Abstract:The prediction and evaluation of the change characteristics of non-homogeneous debris flow are an important content of debris flow control project planning and early warning and forecasting system construction. They are also a key issue that needs to be improved in the field of debris flow. By sorting out and analyzing the measured data of the mud level and velocity of the debris flow, a prediction model of the characteristic value of the non-homogeneous debris flow movement is constructed. Based on the previous results, the model can distinguish the change characteristics of the debris flow movement in the study area with fewer factors. Taking the mud-rock flow in Xiahuyang Gully, Lixian County, Longnan area as an example, the FLO-2D fluid model is used to simulate the movement characteristics of debris flow under precipitation conditions of once in 50 years(2% frequency) and once in 20 years(5% frequency). The results show that when the specific weight gravity of debris flow is 1.83t ·m-3, the characteristic value of debris flow movement in Xiahuyang Gully in 20 years is the smallest and the difference is not significant. When the specific weight gravity of debris flow is 1.97t ·m-3, the characteristic value of debris flow movement in Xiahuyang Gully is once in 50 years the biggest and the difference is huge. When the flow of debris flows of different scales reaches the peak, they all produce larger mud level depth. The simulation results of the debris flow movement characteristic value are further combined with the actual measured cross-sections for inspection and analysis. The peak flow rate of the debris flow event is inferred and is in good agreement with the actual situation, indicating that the results calculated by the prediction model of this paper are reliable. The results in this paper can provide a reference for the construction of debris flow disaster prevention and mitigation and debris flow monitoring and early warning demonstration areas.

Abstract:Debris flow is a common geological disaster in mountainous areas, which occurs frequently in the rainy season and has strong mobility and destructiveness, often bringing serious loss of life and property. Previous studies have focused more on single outbreaks of debris flow disasters, and less on multiple outbreaks of debris flow disasters in the same gully during the rainy season, which makes it more difficult to carry out prevention and control work for similar disasters. Because the occurrence of the disaster has its corresponding geomechanical model as the basis, which provides the necessary scientific basis for the prevention and control of the disaster. Through data collection, field investigation, drone aerial photography, modelling and rainfall data analysis, the geological environment of Yizhong River Basin and the frequent occurrence mechanism of debris flow disasters were investigated, and a conjugate shear-type disaster-inducing geomechanical model was proposed. With the help of RAMMS numerical simulation software, the dynamic mechanism of the disaster threatening the life and property safety of the residents in Deqin County was analysed to provide the necessary scientific basis for the prevention and control of the Yizhong River debris flow disaster. Base on the characteristics of the geological environment in alpine and gorge areas, the necessity and advantage of applying the nap-of-the-object photogrammetry technology to engineering geological survey in alpine and gorge areas are put forward.

Abstract:Excessive water in a channel is an important factor that triggers channelized debris flows. Floods and debris flows often occur in a cascading manner, and thus, calculating the amount of runoff accurately is important for predicting the occurrence of debris flows. In order to explore the runoff-rainfall relationship, we placed two measuring facilities at the outlet of a small, debris flow-prone headwater catchment to explore the hydrological response of the catchment. The runoff responses generally consisted of a rapid increase in runoff followed by a slower decrease. The peak runoff often occurred after the rainfall ended. The runoff discharge data were simulated by two different modeling approaches, i.e., the NAM model and the Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) model. The results showed that the NAM model performed better than the HEC-HMS model. The NAM model provided acceptable simulations, while the HEC-HMS model did not. Then, we coupled the calculated results of the NAM model with an empirically based debris flow initiation model to obtain a new integrated cascading disaster modeling system to provide improved disaster preparedness and hazard management. In this case study, we found that the coupled model could correctly predict the occurrence of debris flows. Furthermore, we evaluated the effect of the range of input parameter values on the hydrographical shape of the runoff. We also used the grey relational analysis to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the parameters of the model. This study highlighted the important connections between rainfall, hydrological processes, and debris flow, and it provides a useful prototype model system for operational forecasting of debris flows.

