Abstract:China is abundant in saline lithium resource, but the basic theory and key technique for the recovery of lithium from salt lake are short of substantive breakthroughs. To develop salt lake lithium resources, direct lithium extraction technique from high Mg/Li ratio brine is urgently needed. The project fulfills the outline of the national program for long-and-medium term scientific and technological development. The main research contents in detail are following:(1) Design and prepare the lithium separation materials Ion-sieve adsorbents with a high selectivity and adsorption capacity for Li+ are designed and prepared. The effect of Mg/Li ratio and other co-existing ions on lithium extracting performance is discussed. The correlation of the structure and the separation performance of these nano ion-sieve systems are investigate. (2) Synthesis quickly Li+ -identifying and chelating adsorbent materials The sensing signal response technology is utilized to design and select Li+. The effect of structural characteristic on Li+ separation ability is investigated. An optimization design of separation materials is proposed. (3) Synthesis and optimize composite Li+ adsorption materials A molecular modeling technology is developed to design for composite Li+ adsorption material. The concentration of the modified adsorbent, and optimize the process parameters are determined. (4) The key technology for large-scale preparation of adsorbent functional materials The fluid characteristics in the reactor is investigated during the synthesize process by cold model unit and CFD. Investigate the shaping process and stability during the adsorption and desorption process. (5) Develop a process for direct lithium extraction technique from brine and build a demonstration facility The optimized adsorption-desorption process and parameters are determined. A new LiCl separation technology process is developed. A device with a 100 t annual output and demonstration running is built. (6) Study the key technique of Li2CO3 refinement The key technology of impurity removal and lithium enrich for various brine composition is developed. A Li2CO3 refinement technology is developed to form a packaged technology of high-purity and battery grade Li2CO3 preparation.

Abstract:Due to the abundant reserves and increasing demand, the extraction and separation of lithium from salt-lake brines have attracted great interest worldwide. This review aims to summarize the major developments in lithium recovery from brines, starting from an overview of lithium demand and consumption, available resources and processing methods, and challenges of processing brines, followed with the advancements in solvent extraction, ion-sieve adsorption, electrochemical approaches, and membrane technology, successively. The paper focuses on the principles, mechanisms, operations, and comparison of the various approaches. Other promising techniques, such as the modification of ion-sieves, rocking-chair batteries, and liquid-membrane electrodialysis, also are discussed in the depth of mechanisms. These processes present excellent performance in the separation of Li+/Mg2+ or Li+/Na+. Finally, insights into the directions and prospects of lithium extraction from brines are presented. It can be concluded that only by integrating the advantages of various recent technologies will it be possible to develop an efficient, low cost, environmentally sustainable, and scalable process for lithium extraction from brines.

Abstract:Rapid developments in the electric industry have promoted an increasing demand for lithium resources. Lithium in salt lake brines has emerged as the main source for industrial lithium extraction, owing to its low cost and extensive reserves. The effective separation of Mg2+ and Li+ is critical to achieving high recovery efficiency and purity of the final lithium product. This paper summarizes Mg2+/Li+ separation materials and methods in the field of lithium recovery from salt lake brines. The review begins with an introduction to the global distribution and demand for lithium resources, followed by a description of the materials used in various separation techniques, including precipitation, adsorption, solvent extraction, nanofiltration membrane, electrodialysis, and electrochemical methods. A comparison, analysis, and outlook of such methods are comprehensively discussed in terms of principles, mechanisms, synthesis/operation, development, and industrial applications. We conclude with a presentation of challenges and insights into the future directions of lithium extraction from salt lake brines. A combination of the advantages of various materials is the most logical step toward developing novel methods for extracting lithium from brines with high separation selectivity, stability, low cost, and environmentally friendly characteristics.

Abstract:Lithium is one of the most important raw materials for the production of glass, ceramics, nuclear materials, pharmaceuticals, and batteries. Almost 80% of total land-based lithium reserves globally are salt-lake brines. Therefore, lithium should be extracted from salt-lake brines to meet the demand of various industries for lithium resources. Several approaches for lithium extraction have been developed in the past few decades, such as precipitation, ion exchange, adsorption, solvent extraction, and electrolysis. Among these methods, precipitation is the earliest studied and utilized in industrial plants. Furthermore, it has several advantages, such as low cost, green principle, and easy industrialization. This paper reviews the precipitation technology for lithium extraction and the relative mechanism proposed in literature to identify its important parameters. Precipitant dosage, pH value, temperature, and particle size of precipitate are important factors in the process. Economic viability and green principle of various methods are discussed, and potential technologies are suggested. Novel magnesium precipitants appear to be a prospective technology for lithium extraction from brines with high Mg/Li mass ratios. Magnesium precipitation technology also shows great potential in the comprehensive utilization of lithium and magnesium resources. Various precipitation approaches for lithium extraction from brines and perspectives for further investigation are proposed.

