Abstract:Polymeric membranes have been applied in industrial gas separations for decades. Competing technologies, such as cryogenic distillation and sorption processes, require the gases to be either condensed or thermally regenerated from the sorbents. In contrast, membrane gas separation does not involve phase transition, representing the potential for a more energy efficient and eco-friendly separation process. However, the overall energy consumption by membrane gas separation is highly dependent on the quality of the membrane employed for the separation process. With the goal of reducing the energy input needed for creating the transmembrane pressure difference, numerous bulk polymers have been investigated. However, less effort has been devoted to processing polymers into ultrathin membranes and investigating their gas permeation properties, which can be quite different from their bulk counterparts. This review summarizes recent advances in fabricating ultrathin gas-selective polymeric membranes. Several classes of ultrathin polymeric membranes are highlighted: microporous polymers, facilitated transport polymeric membranes, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and Layer-by-Layer (LbL) deposited polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs), polyamides and other commercial polymers. The application of gas-selective polymeric membranes beyond gas separation is also included as a meaningful extension to this review.

Abstract:Ionic liquids have exhibited unique selective dissolution and absorption properties and provide new ways for gas separation and purification.Immobilizing ionic liquid into polymers or porous inorganic supports generates the so-called immobilized or supported ionic liquids which possess the advantages of both the ionic liquids and the support materials.For applications in gas separation,they are characterized by continuous process,competitive or lower cost,higher sorption and disorption rate.In this paper,the research progresses in the applications of the immobilized ionic liquids including particles and membranes in the gas separation and purification are reviewed.

Abstract:Bio-effects of non-thermal plasma include lethality of microorganisms and stimulation of mammalian cells,which brings up a series of techniques in disinfection and clinical medicine.In this paper,the applications of non-thermal plasma in medical device sterilization,water and air cleaning,as well as food and package treatment are reviewed.Commercialized plasma sterilizer for medical devices can be classified into vacuum and atmospheric pressure,the volume of the former is much larger while the latter is more simple and easy to operate.For disinfection of water,air and food,it is not yet commercialized due to its energy consumption,efficiency or chemical residues.In the last decade,the developed plasma sources and techniques for medicine are successfully applied to treatment of decayed tooth,skin,wound,and cancer,with some of them approved for clinical practice.In the future,the research focus will be identifying the interactions between plasmas and cells,and developing more effective and practical equipment for different applications.

Abstract:It is necessary to modify polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) before using it as separation membrane because of its excessive swelling. In this paper,modification methods of PVA are reviewed,including crosslinking, grafting,blending,hybridization and substitution;their advantages and disadvantages are listed;and some comments are given for problems in modification methods. The application of modified PVA membrane is presented in detail. The development and application of PVA pervaporation membrane with excellent hydrophilicity and PVA membrane with high conductivity and low methanol permeability for fuel cell are prospected,respectively.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent developments of the hydrophilic modification of porous polymer membranes by the low temperature plasma method,with 46 references referred.After a brief description of the plasma principle,three plasma treatment techniques,plasma surface treatment technique by some unreactive and reactive gas,such as Ar,He,O-(2),N-(2),CO-(2),(H-(2)O),NH-(3) and SO-(2),plasma deposition polymerization by saturated and unsaturated monomers,such as alkyl alcohol,alkyl amine,allyl alcohol,and allyl amine,and plasma induced graft polymerization by the alkene monomer with a polar group,are discussed applying in the membrane surface hydrophilic modification.Their effects on the chemistry structure and morphology structure of both the membrane surface and pore wall,on the degree and permanence of the hydrophilicity,and on the improvement of water flux and the protein antifouling of the modified membrane,are summarized.

Abstract:This work reviews the recent patents and progresses of novel membrane contactors used in gas/liquid separation. Compared with conventional separation facilities, membrane contactors will play more and more important role in waste treatment in the near future. The advantages in separation include wider operation range, higher separation efficiency, independent flow between liquid and gas, linear scale-up and compact structure, etc. The structure of hollow fiber membrane contactor are emphatically analyzed and typical gas/liquid separation process such as membrane adsorption, membrane distillation and membrane structured packing in waste treatment are investigated in detail. Some successful commercial products in use such as Liqui-Cel membrane contactor were introduced for example. Abstract:As a low energy consumption, simple operation and environmentally friendly separation method, membrane separation has attracted extensive attention. Therefore, researchers have designed and synthesized various types of separation membrane, such as metal organic framework (MOF), covalent organic framework (COF), polymer of intrinsic micro-porosity (PIM) and mixed matrix membranes. Some substituted polyacetylenes have distorted structures and formed micropores due to the existence of rigid main chains and substituted side groups, which can be applied to the field of membrane separation. This article mainly introduces the development and application of substituted polyacetylenes in gas separation and liquid separation based on membrane technology.

Abstract:This paper concerned the polyethylene oxide and its derivatives used in the hydrophilic modification of hydrophobic ultrafiltration membranes.The related modification methods and technologies mainly including coating,blending,surface grafting and the modification of membrane material were discussed and analyzed in detail.After the modification using polyethylene oxide or its derivatives,the contact angle of different ultrafiltration membranes reduced and the adsorption of protein on the surface of membrane decreased.All of the modified ultrafiltration membranes demonstrate the good performance on hydrophilicity and the resistance of fouling and have a promising future in application.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes have been extensively applied to scientific research and industrial process due to its outstanding properties such as high thermal stability, good chemical resistance and membrane forming properties. This article provides an overview of recent progress on the application and modification of PVDF membranes. The applications include water treatment, membrane distillation, gas separation, pollutants removal, bioethanol recovery, separator for lithium ion battery, support for preparing composite membranes, etc. Subsequently, on the basis of two major problems of PVDF membranes in applications, i.e., membrane fouling and membrane wetting, the hydrophilic modification and hydrophobic modification methods are comprehensively reviewed. Finally, the key issues associated with the modification of PVDF membranes for actual applications are discussed. This paper may provide an insight for the development of PVDF membranes in future.

Abstract:Membrane separation technology is contemporarily a high and new technology in chemical engineering. It has been consequently developed rapidly in recent 30 years due to the availability of solving many serious problems,such as energy,resources and environment. Membrane separation technology of pervaporation as a novel separation technology is typically energy-saving and cleaner-production technology. Compared to the conventional azeotropicdis-tillation and extractive distillation applied to azeotropic systems,pervaporation process could lead to an energy saving of 1/3~1/2 and decrease operating costs even no less than 50%. The industrial applications of the pervaporation dehydration over the world are introduced,and re-search progresses and industrial feasibilities of several pervaporation membranes are shown in this paper,which cover gasoline desulfurization membranes,methanol and ethanolpermselec-tive membranes,dimerthyl carbonate/methanol and arene/alkane separation membranes.
