Abstract:Li-S batteries hold great potential for energy storage systems due to their high theoretical capacity and low cost. However, the shuttle of polysulfides in conventional Li-S batteries with organic electrolyte results in severe problems, such as low Coulombic efficiency and poor cycling stability. Here, we developed a solid-state Li-S battery using Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) solid ceramic electrolyte instead of liquid electrolyte. Lithium film was deposited on one side of LAGP by an evaporation method to improve the contact between anode and LAGP. Sulfur-coated carbon nanotubes cathode (S-MWCNT) composition was casted on the other side of LAGP as the cathode and a small amount of ionic liquid was dropped in order to improve the ionic conductivity. This battery exhibited a high capacity of 1510 mAh g-1 in the first cycle and retained 1400 mAh g-1 after 30 cycles. Meanwhile, the Coulombic efficiency of the battery was almost 100% for each cycle, which indicated the shuttle effect was circumvented completely.

Abstract:Lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO2 ) batteries have attracted much attention due to their high theoretical energy density. However, due to the existance of lithium carbonate and amorphous carbon in the discharge products that are difficult to decompose, the battery shows low coulombic efficiency and poor cycle performance. Here, by adjusting the adsorption of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) on ruthenium (Ru) catalysts surface, this work reports an ultralow charge overpotential and long cycle life Li-CO2 battery that consists of typical lithium metal, ternary molten salt electrolyte (TMSE), and Ru-based cathode. Experimental results show that the Ru catalysts deposited on quartz nanofiber (QF) can suppress the four-electron conversion of CO2 to lithium carbonate (Li2 CO3 ). As a result, the battery shows a long-cycle-life of over 457 cycles at 1.0 A g-1 with a limited capacity of 500 mAh g-1 Ru . Remarkably, a recorded low discharge potential of ≈3.0 V has been achieved after 35 cycles at 0.5 A g-1 , with a charge potential retention of over 99%. Moreover, the battery can operate over 25 A g-1 and recover 96% potential. This battery technology paves the way for designing high-performance rechargeable Li-CO2 batteries with carbon neutrality.

In addition, the NPCF its with porous structure in RuP2 -NPCF provides superior electrical conductivity, high electrochemical stability, and enough ion/electron and space for the reversible reaction in Li-CO2 batteries. Hence, the RuP2 -NPCF cathode delivers a superior reversible discharge capacity of 11951 mAh g-1 , and achieves excellent cyclability for more than 200 cycles with low overpotentials (<1.3 V) at the fixed capacity of 1000 mAh g-1 . Abstract:With the depletion of fossil energy and increasingly serious environmental pollution, the development of renewable sources of energy is imminent. Exploration of high-efficiency energy storage and transformation materials has become the focus in the field of energy research. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a kind of porous and crystalline polymer, have attracted extensive attention. In this work, we developed a composite material (Al2O3-G-COFSO3) using COFs and alumina, which can serve as an efficient separator in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. In the composite, alumina can improve the transport ability of Li+ and thus improve conductivity and SO3-COF can effectively restrain the shuttle of polysulfides by electrostatic repulsion. At a current density of 0.05C, the composite-based battery exhibited a high capacity of 1404 mAh g-1, which ranks as one of the highest values among all of the COF-based Li-S batteries. Even at a discharge rate of 1C, it can also achieve a high experimental capacity of 999 mAh g-1 with a low decay rate of 0.061% over 500 cycles. Moreover, the battery also showed a high electrochemical stability and long-term performance stability.

