The"Paradox of Interdisciplinary":Concept Definition, Connotation Analysis and Coping Strategy

Abstract:Under the background of the transformation of modern knowledge production mode, interdisciplinary research, an internal requirement to solve the significant social problems and make breakthroughs for discipline knowledge, shows its strong vitality in knowledge production and technological innovation. However, there are many tensions between the knowledge production modes based on the single discipline and interdisciplinary structure, which brings the challenges to the interdisciplinary research. This phenomenon stems from the interdependent but contradictory relationship between two knowledge production modes, namely the "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" in this study. Exploring this complicated relationship is conducive to an in-depth understanding of the dynamic mechanism of interdisciplinary research, and the manifestation and causes of its development dilemma,which is of great significance to promote the development of interdisciplinary research.This study is carried out around the concept tool of "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" : the concept of the "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" is firstly defined with the definition of "paradox" in the field of Management. Then, from the perspective of the function of scientific knowledge production system, the causes of the "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" are analyzed. With a four-dimensional analysis framework of "institution-cognition-subjectivity—organization", the connotation of the "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" is clarified. Based on the practical challenges at different stages of interdisciplinary research, the impact of the "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" is analyzed. Finally,towards different dimensions of the "Paradox of Interdisciplinary", the coping strategies of the "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" are provided from the perspectives of institutional arrangement, cognitive element integration,multi-agent participation and organizational structure innovation, in the aim of promoting the sustainable development of interdisciplinary research mode.Based on the characteristics of interdisciplinary research, the definition of the concept of "Paradox" in the field of Management, and the analysis of the researches on the phenomenon of the "Paradox of Interdisciplinary",this study gives the definition of the "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" as following: "under the background of the coexistence of the knowledge production modes based on the single discipline and interdisciplinary structure, the persistent contradiction of the coexisting conflict elements between these two modes faced by the subjects of interdisciplinary research practice". The "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" originates from the difference in the agenda setting of scientific knowledge production between two modes, performing as the coexistence and conflict relationship between the constitution elements of two modes, which leads to the practical challenges at different stages of interdisciplinary research.Combining the systematic structure of scientific knowledge production system, this study further analyzes the connotation of "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" :（1） From the perspective of institutional arrangement of scientific knowledge production, the tension between the demand of interdisciplinary research on the flexible responsive mechanism and the traditional scientific research mode that emphasizes "legitimacy" contributes to the institutional paradox;（2） From the perspective of cognitive and technical methods adopted by subjects, the tension between the demand of the interdisciplinary research mode on transcending the border of discipline paradigms and "incommensurability" between discipline paradigms contributes to the cognitive paradox;（3） From the perspective of multiple subjects and their relationship in the process of scientific knowledge production, the tension between the demand on multi-agent participation of the interdisciplinary research mode and the single-agent governance structure of the traditional scientific research mode contributes to the subjectivity paradox;（4） From the perspective of organizational structure of scientific knowledge production, the tension between the decentralized requirement of the interdisciplinary research mode and the centralized, specialized and departmental tendencies of traditional scientific research mode contributes to the organizational paradox. The "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" in different dimensions leads to the practical challenges in different stages of interdisciplinary research. In this regard, this study further proposes the coping strategies of the "Paradox of Interdisciplinary",from the perspectives of institutional arrangement, cognitive element integration, multi-agent participation and organizational structure innovation.The "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" is an important manifestation of the transformation of scientific knowledge production mode, and its constituent elements are not isolated, but interconnected and interacted. This study pays more attention to the connotation analysis of "Paradox of Interdisciplinary" through the deconstruction of different elements. Future research can analyze the interaction mechanism between different elements. Then, with the conceptual tool of "Paradox of Interdisciplinary", future research can conduct the empirical research on the distribution and development mechanism of this phenomenon. Finally, this study proposes the coping strategies for different dimensions of "Paradox of Interdisciplinary", and future research can explore the systematic governance framework of "Paradox of Interdisciplinary".
