Abstract:The prediction and evaluation of the change characteristics of non-homogeneous debris flow are an important content of debris flow control project planning and early warning and forecasting system construction. They are also a key issue that needs to be improved in the field of debris flow. By sorting out and analyzing the measured data of the mud level and velocity of the debris flow, a prediction model of the characteristic value of the non-homogeneous debris flow movement is constructed. Based on the previous results, the model can distinguish the change characteristics of the debris flow movement in the study area with fewer factors. Taking the mud-rock flow in Xiahuyang Gully, Lixian County, Longnan area as an example, the FLO-2D fluid model is used to simulate the movement characteristics of debris flow under precipitation conditions of once in 50 years(2% frequency) and once in 20 years(5% frequency). The results show that when the specific weight gravity of debris flow is 1.83t ·m-3, the characteristic value of debris flow movement in Xiahuyang Gully in 20 years is the smallest and the difference is not significant. When the specific weight gravity of debris flow is 1.97t ·m-3, the characteristic value of debris flow movement in Xiahuyang Gully is once in 50 years the biggest and the difference is huge. When the flow of debris flows of different scales reaches the peak, they all produce larger mud level depth. The simulation results of the debris flow movement characteristic value are further combined with the actual measured cross-sections for inspection and analysis. The peak flow rate of the debris flow event is inferred and is in good agreement with the actual situation, indicating that the results calculated by the prediction model of this paper are reliable. The results in this paper can provide a reference for the construction of debris flow disaster prevention and mitigation and debris flow monitoring and early warning demonstration areas.

Abstract:The occurrence of the secondary disasters of forest fire has significant impacts on the environment quality and human health and safety. Post-fire debris flow is one of the most hazardous secondary disasters of forest fire. To understand the occurrence conditions of post-fire debris flow and to master its occurrence situation are the critical elements in post-fire hazard assessment. From the viewpoints of vegetation, precipitation threshold and debris flow material sources, this paper elaborated the impacts of forest fire on the debris flow, analyzed the geologic and geomorphic conditions, precipitation and slope condition that caused the post-fire debris flow as well as the primary mechanisms of debris-flow initiation caused by shallow landslide or surface runoff, and reviewed the research progress in the prediction and forecast of post-fire debris flow and the related control measures. In the future research, four aspects to be focused on were proposed, i. e., the quantification of the relationships between the fire behaviors and environmental factors and the post-fire debris flow, the quantitative research on the post-fire debris flow initiation and movement processes, the mechanistic model of post-fire debris flow, and the rapid and efficient control countermeasures of post-fire debris flow.

Abstract:Forests, serving as natural barriers in mountainous regions, can reduce surface erosion, enhance water flow resistance and facilitate sedimentation. While extensive research has been conducted for forests and their capacity to withstand debris flows, there has been relatively little investigation into the interactions between riparian forests and debris flows. In this paper, a field investigation of Keze gully was conducted through section surveys, quadrat surveys and unmanned aerial vehicle field investigations. Based on the flow calculation results, analysis of sediment characteristics, gully morphology change and analysis of stand characteristics, the interaction model between the riparian forest and debris flow in the complex channel was discussed. The results further emphasise the role of forests in mitigating debris flows. Furthermore, the results show that the identified critical slope for the study area provides a threshold to explain two different flow interaction dynamics with riparian forests. Above the critical slope, debris flows predominantly follow the main channel, where the root-soil complex of riparian forests reduces channel bank erosion. However, this erosion can also lead to the uprooting and destruction of trees. Below the critical slope, floodplains are vital in accommodating overflow. Debris flows interact not only with the roots of trees near the riverbank but also with the trunks of trees on floodplains. Trees with a diameter less than 30 cm may also suffer damage due to broken stems.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the formation and propagation processes of a landslide-generated debris flow within a small catchment while considering the effects of vegetation. This process is divided into three stages: rainfall infiltration, slope failure, and debris flow routing, according to their different mechanisms. Existing models that involve the effect of vegetation for each stage, including Richards's model, infinite slope stability model, and the enhanced two-phase debris flow model (Pudasaini <a href="/article/10.1007/s10346-020-01478-4#ref-CR55">2012</a>), were coupled. The tridiagonal matrix algorithm and finite volume method were applied to solve these equations, respectively. Finally, the approach was tested by application to the 2018 debris flow event in the Yindongzi catchment, China. The results showed that the proposed comprehensive model could effectively describe the behaviors of each stage during the formation and propagation processes of landslide-generated debris flows in vegetated area. The roles of vegetation on each stage, such as root water uptake and root soil reinforcement, were also analyzed by performing several scenarios.

