Abstract:Ozone is a new bacterial control material.It is a strong oxidizer,it can release extra oxygen molecular in water so that hydrogen dioxide results in hydrogen peroxide which can destroy and penetrate of cell membrane to kill pathogens.Ozone can be used in killing bacteria and fungi.In recent years,Ozone has been widely used in fish industry.The main use of ozone,including Sterilization,the oxygen content enrichment,oxidation,decomposition of ammonia,Oxidation of toxic substances in water,bait feed culturing,ice storage of fresh fish and so on.This article describes the nature of the ozone and its application in the fish industry,in the preservation of fish products,shellfish purification,aquaculture,fish breeding and aquaculture industries.The summarized application is to provide information for the development and application of ozone.

Abstract:The mechanism,research progress and application of ozone oxidation technologies in air purification,solid disposal and wastewater treatment are reviewed.The combination of ozone oxidation and other technologies including BAC,O3/H2O2,O3/UV are introduced.Compared with traditional oxidants,ozone oxidation not only avoid chlorinated organic compounds,but also improve the speed of filtration,reduce number of filter tanks,promote flocculation and reduce number of flocculation tanks and flocculants dosage,extend the filter tank usage time,reduce rinse water consumption and improve the water quality.

Abstract:Ozone was an excellent disinfectant and had been applied in water disinfection for a century.It could inactivate microorganisms such as protozoa efficiently,which were very resistant to conventional disinfectants due to its high oxidation efficiency.The mechanisms of the combined technologies of O3,UV,H2O2 and TiO2 as well as its application in water treatment are investigated.The developmental direction of ozonation technique in the future is also presented at the end.

Abstract:Organic pollution is a significant challenge in environmental protection, especially the discharge of refractory organic pollutants in chemical production and domestic use. The biological treatment method of traditional sewage treatment plants cannot degrade such pollutants, which leads to the continuous transfer of these pollutants into the water environment. Therefore, it is necessary to study clean and efficient advanced treatment technologies to degrade organic pollutants. The ozone/UV advanced oxidation process (O3/UV) has attracted extensive attention. This paper summarizes the reaction mechanism of O3/UV and analyzes its application progress in industrial wastewater, trace polluted organic matter and drinking water. The existing research results show that this technology has an excellent performance in the degradation of organic pollutants and has the characteristics of clean and environmental protection. In addition, the control of bromate formation and its economy is evaluated, and its operating characteristics and current application scope are summarized, which has a practical reference value for the follow-up in-depth study of the O3/UV process.

Abstract:A review about lake naturally eutrophicating, the internal loading of nutrients from lake sediment as well as the mechanism of algal blooms and the control practices was made, especially the eutrophication problem of shallow lakes since seventy percent of fresh water lakes in China are shallow lakes. It was found that shallow lakes are apt toward eutrophication than deep lakes. Without any influences of human activity, shallow lakes in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River are still easily eutrophicated, which may be owing to the effects of flood in this area. In shallow lakes, sediments are frequently disturbed by wind-wave and resuspended, which result in huge nutrients release to overlying water. This may be the major reason for higher internal loading of nutrients in shallow lakes than in deep lakes. Algal bloom is an extreme response of lake ecosystem to the eutrophication. Appearance of algal blooms is related to physical condition of lakes, such as underwater radiation (or transparency), temperature, and hydrodynamic conditions, or related to geochemical conditions of lakes, like concentrations of nutrients and ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus, as well as the physiological advantage of cyanobacteria such as vacuole for moving towards the radiant energy-rich zone and the mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) for resisting the harm of ultraviolet radiation. In shallow lakes, these advantages of cyanobacteria are favorable in the competition than in deep lakes. Also being the shallowness, it is more difficult to reduce nutrient loading and to control algae blooms in shallow lakes. For the control of eutrophication, people should follow the sequence from pollution sources control, ecological restoration to catchment management. To control the internal nutrient release, physical, chemical, biological techniques, and even bionic techniques could be selected. The idea of ecological restoration for a eutrophic lake is to shift the ecosystem from phytoplankton-dominant state to macrophyte-dominant state. To realize the shift of ecosystem state, environmental condition improvement is the fundamental work. Nowadays, we should do more work on environmental condition improvement than on planting of macrophytes since we are lack of the knowledge about the relationship between macrophyte and lake ecosystem. Emphasizing the macrophyte planting, therefore, has blindness at present. Because all lakes have different characteristics of environment and ecosystem, applicable lake harness techniques should be selected based on the distinct ecosystem types and environmental problems.