Abstract:Lithium–carbon dioxide (Li–CO2) batteries with high theoretical energy density and carbon dioxide conversion ability are considered as the next generation of energy storage devices for solving electric vehicle range anxiety and reducing the greenhouse effect. However, the volatilization and leakage of traditional liquid organic electrolytes and the short circuit caused by the penetration of the lithium dendrite anode induce serious cycle and safety problems, hindering the commercial application of Li–CO2 batteries. Herein, a Zn-doped Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) solid-state ceramic electrolyte stabilized in CO2 was designed and prepared. The additive Zn2+ ions make the crystal structure of the electrolyte denser with strong mechanical properties, providing an optimized network channel for Li+ ions transmission and further improving its ionic conductivity at room temperature. The optimized Zn-doped LATP exhibited an ionic conductivity of 2.45 × 10-3 S cm−1, much higher than that of LATP (2.67 × 10-4 S cm−1). The assembled Li–CO2 battery provides a high discharge capacity of 16,585 mAh/g and more than 180 stable cycles with charge/discharge overpotential less than 1.4 V. Due to the Zn-doped structure, the reduction effect of Ti4+ ions in LATP contact with Li was proved to be effectively suppressed. This doping strategy provides a feasible method for achieving high-performance solid-state Li–CO2 batteries.

Abstract:The all-solid-state Li-air battery is a promising next-generation energy storage technique because of its high safety and high theoretical specific energy density. The all-solid-state Li-air batteries with LAGP as electrolyte layer, Li foil as anode and a mixture composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), RuO2 nanoparticles and Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5P3O12 (LAGP) as composite cathode were investigated in ambient air at room temperature. Charge overpotential was reduced because of the superior catalytic activities of RuO2 nanoparticles. Besides, SEM images showed the formation of chip-like products after discharge to 1000 mA h g(-1) and wrinkles-like products after fully discharged to 2 V, respectively. Galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) demonstrated that the equilibrium voltage of all-solid-state Li-air batteries cycling in oxygen kept stable at 2.96 V while that cycling in ambient air maintained at 3.15 V. These results indicated that the electrochemical reactions of all-solid-state Li-air batteries can be ascribed to the formation and decomposition of lithium peroxide in oxygen and electrochemical reaction with moisture in air.

Abstract:A rechargeable LiCO2 battery is one of the promising power sources for utilizing the greenhouse gas CO2 in a sustainable approach. However, highly efficient catalysts for reversible formation/decomposition of insulating discharge product, Li2CO3, are the main challenge, which can boost the cycle stability. Herein, 2D single-atom-thick graphdiyne (GDY) with abundant acetylenic bond sites is prepared by a bottom-up cross-coupling reaction strategy and used as metal-free catalysts for reversible LiCO2 batteries. The prepared GDY has a rich diacetylenic unit and atomic-level in-plane pores in the network, which can chemically adsorb the CO2 molecules and easily promote the Li+ diffusion and thereby resulting in uniform nucleation and reversible formation/decomposition of the discharge product. The GDY hybrid cathodes show a small overpotential gap of 1.4 V at a current density of 50 mA · g−1, a high full discharge capacity of 18 416 mAh · g−1 at 100 mA · g−1, and outstanding long-term stability of 158 cycles at 400 mA · g−1 with a curtailing capacity of 1000 mAh · g−1. Furthermore, a flexible belt-shaped LiCO2 battery is fabricated as a proof of concept with a high gravimetric energy density of 165.5 Wh · kg−1 (based on the mass of the whole device) as well as excellent mechanical flexibility.

Abstract:Lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) batteries, especially solid-state Li-CO2 batteries, have attracted much attention due to the high energy density and potential application of carbon neutrality. However, the extremely sluggish kinetics of CO2 evolution reaction in the batteries result in a notorious high-charge-potential over 4.0 V, thus impeding the development of Li-CO2 batteries. Here, by in-situ constructing a plasmonic Ru/Li2CO3-based heterostructure, we report an ultra-low charge overpotential and long cycle life solid-state Li-CO2 battery via the energetic hot carries produced by nonradiative decay of localized surface plasmons where solar energy can be efficintly harvested (over 90% absorption efficiency from 200 nm to 1000 nm), concentrated and converted on the plasmonic Ru catalysts. Experimental results show that the plasmonic photothermal catalysis using Ru catalysts can catalyze C-O bond cleavage and construct a plasmonic Ru/Li2CO3-based heterostructure in the battery on discharge, and effectively accelerate the CO2 envolution reaction via injecting the hot carriers generated from the plasmonic Ru catalysts into the discharged Li2CO3-based products on charge. As a result, by using a chemically stable and high Li-ion conductive MSI layer, the battery shows a record low charge potential (2.99 V) even after a long-term cycling (over 450 cycles) operating at 500 mA g−1 at 500 mAh g−1. This battery technology paves the way for developing next-generation high-specific-energy Li-CO2 batteries with carbon neutrality.

