Abstract:In his monograph Philosophy and the Crisis of European Man, Husserl presented a striking contrast between Greek philosophy taking a 'theo retical' attitude towards the world and Oriental philosophy taking a 'practical' one, and further inferred that there must be some sharp cleavages between the ideal images, the spiritual structures and the cultural accomplishments of Occidental and Oriental peoples' lives. 1 I have tried to show why this point of view is an 'essential insight' into the fundamental differences between the rational spirit of Western philosophy and the practical spirit of Chinese philosophy, and how the differences have brought about some noticeable distinctions between Western life as Logos and Chinese life as Tao. 2 The purpose of this essay will be to explain how the two kinds of life are endowed with distinctive vital, moral and aesthetic senses respectively by Greek and Chinese pre-Qin philosophies through their interpretations, which were given under the guidance of two different kinds of attitudes or spirits and three basis concepts - 'the true', 'the good' and 'the beautiful'.

Abstract:The"Dao"in Zhuangzi's philosophy exists both in the noumenon world and the experience world,leading to the division of Dao in the two worlds,one being"Truth of Dao",the other"Qi of Dao".The division is then introduced to his opinion on human nature,hence the division of human nature,one being"Truth of Human Nature",the other"Qi of Human Nature".Human inner conflicts result from the restrictions and struggle between the two.In Fisherman,Zhuangzi expresses his thought of"Being Natural and True"to resolve the conflict from the perspectives of noumenon and experience.It is a model of human nature,in which"Truth of Human Nature"and"Qi of Human Nature"can favorably interact with each other.Also,people living the experience world can become a True man of Dao.Ultimately,human beings return to"Dao"in terms of human nature and life,making Zhuangzi's philosophy complete.

Abstract:Abstract Chinese aesthetics mainly derives from Confucianism and Taoism. This essay attempts to revisit the main theories that run through Confucian and Taoist aesthetics in order to make them comprehensible within a broader global context. Aesthetics in Confucianism pertains to fields as various as literature, art, music and the natural environment. It holds the idea of ren 仁 (human-heartedness) as the essential attribute of beauty. In comparison, Taoist aesthetics emphasizes the centrality of tao 道 (way), which transpires through naturalness, and, as such, considers natural forms to offer the highest degree of beauty. In order to understand variations of representation and interpretation in Confucian and Taoist aesthetics, the essay discusses accordingly the three fundamentals of Chinese aesthetics: beauty, feeling of beauty, and artistic image. This comparative study will hopefully bring to light differences and similarities between two traditions, which may also resonate within the wider context of modern global aesthetics.

Abstract:The ideology about the relation between goodness and beauty for Confucius and the early Confucians is the continuation of the aesthetic tradition long before Confucius’s time, which sees more value in Yuejiao, namely, music/beauty education, than in Lijiao, Moral education. No doubt Confucius’s aesthetic idea is featured as the juxtaposition of Li and Yue, goodness and beauty. But we must not forget that Confucius, taking himself as a preserver of the sages’ tradition, personally values Yue (music/beauty) over Li (ritual/moral). It is in this context that we argue that taking the unity of beauty and goodness as a Confucian aesthetic feature is a misinterpretation of his teaching and is poles apart from the ancient Chinese aesthetic tradition and from Confucius’ aesthetics.

Abstract:Abstract: The Chinese aesthetic vein can be divided into two sections: the theory of daotifrom the pre-Qin to SIKOGN Tu of the end of Tang Dynasty, and the theory of tidao sincethe Song Dynasty, between which ZHU Xi is found. His category of gewu laid thefoundation for the transition and made the "Thing" one of the focal points of the Chineseaesthetics. His category of hanyong also laid the foundation for the basic connotation ofaesthetic epistemology and deeply revealed the life force of artistic creation and appreciation.