Abstract:The importance of lithium resources has gradually increased with the research and promotion of lithium batteries. Lithium extraction from salt lake has become a major trend due to the abundance of lithium resources. However, there are plenty of interfering ions in the brine, especially magnesium ions containing concentration ratios of several to tens, which are difficult to separate due to the similar radius of hydrated ions. And membrane method has the advantages of being environmentally friendly, simple, and good separation effect, which is an important research direction for lithium extraction from salt lake. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of several common membrane-based methods for lithium separation, especially focusing on pressure-driven and electric-driven methods, and a comprehensive assessment of advantages and disadvantages between the different methods in terms of lithium extraction efficiency, durability, energy consumption, environmental friendliness, and technological maturity. The shortcomings of them are also presented, for example, current processes are still limited by membrane lifetime, device cost, separation efficiency, and the processes are not mature enough to achieve a complete process from source to product. Therefore, the future directions are focused on membrane materials, membrane antifouling performance, process development, and process integrity testing.

Abstract:It is important to develop methods for efficient extraction of lithium from salt lake brine. However, the traditional lithium-extraction technology has various limitations, which make it difficult to increase its efficiency. Hence, it is highly important to explore new processes for lithium extraction. This paper systematically reviews the recent research on various coupled and tandem lithium-extraction technologies based on traditional lithium-extraction technology for extracting lithium from salt lake brine. When different technologies are coupled, their advantages aggregate, while their disadvantages become weaker, which, in turn, improves the lithium-extraction efficiency and makes the whole process simpler and environmentally friendly, with reduced energy consumption. For emerging coupling/tandem processes, the characteristics, applicability, and energy consumption of each method are analyzed based on the principle, characteristics, and performance of each technology. This review also discusses the direction that the future development of the process should take, according to the current development level of the process. Most of the discussed methods have completed laboratory-scale testing. Hence, future research should focus on pilot-scale development and optimization of the parameters and process involved. The cross-fusion and synergy of different methods provide ideas and references for better development and application of lithium-extraction processes.

Abstract:Salt lake brines have become the main source of lithium owing to their abundant reserves and low extraction costs. The low absolute concentration of Li+ and the complexity of accompanying ions in the brines are crucial issues, thereby inspiring the development of a variety of lithium extraction technologies. Among them, electrodialysis (ED) enables acceptable separation performance, reduced energy consumption, and near-zero pollution toward salt lake brines with a high Mg2+/Li+ mass ratio. Most recently, the rapid advancement of integrated ED technologies and emerging strategies for membrane material fabrications are conducive to facilitating the implementation of this technology. The newly proposed processes can achieve higher energy utilization and enhance the concentration of lithium salt products. For membrane materials, the superior permselectivity between lithium and magnesium is still the current pursuit. The key metrics for developing membranes involve tuning the materials’ hydrophilicity, pore size, and charge. Among them, due to the rise of lithium-specific recognition materials, it is believed that coupling them with ED technology to achieve efficient and precise extraction of lithium will be the future development direction.

Abstract:Lithium is becoming one of the most eye-catching metal elements in modern industry, mainly because of its crucial role in manufacturing lithium-ion batteries. The demand for lithium in the new energy market is burgeoning significantly, while enormous lithium resources reserved in salt lakes in northwest China are not exploited effectively, due to the high Mg/Li mass ratio. Although the TBP extraction system has been applied in lithium extraction from salt lake brines, there are still some problems to be solved, such as its high solubility, easy degradation, and so on. In this work, a novel low dissolution loss extraction system was developed, with DEHEHP and FeCl 3 serving as extractant and co-extractant, respectively. A real brine from Da Qaidam Lake was used to prove its practicality and effectiveness. After studying the detailed conditions of each process, a whole countercurrent process was performed, including eight stages of extraction, two stages of scrubbing, three stages of stripping, and regeneration. It was found that 99.4% of Li + was successfully recovered from the brine, and the stripping liquor contained 22.74 g/L Li + , 0.51 g/L Mg 2+ , and 3.16 g/L B. The concentration of Li + increased approximately 20-fold while the Mg/Li mass ratio decreased by a factor of 3900, from real brine to stripping liquor. High-purity (>98.5%) lithium carbonate products were prepared from the stripping liquor by precipitation. The dissolution loss of the organic phase in the raffinate was only 22.5 ppm, much lower than published works. Finally, the mechanism of extraction and co-extraction were systematically studied and the structure of the complex formed during extraction was revealed as LiFeCl 4 ·2DEHEHP.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, the demand for lithium resources has increased significantly with the rapid development and extensive application of lithium-ion batteries. Extracting lithium from salt lake brine is of significance because of its abundance in brines. Numerous endeavours have addressed the challenges of magnesium/lithium separation from salt lake brines having high Mg/Li ratios with the aim of efficiently and sustainably recovering lithium resources. This review focuses on the latest advances in magnesium/lithium separation and lithium recovery from salt lake brines, including extraction, adsorption, membrane, and electrochemical methods as well as reaction-coupled separation technology. The features and adaptabilities of various methods are analysed from the viewpoint of the chemical structures of related materials, reaction mechanisms, properties, and applications. Among the available techniques, adsorption methods have great potential to be widely used. However, membrane methods have attracted attention owing to their low energy consumption and high separation rates; the advantages and limitations of nanofiltration, electrodialysis, bipolar membranes, and membrane capacitive deionisation are therefore summarised in this review. As representative electrochemical methods, the lithium ion capturing system and the rocking-chair battery system are reviewed, and the roles of various electrode materials in lithium recovery are analysed. Recently, reaction-coupled separation technology has emerged as an advantageous method for magnesium/lithium separation and lithium extraction. The ability of this technology to realise highly efficient magnesium/lithium separation while simultaneously preparing high-value magnesium-based functional materials from magnesium resources is discussed. The development of such methods that can comprehensively utilise the magnesium and lithium resources in salt lake brine is essential for resource sustainability.