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau suffers from various types of geohazards (collapses, landslides, and debris flows.) due to abrupt changes in complex topography and weather conditions. Global warming and frequent high-intensity earthquakes in recent years have exacerbated the situation. Collapses and landslides provide vast amount of soil and debris which are conveyed downstream by runoff caused by extreme rainfalls to form large-scale debris flows; then, the debris flows block rivers and finally form dam-break floods, that is, a hazard chain triggered by debris flows. Along the evolution direction of the hazard chain, the affected areas are constantly amplified. This study first summarizes the related research studies on river blockage, debris-flow dam failure, and the hazard chain triggered by debris flows and then points out the drawbacks of existing research studies. Overall, the research (including mechanism, risk assessment, key prevention, and control technologies) on the hazard chain triggered by debris flows is still in its infancy and is disconnected among single hazard types in the hazard chain; meanwhile, the understanding of the mechanism of debris flow blocking the river is not enough; the established model and discriminant have minimal application scope, and there is no empirical model and dynamic model of debris-flow dam failure. Finally, several key scientific issues of this field were raised: 1) it is necessary to elaborate the coupling mechanism of debris-flow dam formation and construct the discriminant and numerical model of debris flow blocking the river with high precision and a wide application range. 2) It is necessary to further study the failure mechanism of a debris-flow dam, construct the numerical model of the failure process of a debris-flow dam, and accurately simulate the outburst flood hydrograph. 3) It is necessary to clarify the critical transformation conditions and dynamic evolution process of the hazard chain caused by debris flows, complete the accurate quantitative simulation of the whole disaster chain process, then establish a complete risk assessment system of the hazard chain, and finally develop some key prevention and control technologies suitable for the hazard chain.

Abstract:Debris-flow susceptibility is controlled not only by static effective factors such as topography and lithology, but also by dynamic effective factors such as earthquake, rainfall and human activity. In this paper, a simple model of calculating the dynamic susceptibility is developed based on the assumption of linear relationship between the static and dynamic susceptibilities. The influence of earthquake and rainfall events is represent by two coefficients. The earthquake coefficient is considered as an exponential function of intensity, and a negative power function of elapsed time. The rainfall coefficient is proportional to the occurrence days of heavy rainfall. This model is applied to assess the debris-flow susceptibility of Hengduan mountainous area from 2000 to 2015. Four static effective factors including relative relief, slope, lithology and fault density are used to calculate the static susceptibility by ARCGIS grid toolbox. There are six earthquake events since 1995 whose intensity zones of >= VI are intersected with the Hengduan area. The earthquake coefficient is calculated with the intensity zoning data of each of the six events and then is accumulated to get the final earthquake coefficient in each year. TRMM satellite rainfall data from 2000 to 2015 are collected to extract the occurrence days of heavy rainfall which is used to calculate the rainfall coefficient. The dynamic susceptibilities from 2000 to 2015 are obtained by multiplying the static susceptibility with the earthquake and rainfall coefficients in respective year. Abstract:Debris flows pose serious risks to communities in mountainous areas, often resulting in large losses of human life and property. The impeding presence of urban buildings often affects the runout behavior and deposition of debris flows. But the impact of different building densities and sizes on debris flow dynamics has yet to be quantified to guide urban planning in debris flow risk zones. This study focused on a debris flow that occurred in Zhouqu County, Gansu Province, China on August 7th, 2010, which was catastrophic and destroyed many buildings. The FLO-2D software was used to simulate this debris flow in two scenarios, i.e. the presence and the absence of buildings, to obtain debris-flow intensity parameters. The developed model was then used to further analyze the influence of large buildings and narrow channels within the urban environment. The simulation results show that considering the presence of buildings in the simulation is essential for accurate assessment of debris flow intensity and deposition distribution. The layout of buildings in the upstream urban area, such as large buildings or parallel buildings which form narrow channels, can affect the flow velocity and depth of debris flow heading towards downstream buildings. To mitigate damage to downstream buildings, the relative spacing (d/a) between upstream and downstream buildings should not exceed a value of two and should ideally be even lower. These findings provide valuable insights for improving the resistance of mountainous cities to urban debris flows.

Abstract:The occurrence of debris flow events in small-scale watersheds with dense vegetation in mountainous areas that result in significant loss of life and missing individuals challenges our understanding and expertise in investigating and preventing these disasters. This has raised concerns about the occurrence of large debris flow disasters from small watersheds. This study focused on a catastrophic debris flow that took place in Longtou Gully (0.45 km 2 ) in Tianquan County, Ya'an City on 25 September 2021, which resulted in 14 deaths and missing individuals. Through comprehensive field investigations, high-precision remote sensing data analyses, and numerical simulations, we analyzed the triggering mechanisms and dynamic processes of this event. Our results indicate that the convergence hollow at the channel head exhibited higher hydraulic conditions during rainfall compared to gentle slopes and convex terrains, leading to the instability of colluvial soil due to the expansion of the saturated zone near the soil–bedrock interface. The entrainment of material eroded from the channel resulted in an approximately 4.7 times increase in volume, and the channel scarp with a height of about 200 m amplified the destructive power of the debris flow. We emphasize the need to take seriously the possibility of catastrophic debris flows in small-scale watersheds, with colluvial deposits in hollows at the channel head under vegetation cover that serve as precursor material sources, and the presence of channel scarps formed by changes in the incision rate of the main river, which is common in the small watershed on both sides. This study provides insights for risk assessment of debris flows in small-scale catchments with dense vegetation cover in mountainous areas, highlighting the importance of vigilance in addressing disasters in small-scale catchments, particularly in regions with increasing human–environment conflicts.

