Abstract:Ionic liquids have exhibited unique selective dissolution and absorption properties and provide new ways for gas separation and purification.Immobilizing ionic liquid into polymers or porous inorganic supports generates the so-called immobilized or supported ionic liquids which possess the advantages of both the ionic liquids and the support materials.For applications in gas separation,they are characterized by continuous process,competitive or lower cost,higher sorption and disorption rate.In this paper,the research progresses in the applications of the immobilized ionic liquids including particles and membranes in the gas separation and purification are reviewed.

Recent Patents on Chemical Engineering

Abstract:Membrane distillation is an emerging membrane technology used for desalination of seawater or brackish water, solution concentration, recovery of volatile compounds from aqueous solutions and other separation and purification processes. Membrane distillation differs from other membrane technologies in that the driving force for separation is the difference in vapor pressure of volatile compound across the membrane, rather than total pressure. The main advantage of membrane distillation over the conventional thermal distillation is that membrane distillation could occur at a much lower temperature than the conventional thermal distillation. The membranes used in membrane distillation are hydrophobic, which allow water vapor to pass through but not liquid solution. The vapor pressure gradient is created by heating the feed solution and cooling/purging the condensate in the permeate side. Therefore, membrane distillation enables separation to occur below the normal boiling point of the feed solution and could utilize low-grade heat from alternative energy sources. The objective of this review is to cover the basic principles and configurations of membrane distillation process, membrane physical characteristics, heat and mass transfer characteristics, and the effect of operating conditions. Also, major applications of this new technology in desalination, food industry and environmental protection, and latest patent developments and future trend in membrane distillation are presented. Abstract:This work reviews the recent patents and progresses of novel membrane contactors used in gas/liquid separation. Compared with conventional separation facilities, membrane contactors will play more and more important role in waste treatment in the near future. The advantages in separation include wider operation range, higher separation efficiency, independent flow between liquid and gas, linear scale-up and compact structure, etc. The structure of hollow fiber membrane contactor are emphatically analyzed and typical gas/liquid separation process such as membrane adsorption, membrane distillation and membrane structured packing in waste treatment are investigated in detail. Some successful commercial products in use such as Liqui-Cel membrane contactor were introduced for example. Abstract:The membrane technologies for liquid separation include microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration reverse osmosis and electrodialysis et al. The separation performances of the membranes processes are expressed as the flux and rejection and the operation modes are divided into the concentration and the diafiltration. There are more than three hundreds of RD research organizations and engineering corporations engaging in the membranes and membrane processes in China. In this paper, the present progress status and development tendency of the membrane technologies in China have been summarized in the fields, such as the desalination of seawater and saline water, the production of drinking water, medical pure water and ultra-pure water used in semiconductor or microelectronics industry, the treatments of wastewaters from electrodeposition and electroplating, food, sanitation, medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering and metallurgical industries.

Abstract:Membrane technology is one of the most promising technologies for separation and purification that is routinely and commercially employed in aqueous solutions. In comparison, its applications in organic solvents are severely underdeveloped mainly due to the poor stability of traditional polymer membranes in organic solvents. The emerging materials such as crosslinked polymers, covalent organic frameworks, metal-organic frameworks, conjugated microporous polymers, carbon molecular sieves, and graphene provide the solutions to address this problem. The membranes constructed with these novel materials show outstanding separation performance in regard to both high selectivity and solvent permeability, greatly pushing forward utilization of membrane technology in organic media. Here, an overview of the most important organic mixtures that need to be separated, the major separation processes adopted nowadays in organic solvents, and the recent progress in new developed membranes is provided.

Abstract:At present, vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) has been paid more attention. The areas which may be applied are being expanded. The development of VMD in the recent 20 years was reviewed. The progresses on heat and mass transfer mechanism were discussed. The effects of operating conditions, including vacuum degree, membrane structure, feed temperature, velocity of feed flow and concentration of feed, on VMD and the critical operating conditions were analyzed. Finally, more profound studies on the selection of membrane parameters and the optimization of membrane module were put forward. The study of membrane fouling to establish the automatic control modules of membrane distillation process was also raised.

Abstract:The membrane technology has attracted increasing attention in the field of separation and desalination due to its high efficiency, energy saving, environmental protection, and other advantages. However, related mass transfer theories especially under confined conditions (such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration) lack the understanding of common mass transfer mechanisms and control methods, thereby seriously restricting the design and development of related membrane materials.This article reviews the research progress of separation membranes with confined mass transfer effects in recent years and analyzes the challenges faced by classical mass transfer models under confined mass transfer conditions. The confined mass transfer mechanism, influencing factors, construction methods, and types of preparation materials are summarized. Furthermore, the development of confined mass transfer separation membranes and the problems to be solved are prospected. Nanomaterial-modified membranes with confined mass transfer function are most likely to break through the trade-off effect of high flux and high selectivity. The confined mass transfer mechanism and preparation strategies of separation membranes are rarely reviewed. Hence, this review can provide guidance for new entrants and existing researchers in the field of membrane separation and has certain reference value for the development of confined mass transfer membranes in the future.

Abstract:Membrane extraction is a new separation technique combining membrane separation with liquid liquid extraction. Applications of membrane extraction are described in this paper. Its applications in extracting metals, organic substances, bio products and pharmaceuticals and in membrane extractive biodegradation reactors and enzyme membrane reactors are reviewed respectively. It is pointed out that the key to putting membrane extraction into operation lies in the development of membrane materials and the enhancement of mass transfer. It is also pointed out that the extractor based on hollow fiber is the key device for membrane extraction.

Abstract:Various industrial fields use gas-liquid separation, but due to the variety of gas-liquid separation technologies, no comprehensive review has been conducted. This paper systematically reviews the separation mechanism, application ranges, research status, and development prospects of various separation techniques. The challenges associated with each gas-liquid separation technology are presented. This review indicates that future research should focus on the droplet-droplet and droplet-gas interaction mechanisms and the formation and breakup mechanisms of liquid films. Future experimental efforts should focus on investigating gas-liquid two-phase flow fields including droplet size distribution, phase distribution, and velocity distribution. A promising development direction is to combine several gas-liquid separation technologies to expand their range of applications. An increased knowledge of the relationship between the flow field and separation performance would guide the standardized design of the gas-liquid separators.
