Abstract:The prediction and evaluation of the change characteristics of non-homogeneous debris flow are an important content of debris flow control project planning and early warning and forecasting system construction. They are also a key issue that needs to be improved in the field of debris flow. By sorting out and analyzing the measured data of the mud level and velocity of the debris flow, a prediction model of the characteristic value of the non-homogeneous debris flow movement is constructed. Based on the previous results, the model can distinguish the change characteristics of the debris flow movement in the study area with fewer factors. Taking the mud-rock flow in Xiahuyang Gully, Lixian County, Longnan area as an example, the FLO-2D fluid model is used to simulate the movement characteristics of debris flow under precipitation conditions of once in 50 years(2% frequency) and once in 20 years(5% frequency). The results show that when the specific weight gravity of debris flow is 1.83t ·m-3, the characteristic value of debris flow movement in Xiahuyang Gully in 20 years is the smallest and the difference is not significant. When the specific weight gravity of debris flow is 1.97t ·m-3, the characteristic value of debris flow movement in Xiahuyang Gully is once in 50 years the biggest and the difference is huge. When the flow of debris flows of different scales reaches the peak, they all produce larger mud level depth. The simulation results of the debris flow movement characteristic value are further combined with the actual measured cross-sections for inspection and analysis. The peak flow rate of the debris flow event is inferred and is in good agreement with the actual situation, indicating that the results calculated by the prediction model of this paper are reliable. The results in this paper can provide a reference for the construction of debris flow disaster prevention and mitigation and debris flow monitoring and early warning demonstration areas.

Big Disaster from Small Watershed: Insights into the Failure and Disaster-Causing Mechanism of a Debris Flow on 25 September 2021 in Tianquan, China

Abstract:The occurrence of debris flow events in small-scale watersheds with dense vegetation in mountainous areas that result in significant loss of life and missing individuals challenges our understanding and expertise in investigating and preventing these disasters. This has raised concerns about the occurrence of large debris flow disasters from small watersheds. This study focused on a catastrophic debris flow that took place in Longtou Gully (0.45 km 2 ) in Tianquan County, Ya'an City on 25 September 2021, which resulted in 14 deaths and missing individuals. Through comprehensive field investigations, high-precision remote sensing data analyses, and numerical simulations, we analyzed the triggering mechanisms and dynamic processes of this event. Our results indicate that the convergence hollow at the channel head exhibited higher hydraulic conditions during rainfall compared to gentle slopes and convex terrains, leading to the instability of colluvial soil due to the expansion of the saturated zone near the soil–bedrock interface. The entrainment of material eroded from the channel resulted in an approximately 4.7 times increase in volume, and the channel scarp with a height of about 200 m amplified the destructive power of the debris flow. We emphasize the need to take seriously the possibility of catastrophic debris flows in small-scale watersheds, with colluvial deposits in hollows at the channel head under vegetation cover that serve as precursor material sources, and the presence of channel scarps formed by changes in the incision rate of the main river, which is common in the small watershed on both sides. This study provides insights for risk assessment of debris flows in small-scale catchments with dense vegetation cover in mountainous areas, highlighting the importance of vigilance in addressing disasters in small-scale catchments, particularly in regions with increasing human–environment conflicts.

Investigation of 20 August 2019 Catastrophic Debris Flows Triggered by Extreme Rainstorms Near Epicentre of Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:A strong earthquake could trigger a large number of co-seismic landslides and induce large amount of loose materials on steep slopes and in the gullies. Under strong rainfall conditions, these loose materials could induce devastating debris flows, which will endanger the resettled population and destroy the re-built infrastructures. From 19 to 20 August 2019, fourteen debris flows were triggered by extreme rainstorms near the epicentre of the Wenchuan Earthquake. Among the fourteen incidents, three of them produced debris flow dams, which changed the course of the Minjiang River and resulted in flooding at different parts of the reconstructed Miansi town. In addition, sixteen casualties, twenty two missing persons, and destruction of four main roads were reported. In this paper, one typical catchment, named as “Dengxi gully”, near the epicentre of the Wenchuan earthquake (Sichuan Province, China) was chosen as a case study for remote sensing analysis, field investigation of landslide evolution and debris flow development before and after the catastrophic events. The debris flow in the study area was initiated in four stages: (a) generation of a large amount of loose materials from the Wenchuan Earthquake; (b) run-off erosion from co-seismic landslide material on hilly slopes and repeated mobilizations in steep channels over the years; (c) development of high intensity localised rainfall events; (d) wash out of accumulated materials in gully by the flood. The study of “8.20 debris flows” can provide a benchmark for analysis of long-term evolution of debris flows in order to identify potential continuing hazards in the earthquake-affected areas and make proper engineering decisions.

