Abstract:
Deep understanding the role of nanoclay in the thermal degradation of eco-friendly biodegradable clay/polymer nanocomposites deserves intense investigation in light of its fabrication and profound end applications. Herein, this work aims to investigate the impact of Halloysite nanotubes (Hal) on the thermal degradation performance of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephtHalate) (PBAT). It's worth noting that Hal significantly enhanced the amount of residual char seven times. More interestingly, carbonaceous deposited fully fill into the lumen of Hal and also coated onto the external surface of Hal. Further gases variations in quantity highly evidenced that Hal played as both chemical and physical roles during PBAT thermal degradation. Hal catalyzed the generation of aromatic compounds during decomposition and the consecutive dehydrogenation reaction of carbonization to char. Besides, Hal can also serve as an absorbent and a react container to confine these reactions on its surface. Based on experimental observation and analysis, the degradation mechanism of PBAT in the presence of Hal was proposed. These findings could provide a new insight into the surface structure design and improvement of thermal stability and flame retardancy of clay/polymer nanocomposites.
