Abstract:In its first year in office, the Biden administration has both inherited and adjusted the previous US policy toward China. It inherits the Trump administration's strategic position and approach to China, and strives to formulate a competitive China strategy that is more beneficial and sustainable for the US. In fighting against US containment, suppression and provocation, China has demonstrated the strategic resolve and ability to shape the bilateral relationship. At the same time, it has been striving to shape the context and process of China-US interaction through active diplomacy. Against the backdrop of ongoing China-US strategic competition, both countries are strengthening their own strategies and policies to compete for dominance in the bilateral relationship and defend their national interests. Generally, the China-US strategic competition under Donald Trump's tenure is characterized by uncertainty and conflict, while the Biden administration adopts a more predictable and manageable manner.Meanwhile, China hopes to further expand bilateral cooperation while maintaining benign competition and properly managing the divergences.

Globalization as the primary basis for Sino-American relations will truly make the rising power and the already existing big power real partners,creating a new logic for international relations.

Abstract:As US President Donald Trump initiated the investigation of China under Section 301 in March,2018,the US-Sino economic and trade ties have been featured with more strategic competitions,the result of which will greatly influence the future bilateral relations. The paper discusses the main goal of the US trade war against China,and its international and domestic political factors, and inquires into the possible prospects of the trade frictions and its influence on the future US-Sino relations. The author thinks the adjustment of US trade policy toward China derives from the US domestic concerns on the overall rise of China,the mid-term election pressure Trump faces and his scandals. If US and China cannot resume the strategic trust relations,the trade frictions may be out of control,and US and China may draw in a new cold war. To carry out effective cooperation under the framework of global governance is the practical way to avoid a Thucydides trap arising from US and China.

Abstract:Two unconnected crises in the 1970s, a crisis of profitability of global capitalism and a deep crisis of political legitimacy in China, led to creation of a formidable alliance between corporate/financial-led US capital and the Chinese state that sought to resolve both crises by opening China for corporate exploitation. The solution, however, masked different objectives. Transnational corporations moved to China in search of cheap labour to counter falling profits and Beijing sought to use foreign capital to develop the Chinese economy and gain access to technology. Over time China's interests and those of the USA diverged, as US deindustrialisation became the obverse of China's dynamic industrialisation. Factions within the US elite began to promote a different approach towards China than that of alliance and accommodation and were able to grab the upper hand during Donald Trump's presidency, advocating an aggressive approach towards China. This posture consolidated under the Biden administration. These developments set up a struggle for hegemony to which China and the USA bring differing advantages and disadvantages. While a hegemonic transition is one possible outcome of this conflict, the possibility of a hegemonic stalemate or hegemonic vacuum cannot be discounted.

Abstract:U.S. policy toward China hardened during the second Obama Administration and has become more hostile since Donald Trump took power in Washington. Four factors may be causing this drastic change: (1) the shifting of power between the two countries in favor of China; (2) increased ideological differences between them; (3) conflicting economic interests; and (4) China being seen as a scapegoat in U.S. domestic politics. While a combination of the four factors can help explain the transformation of U.S. policy, the author argues that the changing behavior of China in the recent decade has been more influential in reshaping U.S. attitudes. The China–U.S. relationship may further deteriorate in the coming years, but observers are hopeful that the two giants can avoid violent confrontation.

Abstract:In the final year of Trump’s tenure, China and the US put the trade war on hold by signing their phase-one economic and trade agreement, but the COVID-19 pandemic has brought new challenges to the China–US economic and trade relations. The US trade and economic policies toward China advocated by Trump had to be suspended due to his failure to win the re-election, demonstrating that his economic and trade strategy for China has ended in failure. However, the succeeding Biden administration has not totally abandoned the overall design of Trump’s economic and trade policies toward China, and has continued the core policies of imposing additional tariffs on China and maintaining the US economic competitive advantage. After the collision during the Trump administration, the China–US economic and trade relations still show the fundamental characteristics of complementarity and mutual benefit. Under the Biden administration, the renewal of the phase-one economic and trade agreement, the transformation of the economic alliance, the security of the supply chain, the coordination of global economic issues in the post-pandemic era, etc. will become the new focuses of China–US economic and trade relations.

