. By combination with isotopic tracing method, electron spin-paramagnetic resonance (ESA), in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) characterization, positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) spectra, and Density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the oxygen vacancy mediated mechanism of photoreduction CO2 was suggested for BiOX. This work provides new information and insights to deepen the understanding for defect photocatalysis on CO2 reduction of semiconductor.
Visible-Light Driven CO2 Reduction to CO by Co3O4 Supported on Tungsten Oxide

Abstract:The exploration of support effect and interface effect on a homogeneous-heterogeneous hybrid CO2 reduction photocatalytic system is deficient. Herein, we constructed oxides (WO3, Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2, and CuO) supported Co-based photocatalysts via an incipient wetness impregnation method for visible-light driven CO2 reduction with the assistance of a photosensitizer ([Ru(bpy)(3)]Cl-2) and a sacrificial electron donor (triethanolamine) under mild conditions. Among them, the WO3 supported Co-based photocatalyst (named 1Co/W) exhibited the highest CO generation rate (29.34 mu mol h(-1)) with 81% selectivity and 0.73% apparent quantum yield. Moreover, the unit mass activity of surface Co components was up to 296.35 mmol g(Co)(-1) h(-1). Experimental studies and characterization analyses indicated that the superior photocatalytic performance of 1Co/W benefited from the following aspects: (1) the well-matched band structure between 1Co/W and the photosensitizer for charge transfer and the suitable conduction band position for CO2 conversion; (2) the tight interface structure between surface Co active species and WO3 support accelerating the carrier migration kinetics and providing efficient cobalt active sites for CO2 adsorption and activation; and (3) the dispersion and stabilization effect of WO3 on surface Co active species.

Abstract:The photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) has emerged as a compelling strategy for the conversion of renewable energy. However, the expeditious recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and the inadequate light absorption capabilities are currently predominant challenges. Herein, we developed a facile hydrothermal approach to synthesize a sulfur doped Bi2O2CO3 nanosheet with a tunable energy band structure designed to enhance visible light absorption. Our findings indicate that the incorporation of sulfur into the catalytic sites induces an electron sink effect, significantly improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Consequently, this sulfur-doped Bi2O2CO3 catalyst exhibits a remarkable carbon monoxide (CO) yield of 16.64 μmol gcat-1 h-1 with nearly 100 % selectivity under illumination ranging from 420 to 780 nm. Through in-situ characterization techniques and theoretical calculations, it was revealed that sulfur-coordinated bismuth sites greatly enhance CO2 adsorption and decrease the energy barrier for critical intermediates formation (*COOH), thus selectively driving the reaction towards CO production. This work not only advances our understanding of mechanisms underlying photocatalytic reduction of CO2 on sulfur-doped bismuth-based catalysts but also sets a precedent for developing sophisticated photocatalytic systems for enhanced photoreduction reactions.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 has attracted wide attention because of its clean and pollution-free nature. Poor product selectivity and catalytic activity are considered to be the main obstacles limiting the application of CO2 photoreduction. Bromine-substitued bismuth oxysulfide was prepared via hydrothermal method. The optimal bromine-substituted bismuth oxysulfide exhibits improved photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction, with yield of CO up to 110.2 mu mol center dot g- 1 center dot h-1, approached 100% selectivity, which is 34.4 times higher that of the original Bi2O2S. It is found that introduction of bromine for Bi2O2S is conductive to the newly photogengerated oxygen vacancy in the photocatalytic process, which is beneficial for the adsorption and activation of reactants of H2O and CO2, thus boosting the photocatalytic reduction of CO2. This work get rise to a rational design of efficient photocatalyst and understand the photocatalytic mechanism at the atomic level.
LaCoO 3 supported Pt for efficient photo-thermal catalytic reverse water-gas shift via the Mott-Schottky effect

Abstract:The conversion of CO 2 into valuable chemicals like CO through the reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) process is a significant strategy for both mitigating and utilizing atmospheric CO 2 . It is crucial to enhance catalytic performance for RWGS at low-temperatures by designing efficient photo-thermal co-catalysts with strong photo-response and photo-thermal effects. Herein, Pt nanoparticles (NPs) supported on LaCoO 3 with Mott-Schottky heterojunctions were synthesized to improve the performance of RWGS at low-temperatures. The results show that the narrow bandgap of LaCoO 3 has excellent light-absorbing properties, generating abundant photo-carriers under light irradiation. The presence of ultra-small Pt NPs effectively reduces carrier recombination, enhancing carrier separation efficiency. 1.0 Pt/LaCoO 3 (1.0 wt% Pt loading) at 350 °C under photo-thermal conditions showed a CO 2 conversion of 32.9 % and CO production rate of 58.6 mmol g cat −1 h −1 . The excellent photo-thermal co-catalytic performance of Pt/LaCoO 3 was attributed to the remarkable Mott-Schottky heterojunctions of Pt with high electron density and the narrow bandgap of the support with abundant surface defects. This study provides valuable insights into the development of Mott-Schottky heterojunction catalysts for efficient photo-thermal co-catalytic RWGS at low-temperatures.

