Abstract:Investigators interested in the study of social integration/cohesion are confronted with various confused definitions and the problem of theoretical inconsistency. Contemporary study of social integration/ cohesion treats it either as a multidimensional phenomenon or as a latent construct with multiple indicators. In this article,we argue that the study of social integration/cohesion can be divided into two research domains (empirical research and policy application) and three levels (individual,group and holistic). Based on this frame,we examine the definitions,the relevant theories,the measurements, and the applications of social integration/cohesion in different fields. Finally we point out, either for academia or for public policy circle,this concept has much application potential in the transition era of China.
