Abstract:There are abundant lithium resources in China, and the demand for lithium salts is high. However, lithium resources of the sulfate salt lakes in Tibet, such as Baqiancuo Salt Lake, have not been effectively utilised. This study proposes a synergistic extraction system composed of LIX 54, TRPO, and surfactant ADD-1 for efficient lithium extraction from the brine and separation of impurities. The CO 2 gas stripped lithium and produced high-purity lithium bicarbonate solution. Thermal decomposition produced lithium carbonate solid from the loaded strip solution. The comprehensive yield of lithium was higher than 95%, and the quality of the lithium carbonate product reached the battery chemical grade standard. This new process offers a new way for the utilisation of lithium resources in salt lakes.

Abstract:Due to the abundant reserves and increasing demand, the extraction and separation of lithium from salt-lake brines have attracted great interest worldwide. This review aims to summarize the major developments in lithium recovery from brines, starting from an overview of lithium demand and consumption, available resources and processing methods, and challenges of processing brines, followed with the advancements in solvent extraction, ion-sieve adsorption, electrochemical approaches, and membrane technology, successively. The paper focuses on the principles, mechanisms, operations, and comparison of the various approaches. Other promising techniques, such as the modification of ion-sieves, rocking-chair batteries, and liquid-membrane electrodialysis, also are discussed in the depth of mechanisms. These processes present excellent performance in the separation of Li+/Mg2+ or Li+/Na+. Finally, insights into the directions and prospects of lithium extraction from brines are presented. It can be concluded that only by integrating the advantages of various recent technologies will it be possible to develop an efficient, low cost, environmentally sustainable, and scalable process for lithium extraction from brines.

Abstract:Extraction of lithium from brine is becoming a focus of importance worldwide. Lithium was extracted from brine by membrane electrolysis in this paper, and the influences of operating parameters on Li+ exchange capacity and stability of electrode are investigated. Various parameters including initial lithium concentration of anolyte, anode–cathode distance, electrolyte temperature, surface density of active substrate and electrolysis time are optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the electrode exhibits a remarkable Li+ exchange capacity of 38.9mg/g and the pH value of anolyte is less than 8. The results are beneficial for the extraction of lithium from brine by membrane electrolysis.

Abstract:Rapid developments in the electric industry have promoted an increasing demand for lithium resources. Lithium in salt lake brines has emerged as the main source for industrial lithium extraction, owing to its low cost and extensive reserves. The effective separation of Mg2+ and Li+ is critical to achieving high recovery efficiency and purity of the final lithium product. This paper summarizes Mg2+/Li+ separation materials and methods in the field of lithium recovery from salt lake brines. The review begins with an introduction to the global distribution and demand for lithium resources, followed by a description of the materials used in various separation techniques, including precipitation, adsorption, solvent extraction, nanofiltration membrane, electrodialysis, and electrochemical methods. A comparison, analysis, and outlook of such methods are comprehensively discussed in terms of principles, mechanisms, synthesis/operation, development, and industrial applications. We conclude with a presentation of challenges and insights into the future directions of lithium extraction from salt lake brines. A combination of the advantages of various materials is the most logical step toward developing novel methods for extracting lithium from brines with high separation selectivity, stability, low cost, and environmentally friendly characteristics.

Abstract:It is important to develop methods for efficient extraction of lithium from salt lake brine. However, the traditional lithium-extraction technology has various limitations, which make it difficult to increase its efficiency. Hence, it is highly important to explore new processes for lithium extraction. This paper systematically reviews the recent research on various coupled and tandem lithium-extraction technologies based on traditional lithium-extraction technology for extracting lithium from salt lake brine. When different technologies are coupled, their advantages aggregate, while their disadvantages become weaker, which, in turn, improves the lithium-extraction efficiency and makes the whole process simpler and environmentally friendly, with reduced energy consumption. For emerging coupling/tandem processes, the characteristics, applicability, and energy consumption of each method are analyzed based on the principle, characteristics, and performance of each technology. This review also discusses the direction that the future development of the process should take, according to the current development level of the process. Most of the discussed methods have completed laboratory-scale testing. Hence, future research should focus on pilot-scale development and optimization of the parameters and process involved. The cross-fusion and synergy of different methods provide ideas and references for better development and application of lithium-extraction processes.

