Abstract:In this paper, we study the singular value decomposition of biquaternion matrices. We prove that the singular value decomposition of biquaternion matrices can be equivalently converted to the singular value decomposition of quaternion adjoint matrices. By means of the Cheng product, we propose a novel representation called Q -representation and design a Q structure-preserving algorithm to deal with the singular value decomposition of quaternion matrices, which makes use of high-level operations. The algorithm is more efficient than that in quaternion toolbox for matlab using quaternion arithmetics and real structure-preserving algorithm. The Q structure-preserving algorithm for singular value decomposition of biquaternion matrices is presented through the application of the Q structure-preserving algorithm for singular value decomposition of quaternion matrices. Numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of the Q structure-preserving algorithm. We apply the Q structure-preserving algorithm of quaternion singular value decomposition to improve the image denoising process.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new structure-preserving algorithm for computing the singular value decomposition of a quaternion matrix A . We first prove that the multiplication of two complex adjoint matrices will still be a complex adjoint matrix. Thus, utilizing this fact, we conduct a sequence of unitary complex adjoint matrices on a half of the elements of the complex adjoint matrix of A instead of the whole . Then, we recover the resulting matrix with the help of the special structures. This method also reveals an efficient way to preserve some specific structures implicitly. Moreover, comparing with other algorithms, the numerical experiments show that our algorithm has higher accuracy when computing the QSVD of a large scale quaternion matrix.

Abstract:The singular value decomposition (SVD) is not only a classical theory in matrix computation and analysis, but also is a powerful tool in machine learning and modern data analysis. In this tutorial we first study the basic notion of SVD and then show the central role of SVD in matrices. Using majorization theory, we consider variational principles of singular values and eigenvalues. Built on SVD and a theory of symmetric gauge functions, we discuss unitarily invariant norms, which are then used to formulate general results for matrix low rank approximation. We study the subdifferentials of unitarily invariant norms. These results would be potentially useful in many machine learning problems such as matrix completion and matrix data classification. Finally, we discuss matrix low rank approximation and its recent developments such as randomized SVD, approximate matrix multiplication, CUR decomposition, and Nystrom approximation. Randomized algorithms are important approaches to large scale SVD as well as fast matrix computations.

Abstract:A special architecture called unitary symmetric matrix which embodies orthogonal, Givens, Householder, permutation, and row (or column) symmetric matrices as its special cases, is proposed, and a precise correspondence of singular values and singular vectors between the unitary symmetric matrix and its mother matrix is derived. As an illustration of potential, it is shown that, for a class of unitary symmetric matrices, the singular value decomposition (SVD) using the mother matrix rather than the unitary symmetric matrix per se can save dramatically the CPU time and memory without loss of any numerical precision.

Abstract:In this paper,based on the ordinary singular value decomposition,a quantitative correspondence of the singular values and singular vectors between the row or column symmetric matrix (namely,the extended matrix) and its original (a.k.a mother matrix) is derived,and the perturbation analysis for the extended matrix is provided accordingly.Theoretical predictions and numerical evidences indicate that,for a class of extended matrices,the singular value decomposition using the mother matrix rather than the extended matrix per se can save dramatically the memory and alleviate considerably the computational burden without loss of any numerical precision.

Abstract:We investigate the singular value decomposition (SVD) of a rectangular matrix of functions that are analytic on an annulus that includes at least the unit circle. Such matrices occur, e.g., as matrices of transfer functions representing broadband multiple-input multiple-output systems. Our analysis is based on findings for the analytic SVD applicable to continuous time systems, and on the analytic eigenvalue decomposition. Using these, we establish two potentially overlapping cases where analyticity of the SVD factors is denied. Firstly, from a structural point of view, multiplexed systems require oversampling by the multiplexing factor in order to admit an analytic solution. Secondly, from an algebraic perspective, we state under which condition spectral zeros of any singular value require additional oversampling by a factor of two if an analytic solution is to be found. In all other cases, an analytic matrix admits an analytic SVD, whereby the singular values are unique up to a permutation, and the left- and right-singular vectors are coupled through a joint ambiguity w.r.t. an arbitrary allpass function. We demonstrate how some state-of-the-art polynomial matrix decomposition algorithms approximate this solution, motivating the need for dedicated algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, the module-algebra structures of U-q(sl(m + 1)) = H(e(i), f(i), k(i)(+/- 1))(1 <= i <= m)., on the coordinate algebra of quantum vector spaces are studied. We denote the coordinate algebra of quantum n-dimensional vector space by A(q)(n). As our main result, first, we give a complete classification of module-algebra structures of U-p(sl(m + 1)) on A(q)(3) when k(i) is an element of Aut L(A(q)(3)) as actions on A(q)(3) for i = 1,...,m and m >= 2 and with the same method, on A(q)(2), all module-algebra structures of U-q(sl(m + 1)) are characterized. Lastly, the module-algebra structures of U-q(sl(m + 1)) on A(q)(n) are obtained for any n >= 4.