Abstract:Feng Qi's general epistemology is a product of interaction between modern Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy.It tries to overcome the tensions between scientism and humanism,positivism and irrationalism,traditional Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy,Marxist and non-Marxist philosophy by combining metaphysics with epistemology.Feng's doctrine of wisdom is the joint of this combination.For Feng,wisdom is knowledge and theory instead of praxis,so that his concept of wisdom excludes function of value judgment.Feng insists on the coherence theory of truth,but he verifies what the wisdom gets with the traditional method of zi zheng(intuition),which makes his theory of truth untenable.Moreover,because of the common realist position of ontology Feng fails to overcome the difficulties of his teacher Jin Yue-lin's epistemology,though he makes some modifications to it.

Abstract:In Chinese,ZHEN and ZHENLI are two different concepts with different meaning.The former means while the latter mainly something like great or correct theory.The author insists on translating truth in the Western philosophy with the concept ZHEN instead of ZHENLI for two reasons.One is that the original and literal meaning of is being true and the other that it is the common topic both for Western logicians and philosophers who understand and interpret it quite differently.Besides,one of the most important issues and concepts with which the Western philosophers are most concern is not that in the sense of great or correct theory,but that in the sense of being true.It is here that we can see the great difference between Chinese philosophy and Western Philosophy.

Abstract:This book considers the Chinese conception of beauty from a historical perspective with regard to its significant relation to human personality and human existence. It examines the etymological implications of the pictographic character mei, the totemic symbolism of beauty, the ferocious beauty of the bronzeware. Further on, it proceeds to look into the conceptual progression of beauty in such main schools of thought as Confucianism, Daoism and Chan Buddhism. Then, it goes on to illustrate through art and literature the leading principles of equilibriumharmony, spontaneous naturalness, subtle void and synthetic possibilities. It also offers a discussion of modern change and transcultural creation conducted with particular reference to the theory of the poetic state par excellence (yi jing shuo) and that of art as sedimentation (ji dian shuo). Keping Wang is a Senior Fellow of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and Emeritus Professor of CASS University. Abstract:This paper interprets the theoretical framework of the pre-Qin Taoist deep ecology from the aesthetical perspective. Its theoretical framework is based on the following: (1)Taoism follows as the ultimate norm is the core of the framework, from which we can draw the principle of eco-centric equality, that is, everything is equal. (2) Following this principle, we can deduce a set of rules for actions, which involvesno interference with nature. (3) People can identify more and more with nature through introspection and character-cultivation and eventually reach the stage of ecological self, that is, perfect carefree state in Taoism.

Abstract:Wang Fuzhi integrated the initiative,the originality,and the unity of energeticness and gentleness represented by the Qian diagram with natural law,aiming at constituting an energetic and autonomous ontology,in opposition to the void of Buddhism and Taoism.In the elaboration of the four virtues of yuan,heng,li and zhen(creation,prosperity,harmony and uprightness),Wang energetically erected the theory that the four virtues of Ren,Yi,Li and Xin(benevolence,righteousness,propriety and honesty) are virtuous,but Zhi(wisdom) is not a virtue,thus opposing such common practice of society as thinking only oneself wise,being artfully intelligent,and being in favour of wisdom instead of virtues.Wang emphasized Qian's character of being beneficial to everything in the world,and regarded it as a natural coherence of life opportunity inherent in natural law,and applied it in opposition to utilitarianism.The two aspects of Wang's interpretation on the Qian diagram embodied how Wang summed up the historical lessons drawn from the decline of the Ming Dynasty,and how he intended to rebuild an energetic and realistic Chinese culture.

Abstract:Though means love of in Greek,modern philosophy concerns more about knowledge than wisdom.It almost takes the pursuit of knowledge as its only purpose and neglects wisdom.However,both Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy have a tradition of paying attention to wisdom.For both of them,wisdom is superior to knowledge.Wisdom is speculation about the essence of knowledge and life,and the guide of praxis.Among modern Chinese philosophers,Feng Qi was the only one who reflected on the problem of wisdom.For Feng,wisdom was philosophical wisdom and the theory about xing and Dao.It was capability of virtue.That Feng defined wisdom as knowing made it lose its relevance to praxis.