Abstract:In situ algae control technologies recently developed for water source areas of lakes and reservoirs were reviewed,including the ecological floating island technique,algae control technologies using modified clay,plant extract, fish species and light shielding,lift barrel technologies and combined technologies such as physical-ecological engineering.It is suggested that combining technologies to accomplish water quality restoration and disaster prevention and control would be one of the most important directions for further research.

Abstract:Fish is a vital source of animal proteins for food and feed. However, large-scale aquaculture generates a large amount of wastewater and causes environmental water pollution. Microalgae biotechnology as a promising way to treat wastewaters has been extensively studied in the past decades. This chapter discusses progress in the development and application of microalgae biotechnology for aquaculture water quality control and bioenergy production. The benefits and mechanisms of microalgae in water quality control and key factors affecting microalgal growth and aquaculture water quality are reviewed. Moreover, the challenges of microalgae-based aquaculture wastewater treatment in the large-scale application, including inadequate treatment, costly microalgae harvesting, and lack of technical and environmental evaluation studies, are discussed. Finally, some potential strategies and suggestions for future research are proposed. It is expected that this chapter will provide important references for the application of microalgae biotechnology in aquaculture and promote the sustainable development of environmentally friendly aquaculture.
In-situ algal control by two-stage nanobubble technology in Taihu Lake: Efficacy and ecological impact

Abstract:Hydrodynamic cavitation and ozone nanobubble-coupled hydrodynamic cavitation have demonstrated effective algae control in laboratories, but their in-situ potential, especially impact on nutrient salt degradation and microbial communities remain unclear. This study applied two-stage nanobubble technology, combining hydrodynamic cavitation and ozone nanobubbles, in a 3300 m2 semi-enclosed area of Taihu Lake to address these gaps. Results show that the technology efficiently controls algae, reduces odors, improves anaerobic conditions, and lowers ammonia nitrogen. Over 20 days, chlorophyll-a concentration reduced by 77.46% and cyanobacterial phycocyanin by 89.47%. Additionally, the concentrations of 2-MIB, GSM, and DMTS fell below threshold values. Notably, the relative abundance of Cyanobacteria in sediment dropped from 8.53% in the control area to only 1.59%-3.65% in the experimental area. The technology also achieved a significant reduction in ammonia nitrogen, with removal efficiencies of 78.53% in the water column and 39.17% in sediments, though the removal of total phosphorus was limited. Furthermore, the two-stage nanobubble system enhanced the abundance of nitrogen-cycling microorganisms and genes in the water, while promoting nitrogen- and phosphorus-related microbial communities in sediments and inhibiting the cyanobacteria-associated genus Cyanobium PCC-6307. Thus, Two-stage nanobubble technology can be employed for in-situ algal control in aquatic ecosystems.
Preozonation/Conventional Technology/Ultrafiltration Process for Purification of Taihu Lake Water

Abstract:Eutrophication leads to a lot of problems in drinking water treatment.In order to provide a reference for upgrading waterworks,a pilot study on treatment of Taihu Lake water using the combined process of preozonation,conventional technology and ultrafiltration was carried out,and the ultrafiltration membrane fouling was analyzed.The results showed that the average turbidity,CODMn,UV254 and DOC in the treated water by the combined process were 0.09 NTU,2.23 mg/L,0.039 cm-1 and 2.90 mg/L,and the total removal rates were 97.25%,34.41%,40.48% and 28.55% respectively.The average particles larger than 2 μm in the membrane effluent were 16 p/mL,and neither bacteria nor E.coli was detected.In addition,the combined process could effectively remove iron,manganese and algae in water,and the contents in the treated water were lower than the standard limits.Compared with direct ultrafiltration of raw water,the TMP of the combined process was increased more stably.Therefore,the combined process can be used for micro-polluted lake water treatment.

Abstract:Through investigation and comparison of the methods of water purification, salvage and aeration were confirmed to be the most effective methods in treating the pollution in Lake Taihu. A solar water purification system was designed to achieve the effects of salvage and aeration. To collect algae as “salvage,” this purification system employed a combination of a water pump and filter screen. To increase the dissolved oxygen, the water pump lifted water and sprayed it into the air, and an air pump was equipped to inject oxygen bubbles into the water. After a one-year test at Lake Taihu, the effectiveness of this purification system was confirmed. It could effectively lower the levels of permanganate, NH3 4 NH+ / , and chlorophyll a and increase the level of dissolved oxygen in the lake water.