Then, the key scientific problem, dam-break mechanism and risk control problem can be solved with the relevant subjects under complex conditions.Through theory and method researches of debris flow proliferation mechanisms of cascade reservoirs, science and technology developments are promoted in the aspects of debris flow and related fields. The overall technological level in the aspect of water conservancy and hydropower can be promoted. Abstract:Building the forest fire prevention road in mountainous areas is an effective means to prevent forest fire from spreading wantonly. Nevertheless, adverse influences are that the construction of these roads has destroyed the inherent stability of the original slope, resulting a large number of unstable slopes appear in the catchment, which could trigger human-generated landslides and debris flows. On June 17, 2022, a landslide-generated debris flow occurred in the Longjiagou catchment, Mianning County, Sichuan Province. The initial landslide that induced this debris flow is one of the unstable slopes on the forest fire prevention road. After the debris flow event, we conducted a detailed on-site investigation of the Longjiagou catchment. Many unstable slopes have been found near the road, and the width of cracks at the rear edge of some unstable slopes has exceeded 10 cm. This is already a very dangerous precursor signal for landslides or debris flow. And several soil samples were collected in the catchment to test the hydraulic conductivity and particle size distribution of soil at different locations. Combined with multi-source data, we comprehensively analyzed the cause and mechanism of the disaster. The dynamic process modeling framework of earth-surfaced flow—Massflow—was adopted to simulate the dynamic process of the debris flow to support the quantitative analysis of this disaster. The results show that the simulation results are basically consistent with the actual situation. Based on field reconnaissance and numerical simulation, the mechanism of debris flow is comprehensively analyzed, which can provide important insights and guidance for the prediction and prevention of such debris flow disasters.

Abstract:A large-scale debris flow occurred in Tongzilin Gully in Puge County, Sichuan Province in southwestern China from 4:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. on August 8, 2017. Although early warning measures were taken before the occurrence of the debris flow, the disaster resulted in 25 fatalities, the destruction of 71 houses, and economic losses amounting to 160 million RMB. This study aimed to analyze the movement characteristics of the debris flow, reveal the cause and mechanism of the catastrophe, and assist in avoiding similar future disasters. To this end, we calculated the debris flow density, velocity, and peak discharge and analyzed the dynamic characteristics of the debris flow. The distributions of regional precipitation and solid materials were also determined to analyze the formation conditions. Moreover, the debris flow blockage and disaster amplification mechanisms were investigated through field surveys, remote sensing images, and parameter calculation. The results show that the debris flow was a low-frequency turbulent event with a peak flow rate of once in a hundred years and an average velocity of 6.34 m/s. The debris flow developed under unique conditions, corresponding to the combined action of natural and anthropogenic factors. First, the low-frequency debris flow was initiated by antecedent drought and short-term heavy rainfall. The antecedent drought increased the amount of loose materials in the watershed (141.5 × 104 m3). The antecedent drought and short-term heavy rainfall nearly doubled the scale of the debris flow. Second, coarse particles blocked road culverts in the study area, leading to overflow and exacerbating the disaster. Consequently, the affected area and scale of the debris flow have been enlarged by 25% and by two times, respectively. The study findings provide deeper insight into the initiation and development mechanisms of debris flow disasters in mountainous areas, which may help improve the monitoring, early warning, and forecasting system.

Abstract:On 8 August 2017, an Ms 7.0 earthquake struck Jiuzhaigou Valley, triggering abundant landslides and providing a huge source of material for potential debris flows. After the earthquake debris flows were triggered by heavy rainfall, causing traffic disruption and serious property losses. This study aims to describe the debris flow events in Zechawa Gully, calculate the peak discharges of the debris flows, characterize the debris flow disasters, propose mitigation countermeasures to control these disasters and analyse the effectiveness of countermeasures that were implemented in May 2019. The results showed the following: (1) The frequency of the debris flows in Zechawa Gully with small- and medium-scale will increase due to the influence of the Ms 7.0 Jiuzhaigou earthquake. (2) An accurate debris flow peak discharge can be obtained by comparing the calculated results of four different methods. (3) The failure of a check dam in the channel had an amplification effect on the peak discharge, resulting in a destructive debris flow event on 4 August 2016. Due to the disaster risk posed by dam failure, both blocking and deposit stopping measures should be adopted for debris flow mitigation. (4) Optimized engineering countermeasures with blocking and deposit stopping measures were proposed and implemented in May 2019 based on the debris flow disaster characteristics of Zechawa Gully, and the reconstructed engineering projects were effective in controlling a post-earthquake debris flow disaster on 21 June 2019.

