Abstract:This paper studies Feng Youlan’s( 冯友兰) Xin Yuan Ren( A New Treatise on the Nature of Man,《新原人》),and its characteristics. Firstly,this paper is intended to promote his theory of realm( 境界) to a form of ethics,namely realm ethics( 境界伦理学),which can stand side by side with current Western virtue ethics and normative ethics. Abstract:While existing studies on Yan Fu's evolutionary theory are from the perspective of history of social politics, this paper attempts to discuss the issue from the perspective of the history of academic thoughts. The author points out that Yan Fu has established a new moral concept of “TIANYAN LUN” that breaks through the traditional Chinese ethic. In his theory are examples of the progress from studies of the heart to studies of the mass, from human nature to evolution, from self-perfection to seeking material gains, from the theory of good or evil to theory of suffering and happiness. The author holds that Yan Fu's contribution is fundamental. He has set up the basis for the historic progress of the Chinese modern ethics.

The Influence of the German Idealists on the Contemporary New Confucians

Abstract:I use here the concept of German Idealists in a broad sense, including Kant, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel, but will restrict my examination of contemporary New Confucians only to Mou Zongsan (牟宗三 1909–1995) and Tang Junyi (唐君毅 1909–1978). The latter two are central figures of Contemporary Neo-Confucianism in twentieth century and above all they have many connections with the German Idealists in the development of their philosophy. At first sight it seems that Mou’s thought orients more on Kant than Hegel. Mou himself is an excellent Kant interpreter. His new transformation of Chinese philosophy starts from a critique of Kant, for example in his main works, Appearance and Thing-in-itself and Intellectual Intuition and Chinese Philosophy. On the contrary Tang’s seems to be more Hegelian than Kantian. But the distinction between Mou (Kant) and Tang (Hegel) lies in the following two features. In the first place Hegel and Tang evolve their systems by means of one single concept (for Hegel, Spirit, and for Tang Junyi, Mind). Secondly, their systems can be subsumed under a common theoretical model, namely monism (one is all).The question I am concerned with here is the following: How far does the thought of German Idealists influence the development of the philosophical systems of Mou and Tang? The influence of German Idealists can be divided into two perspectives: (1) the perspective of the historical interpretation of Confucianism, between Mou’s three-lineage doctrine (三系說) and Tang’s one-lineage doctrine (一系說); (2) the perspective of construction of universal philosophy or I will call it “philosophy of all philosophies.” This chapter attempts to retrace exactly the sources of German Idealism and to make clear how these sources affect their philosophical development.

Abstract:As far as "how to inherit the heritage of Chinese philosophy" is concerned, Chinese academic kingdom always slides between two extremes — nihilism and idolatry. The method of Abstract inheritance put forward by Mr.Fung Yu-Lan in 1957 tried to go out of these two extremes. Although his motive is very good, this method has no theoretical basis. In order to inherit rationally Chinese philosophical heritage, we need not only make new reflection on this problem on ontological level, but also transcend Mr. Fung Yu-Lan's method of Abstract inheritance, reconstructing basic principles of methodology.

Abstract:Comparing with the traditional moral teachings, Feng Youlan’s works Xin Shi Xun (New Treatise on the Way of Life) written in late 1930s paid more attention to immoral life teachings and how to pursue success without violating morals. It advanced a kind interpretation of traditional virtues as life teaching to young people, so that these virtues could adapt individual life in modern society, thereby ancient sage moral can transfer to modern moral life based on individuals. This problem is just how the ideal characters in traditional Chinese culture adjust themselves to adapt modern society. Like the phrase “After Virtue”, we call this effort as a pursuit of “After Sage”. The author believes that the system of Xin Shi Xun still has its significance in our epoch of social-transformation from socialist plan economy to socialist market economy.

Abstract:Based western philosophy and methodology, Yue-lin Jin developed logics, epistemology and systematic metaphysic while, in the meantime, he consciously injected the elements of Chinese philosophy and culture into his metaphysics in order to bestow him with emotional reliance and spiritual momentum. You can see this fact clearly from the title of his book, On Tao, from his employment of many traditional vocabularies of classical Chinese philosophy and from how referred to the "unity of heaven and man" as the conviction and wisdom of Chinese philosophy. Confronted with the abuse and misuse of knowledge and power by modern civilization as well as the limitless amplification of human desire, Yue-lin Jin advocated the "unity of heaven and man" as the way to resolve the conflicts within oneself, the conflicts between man and nature, and the conflicts among people, to eliminate anthropocentrism and egocentrism. He asserted to redeem the flaws of a hero's view of life with a saint's view of life, establish a harmonious life of well-being and realize the given nature of man.

Abstract:Though means love of in Greek,modern philosophy concerns more about knowledge than wisdom.It almost takes the pursuit of knowledge as its only purpose and neglects wisdom.However,both Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy have a tradition of paying attention to wisdom.For both of them,wisdom is superior to knowledge.Wisdom is speculation about the essence of knowledge and life,and the guide of praxis.Among modern Chinese philosophers,Feng Qi was the only one who reflected on the problem of wisdom.For Feng,wisdom was philosophical wisdom and the theory about xing and Dao.It was capability of virtue.That Feng defined wisdom as knowing made it lose its relevance to praxis.

