Abstract:We present some new results on searches for new physics at the Tevatron Run 1 (1992 -- 1996). The topics covered are searches for R-Parity violating and conserving mSUGRA, large extra dimensions in di-photon and monojet channels, leptoquark in jets + missing Et channel, and two model independent searches. All results were finalized during the past year.

Abstract:The latest results on the measurements of electroweak top-quark production at the Tevatron are presented with the full RunII dataset. The CDF and D0 Collaborations have performed measurements of the s, t, and s+t channels in both l+jets and MET+jets final states. Evidence for the production of the s channel is presented for the first time.

Abstract:The top quark and electroweak bosons (W and Z) represent the most massive fundamental particles yet discovered, and as such refer directly to the Standard Model's greatest remaining mystery: the mechanism by which all particles gained mass. This report summarizes the work done within the top-ew group of the Tevatron-for-LHC workshop. It represents a collection of both Tevatron results, and LHC predictions. The hope is that by considering and comparing both machines, the LHC program can be improved and aided by knowledge from the Tevatron, and that particle physics as a whole can be enriched. The report includes measurements of the top quark mass, searches for single top quark production, and physics of the electroweak bosons at hadron colliders.
Distributed Algorithms for Optimal Rate-Reliability Tradeoff in Networks

Abstract:The current framework of network utility maximization for distributed rate allocation assumes fixed channel code rates. However, by adapting the physical layer channel coding, different rate-reliability tradeoffs can be achieved on each link and for each end user. Consider a network where each user has a utility function that depends on both signal quality and data rate, and each link may provide a `fatter' (`thinner') information `pipe' by allowing a higher (lower) decoding error probability. We propose two distributed, pricing-based algorithms to attain optimal rate-reliability tradeoff, with an interpretation that each user provides its willingness to pay for reliability to the network and the network feeds back congestion prices to users. The proposed algorithms converge to a tradeoff point between rate and reliability, which is proved to be globally optimal for codes with sufficiently large codeword lengths and user utilities with sufficiently negative curvatures.

Abstract:A precise determination of the W boson mass at the Fermilab Tevatron requires a theoretical calculation in which the effects of the initial-state multiple soft-gluon emission and the final-state photonic correction are simultaneously included . Here, we present such a calculation and discuss its prediction on the transverse mass distribution of the W boson and the transverse momentum distribution of its decay charged lepton, which are the most relevant observables for measuring the W boson mass at hadron colliders.

Abstract:Selected quantum chromodynamics (QCD) measurements performed at the Fermilab Run II Tevatron ppbar collider running at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV by CDF and D0 Collaborations are presented. The inclusive jet, dijet production and three-jet cross section measurements are used to test perturbative QCD calculations, constrain parton distribution function (PDF) determinations, and extract a precise value of the strong coupling constant, alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1161^{+0.0041}_{-0.0048}. Inclusive photon production cross-section measurements reveal an inability of next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations to describe low-energy photons arising directly in the hard scatter. The diphoton production cross-sections check the validity of the NLO pQCD predictions, soft-gluon resummation methods implemented in theoretical calculations, and contributions from the parton-to-photon fragmentation diagrams. Events with W/Z+jets productions are used to measure many kinematic distributions allowing extensive tests and tunes of predictions from pQCD NLO and Monte-Carlo event generators. The charged-particle transverse momenta (pT) and multiplicity distributions in the inclusive minimum bias events are used to tune non-perturbative QCD models, including those describing the multiple parton interactions (MPI). Events with inclusive production of photon and 2 or 3 jets are used to study increasingly important MPI phenomenon at high pT, measure an effective interaction cross section, sigma_eff = 16.4+- 2.3 mb, and limit existing MPI models.

Abstract:We construct an approximate renormalization for Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom in order to study the break-up of invariant tori with arbitrary frequency. We derive the equation of the critical surface of the renormalization map, and we compute the scaling behavior of the critical function of one-parameter families of Hamiltonians, near rational frequencies. For the forced pendulum model, we find the same scaling law found for the standard map in [Carletti and Laskar, preprint (2000)]. We discuss a conjecture on the link between the critical function of various types of forced pendulum models, with the Bruno function.

Abstract:This article summarizes several analyses I discussed at Moriond and I attempt to maintain my speaking voice throughout. I extract several broad themes in the recent development of QCD,and emphasize how the latest results on jet physics reinforce these themes: that QCD is in a transitional stage from providing qualitative descriptions to providing true quantitative descriptions of the results. Certain figures presented in the talk are not reproduced here in the interest of space, but can be found directly in the transparencies available online, or in the references to the refereed journals.

Abstract:This paper reviews results of beyond-the-standard model searches at the Tevatron presented in a plenary talk at the Europhysics Conference on High Energy Physics (EPS-HEP) in Grenoble. Here I present a selection of results from the CDF and D0 experiments that were shown at the conference during the parallel sessions. Much more is available and can be found at the experiment's web pages. This proceeding essentially focuses on searches in the dilepton, diboson, and t-tbar final states. Throughout the paper, hints of new physics observed at the Tevatron are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The supersymmetric QCD corrections to top quark pair production by qq annihilation in pp collisions are calculated in the minimal supersymmetric model. We consider effects of the mixing of the scalar top quarks on the corrections to the total tt production cross section at the Fermilab Tevatron. We found that such a correction is less sensitive to the squark mass and gluino mass than in the no-mixing case, and in both cases the corrections can exceed 10% even if we consider the recent CDF limit on squark and gluino masses.

Abstract:We report on recent Z (+jets) measurements from the Fermilab Tevatron proton anti-proton collider. A new D0 measurement of the transverse momentum of Z bosons yields the best measurement to date of the non-perturbative form factor, g2. The production of Z+jets is an major background to many rare signals, and is a vital testing ground for theoretical predictions. Measurements from CDF and D0 of differential cross sections in Z+jet production test NLO pQCD, and in the case of D0, the latest tree-level matrix element with matched parton shower calculations. Improving modelling of this signal will impact results from the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LHC.

Abstract:Jets have been used to verify the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), measure the structure of the proton and to search for the physics beyond the Standard Model. In this article, we review the current status of jet physics at the Tevatron, a sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collider at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We report on recent measurements of the inclusive jet production cross section and the results of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model using jets. Dijet production measurements are also reported.

Abstract:The Tevatron experiments have recently excluded a Standard Model Higgs boson in the mass range 160 - 170 GeV at the 95% confidence level. This result is based on sophisticated analyses designed to maximize the ratio of signal and background cross-sections. In this paper we study the production of a Higgs boson of mass 160 GeV in the gg -> H -> WW -> l nu l nu channel. We choose a set of cuts like those adopted in the experimental analysis and compare kinematical distributions of the final state leptons computed in NNLO QCD to lower-order calculations and to those obtained with the event generators PYTHIA, HERWIG and MC@NLO. We also show that the distribution of the output from an Artificial Neural Network obtained with the different tools does not show significant differences. However, the final acceptance computed with PYTHIA is smaller than those obtained at NNLO and with HERWIG and MC@NLO. We also investigate the impact of the underlying event and hadronization on our results.
