Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the precision of a intraoral digital scanner by investigating its repeatability from mul-tiple scanning. Methods:Five types of designated dental study models based on prepared abutments were used in this study as follows:1) single prepared right maxillary central incisor;2) single prepared right maxillary first molar;3) prepared right maxillary incisor and canine with right lateral incisor absent;4) 7 prepared teeth on the right upper quadrant;5) 14 prepared teeth on the upper arch. In the experimental group, each dental study model was scanned using a TRIOS intraoral digital scanner 10 times;in the control group, 10 duplicates were made from each dental study model, and scanned by using a 3Shape extraoral scanner. A total of 100 STL files were obtained. The data were processed and analyzed using Geomagic Studio 12 software. Results:3D standard deviations of experimental group (intraoral scan group) were:1) 13.33μm;2) 7.0μm;3) 16.33μm;4) 41.56μm and 5) 88.44μm. 3D standard deviations of control group (extraoral scan group) were:1) 14.89μm;2) 8.67μm;3) 24.33;4) 14.22μm and 5) 12.67μm. there were significant differences in 3D standard deviations between ex-perimental and control groups on Model 2, 3, 4 and 5 (P<0.05). Conclusion:Precision of intraoral digital impression scan-ning is clinically acceptable when the scanning scope is less than half arch, but it decreases as the scanning scope increases. Precision of extraoral scanning was acceptable when scanning any scope of arch region.