Abstract:Rechargeable Li-CO2 batteries are very attractive energy storage devices because of their high theoretical energy density and unique CO2 capture capability. Unfortunately, Li metal anode is unstable to the widely used ethers-based electrolytes, and the related Coulombic efficiency is low. Here, in the ethers-based electrolyte, the effects of CO2 to the Li metal anode was studied. Using a porous electrode, the reduced CO2 will be replenished from outside upon cycling. We found that, sufficient CO2 contributed to the formation of stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layers and protected the Li metal anode from rapid consumption. Under a current density of 1.0 mA cm(-2), the Coulombic efficiency of Li metal reached 99.0% after 200 cycles. Our work helps the researchers better understand the effects of CO2 crossover on anode and also provides a promising method to develop a stable Li metal anode for Li-CO2 battery.

Abstract:LiCoO2 (LCO) possess a high theoretical specific capacity of 274 mAh g−1, and currently LCO charged to 4.48 V with a capacity of ∼190-195 mAh g−1 is penetrating the commercial markets. Scalable strategies to further enhance the performance of LCO are highly attractive. Here, we develop a scalable ball-milling and sintering method to tackle this long-standing challenge by modifying LCO surface with only 1.5–3.5% ceramic solid electrolyte nanoparticles, specifically Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) as an example. Consequently, the atomic-to-meso multiscale structural stabilities have been significantly improved, even with a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V vs. Li/Li+, leading to excellent electrochemical stabilities. The nano-LAGP modified LiꟾLCO cell exhibits high discharge capacity of 196 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, capacity retention of 88% over 400 cycles, and remarkably enhanced rate capability (163 mAh g−1 at 6 C). These results show significant improvement compared to the LiꟾLCO cells. The as-prepared graphiteꟾLAGP-LCO full cells also show steady cycling with 80.4% capacity retention after 200 cycles with a voltage cut-off of 4.45 V. This work provides a simple and scalable approach to achieve stable cycling of LCO at high voltage with high energy density.

Ru Nanosheet Catalyst Supported by Three-Dimensional Nickel Foam As a Binder-Free Cathode for Li–CO2 Batteries

Abstract:Due to the capability of CO2 uptake and the high theoretical energy density, Li-CO2 batteries have attracted a great deal of attention as a novel and promising energy storage system which is based on the reversible reaction between lithium and CO2. However, the insulating Li2CO3 formed upon the discharge process, which is difficult to be decomposed during recharge process due to the lack of effective cathode catalyst, leads to the poor cycling performance and huge overpotential of the Li-CO2 batteries. In this work, the Ru nanosheets were directly grown on one side of the three-dimensional nickel foam through a galvanic replacement reaction to form the Ru/Ni electrode, which was further used in the Li-CO2 batteries. The highly dispersed Ru nanosheets in the Ru/Ni cathode effectively promote the decomposition of discharge product Li2CO3 and thus reduce the charge overpotential. Moreover, the typical porous and binder-free Ru/Ni electrode not only has a sturdy construction to suppress the side reaction in the Li-CO2 batteries, but also enables the rapid permeation of CO2 and electrolyte/electron into the active sites of the Ru/Ni electrode. As a result, the Ru/Ni cathode-based Li-CO2 battery exhibits the superior discharge capacity (9502 mAh g(-1)), good coulombic efficiency (95.4%) and excellent rate performance (3177mAh g(-1) at 500mA g(-1)) at the full discharge/charge condition. When operated at the limited capacity of 1000mAh g(-1), this cell can run for over 100 cycles with the charge potential below 4.1 V. Effective Ru/CNT Cathode for Rechargeable Solid-State Li–CO 2 Batteries