Abstract:Innovative dual complex structure-preserving algorithms are introduced to develop efficient and resilient algorithms for singular value decomposition of dual quaternion matrices. Under the framework of dual complex matrices, a novel dual complex structure-preserving algorithm is introduced for dual quaternion Householder transformations and dual complex unitary matrices derived from dual quaternion unitization. This algorithm is initially proposed and subsequently applied to compute the bidiagonal form of dual quaternion matrices. Drawing on the correlation between the singular values of the dual quaternion matrix and its bidiagonal dual number matrix, the dual complex structure-preserving algorithm for dual quaternion singular value decomposition is presented. Numerical experiments are conducted to showcase the efficiency and accuracy of the newly proposed algorithms. Additionally, we leverage dual complex matrices for representing color images, utilizing the proposed algorithms for singular value decomposition of these matrices. The singular value decomposition of dual complex matrices enables the compression of color images. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, showcasing its utility in image compression tasks.

Abstract:By means of a complex representation of a commutative quaternion matrix, the singular value decomposition and the generalized inverse problems of a commutative quaternion matrix are studied, and the corresponding theorems and algorithms are given. In addition, based on the singular value decomposition and generalized inverse of a commutative quaternion matrix, the numerical experiments for solving the least squares problem and the color image watermarking problem are given. Numerical experiments illustrate the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed algorithms.

On Quaternion Higher-Order Singular Value Decomposition: Models and Analysis

Abstract:Higher-order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) is one of the most celebrated tensor decompositions that generalizes matrix SVD to higher-order tensors. It was recently extended to the quaternion domain \cite{miao2023quat} (we refer to it as L-QHOSVD in this work). However, due to the non-commutativity of quaternion multiplications, L-QHOSVD is not consistent with matrix SVD when the order of the quaternion tensor reduces to 2; moreover, theoretical guaranteed truncated L-QHOSVD was not investigated. To derive a more natural higher-order generalization of the quaternion matrix SVD, we first utilize the feature that left and right multiplications of quaternions are inconsistent to define left and right quaternion tensor unfoldings and left and right mode-k products. Then, by using these basic tools, we propose a two-sided quaternion higher-order singular value decomposition (TS-QHOSVD). TS-QHOSVD has the following two main features: 1) it computes two factor matrices at a time from SVDs of left and right unfoldings, inheriting certain parallel properties of the original HOSVD; 2) it is consistent with matrix SVD when the order of the tensor is 2. In addition, we study truncated TS-QHOSVD and establish its error bound measured by the tail energy; correspondingly, we also present truncated L-QHOSVD and its error bound. Deriving the error bounds is nontrivial, as the proofs are more complicated than their real counterparts, again due to the non-commutativity of quaternion multiplications. Finally, we illustrate the derived properties of TS-QHOSVD and its efficacy via some numerical examples.

Abstract:We propose a novel tridiagonalization approach for non-Hermitian random matrices and Hamiltonians using singular value decomposition (SVD). This technique leverages the real and non-negative nature of singular values, bypassing the complex eigenvalues typically found in non-Hermitian systems. We analyze the tridiagonal elements, namely the Lanczos coefficients and the associated Krylov (spread) complexity, appropriately defined through the SVD, across several examples including Ginibre ensembles and the non-Hermitian Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We demonstrate that in chaotic cases, the complexity exhibits a distinct peak due to the repulsion between singular values, a feature absent in integrable cases. Using our approach, we analytically compute the Krylov complexity for two-dimensional non-Hermitian random matrices within a subset of non-Hermitian symmetry classes including time-reversal, time-reversal$^{\dagger}$, chiral, and sublattice symmetry.

Abstract:The H-matrices are an important class in the matrix theory, and have many applications. Recently, this concept has been extended to higher order ?-tensors. In this paper, we establish important properties of diagonally dominant tensors and ?-tensors. Distributions of eigenvalues of nonsingular symmetric ?-tensors are given. An ?+-tensor is semi-positive, which enlarges the area of semi-positive tensor from ?-tensor to ?+-tensor. The spectral radius of Jacobi tensor of a nonsingular (resp. singular) ?-tensor is less than (resp. equal to) one. In particular, we show that a quasi-diagonally dominant tensor is a nonsingular ?-tensor if and only if all of its principal sub-tensors are nonsingular ?-tensors. An irreducible tensor Ais an ?-tensor if and only if it is quasi-diagonally dominant.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize completely the structure of Clifford semigroups of matrices over an arbitrary field. It is shown that a semigroups of matrices of finite order is a Clifford semigroup if and only if it is isomorphic to a subdirect product of some linear (0-)groups. Then we generalize this result to a semigroup of matrices of countably infinite order and give a similar necessary and sufficient condition for it to be a Clifford semigroup.
