Abstract:The paper starts with explaining Mr. Yan Fu’s thesis‘The Topics of Western Philosophy are not outside of the Twelve Words of <Laozi>’,dissertates the three contribution of Yan Fu on comparative study of Chinese and western philosophies. First, Yan Fu is the first person who compares Chinese and western philosophies with the means of linguistics. By subtly discriminating‘to be’or‘is’from‘系’or‘悬’or‘玄’,he illuminated that Chinese ancient philosophers also brought forward the question that‘to be as to be’and supported their own answers. Then, he proved that it is self-evident that there was ontology in Chinese philosophy. Secondly, he profoundly treated that it is essential to make our entire nation have plain and profound spirit of science, after demonstrating that Chinese ancient philosophers were also good at syllogism of logic through a lot of reality, and exploring the reason why logic in Chinese philosophy was un-developed and the relationship between Chinese language and logic, between logic and spirit of science. Thirdly, he connected Chinese philosophy with western philosophy through comparative study of them, commented Taoism, Mohism, Confucianism and Legalism roundly, and transformed philosophy tradition in a creative way with the standing of modern philosophy. Yan Fu is not only‘the first one to introduce western culture into China in the end of Qin dynasty’,but also a real successor of the excellent tradition of Chinese philosophy.