Abstract:<p>The damage caused by a single natural hazard can be amplified in time and space to form a disaster chain. One such chain was induced by a debris flow that occurred on June 17, 2020 along the Xiaojin River on the eastern Tibetan Plateau of China. The debris flow dammed the Xiaojin River, and subsequent dam breaches instigated a multi-hazard chain that flooded many towns upstream; moreover, the flooding reactivated an ancient landslide downstream, the Aniangzhai landslide. To understand the failure mechanism and risk of such events, a combination of in-situ investigation, remote sensing analysis, and simulation were performed. Field investigations and high-resolution images confirmed that two potential sliding masses detached from the slope, with a overall volume of approximately 30 million m<sup>3</sup>. To understand the overall disaster chain and evaluate the effects linked to these potential sliding masses, the multi-hazard chain was systematically analyzed using various data and approaches, Finding shows that the reactivation of the Aniangzhai landslide are resulted from the continuous down-cutting and erosion by outburst flooding. Finally, the hypothetical scenarios analyses were completed with respect to the landslide dam and resultant flooding. Integrated studies of disasters based on such a systematic approach can be applied to future analysis of similar hazard chains.</p>

Abstract:The Linxia Basin is located in the transition zone between the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and the Loess Plateau in China. Collapse–landslide–debris flow geological disasters are particularly prevalent in this region. Taking a debris flow that occurred in Zhangjiayuan gully, Dongxiang County, as an example, the characteristics and formation mechanism were studied through field investigation and remote sensing interpretation methods. The hazard zoning and influence range of the debris flow were analysed under different precipitation conditions using numerical simulations. The results show that the debris flow in Zhangjiayuan gully experienced medium-to small-scale, rapid and catastrophic viscous mud flows, with activity frequencies ranging from medium to low. Because large numbers of landslides, collapses and overland flows developed on the gully bank slope, material sources for debris flows were abundant but were supplied intermittently. Induced by heavy rainfall, the landslides on the bank slipped into the gully, and then the landslide mass blocked the channel and formed a weir dam. As water converged in the gully, the dam body softened to mud, seepage deformation occurred, and the dam then burst to form a debris flow. This disaster mode represents a kind of rainfall-type landslide–blockage–debris flow disaster chain. Under varying conditions in which heavy rainfall occurs once every 10 years or once every 50 years, debris flows may break out in Zhangjiayuan gully, and the Zheda highway and the associated tunnels located below the gully are in medium–high debris flow danger zones. When a debris flow rushes out of the gully mouth and cannot be discharged in time, it accumulates and buries the highway and tunnels. Therefore, attention should be given to preventing such small-scale sudden debris flow disasters and strengthening the early warning capacity of debris flow prevention to ensure the safe operation of highway.

Abstract:The magnitude and frequency of mountain hazards will continue to increase because of climate change especially in rural mountainous areas, which have not received much attention. In this article, a debris flow disaster chain in Southwest China caused damage to buildings along the river bank was investigated. The disaster chain included a debris flow, river blockage, lake formation, and an outbreak flood, and this study further investigated the disaster-related losses in downstream villages. Based on the characteristics of failed buildings, three structural types were identified, while the functions of undamaged buildings were affected by flooding or siltation by sediments. In addition, the building layout and riparian vegetation zone influenced the blockage effect, which resisted the flood impact and provided protection to rear buildings. Moreover, this disaster changed the river topography, the studied reach changed from a V shape to a wide–shallow shape, the appreciably affected river length was 6270 m, and the gully bed was noticeably raised 15–20 m. Furthermore, the flood control standard of a 50-year return period was recommended for reference, despite the limitations of these suggestions, we hope that this study attracts the attention of researchers on disaster prevention and mitigation in remote rural areas.

