Theoretically, they attach importance to "xin" and "shen". Literarily, they delineate the space of freedom again and again, which have a profound influence on Aesthetics behind zhongwangtang. This space could be thought as the basic pursuit of Chinese Aesthetics.

Abstract:The connotation of “mind” in the Jin Dynasty is mixed of three interpretations of “mind” in Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, and has profoundly affected the cultural trends, art and aesthetics in the Wei and Jin Dynasties. People of the Jin Dynasty get rid of the artistic function passed down from the Confucian system, and advocate under-standing the nature of life of human and nature directly. Fresh and simple artistic pursuit and the establishing of rules such as “getting the meaning and forgetting the external”, “using shape to write spirit”, “art belongs to Taoism”, “six rules” and so on, as well as dwelling on “imaginary place” to express “void of the body” of life and other unique aes-thetics of Jin people, is the external display of “mind”, and passes down to the Tang and Song cultures.

Abstract:Wang Yang-ming's theory and his aesthetics reformed the traditional Confucianism in the sense that it elevated the inquiry of the human mind in its original substance sense. Within the Neo-Confucianism, WANG Yang-ming converted Zhu Xi's concept of ″the reason of the heaven″(Tianli) into that of ″the internal conscience″(Liangzhi), advocating exploring the relationship between human beings and the physical world from the perspective of the substance of the human mind; ″the internal conscience″ exists in its original substance (Benti) sense prior to human mind, while the attainment of the former depends much on culture or mind self-education, i.e. effort (Gongfu). The two categories are mutually dependent and indispensable, which form a unified organic structure.To sum up, Wang Yang-ming's aesthetics emphasizes the original substance of human mind; the unity between the objective world and the perceiver, the former cannot exist without the latter; the appreciation of the beautiful things cannot be finalized without the human mind; a sense of beauty can be realized only through intuition, subjective experience and happiness of the mind; the capability of appreciating the beautiful things can only be cultivated through simultaneous practical experience and aesthetic education. This kind of approach to aesthetics does not distinguish the subject and the object, or the perceiver and the world; neither does it separate reason from experience. Unlike the Western aesthetics, it does not treat the physical world as the main object of inquiry without the involvement of the human life.Wang Yang-ming's philosophy focuses on ″the effort of the mind″. According to his theory, conscience reveals itself truly and vividly through an exploring experience of the human innate moral nature and its instinctive realization triggered by a specific situation. This ″effort of the mind″ flavours Wang Yang-ming's aesthetics with life instinct and direct sense perception: his aesthetic perspective is based on mental experience incited by a particular situation; his aesthetic approach is instinctive realization which is not absolute, not ready at hand, and with no handicap of the theory that views reason as intrinsic and constant; and finally, his aesthetic ideology eventually converts from ethical aesthetics of reasonning of Neo-Confucianism to the aesthetics of mental experience.

Abstract:Abstract: The Chinese aesthetic vein can be divided into two sections: the theory of daotifrom the pre-Qin to SIKOGN Tu of the end of Tang Dynasty, and the theory of tidao sincethe Song Dynasty, between which ZHU Xi is found. His category of gewu laid thefoundation for the transition and made the "Thing" one of the focal points of the Chineseaesthetics. Abstract:In this paper, I will show that classical Chinese artists adopted either Daoist or Chan Buddhist meditation to cultivate their mind to be in accord with the Dao, and that their view of the detached mental state as an ideal mental state for art appears to fit in with Kant's notion of aesthetic freedom. Even though it might be claimed that sensibilities are stressed over rationality in the classical Chinese artistic tradition, I suggest that the detached mental state cultivated through Daoist or Chan Buddhist meditation and experienced in artistic practice helps artists restore a balanced human nature. By projecting Schiller's account of the play drive, and the account of aesthetic freedom he developed from Kant's ideas, into the classical Chinese artistic context, I attempt to explain the balanced nature realised through artistic play by classical Chinese artists and point out the differences behind the parallels between these two approaches.

Abstract:The essence of Wang Bi's philosophy is non-being. The meaning of "non-being" makes the awakening of man possible, and furthermore, makes the awakening of literature and arts possible. Mood, as a core concept in Chinese aesthetics, has transcendence from concrete to abstract, from existence to non-existence and from finite to infinite. It also has a character of "non-being" and there must be an inner connection between them. The experience of "non-being", as part of Wang's philosophy, has inner influence on the experience of beauty.

Abstract:Disinterestedness is the symbol of modern Western aesthetics.But we find a similar theory in traditional Chinese aesthetics,which is summarized under the concept of aesthetic mind advocated by Ye Lang and others.Therefore,the modernization of Chinese aesthetics is different from its Western counterpart.The latter is a transition from heteronomous aesthetics to autonomous aesthetics,while the former is one from the autonomous to the heteronomous.However,due to the strong influence by Western modernity during the modernization processes in China,the modernization of Chinese aesthetics is quite complicated:On the one hand,we can find its development to the heteronomous,while on the other hand,its return to the autonomous.Nowadays modern Western autonomous aesthetics and its traditional Chinese counterpart are echoing each other over a long distance.A dialogue between modern Chinese heteronomous aesthetics and its post-modern Western counterpart is expected.

