Abstract:Abstract In this editorial we introduce a new non-profit open access journal, Imaging Neuroscience. In April 2023, editors of the journals NeuroImage and NeuroImage:Reports resigned, and a month later launched Imaging Neuroscience. NeuroImage had long been the leading journal in the field of neuroimaging. While the move to fully open access in 2020 represented a positive step toward modern academic practices, the publication fee was set to a level that the editors found unethical and unsustainable. The publisher of NeuroImage, Elsevier, was unwilling to reduce the fee after much discussion. This led us to launch Imaging Neuroscience with MIT Press, intended to replace NeuroImage as our field’s leading journal, but with greater control by the neuroimaging academic community over publication fees and adoption of modern and ethical publishing practices.

Computational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine

Abstract:Increasingly wider availability of biomedical imaging modalities, such as X-ray computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasonic imaging, positron emission tomography (PET), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and optical imaging, have led to significant progresses in both biomedical research and clinical practice. Advancements in imaging technology and image informatics have facilitated and enabled quantitative understanding of the biological structures, functional organisms, and pathological mechanisms. This special issue presents 14 latest research contributions in computational biomedical imaging. The focuses have been on the computational principles, strategies, methods, and algorithms that create, extract, and understand imaging data of biomedical significance. The first group of papers has showcased the development and applications of rigorous optimization techniques in biomedical imaging. The work based on dual unscented Kalman filtering provides a reliable and efficient platform to understand the BOLD signals from fMRI. In the other paper, the robust discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm is adopted to solve the branch-cut phase unwrapping problem of MRI data. Without the need for a regularization penalty term, a semigreed method for bioluminescence tomography reconstruction is fast and stable for small animal imaging. The second group of papers has addressed image segmentation and tissue characterization problems, ever popular among image analysis researchers. The work of L. Li et al. applies machine learning techniques to characterize lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer from gemstone spectral imaging with much improved outcomes, while G. V. Sanchez. Ferrero et al. make new advances in ultrasonic speckle characterization using generalized Gama distribution and generalized Gama mixture model. In recent years, physically meaningful modeling and simulation have become integral components for model-constrained imaging and model-based image understanding. Thus, the third group of papers has continued the stride in this direction. The propagation of myocardial electrical activation is simulated using a monodomain model, without the need of explicit mesh constraints. In similar spirit, one work performs forward modeling of 3D optical molecular imaging with simplified spherical harmonics approximation using extended finite element method. The final group of papers has highlighted some new imaging modalities and their potential use in clinical practice. The further development of ultrasound-based quantitative imaging of Young's modulus with high accuracy is presented in this issue. And the novel Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging shows that more detailed classification of brain tissues is clinical significance. We appreciate the many high quality submissions to this special issue from leading researchers in computational biomedical imaging. Because of space limitation, we can only accept a small number of most exciting works. We sincerely hope that the remaining interesting research outcomes will be soon published in other venues.

There is a renaissance in the research of photonic computing driven by the demands of artificial intelligence and neuromorphic computing on current digital electronic hardware (which has a central processor and separated memory for sequential processing). Optical physics could enable non-von Neumann computing and potentially enable new applications that require low latency, high bandwidth, and low energies. This special issue will cover the current status, prospects, and challenges of the field in using light for neuromorphic computing, machine learning, and quantum information processing. Abstract:Human kind is exposed to large amounts of data. According to statistics, more than 80% of information received by humans comes from the visual system. Therefore, image information processing is not only an important research topic but also a challenging task. The unique information processing mechanism of the human visual system provides it with fast, accurate, and efficient image processing capabilities. At present, many advanced image analysis and processing techniques have been widely used in image communication, geographic information systems, medical image analysis, and virtual reality. However, there is still a large gap between these technologies and the human visual system. Therefore, building an image system research mechanism based on the biological vision system is an attractive but difficult target. Although it is a challenge, it can also be considered as an opportunity which utilizes biologically inspired ideas. Meanwhile, through the integration of neural biology, biological perception mechanisms, and computer science and mathematical science, related research can bridge biological vision and computer vision. Finally, the biologically inspired image analysis and processing system is expected to be built on the basis of further consideration of the learning mechanism of the human brain.