Abstract:Photocatalyic CO2 in the atmosphere to fuels and value-added chemicals has been a promising artificial carbon cycle to combat the global climate crisis, the accomplishment of which however is strongly reliant on efficient catalysts, i.e. high selectivity and conversion rate, robustness, etc. In this work, we provided our solution by fabricating a lead-free perovskite Cs3Bi2Br9/MOF 525 Co structure, where narrow band Cs3Bi2Br9 QDs for efficient light trapping and selective CO2 adsorption, coupling with MOF to form a Cs3Bi2Br9/MOF 525 Co type-II heterojunction for efficient electron-hole separation. By this way, three crucial steps of light absorption, carrier transportation and highly selective surface catalysis are fully taken into account and the photocatalyst showed high CO selectivity of 99.5% and an outstanding electron consumption rate of 124.8 μmol g-1 h-1 (61.2 μmol g-1 h-1 for CO, and 0.3 μmol g-1 h-1 for CH4) superior to previous reports. Femtosecond transient absorption measurements disclosed ultrafast electron transfer of 136 ps from Cs3Bi2Br9 to MOF 525 Co within the heterojunction, enabling the efficient charge separation with a long carrier time over ns time scale; while in situ infrared measurements unravelled the stronger CO2 adsorption, efficient conversion to *COOH intermediates and prompt CO desorption of the photocatalyst. The work thus elucidated the underlying mechanism accounting for the high product selectivity, providing guidelines for design efficient catalysts from the perspective of dynamics and surface reaction activity.

Abstract:Single-phase samples of compounds occurring in La 2 O 3 –CoO–Sb 2 O 5 system have been prepared by the thermal decomposition of nitrates, citrate method, and co-precipitation with hydrothermal treatment of precipitate followed by annealing. Their catalytic properties in CO oxidation reaction have been studied. It has been found that LaCo 1/3 Sb 5/3 O 6 catalyst with rosiaite structure obtained by co-precipitation method with hydrothermal treatment of precipitate followed by annealing showed the highest activity at low temperatures and stability in cyclic testing. This catalyst provides 90% conversion of CO at 265°C. The surface of LaCo 1/3 Sb 5/3 O 6 has been studied by XPS, TPD-O 2 (temperature-programmed desorption of oxygen), and IR spectroscopy. It has been shown that Langmuir–Hinshelwood model is the most probable mechanism of catalytic CO oxidation, which is accompanied by redox processes Co 3+ ↔ Co 2+ and Sb 3+ ↔ Sb 5+ with participation of surface-active forms of oxygen and vacancies. Antimony ions in this process play role of electron donor, whose increased concentration favors to the acceleration of adsorption processes and formation of active oxygen forms on the surface. The lack of sample surface contamination has been found during catalysis, which excludes the need of its regeneration.

Abstract:The design of efficient and stable photocatalysts for robust CO2 reduction without sacrifice reagent or extra photosensitizer is still challenging. Herein, a single-atom catalyst of isolated single atom cobalt incorporated into Bi3O4Br atomic layers is successfully prepared. The cobalt single atoms in the Bi3O4Br favors the charge transition, carrier separation, CO2 adsorption and activation. It can lower the CO2 activation energy barrier through stabilizing the COOH* intermediates and tune the rate-limiting step from the formation of adsorbed intermediate COOH* to be CO* desorption. Taking advantage of cobalt single atoms and two-dimensional ultrathin Bi3O4Br atomic layers, the optimized catalyst can perform light-driven CO2 reduction with a selective CO formation rate of 107.1 µmol g−1 h−1, roughly 4 and 32 times higher than that of atomic layer Bi3O4Br and bulk Bi3O4Br, respectively.

Abstract:A Co-doped MnO(2)catalyst with a trace amount of Co was synthesized by a selective dissolution method using LaMn(0.9)Co(0.1)O(3)as a perovskite precursor. The obtained catalyst exhibited much higher catalytic activity than pure LaMn(0.9)Co(0.1)O(3)and MnO(2)with excellent selectivity to CO(2)and resistance to H2O in the range of 90-350 degrees C. Its superior performance was induced by the surface reducibility, surface-active oxygen, and the synergistic effect between the trace amount of Co and MnO2.