Abstract:Prolonged rainstorms had triggered several large-scale debris flows along Provincial Road 303 near the epicenter of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. A lot of concrete-aggregate plants distributed along this road were buried by the runout debris, leading to a large number of fatalities. A Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) methodology is being developed for debris flows induced by various rainfall scenarios. QRA for these debris flow hazards is of significance to determine the probability distribution, consequence and human risk profile arising from these disasters. With the aid of Geographic Information System (GIS) platform, a potential channelized debris flow catchment in the study area is identified based on remote sensing images and field study. Rainfall intensity-duration thresholds for the local channelized debris flows are used to determine the occurrence probability under six rainfall scenarios for the purpose of hazard analysis. Subsequently, human losses of debris flow are assessed by considering the variations of rainfall events, and the final human risks can be obtained using a general risk model. Finally, the societal human risks are obtained, which provide a benchmark for studying the long-term human risks of these potential debris flows and engineering decision in the perspective of mining manufacture.

Abstract:Debris flows pose serious risks to communities in mountainous areas, often resulting in large losses of human life and property. The impeding presence of urban buildings often affects the runout behavior and deposition of debris flows. But the impact of different building densities and sizes on debris flow dynamics has yet to be quantified to guide urban planning in debris flow risk zones. This study focused on a debris flow that occurred in Zhouqu County, Gansu Province, China on August 7th, 2010, which was catastrophic and destroyed many buildings. The FLO-2D software was used to simulate this debris flow in two scenarios, i.e. the presence and the absence of buildings, to obtain debris-flow intensity parameters. The developed model was then used to further analyze the influence of large buildings and narrow channels within the urban environment. The simulation results show that considering the presence of buildings in the simulation is essential for accurate assessment of debris flow intensity and deposition distribution. The layout of buildings in the upstream urban area, such as large buildings or parallel buildings which form narrow channels, can affect the flow velocity and depth of debris flow heading towards downstream buildings. To mitigate damage to downstream buildings, the relative spacing (d/a) between upstream and downstream buildings should not exceed a value of two and should ideally be even lower. These findings provide valuable insights for improving the resistance of mountainous cities to urban debris flows.

Abstract:The occurrence of the secondary disasters of forest fire has significant impacts on the environment quality and human health and safety. Post-fire debris flow is one of the most hazardous secondary disasters of forest fire. To understand the occurrence conditions of post-fire debris flow and to master its occurrence situation are the critical elements in post-fire hazard assessment. From the viewpoints of vegetation, precipitation threshold and debris flow material sources, this paper elaborated the impacts of forest fire on the debris flow, analyzed the geologic and geomorphic conditions, precipitation and slope condition that caused the post-fire debris flow as well as the primary mechanisms of debris-flow initiation caused by shallow landslide or surface runoff, and reviewed the research progress in the prediction and forecast of post-fire debris flow and the related control measures. In the future research, four aspects to be focused on were proposed, i. e., the quantification of the relationships between the fire behaviors and environmental factors and the post-fire debris flow, the quantitative research on the post-fire debris flow initiation and movement processes, the mechanistic model of post-fire debris flow, and the rapid and efficient control countermeasures of post-fire debris flow.
The formation of the Wulipo landslide and the resulting debris flow in Dujiangyan City, China

Abstract:The Wulipo landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall on July 10, 2013, transformed into debris flow, resulted in the destruction of 12 houses, 44 deaths, and 117 missing. Our systematic investigation has led to the following results and to a new understanding about the formation and evolution process of this hazard. The fundamental factors of the formation of the landslide are a high-steep free surface at the front of the slide mass and the sandstone-mudstone mixed stratum structure of the slope. The inducing factor of the landslide is hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure change caused by heavy continuous rainfall. The geological mechanical model of the landslide can be summarized as “instability - translational slide - tension fracture - collapse” and the formation mechanism as “translational landslide induced by heavy rainfall”. The total volume of the landslide is 124.6×104 m3, and 16.3% of the sliding mass was dropped down from the cliff and transformed into debris flow during the sliding process, which enlarged 46.7% of the original sliding deposit area. The final accumulation area is found to be 9.2×104 m2. The hazard is a typical example of a disaster chain involving landslide and its induced debris flow. The concealment and disaster chain effect is the main reason for the heavy damage. In future risk assessment, it is suggested to enhance the research on potential landslide identification for weakly intercalated slopes. By considering the influence of the behaviors of landslide-induced debris flow, the disaster area could be determined more reasonably.