Abstract:The Trump administration started a New Cold War against China. Instead of a country that can be engaged, China now is America’s primary rival in terms of ideology, geopolitics, and technology. Three factors motivated this shift: the U.S. assessment that China did not converge to the American system, China had become more assertive about its own political model, and China’s increasing ability to challenge American technological supremacy. The Biden administration will probably soften U.S. trade policy, but will continue to see China as an ideological, geopolitical, and technological rival.

In comparison,the legislative agenda of the 111th congress will sail into a cycle of protectionism. Hence,the new administration's trade policy toward China will lie both in the extent of bilateral economic disequilibrium and in the extent of conveigence of basic strategic goals and the seriousness of conflicts.

Abstract:Under conditions of financialization, finance capital develops relatively independently from the real economy of the United States. As a result, the United States has to rely heavily on external markets to buy consumer goods. The huge trade deficit of the United States stems from its own economic structure rather than external reasons. The trade deficit does not mean that the United States is in a disadvantageous position. From the perspective of the goods trade, service trade, and finance capital investment, the United States is in a position of absolute dominance with its service sector and profit from foreign investment. The launching of the USA–China trade war was a manifestation of Trump's protectionism. It has failed. It is hoped that the Biden administration will demonstrate learning from this mistake.

Abstract:The arrival of the Trump administration in the United States has sent shockwaves through the global system, triggering widespread rethinking of the current world order and its future direction. This happens at a time when China is starting to embrace a more proactive role in shaping the world order, based on its growing national strength and global influence. During the last seven decades, China has transformed itself from a 'revolutionary order-challenger' to a 'reformist order-shaper'. In the post-Cold War hybrid world order, China has gradually developed its view regarding the positive components of the world order which should be maintained, the deficient aspects of the world order to be reformed, and a vision of shared future to be promoted. Facing the challenge of the Trump era, Chinese scholars are debating future scenarios for the world order and how China could position itself and contribute to a more resilient international system. Though worst-case scenarios are considered, cautious optimism is maintained.

Abstract:The paper provides an overview of changes in the US policy stance toward China that have resulted in the currently unstable economic and trade relationship between the two countries. It reviews the trade and economic relationship between China and the US during the first year of the Trump Administration, summarizes the systematic changes in trade and external economic policies adopted by the Trump Administration in general, and particularly toward China, and observes the implementation of a hawkish trade policy that ignited dispute between the US and China. The main factors shaping the current situation are examined, including structural difficulties in the US economy, the characteristics of the Chinese institutional setting and policies that have become increasingly unacceptable to the US, the specific personal beliefs and positions of President Trump and his main aides in the economic and trade team, and short‐term factors in the US internal political arena.

Abstract:This study dispels the common view that the Trump administration has fundamentally reoriented the United States’ China policy by emphasizing strategic competition. Instead, the study argues that the Obama administration’s pivot initiative began the shift of the United States’ China policy from a defensive realist posture toward an offensive realist posture. The Biden administration’s China policy inherits the strategic competition approach. This study suggests that the competitive logic of the anarchic international system underlies all three administrations’ competition-oriented China policies. Therefore, while there are differences in the China policies of the three administrations, their commonalities and continuities are salient. Structural realism, especially offensive realism and dynamic neorealism, thus offers important insights into the future direction of Sino-US relations.

Abstract:China's trade relations with the United States over the past four decades is a topic that has not been fully dealt with in scholarly works. This paper charts the course of US-China economic relations since 1971, explains the principal forces stimulating growth and encouraging change and, finally, discusses how these two economic giants fit into an interlocking Asian and world economy. In reaction to the post-2008 financial downturn, advocates for a new world economic order have suggested a rebalancing of global demand, which will arguably become a major, politically charged issue in the US and in China in the years to come. Growing economic interdependence has quickly presented new challenges and opportunities, with issues such as human rights, Most-Favoured-Nation status, the Taiwan and Tibet question, and the huge American trade deficit threatening to cloud the relationship at times. With China's emergence as a major power and America's hegemonic ambitions tested in successive wars, the contradiction between a booming commercial relationship and conflict associated with geopolitical and ideological differences will continue to constitute a serious challenge. The long-term goal for each side will be to forge economic ties strong enough to create a stable political relationship, rather than to be held hostage by geopolitical constraints.