Abstract:Check dams and afforestation are widely used to control debris flows; however, the combined effects of mitigation changes caused by sedimentation behind the check dams as well as the growth of vegetation are unclear. This paper reports long-term measurements of the erosion base level behind check dams along the Shengou gully, which is an active debris flow gully with 19 shallow soil landslides along its banks. The loose sediment on the shallow soil landslides, which is affected by afforestation, is the main source of material and energy for debris flows in this gully. The change in the mechanical properties of the loose sediment on the shallow soil landslides was determined. Based on the mechanical properties of the shallow soil landslides and the erosion base level behind the check dams, the volume and potential energy of the shallow soil landslide sediment were calculated. A model of the vegetation coverage, shallow soil landslide energy, and debris flow volume was established and applied to the Shengou gully. The results show that the model can evaluate the different benefits of check dams and afforestation on debris flow mitigation given the sedimentation behind the check dams and the vegetation growth.

Abstract:Debris flow is one special form and the most serious kind of water and soil loss, and may cause regional ecological environment worse step by step. Water and soil loss in this area is very serious. Slope erosion, gravitational erosion and hydraulic erosion are the three basic forms of water and soil loss in the valley of debris flow. The forming conditions of debris flow are the key factors that affected water and soil loss developing level in the drainage basin. Water and soil loss controlling effects in the valley of debris flow is remarkable by usage of harnessing projects. The practices of harnessing projects in Hongyugou Wushan county of Gansu province, Yunnan and Sichuan provinces proved that botanical methods and harnessing projects are very effective to slow down water and soil loss in the valley of debris flow.

Abstract:Excessive water in a channel is an important factor that triggers channelized debris flows. Floods and debris flows often occur in a cascading manner, and thus, calculating the amount of runoff accurately is important for predicting the occurrence of debris flows. In order to explore the runoff-rainfall relationship, we placed two measuring facilities at the outlet of a small, debris flow-prone headwater catchment to explore the hydrological response of the catchment. The runoff responses generally consisted of a rapid increase in runoff followed by a slower decrease. The peak runoff often occurred after the rainfall ended. The runoff discharge data were simulated by two different modeling approaches, i.e., the NAM model and the Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) model. The results showed that the NAM model performed better than the HEC-HMS model. The NAM model provided acceptable simulations, while the HEC-HMS model did not. Then, we coupled the calculated results of the NAM model with an empirically based debris flow initiation model to obtain a new integrated cascading disaster modeling system to provide improved disaster preparedness and hazard management. In this case study, we found that the coupled model could correctly predict the occurrence of debris flows. Furthermore, we evaluated the effect of the range of input parameter values on the hydrographical shape of the runoff. We also used the grey relational analysis to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the parameters of the model. This study highlighted the important connections between rainfall, hydrological processes, and debris flow, and it provides a useful prototype model system for operational forecasting of debris flows.

Abstract:Intense rainfall events in mountain regions result in pronounced geomorphic activity including landslides, debris flows, sediment transport, and large woody debris. This study investigated the factors that affect wood deposition patterns during debris flows and the influence of wood on sediment deposition. We conducted flume experiments to simulate debris flow fans with driftwood and divided the experiments into plain and confluence sets. The plain set considered the condition where the debris flow tributary met a mild terrain, whereas the confluence set considered where the tributary met a mainstream. The results revealed that wood with roots was liable to form a log jam on the tributary, and small logs could travel long distances. In the confluence set, the mainstream flow caused asymmetric expansion of the debris flow fan and drove the small wood logs drifting downstream. In addition, wood logs may affect the sediment morphology, particularly in the plain set, which has no mainstream effect. In the plain set, driftwood constricted the development of fans in both volume and area. The wood also deflected the path and deposition of debris flows, causing an uneven fan surface. Our experiment results were consistent with the Japanese historical events, including the asymmetrical fans expansion in the confluence environment and the correlation between the travel distance and the size of the driftwood. This study provides valuable insights into the deposition patterns of debris flows with driftwood in mountain regions, filling the gap left by previous researches in driftwood-influenced debris flow deposition on fans.

Abstract:Sediment deposition caused by debris flows is an important process controlling the evolution and regression of lake, and even a pervasive environmental problem. The frequent debris flows construct a vital links between mountain slope and Qiong Lake transporting lots of sediment into lake, and further making the lake depth and lake area shallower and smaller constantly. In the paper, we select the Guanba River in the northeast of Qiong Lake as a case studying the effect of debris flows on Lake depositon and the characteristics of typical debris flow, and document the sediment deposition in the Guanba River estuary. The control factors contributing to debris flow initiation indicate that the debris flows are drove by rainfall, earthquake and human activities together, and the occurrence frequency of debris flows in the study area will continue to increase.

