Abstract:Universities,essentially the outcome of cultural accumulation,are responsible for selec-ting,criticizing and creating human culture.They are not only organizations with intense cultural at-tributes,but also important carriers of culture heritage as well as significant sources of cultural crea-tion.Along this vein,this paper first clarifies the conception of culture.Then it divides university cul-ture into spiritual culture,institutional culture and environmental culture and demonstrates the inner relationship among the three.Lastly,it discusses the significance of university culture to value pursuit and daily practices of universities.

Abstract:Chinese university's motto has two headstreams: archaism and colloquialism.The feature of motto similitude has occurred since the early stage of Chinese universities.Universities put some kinds of nationalist moral words as mottos,forming a field that is uninvolved in the global era that sparkplugs freedom,democracy and the rule of law.Mottos are seldom questioned because of their innate justness.From the social reality,the repeated production of university's motto and the copy of nationalist moral words may be a result of deep consideration.In this sense,it is the university's motto that hides the ideal and practice of university.

Abstract:A motto is the spirit of a school and reflects the ideals of the people running the school.In the last hundred years,mottoes of famous universities both at home and abroad presented a tendency of diversity in the continuous course of evolution.Despite their differences in the sources,types,characteristics and connotative meanings,mottoes of prestigious universities all incarnate different universities' personality and features.The motto has played an active role in expressing the runners' ideals,their demands on students and the faculty.A comparison of mottoes of prestigious universities shows that they have different cultural backgrounds and value orientations.Chinese universities are affected by the Confucianist educational thinking for a long time.The major contents of their mottoes come from the classical works of Confucianism.They insist on the moral duties and human relations,emphasize the inner culture and the uplifting of spiritual life,reflect our profound cultural deposits,and are influenced by humanism.In the West,religion has a binding force on morals and plays an important role in education.Many universities are even run by churches.Mottoes of many Western universities are religious,reflecting a religious spirit in their pursuit of truth and academic freedom.The study of mottoes of prestigious universities at home and abroad suggests that the development of a motto should keep a relative stability.The text of a motto cannot go through constant changes.Its connotative meanings should advance with the time.The contents of a motto should be refined and compact.The spirit of a motto should be cultivated by all the people involved.

Abstract:The length of a university history in general is closely linked to the academic tradition and quality of a given institution.The history of a university requires objective evaluation of the role and influence of many of its presidents and prominent figures,regardless of their political identities.The writing of a university history requires a truthful and critical representation of the past,so as to set oneself an example to others.The cultural heritage of the research university comprises not only its academic tradition and campus scenery,but also its character,ethos,motto,anthem,atmosphere,emblem and architecture.There is a phenomenon of "competition between two universities" in the history and culture of research universities.Despite of certain negative influence,such competition in general spurs both institutions to strive forward for a win-win situation.

Abstract:Entrepreneurial University is a kind of status of having the changing vitality, absorbing anything or everything, and facing to the needs of our society. Based on case studies of four world-class universities, we find that entrepreneurial culture is an effective fusion between scientific spirit and entrepreneurial spirit, and a re-integration of scientific culture, engineering culture and humanistic culture in the new era. In addition to the ultimate purport of spiritual heritage, entrepreneurial culture of entrepreneurial university is more particular about practical effects of university culture in building a harmonious internal and external innovation environment and promoting S&T innovation ability. Case analyses summed up five aspects of the entrepreneurial culture, including academic culture of pursuing excellence, internal/external harmonious culture of coexistence and symbiosis, service culture of people-oriented characteristics, value culture of achievement transfer, and cultural diversities. In the progress of constructing world-class universities, the Chinese universities should stick to standing on solid ground, problem orientation and humanistic care, and alert to cultural nihilism.