Abstract:Feng Qi's general epistemology is a product of interaction between modern Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy.It tries to overcome the tensions between scientism and humanism,positivism and irrationalism,traditional Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy,Marxist and non-Marxist philosophy by combining metaphysics with epistemology.Feng's doctrine of wisdom is the joint of this combination.For Feng,wisdom is knowledge and theory instead of praxis,so that his concept of wisdom excludes function of value judgment.Feng insists on the coherence theory of truth,but he verifies what the wisdom gets with the traditional method of zi zheng(intuition),which makes his theory of truth untenable.Moreover,because of the common realist position of ontology Feng fails to overcome the difficulties of his teacher Jin Yue-lin's epistemology,though he makes some modifications to it.

Reforms to the Traditional Chinese Concepts on Fate from the Influence of Buddhism: In the Case of Li Shizheng's "Explanations on Fate"

Abstract:Before Buddhism spread into China, the most influential Chinese concept on fate is advocated by Confucianism, it is the concept of Destiny (Tian Ming, (sic)). According to the Confucianism, Destiny is the political-ethical foundation of the human society, and it also act as the only legal basis of human beings. Say in brief, Destiny determines anything for human society, and it also has a political-ethical function for blessing the good and publishing the evil. But such explanation of fate is just a ideal thought, the reality is quite different from this. Just as we have often seen, good persons always have bad rewards while bad persons may always live a good life. Such difference between Destiny and reality lead people to question about the Confucianism concept of Destiny. Meanwhile, Confucianism couldn't give a perfect explanation for this till the time. While the entrance of Buddhism did give an answer to such questions, it was no doubt a serious challenge to the traditional Chinese concept on fate. According to Buddhism, all the things come after the role of Karma, the individual reality of one's life depends on his Karma, that is to say, what one done before decided which kind of life he will live now, and what he did now can decide the life of his afterlife. What kind of life one will take only depend on his Karma, the Heaven is fair, and we just decide the life by ourselves. Such theory can give the foregoing questions some reasonable answers, and also people can feel comfortable under the Karma explanation. As the disciple of Master Fa Lin (sic) in early Tang Dynasty, Li Shizheng's "Explanations on Fate" (Tong Ming, (sic)) is just a Buddhism article that question and challenges the traditional Confucianism concept of Destiny. From which we can see clearly the problems that the Destiny concept has as well as the Buddhist solution based on karma. Buddhist solution to fate and retribution is not only the promotion for the widely spread of Buddhism in China, but also give a great shock to traditional Chinese thought, especially Confucianism. The response to the challenge of Buddhism leads to the innovation of Confucianism.

Abstract:Arthar Schopenhauer's philosophy is both old and new.It is old in form.He inherited the traditional Germen philosophy since Kant and expresses his philosophy in the traditional metaphysical frame.His Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung establishes a metaphysical system based on will that integrates ontology,epistemology,ethics and aesthetics,which seems to be an imitation of Kant's three critiques.In content his philosophy is not always new because he has absorbed some ideas of Plato,Berkeley,Leibniz and Kant.Thus,it is no wonder that some people have criticized his philosophy as some patchwork of out-dated philosophy.However,his philosophy has something new because he has brought forth the new through the old which finds expression in the following: He expands the concept of will and integrates it with life force which he uses as noumenon to establishes a new philosophy.This philosophical approach has directly or indirectly influenced Nietzsche,Bergson,Dilthey and other philosophers,and produced a philosophical movement of voluntarism/life-force that lasted for scores of years.He has also expanded the concept of perceptual intuition which helps explain noumenon(will,life force) through intuition and get rid of the dilemma of Kant's rational thinking of noumenon.

Abstract:"To attain buddhahood in the way of sudden enlightenment", "to understand the order of the Tian by meditation" and "to be a unity with Dao" are core ideas of Chinese Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism. Chinese Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism lay a common emphasis on enlightenment and meditation. The main reason is that the concepts of Buddha, Tian and Dao have something in common: They are eternal beings looked as "root of cosmos", "noumenon" and "the great whole" and have no define on their qualities, shapes, volumes and positions. The non-substantial nature of noumenon results the frangibility for common cognitional methods such as analysis, reasoning, induction and synthesis to grasp the essence of noumenon. sudden enlightenment and meditation are cognitional methods of intuition that are developed during the long term of human practice. They try to speculate the noumenon as a whole directly. These cognitional methods have their rationality but lack of strict logical analysis and scientific proof. The intuitional enlightenment and meditation are methods of cognitional surmise and it means that they are not methods of necessity but feasibility.

Abstract:If the philosophy is considered as a discipline featuring “family resemblance”, there will be two approaches for it to adapt to the “New Liberal Arts”. One is to embrace the problem-oriented and argumentbased practices widely adopted by the British and American academia of philosophy and emphasize the clarity of arguing and publicity of discourse. The other is to resort to metaphysics by focusing on Chinese wisdom. Both of the approaches require caution in handling the challenge brought by the “interface issues”, which is crucial for the “traditional philosophy to adopt to the “New Liberal Arts”.