Abstract:Debris flows can develop into mega catastrophes in semi-arid regions when the source materials come from landslides, and both snowmelt and precipitation are involved in increasing water discharge. In such environments, the formation of large-scale debris flows exhibits a distinguishable pattern, in which a multi-fold lower triggering rainfall threshold holds compared to humid regions. Previous research mainly focuses on mechanisms in humid environments or neglects variations across aridity classes. In this study, the formation and evolutionary mechanism of a debris flow occurring in a semi-arid context is investigated via field surveys, granularity measurement, terrain and climate analyses, and snow cover change detection. By examining the July 22, 2021, Xiao Dongsuo debris flow at Amidongsuo Park in the Qilian Ranges on the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, the mechanism of debris flows in semi-arid regions is revealed. The research finds that the large debris flow, whose course erosion scales up the disaster by 0.12 million m 3 , is primarily supplied by landslide deposits of 1.16 million m 3 . The debris flow is empowered by the integrated flow of extreme precipitation and extreme heat-stimulated snowmelt. However, the precipitation required to trigger the debris flow is much lower than that of precipitation-dominated ones and those in humid regions. In semi-arid mountains, prolonged extreme heat tends to increase soil moisture in areas covered by snow or permafrost. This reduces slope stability and induces slope failures, amplifying the disaster magnitude and raising disaster risks through extended deterioration. Hence, this study inspects the failure mechanism associated with debris flows in semi-arid regions for a more comprehensive understanding to constitute viable control plans for analogous disasters.

Energy Dissipation of Debris Flow Through Pile Group Obstructions

Abstract:Since the devastating Sichuan Earthquake on May 12, 2008, large-scale landslides and debris flows are predicted to occur in these populous areas over the next 10-30 years. In order to prevent and mitigate the geological disasters, it is of great importance to better understand the mechanism of granular flows and to predict their temporal and spatial scales in an efficient way. In this work, we develop a Roe-type finite volume model of the Savage-Hutter equations. Unstructured grid of either triangular or quadrilateral cells is used to match natural topography wells. After appropriately selecting bed and internal friction coefficients, we conduct a series of numerical flume experiments to simulate debris flow passing through pile group obstruction, which is commonly used in damping the kinetic energy of debris flows. Pile group of different spatial patterns are decorated in the downstream of the flume, and the influences of the spatial distributions of pile group obstruction to their damping effect are investigated.

Abstract:The initial of debris flow can be classified into two types based on their triggering positions, that is, debris flow from slope and debris flow from gully or channel. For the former, great progress has been achieved on the mechanisms of soil failure and liquefaction. The framework established by a series of theories or laws, such as the Mohr–Coulomb criteria, the unsaturated soil mechanics, and the critical state of soil mass, has been used widely in industry and research. However, the details and discrimination basis for the transformation process from landslide into debris flow still need to be further clarified. Relatively, debris flow from gully or channel is more complex due to its various mass sources and the diversity of processes. Nevertheless, through a great number of case studies and experimental statistics, people have gradually recognized the influential rule and critical condition of factors from landform, hydrology, and other aspects on debris flow initiation. Furthermore, based on the theories of granular flow, continuum mechanics, and rheological law, some typical event-based scenarios can also be reproduced by different single-/two-phase depth integral/average numerical models. However, some key knowledge on mechanism and application level is still insufficient, such as the erosion and entrainment mechanism of materials from different sources, the boundary tractions and materials exchange, as well as the selection of prediction indicators. Three current discriminated methodologies for debris flow initiation, that is, the safety factor method, the rainfall indicator method, and the comprehensive assessment method, were summarized in this article. Considering the technical limitation of each methodology, it is believed that the establishment or improvement of a unified, stable, and open-access database system for event registration and query, as well as the development of large-scale and high-precision rainfall monitoring, is still regarded as the important aspect of debris flow prevention in the future. In addition, as an economic and efficiency means for obtaining information on potential threats and real-time hazard messages, the multielement method for debris flow is recommended as a long-term reference.

Abstract:Debris flows are typically caused by natural terrain landslides triggered by intense rainfalls. If an incoming mountain torrent flows along sloping channels at high velocity, huge amounts of sediment (from landslide dams and eroded channel beds) will be entrained into the flows to form debris flows. It is likely that large debris flows are due to the failure of many landslide dams of different scales (due to bank slides or collapses), bed erosion, and solid transport. The catastrophic debris flows that occurred in Wenjia Gully (Wenchuan Earthquake Area), China on August 13, 2010 (two years after the mega earthquake), were caused by intense rainfall and the serious erosion of sloping channels. In the wake of the incident, experimental tests were conducted to better understand the process of sediment erosion and entrainment on the channel bed and the formation of debris flows. The results show that the bed erosion, bank collapses and channel widening caused by erosion accounted for the triggering and scale amplification of downstream debris flows in the Wenjia Gully event. This study illustrates how the hazardous process of natural debris flows can begin several kilometers upstream, and how such a complex cascade of geomorphic events (failure of landslide dams and erosion of the sloping bed) can lead to catastrophic discharges. Neglecting recognition of these hazardous geomorphic and hydrodynamic processes may result in high cost.