Abstract:An effective Ru/CNT electrocatalyst plays a crucial role in solid-state lithium–carbon dioxide batteries. In the present article, ruthenium metal decorated on a multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is introduced as a cathode for the lithium–carbon dioxide batteries with Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 solid-state electrolyte. The Ru/CNT cathode exhibits a large surface area, maximum discharge capacity, excellent reversibility, and long cycle life with low overpotential. The electrocatalyst achieves improved electrocatalytic performance for the carbon dioxide reduction reaction and carbon dioxide evolution reaction, which are related to the available active sites. Using the Ru/CNT cathode, the solid-state lithium–carbon dioxide battery exhibits a maximum discharge capacity of 4541 mA h g–1 and 45 cycles of battery life with a small voltage gap of 1.24 V compared to the CNT cathode (maximum discharge capacity of 1828 mA h g–1, 25 cycles, and 1.64 V as voltage gap) at a current supply of 100 mA g–1 with a cutoff capacity of 500 mA h g–1. Abstract:Rechargeable aprotic Li-CO2 batteries have aroused worldwide interest owing to their environmentally friendly CO2 fixation ability and ultra-high specific energy density. However, its practical applications are impeded by the sluggish reaction kinetics and discharge product accumulation during cycling. Herein, a flexible composite electrode comprising CoSe2 nanoparticles embedded in 3D carbonized melamine foam (CoSe2/CMF) for Li-CO2 batteries is reported. The abundant CoSe2 clusters can not only facilitate CO2 reduction/evolution kinetics but also serve as Li2CO3 nucleation sites for homogeneous discharge product growth. The CoSe2/CMF-based Li-CO2 battery exhibits a large initial discharge capacity as high as 5.62 mAh cm-2 at 0.05 mA cm-2, a remarkably small voltage gap of 0.72 V, and an ultrahigh energy efficiency of 85.9% at 0.01 mA cm-2, surpassing most of the noble metal-based catalysts. Meanwhile, the battery demonstrates excellent cycling stability of 1620 h (162 cycles) at 0.02 mA cm-2 with an average overpotential of 0.98 V and energy efficiency of 85.4%. Theoretical investigations suggest that this outstanding performance is attributed to the suitable CO2/Li adsorption and low Li2CO3 decomposition energy. Moreover, flexible Li-CO2 pouch cell with CoSe2/CMF cathode displays stable power output under different bending deformations, showing promising potential in wearable electronic devices.
Multi-scale stabilization of high-voltage LiCoO2 enabled by nanoscale solid electrolyte coating

Abstract:LiCoO2 (LCO) possess a high theoretical specific capacity of 274 mAh g(-1), and currently LCO charged to 4.48 V with a capacity of similar to 190-195 mAh g(-1) is penetrating the commercial markets. Scalable strategies to further enhance the performance of LCO are highly attractive. Here, we develop a scalable ball-milling and sintering method to tackle this long-standing challenge by modifying LCO surface with only 1.5-3.5% ceramic solid electrolyte nanoparticles, specifically Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)(3) (LAGP) as an example. Consequently, the atomic-tomeso multiscale structural stabilities have been significantly improved, even with a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V vs. Li/Li thorn, leading to excellent electrochemical stabilities. The nano-LAGP modified Li|LCO cell exhibits high discharge capacity of 196 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 degrees C, capacity retention of 88% over 400 cycles, and remarkably enhanced rate capability (163 mAh g(-1) at 6 degrees C). These results show significant improvement compared to the Li vertical bar LCO cells. The as-prepared graphite vertical bar LAGP-LCO full cells also show steady cycling with 80.4% capacity retention after 200 cycles with a voltage cut-off of 4.45 V. This work provides a simple and scalable approach to achieve stable cycling of LCO at high voltage with high energy density.