Abstract:Producing battery‐grade Li2CO3 product from salt‐lake brine is a critical issue for meeting the growing demand of the lithium‐ion battery industry. Traditional procedures include Na2CO3 precipitation and multi‐stage crystallization for refining, resulting in significant lithium loss and undesired lithium product quality. Herein, we first proposed a bipolar membrane CO2 mineralization technique for directly producing battery‐grade Li2CO3 from lake brine that enriches alkali metals (Na+, K+). Results indicate the process can successfully separate Li+ from contaminants and present a selectivity above 900 for Li+ through the CO2 mineralization reaction, while prevent electro‐oxidating Cl− to Cl2 pollution. The obtained Li2CO3 production purity is above 99.75% with lithium recovery rate of 86%. Carbon dioxide was captured in the form of Li2CO3, with a capacity of 595 g of CO2 for1 kg of Li2CO3. The technology provides a sustainable and cost‐effective path for producing battery‐grade Li2CO3 from the lake brine.

Abstract:Production of lithium carbonate from brines has become the dominate trend in the world since the beginning of the century. Dangxiong Co, located in the interior of the Tibetan Plateau, China, is a carbonate-type lithium salt lake. The lake, rich in Li, B, K and other valuable elements, is of great economic value. The concentration rules of these elements and the salt crystallization paths in the brine were studied in an isothermal evaporation experiment at 25 °C. The sequence in sedimentation of the primary salts, which crystallized from the brine during evaporation experiment at 25 °C, was halite (NaCl)—trona (Na2CO3·NaHCO3·2H2O)—zabuyelite (Li2CO3)—Glaserite (3K2SO4·Na2SO4)—sylvite (KCl)—borax (Na2B4O7·10H2O). This is some different from what one may conclude with the metastable phase diagram of the quinary system Na–K–CO3–SO4–Cl–H2O at 25 °C. Lithium precipitation was a continuous process that occurred throughout the whole experiment. But, it was difficult to obtain high-grade lithium salt during the evaporation operation at 25 °C. Potash was precipitated as Glaserite and sylvite in the experiment with high grade, which made the Dangxiong Co salt lake brine suitable to produce potash. Borax was precipitated in the late stage. High-grade borax could be obtained from Dangxiong Co salt lake brine. The experiment results indicate that the lithium carbonate exploiting technology that is being used on the Zabuye salt lake could be applicable to the Dangxiong Co salt lake.

Abstract:Lithium is one of the most important raw materials for the production of glass, ceramics, nuclear materials, pharmaceuticals, and batteries. Almost 80% of total land-based lithium reserves globally are salt-lake brines. Therefore, lithium should be extracted from salt-lake brines to meet the demand of various industries for lithium resources. Several approaches for lithium extraction have been developed in the past few decades, such as precipitation, ion exchange, adsorption, solvent extraction, and electrolysis. Among these methods, precipitation is the earliest studied and utilized in industrial plants. Furthermore, it has several advantages, such as low cost, green principle, and easy industrialization. This paper reviews the precipitation technology for lithium extraction and the relative mechanism proposed in literature to identify its important parameters. Precipitant dosage, pH value, temperature, and particle size of precipitate are important factors in the process. Economic viability and green principle of various methods are discussed, and potential technologies are suggested. Novel magnesium precipitants appear to be a prospective technology for lithium extraction from brines with high Mg/Li mass ratios. Magnesium precipitation technology also shows great potential in the comprehensive utilization of lithium and magnesium resources. Various precipitation approaches for lithium extraction from brines and perspectives for further investigation are proposed.

Abstract:Based on the natural evaporation experiment conducted on approximately 460 tons of sodium sulfate subtype salt lake brine over a period of more than three years, and utilizing the unique natural energy of Tibet, a new lithium enrichment salt field process called " three times salt water-twice winter brine " has been proposed for the Laguocuo brine. On-site natural evaporation achieved high yield of lithium and a "ultra high multiple enrichment" of 134 times. Using first-principles calculations, the adsorption behavior and mechanism of Li + on the surfaces of Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O, NaCl, and KCl crystals were investigated. It was found that the migration of lithium during mineral precipitation in brine evaporation was restricted by the adsorption capacity of Li + on the surface of minerals (Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O > NaCl > KCl). The specific surface area, adsorption concentration of Li + , and surface roughness of the three crystals were tested. The results indicated that the specific surface area and roughness of the three crystals were in the following order: Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O > NaCl > KCl, which is consistent with the simulation results. These research findings provide a reference basis for the efficient lithium extraction from Tibetan sodium sulfate subtype salt lakes.