Abstract:Abstract With the continuous development of the economy, environmental pollution has become more and more serious, especially water pollution. During and after the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”, China’s environmental protection and ecological construction and restoration work will be fully carried out. Among them, water pollution control, air pollution, solid waste pollution, heavy metal pollution, radioactive pollution control, and desertified land control are environmental protection and ecological, one of the very important contents of environmental construction. The purpose of this article is to study the application of lake and wetland ecological restoration technology in environmental pollution control and ecological restoration. Commonly used domestic lake pollution treatment methods include: microbial method, dredging and salvage, chemical sedimentation (flocculation), physical measures (filtration and membrane), constructed wetland, reoxygenation (micropores, turbulent aeration), mechanical dilution transfer (flushing) Water, water change) etc. The microbiological method is to put in microorganisms, the use of microbial preparations can digest and degrade organic pollutants and remove the purification mechanism of ammonia nitrogen and phosphorus, so as to achieve the goal of various water pollution control. And its disadvantage is that it can’t last forever. Ecosystem restoration project: It is the process of using engineering technology to assist the restoration of an ecosystem that has been degraded, destroyed, newly built or rebuilt. Its application enables the ecosystem to be restored and strengthened in terms of its own health, integrity and sustainability. Once the ecological restoration project is completed, the ecosystem does not need to be maintained by humans, as long as it is prevented from degrading due to disturbance. This is similar to the microbiological method in the lake and wetland ecological restoration technology.

Abstract:In view of the characteristics of low-temperature and low-turbidity water in cold area,the low-temperature and low-turbidity water treatment with O3-BAC at home and abroad was investigated.By hunting for the mechanism and efficiency evaluation of removal of natural organic,DBPs,ammonia-nitrogen and metallic ions by ozone/BAC,it can be concluded that O3-BAC is a guaranteeing technique for drinking water achieved from low-temperature and low-turbidity water in cold area.
Water Quality Safety of Ozonation and Biologically Activated Carbon Process in Application

Abstract:Ozonation and biologically activated carbon process, one of advanced treatment technologies, has been applied in many places at home and abroad. However, some emerging water quality problems appeared in operation. Drinking water treatment plant (6 x 10(5) m3/d) with ozonation and biologically activated carbon process (O3-BAC process) was investigated systematically, including microbial safety, the excessive growth of aquatic microorganism and chemical stability of water quality. And some experiments were done in the pilot plant (10 m3/h) at the same time. O3-BAC process is reliable in microbial safety, but operation management should be enhanced. A good number of aquatic microorganisms grow immoderately during operation of O3-BAC process, which is more serious especially in place with high temperature and humidity. With prolong of runtime, the growth of aquatic microorganisms varies regularly. That is hazardous to water quality safety. When raw water is low with alkalinity, decrease of pH in O3-BAC process is obvious. That will seriously affect on chemical stability.

Abstract:Advanced water treatment technologies, including ozone biologically activated carbon adsorption (O3-BAC), ultrafiltration (UF), and nanofiltration (NF), are essential for enhancing drinking water quality. O3-BAC and UF excel in pathogen, virus, and by-product removal, while NF promises enhanced contaminant elimination for high-quality water. However, the implementation of combined UF/NF dual-membrane treatment processes in large-scale water treatment facilities using surface water sources like lakes remains relatively novel. The lack of long-term operational data is the main reason for the limited widespread adoption. To address this, two pilot systems were established: one comprising 'O3-BAC + pressure-driven UF(I) + NF(I) (Route 1 at 6.4m3/h)', and the other 'immersed UF(II) + NF(II) (Route 2 at 3.2m3/h)', undergoing a year-long evaluation. The trials showed that the dual-membrane systems were effective and resistant to interference. Notably, they achieved removal efficiencies exceeding 98 % for turbidity, UV254 absorbance, fluorescence substances, and algae, alongside significant reductions in odor (80 %) and total dissolved solids (TDS) by 30 %. Both membrane systems display promising performance and O3-BAC is recommended as a pretreatment process. Analysis revealed that the primary constituents of membrane fouling on the NF membranes are aluminum silicate, SiO2, CaCO3 particles, and organic pollutants, which are typically formed through interactions between calcium ions and dissolved organic matter (DOM). The most effective cleaning protocol involves acidic-alkaline treatments. This study provides valuable operational insights into advanced treatment processes using dual-membrane combinations for water treatment plants that rely on lake water sources.