Abstract:The coming to power in the United States of the democratic administration of D. Biden did not lead to a change in the strategic course of the United States in relation to the PRC, which is considered as the only and main geopolitical competitor of the United States in world politics and economics. On the contrary, a number of measures have been taken in the framework of protecting the interests of US national security to significantly tighten bilateral relations, destructively link trade and economic cooperation between the two countries with the political issue of observing human rights in China and direct interference in the internal affairs of the PRC in official Washington's approach to the issue of Taiwan. The policy of active opposition to the development of China's economic potential by the Biden administration is carried out mainly due to the desire to restrain the development of advanced technologies and breakthrough innovations in China by introducing all kinds of prohibitions and restrictions in the field of technology transfer. Unlike the Republican administration of D. Trump, which focused on “trade wars” with China, President D. Biden is consistently implementing the task of counteracting Kiai through the joint efforts of the coalition of US-friendly countries, NATO and EU states being formed by the democratic administration. At the same time, the goal is also to hinder or limit as much as possible the possibilities of economic cooperation between these countries and China in the interests of maintaining the leading position of the United States in world politics and the global economy, especially in the world markets for advanced technologies. In a number of cases, the US policy of providing unilateral advantages in geopolitical competition in the modern world to a large extent contradicts the strategic national interests of the economies of the countries involved by Washington in countering China.

Abstract:Since taking office,while essentially continuing the implementation of the Trump administration's economic policy toward China,the Biden administration has actively explored new concepts and tools to better meet the reality of China-US economic relations but to serve the benefit of the United States.Though twists and turns still exist,China-US economic relations in the Biden era have been stable,without violent conflicts or out-of-control situations,like those in the late Trump era.Maintaining an overall steady development of China-US economic relations is possible for three reasons:the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic,China's pragmatic implementation of the phase-one agreement,and the structural complementarity between the two economies.However,new issues have emerged in the relations amid intensifying China-US strategic competition.China-US economic relations remain at a crossroads,affected by the changes in their political and security relations.

Abstract:The interaction between China and the US is examined since the current head of the Chinese state – Xi Jinping – came to power. The separate characteristics of the China policies adopted by the Obama, Trump and Biden administrations are examined. China's position and main concepts of foreign policy are discussed as well. The main factors of disagreements between China and the US are discussed. The geopolitical rivalry in the Indo-Pacific region and the Taiwan issue are defined as the two main reasons for the escalation of relations. The dangers of the conflict between China and the US and the necessary factors to reduce the tension are examined.

Abstract:The main directions and preliminary results of the policy of President D. Trump in the foreign economic sphere are analyzed. The reasons for and main goals of the ongoing radical reforms in US foreign economic relations are shown. China occupies a special place in US foreign economic policy. The essence of US claims against China is analyzed, and an assessment of the economic relations between these two countries is given. The author concludes that serious contradictions are inherent in the modern US foreign economic strategy. Many decisions in this area have already resulted in significant losses for American companies and consumers. It is noted that in its strategy, the Trump administration seeks to achieve not only short-term goals (for example, to reduce the foreign trade deficit) but also long-term ones: to strengthen the economic, scientific, and technical security of the United States in the wake of intensifying international competition.

Abstract:The relevance of the research subject is conditioned upon the deterioration of diplomatic ties between the United States of America and the People's Republic of China. Clarifying this issue is, in addition, crucial considering the current unstable geopolitical situation. The purpose of the study was to identify the main stages of development of economic, political and social relations between the two countries and the problematic issues faced by the respective states. Methods used in the study: historical method, statistical method, systemic method, method of analysis and synthesis, comparative method etc. The chronology of China-US diplomatic relations was clarified, and the historical events that accompanied the development of the relevant relations were considered. The author examines the impact of these relations on the state of China-US ties, including the impact of World War II, the communist regime in the People's Republic of China, etc. In addition, the study includes statistics related to the so-called “trade war” between China and the United States. The main aspects of the Taiwan issue and the position of both the US and Chinese sides on this territory are clarified. In addition, attention was paid to the US and China's response to the Ukrainian-russian war, etc. The results of the research can be used by sociologists, lawyers and historians to write essays and dissertations. The data obtained can serve as a foundation for improving and enhancing diplomatic relations between the countries examined