Abstract:Rainfall is an excitation factor for rainfall-type debris flows, and high-frequency rainfall commonly does not directly trigger large-scale catastrophic debris flows. A low-frequency, large-scale catastrophic debris flow occurred in Heishui Gully (HSG), Pingwu County, Sichuan Province, southwestern China on 12 July 2022. In this study, the HSG debris flow was used as a case study to reveal the formation mechanisms of low-frequency and large-scale catastrophic debris flow triggered by high-frequency gentle rainfall by calculating and analysing a total of five indicators, including the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI), the Freeze-Thaw Index (FTI), the empirical relationship between earthquakes and landslides, the hypsometric integral (HI) and human activities. The study results indicate that high-frequency gentle rainfall is a direct factor in the debris flow outbreak in HSG. Long-duration extreme drought conditions and extreme freeze-thaw erosion provided sufficient soil conditions for debris flow formation. Frequent earthquakes and mature erosional geomorphologic evolution have indirectly contributed to the debris flow formation. Simultaneously, human activities downstream of HSG amplified the risk of debris flow disaster. The results reveal the contribution of extreme climates and human activities to low-frequency, large-scale catastrophic debris flows initiated by high-frequency gentle rainfall, which is significant for accurately assessing and predicting debris flow occurrence.

Abstract:A catastrophic debris flow occurred in Zhouqu County, Gansu Province, Northwestern China, at midnight on 7 August 2010, resulting in damage to > 390 buildings. Assessment of the vulnerability of buildings to debris flow hazards is essential to quantify the risk of debris flows. This paper presents a new family of physical vulnerability curves to assess the damage to buildings by debris flows based on extensive observed data of building damage and simulated debris flow intensity. A database of damaged buildings in the affected area of the Zhouqu debris flow was reconstructed. Numerical simulations using FLO-2D were conducted to determine the intensity of debris flows. A series of physical vulnerability empirical models for assessing the building damage has been proposed using various hazard intensity measures. Since buildings of different structural types have different resistances to debris flows, the vulnerability functions were developed for two typical types of structures, i.e. brick-concrete structures and reinforced concrete-frame structures. The proposed vulnerability functions are comparable with those for debris flows in Switzerland, Italy and Austria. The buildings may be completely destroyed when the debris flow depth is more than one half of the building height for both types of building structures
Hazard Assessment of Debris Flow Based on Geomorphic Information Entropy in Catchment

Abstract:Debris flow is the special disaster occurred in the catchments, which is controlled by the geomorphic system. The theory of geomorphic information entropy which can be used to indict the characteristics of evolution of landforms is the combination of information and Strahler ’s area-altitude analysis. So, it is possible to use geomorphic information entropy to study debris flow catchments and make hazard assessment of debris flow catchments. This paper carries the geomorphic information entropy analysis on the geomorphologic evaluation stage of 21 debris flow catchments in Hadabei, which is located in the southwest part of Xiuyan County with damaged debris flows in 1982. According to the result, the geomorphic information entropy analysis on debris flow catchments is objective, credible, easy to carry out and helpful for evaluation, warning and reduction of debris flow.

