Abstract:Ultrasonic motors(USM) have the advantages of low speed,high torque,quick response,high resolution and anti-electromagnetic interference capability,which bring them broad application prospect in fields of robots,industrial instruments and security technologies.Multi-degree-of-freedom(MDOF) motor is one of the most cutting-edge aspects in the ultrasonic motor researches.Several typical MDOF ultrasonic motors of different types were introduced.The structure,working principle and characteristics were mainly discussed.Some typical examples were given and the key achievements were summarized,as well as their applications.The research and development trends were proposed.

Abstract:Ultrasonic motor is different from traditional electromagnetic motor and it is driven by friction force. Its character of low speed, high torque, quick response and high power/mass ratio and the quality of direct drive make it suitable for the application in the aerospace field. The paper first states briefly the trait of ultrasonic motor and its application in the aerospace field, hen introduces the motor's structure, friction material, characteristic and the stepping positioning control strategy of a kind of low speed and high-torque ultrasonic motor. It is hybrid longitudinal-torsional type ultrasonic motor. The diameter of the developed sample motor is 80 mm;the maximum output torque is 13 Nm:the steady rotating speed is 12.5 r/min and the repeating positioning accuracy can reach 0. 020 degree. It also has wide working frequency range (about 7 kHz). Its start up time is about 5 ms and the turn-off time is about 2 ms.

Abstract:Based on the up to date development of the ultrasonic machining (USM) technology, applications and development trends of the ultrasonic machining tool are described. Automatic control including intelligent control and adaptive control, also tools in processing as an attachment and load matching system are trends in ultrasonic machining tool. The latest applications of ultrasonic machining technology in deep hole machining, ultrasonic elliptical vibration cutting, ultrasonic grinding, ultrasonic milling and ultrasonic combined machining are summarized, processing accuracy and processing efficiency have got a lot of progress. The development trends and future prospect of the ultrasonic machining technology are expounded. Studying the ultrasonic cutting mechanism, ultrasonic combined machining technology and micro-ultrasonic machining technology are the trends of ultrasonic machining.

Abstract:Uhrasanic motor's characteristics could change a lot in vacuum, as lacking of air. This paper described the motor's mechanical characteristics both in normal and vacuum condition with three fi'iction materials, agglomerated-PTFE, unag-glomerated-PTFE and epoxy-colophony. The max torque goes up in vacuum expect sepoxy-coiophony, and the max speed all goes down. To find the reason, this paper give the dynamic friction coefficient's experiment and finded it increasing up in convention-al, standing wave and travelling wave from normal to vacuum except sepoxy-colophony. Then, this paper tested the transient char-acteristics in vacuum, and finded the starting time and starting voltage grow up when the vacuum' degree went up to 10-2Pa. At last, this paper give the acoustic levitation force's numerical and fined it is about 1% in preload, which deserted the affect of acoustic levitation force in vacuum. The most factors which affecting the motor's mechanical characteristics are dynamic friction coefficient and the starting and run-time resistance.

Abstract:The longitudinal-torsional ultrasonic motor is characterized by low speed, high torque. However there are still many problems to be discussed in its system model. it concerned the properties of this kind of motor. The characteristics of this kind motor are studied according to the manufactured sample from the angels of theory and experiment. On the basis all kinds of factors that influenced the mechanical characteristics are analyzed , at the same time the transfer-efficiency on the contact surface is calculated, the low-efficiency of this kind motor is explained. In addition, the wide-working-frequency-range properties of this kind motor are verified by experiments.

Abstract:A longitudinal-torsional hybrid-type ultrasonic motor has larger torque and lower revolution speed compared with other kinds of ultrasonic motors. It drives devices directly and precisely, so it is adaptable to many fields, especially aeronautics and astronautics, as a servo actuator. Due to the different sound propagation speeds of longitudinal and torsional vibrations in the stator, it is difficult to match resonant frequencies of longitudinal and torsional vibrations. In this paper, a new radial-torsional vibration hybrid-type ultrasonic motor is put forward, which utilizes longitudinal vibration derived from radial vibration by the Poisson effect. The short, hollow cylindrical structure easily makes resonant frequencies of first-order radial and torsional vibrations into degeneracy. First, the new structure of the motor is presented. Second, the principle of matching the resonant frequencies is developed, and the motor geometry is optimized by ANSYS software. Finally, a 60-mm diameter prototype is fabricated, which performs well. The no-load velocity and maximum torque are 25 r/min and 5 N.m, respectively. This kind of motor is small, light, and noiseless.