Abstract:This chapter studies the development and basic ideas of Chinese aesthetics by reviewing the history of aesthetic perspective from the Han Dynasty; the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties; the Tang Dynasty; the Five Dynasties; the Song and Yuan Dynasties; and the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The ancient Chinese artists pursued the artistic conception of beauty, namely, the integration of mind and objects, sentiments, and scenes, and the fusion of subjective emotions and objective landscape. Nevertheless, this conception overlooks the function of practice, the intermediary between mind and objects. Actually, there are three fundamental elements: emotion (first feeling) of aesthetic subjects; artistic conception sensed through the painting brush in practice (perception); poetry, books, songs, and paintings as artistic finished products (containing essence and sentiments). It is the combination, conformity, and harmonious co-existence of these three essentials (namely subject–practice–object) that constitute the art system aesthetics or design aesthetics.

Abstract:This essay explores the philosophical insights of Zhu Xi, Wang YangMing, Kant, and Husserl and therefore proposes a new epistemic constructivism. It demonstrates that a knowing mind is a constructor, not merely a mirror-like copier or a camera-like copier in the experience of knowing. It argues that just as different kinds of machine produce kinds of product of different qualities, different kinds of mind produce different kinds of knowledge; to know X is to construct belief and understanding of X that has truth. Therefore, while Kant correctly indicated that before we set out to know things in the world, we should inquire what the mind can know, Confucian masters profoundly suggest that in order to know things in the world and know better, we should constantly expand our mind to the extent that it is broad(博), great(大), refined(精)and profound (深)so that our mind can know millions of things in the world.

Abstract:Cai Yuanpei's valuable idea that aesthetic education can help improve human life is still of great enlightening significance nowadays. When Schiller first put forward the concept of Aesthetic Education, he mentioned the relationship between aesthetic education and human life, though indirectly. While Confucius held that aesthetic education was one of the main approaches to human achievements, Zhu Xi closely combined aesthetic education with the human development of beautiful soul and life. And Wang Yangming emphasized aesthetic education by adopting the special way of imperceptible influence. According to Wang's thought, aesthetic education, like spring rain silently moistening everything, could nurture and influence people's personality and purify their minds, ensuring their healthy development on the road of life. Though Marx did not a specific book or essay to address aesthetic education, he regarded human freedom and all-round development as the ultimate goal of realizing human emancipation and communism, which exactly formed the basis for the theory of Marxist aesthetic education. Therefore, aesthetic education is an inevitable pathway to personal improvement, growth and achievement.

Abstract:Aesthetic transcendence is a problem that the Chinese literary theory and aesthetics are facing in the 21th century.The peculiar nature of aesthetic transcendence lies in the realization of inner freedom in one's life.Cultural studies are only complement and improvement to the conception and methods of traditional literary studies,therefore can not take the place of aesthetic transcendence,but rather,takes it as its ultimate pursuit.Aesthetic transcendence is an organic unity between individuality and sociality in the sense of becoming,for which modern artistic activity like surrealism has provided a convincing evidence.The aesthetic can only transcend the reasonable,but can not transcend reason manifested in the protective forces of existence,thus realizing the organic unity between sensibility and reason through consciousness that transcends its temporary relief to itself,through individual consciousness that transcends universal consciousness,and through man's changing nature that transcends the nature of general freedom.

Abstract:Wangbi's epistemology comprises two parts: analysis between words and meaning(yanyizhibian)and experience of non-being (tiwu). The former is put forward in zhouyilveli·mingxiang, which has two paragraphs. Compared with first paragraph, second paragraph has gotten less attention. However, it has profound thought, which is the meaning is in front of image. It made important influence on Chinese Aesthetics. The latter is ultimate aim of wangbi's philosophy. There are inner connections between both, which works to our understanding about wangbi's philosophy. The experience of non-being can be thought as final horizon of Chinese philosophy and Chinese Aesthetics.

Abstract:The shackle that binds the sunstantial development of Chinese comes from the dual-contrast thinking mode on the basis of epistemology which stings to the view of duality between subject and object. The re-discussion in 1990 on Paris Manuscripts, particularly on Law of Beauty, sufficiently revealed the confinement of the above-mentioned thinking to aesthetic study. And the 1990's argument on practical aesthetics raised several constructive opinions of importance to the development of Chinese aesthetics, but retained some misunderstandings and disputable views. Therefore, the development of aesthetic study won't expect a breakthrough unless it gets rid of the restraint of the mode of epistemological dual-contrast thinking. From this perspective, we conclude that Mr. Jiang Kongyang's theory of aesthetic relationship on the basis of the theory of practice and that of creativity presents a valuable approach to attain the objective.

Abstract:When formulating the idea of "Jing-Jie," Wang Guowei had consulted with many Western intellectual resources among which the metaphysical tradition of aesthetics represented by Schopenhauer has been considered to be the main link by the Chinese scholars,but other Western resources were simply neglected.This paper,through a thorough analysis of Wang Guowei's intellectual relation with Schiller's idea of "play" and K.Groos's ideas of "make-believe" and "internal imitation," points out that modern Western psychological aesthetics was also one the important resources of Wang's conception of "Jing-Jie",thus making a new discovery into its connotations.