Abstract:Debris flows induced by heavy rainfall are a major threat in Northwest and Southwest China, due to its abrupt occurrence and long runout. In light of this, this work presents the runout simulation and risk assessment of the Boshuigou debris flow under different rainfall conditions in Wudu district, Gansu Province, Northwest China. Based on field reconnaissance, the geomorphological feature and main source of the Boshuigou debris flow were described. With the application of the FLO-2D simulation, the potential flow depth and flow extent of the Boshuigou debris flow under 100-year return-period rainfall and 50-year return-period rainfall were calculated. The maximum flow velocities of the Boshuigou debris flow under the 100-year return-period rainfall and 50-year return-period rainfall were 5.46 and 5.18 m/s, respectively. Accordingly, the maximum flow depths were 5.85 and 5.57 m. Then, the hazard zonation was conducted in combination of the construction and other properties within the potential impact zone, and the risk assessment of the Boshuigou debris flow under the 100-year return-period rainfall and 50-year return-period rainfall was finally completed. This work presents a method for debris flow risk assessment considering the solid source and water flow, which can provide a basic reference for mitigation and reduction of geohazards induced by torrential rainfall.
Impact of the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake in China on Subsequent Long-Term Debris Flow Activities in the Epicentral Area

Abstract:The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake triggered the largest number of landslides among the recent strong earthquake events around the world. The loose landslide materials were retained on steep terrains and deep gullies. In the period from 2008 to 2015, numerous debris flows occurred during rainstorms along the Provincial Road 303 (PR303) near the epicentre of the earthquake, causing serious damage to the reconstructed highway. Approximately 5.24×106m3 of debris-flow sediment was deposited shortly after the earthquake. This paper evaluates the evolution of the debris flows that occurred after the Wenchuan earthquake, which helps understand long-term landscape evolution and cascading effects in regions impacted by mega earthquakes. With the aid of a GIS platform combined with field investigations, we continuously tracked movements of the loose deposit materials in all the debris flow gullies along an 18km reach of PR303 and the characteristics of the regional debris flows during several storms in the past seven years. This paper presents five important aspects of the evolution of debris flows: (1) supply of debris flow materials; (2) triggering rainfall; (3) initiation mechanisms and types of debris flows; (4) runout characteristics; and (5) elevated riverbed due to the deposited materials from the debris flows. The hillslope soil deposits gradually evolved into channel deposits and the solid materials in the channels moved towards the ravine mouth. Accordingly, channelized debris flows became dominant gradually. Due to the decreasing source material volume and changes in debris flow characteristics, the triggering rainfall tends to increase from 30mmh−1 in 2008 to 64mmh−1 in 2013, and the runout distance tends to decrease over time. The runout materials blocked the river and elevated the riverbed by at least 30m in parts of the study area. The changes in the post-seismic debris flow activity can be categorized into three stages, i.e., active, unstable, and recession.

Abstract:A large-scale debris flow occurred in Tongzilin Gully in Puge County, Sichuan Province in southwestern China from 4:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. on August 8, 2017. Although early warning measures were taken before the occurrence of the debris flow, the disaster resulted in 25 fatalities, the destruction of 71 houses, and economic losses amounting to 160 million RMB. This study aimed to analyze the movement characteristics of the debris flow, reveal the cause and mechanism of the catastrophe, and assist in avoiding similar future disasters. To this end, we calculated the debris flow density, velocity, and peak discharge and analyzed the dynamic characteristics of the debris flow. The distributions of regional precipitation and solid materials were also determined to analyze the formation conditions. Moreover, the debris flow blockage and disaster amplification mechanisms were investigated through field surveys, remote sensing images, and parameter calculation. The results show that the debris flow was a low-frequency turbulent event with a peak flow rate of once in a hundred years and an average velocity of 6.34 m/s. The debris flow developed under unique conditions, corresponding to the combined action of natural and anthropogenic factors. First, the low-frequency debris flow was initiated by antecedent drought and short-term heavy rainfall. The antecedent drought increased the amount of loose materials in the watershed (141.5 × 104 m3). The antecedent drought and short-term heavy rainfall nearly doubled the scale of the debris flow. Second, coarse particles blocked road culverts in the study area, leading to overflow and exacerbating the disaster. Consequently, the affected area and scale of the debris flow have been enlarged by 25% and by two times, respectively. The study findings provide deeper insight into the initiation and development mechanisms of debris flow disasters in mountainous areas, which may help improve the monitoring, early warning, and forecasting system.

Abstract:Slope falls,slides and flows are usually called landslide hazards or slope geologic hazards,which usually caused catastrophic disaster.The mitigation of landslide hazards is the major sustainable development strategy in many countries.The integrated studies of mitigation,life-cycle design in geotechnical engineering,geotechnical information sharing platform and construction of disaster mitigation office were discussed in this paper.These aspects can improve the performance of disaster prevention and mitigation.