Abstract:A longitudinal-torsional hybrid type ultrasonic motor offers bigger torque and lower revolution speed with respect to other kinds of ultrasonic motors , but it is difficult to adjust longitudinal and torsional phase at a particular frequency . A newly radial-torsional vibration hybrid type ultrasonic motor with hollow structure is put forward , which has one longitudinal piezoelectric ceramic element and one torsional piezoelectric ceramic element. It’s easy to make frequencies of two phases the same and take use of vibration power . The former model is improved and a Φ 60 mm prototype is fabricated . The obtained experimental results verify the basic principle of the motor. The no-load velocity and maximum torque for a typical motor are 40 r/min and 3.2N·m . This kind of motor is smaller and lighter than the former ones.

Abstract:Ultrasonic motor is difierent from traditi- onal electromagnetic motor and it is driven bv friction force.It is characterized by rapidly dynamic perfor- mance and high resolution.Based on its character,this paper introduces a precise position control metho- d.Firstly,the paper points out the essentials of high resolution and stepping characteristic of ultrasonic motor in theory and experiment.Next,based on this characteristic of the motor,the paper discusses high precise position control strategy named stepping- position control method and the factors that influence position precision are analyzed.By the stepping- position control method,high precise position control (0.010°) have been realized by the experimental hybrid transducer type ultrasonic motor,which demonstrates its potential for driving high precise mechanical system,such as MEMS.

Abstract:Ultrasonic motor is an unconventional motor driven by (notional force and high frequency vibration based on the principle of inverse piezoelectric effect. The high frequency vibration and minor amplitude between the stator and rotor have its own characteristics at friction interface, which is different from the traditional interface. The characteristics have significant effect on conversion efficiency, motor's lifetime and the choice of frictional material. This paper presented the dynamic friction coefficient in normal, standing wave and the traveling wave measured by self-manufactured experiment structure. The influences of the relative speed, preload and temperature's impact on friction coefficient between the stator and rotor were analyzed. The relationship between friction coefficient and preload was explained from friction binomial and elastoplasticity contact state of the interface. The paper also explained the effect of friction reduction in the presence of ultrasonic vibrations both from standing wave and traveling wave. The impact of temperature on friction coefficient was also tested. Finally, this paper revealed a friction model for ultrasonic motor. The friction reduction for ultrasonic motor was a foundmental work, which was useful for design, modeling and controlling of ultrasonic motor.

Abstract:Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors perform the advantages of compact design, faster reaction time, and simpler setup compared to other motion units such as pneumatic and hydraulic motors, especially its non-ferromagnetic property makes it a perfect match in MRI-compatible robotics systems compared to traditional DC motors. Hollow shaft motors address the advantages of being lightweight and comparable to solid shafts of the same diameter, low rotational inertia, high tolerance to rotational imbalance due to low weight, and tolerance to high temperature due to low specific mass. This article presents a prototype of a hollow cylindrical ultrasonic motor (HCM) to perform direct drive, eliminate mechanical non-linearity, and reduce the size and complexity of the actuator or end effector assembly. Two equivalent HCMs are presented in this work, and under 50g prepressure on the rotor, it performed 383.3333rpm rotation speed and 57.3504mNm torque output when applying 282$V_{pp}$ driving voltage.

Abstract:<p>Hundreds of piezoelectric ultrasonic motors (PUSMs) have been proposed for scientific researches and developed for commercial applications in the past decade. They are surveyed and mainly classified into three types: standing wave motor (SWM), traveling wave motor (TWM) and hybrid modes motor (HMM), according to their operating principles. These different types of PUSMs are discussed in detail, in terms of their operating principles, structures, features and performances. The methods to realize the multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DOF) motions of the PUSMs are also investigated based on the basic operating principles of the SWM, TWM and HMM. Some practical applications and representative designs of the PUSMs are introduced briefly. Finally, further efforts and research perspectives of the PUSM are summarized. This review contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the state of arts of the PUSM.</p>

Abstract:The traveling-wave type ultrasonic motor(TWUSM) is driven by the friction force between the stator and the rotator.In this paper,it briefly states the characteristics of ultrasonic motor and the applications in the aerospcace field;Then represents the structure,friction material,adhesive technology,temperature characteristics,mechanical characteristics,transient characteristics of series of TWUSM.Finally,proposes a nerve unit self-adaptive PID control algorithm to realize the precisely speed and position control of TWUSM.It is shown from the research results that TWUSM has a good performance and suitably be applicated in some space structures,such as space robot,lunar vehicle,solar panel and CCD,and so on.The priority research works are presented according to the aerospace application demands of TWUSM.
