Humanism in Library Education——Ernest C. Richardson' Thought on Library Education

Abstract:Ernest C. Richardson thought that it was necessary for a librarian to know both library economy and library science because of library profession's dual attributes. Richardson had criticized the situation that library economy had been paid more attention while library science was neglected by the then library schools, and advocated introducing book sciences in library education. Richardson's thought on library education aiming at learned occupation, which was a supplement and amendment to the pragmatic technical education and the knowledge system of library science centered on library economy established by Melvil Dewey, showed characteristics of the knowledge system of western classic library science and humanistic features.
