The Change of Chinese Aesthetics from Being Rational to Irrational——With the Pen-Debate between Li Zhi and Geng Dingxiang in Ming Dynasty as the Center

Abstract:The Chinese people lay stress on intuition and the method of imaginative mind that is more irrational, while the thought popularized by political power is rational. The irrational factor in this rational thought had been growing daily in the process of introspection under the influence of Buddhism. Till the middle and later period of Ming Dynasty, when economy was developed, daily life of food and clothe were emphasized, and the social orientation was utilitarian, the threshold of ration was broken through. Geng Dingxiang attacked Li Zhi, and led a wholesome change in value, theory of human nature, ethics and aesthetics. The Chinese thought of humanity and aesthetics has completed a historical transition from the rational to the irrational. This process is identified by the conception of self-life, which is transformed from family ties to non-family ties, the conception of equality, which is transformed from hierarchy to non-authority, the conception of humanistic private interest, which is transformed from humanistic justice to non-justice, the conception of sexual desire ontology, which is transformed from ethical ontology to non-ethical ontology, a conception of the beauty of frankness and directness, which is transformed from the beauty of mediocrity to non-mediocrity.