Abstract:Interests on lithium extraction from the Chinese salt-lake brines have regained momentum due to the growing demand of lithium for application in electric vehicles. Characterized by a high Mg2+/Li+ ratio (MLR), the Chinese salt-lake brine has troubled scientists and engineers for decades. Recent progress has shown significant advantages of membrane technologies. This review summarizes the membrane technologies utilized for lithium extraction, including membrane extraction (ME), nanofiltration (NF), lithium ion-sieve (LIS), electrodialysis (ED), and forward osmosis (FO). The fundamental concepts and separation mechanisms of ME and chemical exchange are introduced. Positive NF membranes, ion-selective ED membranes are discussed in detail in terms of materials design for high permselectivity. Maintaining the high selectivity and adsorption capacity are discussed for LIS membranes. Solutions to design single ion-selective separation membranes by hybrid of mobility and affinity are discussed for the urgent lithium extraction problem. Carbon neutral FO is proposed for the concentration of lithium-enriched brines with a focal on a low structure parameter substrate and a high rejection for highly saline brine. The fundamental and engineering strategies for lithium extraction from high MLR brine will be of strong interest for the harvesting of valuable metal resources from complicated brine.

Abstract:Geothermal water, salt lakes, and seawater all contain large quantities of valuable minerals such as brine and lithium. Lithium (Li), a range of non-metallic and metallic elements that are extracted from brine in various ranges, has attracted a lot of attention recently because of its rapidly increasing demand. Desalination's concentrated brine, a by-product, has a much greater amount of priceless minerals for Li extraction since it is superior to other brine sources. To meet the increased demand for Li, there has been significant progress achieved, most recently in the creation of innovative advancements that make salinity concentrate more quickly and effectively. This study's goal is to point out recent accomplishments in this sector, beginning with the relevance of Li extraction from brine and moving on to recent developments in the numerous without-evaporation approaches suggested in the written word. Regarding sustainability, economics, and likewise ideas, these technologies similarly present significant obstacles. To increase the overall effectiveness of the process, research must concentrate on hybrid technologies rather than standalone ones for the effective exploitation of desalination brines. To make these breakthrough technologies commercially feasible, techno- and socio-economic evaluations are also necessary.

Abstract:Salt lakes in northwest China have rich lithium reserves. However, because of their high Mg/Li ratios, lithium recovery is very difficult. In this work, lithium was recovered from Qarhan salt lake using counter-current extraction. The Li+ ions were extracted using tributyl phosphate (TBP) in methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) as the extractant and FeCl3 as the coextractant. The process involved four sections: extraction, washing, stripping and regeneration. The optimal conditions for each section were first determined based on equilibrium data. Then the process was conducted in a 10-stage mixer–settler with LiCl/NaCl as the washing agent, HCl/NaCl as the stripping agent, and NaOH/NaCl as the regenerating agent. The operation was stable over 14cycles. The overall recovery of lithium was higher than 98% and the Mg/Li molar ratio changed from 94.8 in salt lake brine to 0.03 in the stripping solution. The results show that solvent extraction is a highly effective method for lithium recovery from salt lake brines with high Mg/Li ratios.

Abstract:With the rapid development of industry, the demand for lithium resources is increasing. Traditional methods such as precipitation usually take 1–2 years, and depend on weather conditions. In addition, electrochemical lithium recovery (ELR) as a green chemical method has attracted a great deal of attention. Herein, we summarize the systems of electrochemical lithium extraction and the electrode materials of the Li-ion battery from brine/seawater. Some representative work on electrochemical lithium extraction is then introduced. Finally, we prospect the future opportunities and challenges of electrochemical lithium extraction. In all, this review explores electrochemical lithium extraction from brine/seawater in depth, with special attention to the systems and electrode of electrochemical lithium extraction, which could provide a useful guidance for reasonable electrochemical-lithium-extraction.