Abstract:Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has emerged as a promising, advanced technology in remote sensing and has demonstrated great potential in the exploitation of a wide variety of data. In particular, its capability has expanded from unmixing data samples and detecting targets at the subpixel scale to finding endmembers, which generally cannot be resolved by multispectral imaging. Accordingly, a wealth of new HSI research has been conducted and reported in the literature in recent years. The aim of this Special Issue “Advances in Hyperspectral Data Exploitation“ is to provide a forum for scholars and researchers to publish and share their research ideas and findings to facilitate the utility of hyperspectral imaging in data exploitation and other applications. Abstract:Perception is a complex process that involves brain activities at different levels. The availability of models for the representation and interpretation of the sensory information opens up new research avenues that cut across neuroscience, imaging, information engineering, and modern robotics. The goal of the multidisciplinary field of perceptual signal processing is to identify the features of the stimuli that determine their “perception,” namely “a single unified awareness derived from sensory processes while a stimulus is present,” and to establish associated computational models that can be generalized and exploited for designing a human-centered approach to imaging. In the case of vision, the stimuli go through a complex analysis chain of visual pathways, starting with the encoding by the photoreceptors in the retina (low-level processing) and ending with cognitive mechanisms (high-level processes) that depend on the task being performed. Accordingly, low-level models are concerned with image representation and aim at emulating the way that the visual stimulus is encoded by the early stages of the visual system, as well as at capturing the varying sensitivity to the features of the input stimuli, whereas high-level models are related to image interpretation and allow to predict the performance of a human observer in a predefined task. A global model that accounts for both such bottom-up and top-down approaches would enable an automatic interpretation of the visual stimuli based on both low-level features and semantic contents. In image processing, methods that take advantage of such models include feature extraction, content-based image description and retrieval, model-based coding, and the emergent domain of medical image perception. This special issue gives a flavor of the scope and potential of perception-based image and video processing by providing an overview of the way that visual mechanisms at different levels can be modeled and exploited. In particular, the eleven selected papers span the following fields:

Abstract:We are delighted to share with readers of this esteemed journal our collection on what we hope will be the first of periodic (bi-annually) efforts to produce compendiums focused on stimulating the use of computationally-intelligent hybrid systems (HIS) in medical imaging and health informatics. Hybrid intelligent systems (HIS) offer the capability to handle real world complex problems involving imprecision, uncertainty, vagueness, high-dimensionality, etc. across different domains. Our special section comprises of contributions that integrate HIS techniques to solve or improve traditional approaches employed in medical image security, disease diagnosis, as well as its applications in patient readmission, epileptic electrocardiograms, etc. All studies presented in the special section were conscientiously formulated and rigorously validated using standard benchmarks and, where required, data was sourced from widely used repositories.

Abstract:X-ray computed tomography (CT) has a central role in clinical imaging, often as the first and only imaging study before definitive intervention for a wide variety of conditions. X-ray micro-CT is similarly important in preclinical imaging with anatomically and physiologically relevant small animal models of human diseases. The field of X-ray CT is entering another Spring. Buds are blooming in the areas of X-ray sources such as those based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or free-electron lasers; detectors, especially photon-counting modules; X-ray gratings; contrast agents; compressive sensing (CS); and reconstruction methods. Synergistically, these innovations can be integrated to revolutionize the CT field, achieving a quantum leap in performance for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Biophotonics is a research and technology field that sits at the interface of photonics and biomedical applications, which includes clinical diagnosis, therapeutics, biotechnology, and the environment. The integration of optics and biology has been one of the most active technology areas in the past three decades, not only in curiosity-driven research but also in terms of how these technologies are translated into practice with visible impacts within a relatively short time. A prominent example is the use of lasers and photonics technologies in ophthalmology applications such as laser vision correction, artificial lenses in cataract surgery, and retinal detachment repairs. The adoption of photonics technologies in medicine is significantly faster than other medical devices in a relatively cautious and heavily regulated area, mostly owing to its natural compatibility with minimally invasive procedures. Biophotonics is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary area at the same time. Even for a specific application, e.g., laser vision correction, many different photonics technologies may be used in combination: UV laser ablation in cornea reshaping, ultrafast laser ablation for cap cutting, image processing and modeling for procedure planning and design, and real time eye movement tracking. Many optical modalities do not require direct contact with the target, which allows several methods to be multiplexed, e.g., to provide additional sources of diagnostic contrasts or real-time feedback and guidance for therapy.

Abstract:The OSA Topical Meeting on Digital Holography and 3D Imaging (DH) was held 25-28 July 2016 in Heidelberg, Germany, as part of the Imaging Congress. Feature issues based on the DH meeting series have been released by Applied Optics (AO) since 2007. This year, AO and the Journal of the Optical Society of America B (JOSA B) jointly decided to have one such feature issue in each journal. This feature issue includes 31 papers in AO and 11 in JOSA B, and covers a large range of topics, reflecting the rapidly expanding techniques and applications of digital holography and 3D imaging. The upcoming DH meeting (DH 2017) will be held from 29 May to 1 June in Jeju Island, South Korea.