Abstract:Extraction of lithium from brine is becoming a focus of importance worldwide. Lithium was extracted from brine by membrane electrolysis in this paper, and the influences of operating parameters on Li+ exchange capacity and stability of electrode are investigated. Various parameters including initial lithium concentration of anolyte, anode–cathode distance, electrolyte temperature, surface density of active substrate and electrolysis time are optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the electrode exhibits a remarkable Li+ exchange capacity of 38.9mg/g and the pH value of anolyte is less than 8. The results are beneficial for the extraction of lithium from brine by membrane electrolysis.

Abstract:The method of extraction of lithium in the brine a salt lake, comprising the steps of: 1) preparing the organic phase is extracted: the organic phase was extracted and diluents include mixed extractant, wherein the extractant composite tributyl phosphate and N, N- bis (2-ethanesulfonic ethylhexyl) -3-butanone acetamide by volume of 50% is: 50% mixed, sulfonated kerosene diluent; 2) extraction of the aqueous phase: as LiCl-MgCl2-H2O system; 3) extraction of the aqueous phase to adding HCl, FeCl3 · 6H2O, wherein the control amount ratio of iron material, lithium is 1.3: 1, acid concentration of 0.5mol / L, the lithium concentration is 1 ~ 3g / L; 4) in step 3) to give the organic phase was extracted by volume aqueous phase was extracted in step 1) was obtained as a 1: 2 was allowed to stand and phase separate after thorough mixing. The present invention improves the high concentrations of tributyl phosphate extraction apparatus corrosive strong and long-term operation in the extraction agent dissolved in water, not only in loss of serious problems, and to achieve the efficiency of the prior art extraction of lithium. Extraction process is simple and reliable operation.

Abstract:There are considerable reserves of low-grade solid potash resources in the shallow part of Mahai Salt Lake in the Qaidam Basin, and the lithium brine resources resulting from solid–liquid conversion and mining are quite abundant. The comprehensive utilization of these resources is an important and urgent problem. In this study, to fully utilize these resources, the shallow low-grade solid potash ore in Mahai Salt Lake was used for systematic simulated ore dissolution experiments, combined with geochemical and X-ray diffraction analyses. The following key results were obtained: (1) Most Li+ in the Mahai mining area was deposited on the soluble salt minerals in silt or clay, and the appropriate concentration of solvent can help to dissolve more Li+ and K+; (2) the saturation time of Li+ was longer than that of K+. Therefore, the dissolution time for the mine can be appropriately extended during the production process to dissolve more Li+; (3) the solid–liquid conversion aqueous solution mining method can separate the lithium part of clay deposits and is associated with salt rock in the brine, which is a potential lithium resource. These experimental results provide a theoretical basis for salt pan production.

Abstract:Driven by technology advancement and wide application of lithium, the market demand for lithium is skyrocketing. To enable the sustainable supply of lithium, it is strongly desirable to extract lithium from various resources, especially salt lake brine with 60 % of global lithium content. Recently, adsorption has served as a critical procedure for selective lithium extraction from brines, in particular those with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios. Herein, a comprehensive review of lithium adsorbents from nano structural and compositional effects to industrial applications is performed. Firstly, lithium adsorbents are fully summarized, involving the common types, structure-performance relationships, lithium intercalation and deintercalation mechanisms at the ionic level, and current limitations of various adsorbents. Based on these summaries, a performance heatmap is created to visualize the performance of lithium adsorbents. To serve the industrial demands, the shaping techniques and factors influencing extraction properties are then discussed. Further, the industrial cases of different lithium adsorbents and universal strategies of lithium extraction from brines to Li 2 CO 3 products using adsorbents are demonstrated, providing technical references for industrial applications. Finally, recommendations and perspectives on larger-scale development of lithium adsorbents are proposed. Overall, this review not only offers in-depth insight into lithium extraction from brines with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios, but also inspires the development and design of next-generation lithium adsorbents with unprecedented properties.