Abstract:The utilization of CO2 in Li-CO2 batteries is attracting extensive attention. However, the poor rechargeability and low applied current density have remained the Achilles' heel of this energy device. The gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), which is composed of a polymer matrix filled with tetraglyme-based liquid electrolyte, was used to fabricate a rechargeable Li-CO2 battery with a carbon nanotube-based gas electrode. The discharge product of Li2 CO3 formed in the GPE-based Li-CO2 battery exhibits a particle-shaped morphology with poor crystallinity, which is different from the contiguous polymer-like and crystalline discharge product in conventional Li-CO2 battery using a liquid electrolyte. Accordingly, the GPE-based battery shows much improved electrochemical performance. The achieved cycle life (60 cycles) and rate capability (maximum applied current density of 500 mA g-1 ) are much higher than most of previous reports, which points a new way to develop high-performance Li-CO2 batteries.
Breaking the Stable Triangle of Carbonate via W–O Bonds for Li-CO 2 Batteries with Low Polarization

Abstract:Li-CO2 batteries are widely studied as a promising technology for greenhouse-gas CO2 fixation as well as for energy conversion and storage devices. Their further development, however, is hindered by the refractory discharge products, leading to large polarization voltage and low round-trip efficiency. Here, W2C nanoparticles embedded in the walls of carbon nanotubes (W2C-CNTs) are prepared successfully. An efficient Li-CO2 battery with a W2C-CNTs cathode displays ultralow charge voltage (3.2 V) and high round-trip efficiency (90.1%). The low polarization comes from electron-rich W atoms that break the stable triangle of CO32– via W–O bonds. The resulting amorphous discharge products could be readily and reversibly decomposed during charging. Raman and XAS spectra provide direct and solid evidence for the W–O bonds. Abstract:Aprotic Li-CO2 batteries are a new class of green energy storage and conversion system, which can utilize the CO2 from the atmosphere in an environmentally friendly way. However, the biggest problem of the existing Li-CO2 batteries is that they suffer from high polarization and poor cycling performance, mainly caused by the insulating and insoluble discharge product, Li2CO3. Herein, this study reports the synthesis of wrinkled, ultrathin Ir nanosheets fully anchored on the surface of N-doped carbon nanofibers (Ir NSs-CNFs) as an efficient cathode for improving the performance of lithium-CO2 batteries. The battery can be steadily discharged and charged at least for 400 cycles with a cut-off capacity of 1000 mAh g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1). Meanwhile, the cathode can effectively reduce the charge overpotential by showing a charge termination voltage below 3.8 V at 100 mA g(-1), which is the smallest charge overpotential reported to date. The ex situ analysis of the intermediate products reveals that during the discharge process, Ir NSs-CNFs can greatly stabilize amorphous granular intermediate (probably Li2C2O4) and delay its further transformation into thin plate-like Li2CO3, whereas during the charge process, it can make Li2CO3 be easily and completely decomposed, which is the key in greatly improving its performance for lithium-CO2 batteries.

Abstract:Li-CO2 batteries have attracted wide attention owing to their high energy density and ability to utilize carbon dioxide. However, current Li-CO2 batteries still suffer from several unresolved problems such as low coulombic efficiency and high charge potential, and hence much work is still required to optimize the electrochemical performance of Li-CO2 batteries. In this work, Ru nanoparticles have been deposited on Super P carbon using a solvothermal method and the resulting material (Ru@Super P) has been employed as a cathode in Li-CO2 batteries. The Li-CO2 battery with Ru@ Super P as the cathode exhibits significantly reduced charge potential and can be operated for 80 cycles with a fixed capacity of 1000 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1), which is by far the best cycling stability among the reported Li-CO2 batteries. We found that Ru possesses a selective catalytic activity in promoting the reaction between Li2CO3 and carbon during charge. This characteristic of Ru helps to avoid electrolyte decomposition and improve the electrochemical performance of Li-CO2 batteries.