Abstract:Check dams and afforestation are two common measures for debris-flow mitigation; however, there is a lack of methods allowing quantitative evaluation of check dam and afforestation effects on debris flow motion and deposition. Laogan Gully is an active debris-flow system with a large landslide on the right hillslope, currently representing the main source of debris flows in the catchment. Several debris flows have occurred since 1985 which led to the construction of check dams and the plantation of silver wattle (Acacia dealbata) trees between 1991 and 1993. These measures significantly reduced the volume of debris flows reaching downstream portions of the system. At the same time, large amounts of sediment were trapped on the gully bed and thereby increased the base level of the torrent, which again tended to stabilize the large landslide on the right hillslope. This paper analyzes sedimentation of debris-flow material on the gully bed and on the fan using 12 trial pits behind the check dams and 6 incised geological sections on the fan. The timing and extent of debris flow motion and deposition was reconstructed using scars and growth suppression events in the annual growth ring series of 306 Acacia trees trapped in the newly formed deposits. The gravitational potential energy of the sediment of the large landslide is calculated according to the change in the erosion base level behind the check dams. On the basis of these results, we constructed a semi-empirical vegetation coverage–landslide energy–debris flow volume model to quantitatively evaluate the effects of the check dams and afforestation on debris-flow mitigation. The model exhibited predictive capabilities for estimating the volume of debris flow generated by the reactivation of landslides. Check dams are found to play a major role in debris-flow mitigation in the early stages, whereas the Acacia trees play an increasingly important role once the check dams are filled. The partial resurgence of the landslide caused a sudden increase in the gravitational potential energy of the sediment source, which in turn affected the effectiveness of the debris-flow mitigation measures.

Influenced on Analysis of Characteristics of Forest Environmental Factors on Debris Flow Occurrence

Abstract:This study was conducted to analyze the forest environmental characteristics on a total of 20 forest environmental factors affecting the debris flow against 272 sites of risk areas. In the case of environmental factors, it showed the high risk of debris flow under the following conditions such as soil depth of less than 30cm, west slope, altitude of 200~300 m, mountain average slope of , sandy loam, igneous rocks, and composite slope. Among the rainfall factors, 50~100 mm of maximum hourly rain fall and 300 mm of maximum rain fall per day have been shown the high risk of debris flow. Furthermore, the high risk of debris flow was related to the river-bed average slope of , the river-bed average width of >10 m, the small amount of debris in river-bed (less than 20% of river-bed structure), the drainage density of >, the 40~60% of area with more than slope, and the 40~60% of areas with risk grade 2 of landslide. In addition, forest environmental factors including the driftwood, soil erosion control structures, age-class 3, crown density (density), and mixed forest were important factors causing the high risk of debris flow.

Debris flow characteristics of the compound channels with vegetated floodplains

Abstract:Compound cross-sections with vegetated floodplains are a common type of cross-section in debris-flow gullies. Floodplain vegetation participates in large-scale debris flow events and regulates debris-flow discharge. Extensive research has been conducted on the water flow characteristics of compound rivers. However, few studies have investigated the debris flow characteristics of compound channels in mountainous areas, particularly those of debris flow and flash flood inundation areas with vegetation. This study discusses the section characteristics of debris flow gullies with vegetated floodplains, gully evolution processes, and their influence on debris flow. The results show that the compound debris flow gully with a vegetated floodplain is formed in the gully from the mature stage to the old-mature stage. The compound sections are developed in flow areas with a gentle slope, which can be bilateral floodplain, unilateral floodplain, and multi-main gully floodplain types. Owing to the vegetation of the floodplain, the roughness of the channel increases, which makes the beach roughness coefficient much larger than that for the main channel. In the integrated Manning coefficient method, the error in resolving the flow velocity and discharge is large and cannot reflect the difference in velocities of the floodplain and main channel, therefore the sectional splitting method is most applicable. Influencing debris flow movement, limiting channel migration, and retaining debris flow to the main channel were the main contributions of the riparian forest zone.

Abstract:Building the forest fire prevention road in mountainous areas is an effective means to prevent forest fire from spreading wantonly. Nevertheless, adverse influences are that the construction of these roads has destroyed the inherent stability of the original slope, resulting a large number of unstable slopes appear in the catchment, which could trigger human-generated landslides and debris flows. On June 17, 2022, a landslide-generated debris flow occurred in the Longjiagou catchment, Mianning County, Sichuan Province. The initial landslide that induced this debris flow is one of the unstable slopes on the forest fire prevention road. After the debris flow event, we conducted a detailed on-site investigation of the Longjiagou catchment. Many unstable slopes have been found near the road, and the width of cracks at the rear edge of some unstable slopes has exceeded 10 cm. This is already a very dangerous precursor signal for landslides or debris flow. And several soil samples were collected in the catchment to test the hydraulic conductivity and particle size distribution of soil at different locations. Combined with multi-source data, we comprehensively analyzed the cause and mechanism of the disaster. The dynamic process modeling framework of earth-surfaced flow—Massflow—was adopted to simulate the dynamic process of the debris flow to support the quantitative analysis of this disaster. The results show that the simulation results are basically consistent with the actual situation. Based on field reconnaissance and numerical simulation, the mechanism of debris flow is comprehensively analyzed, which can provide important insights and guidance for the prediction and prevention of such debris flow disasters.

Abstract:Post-fire debris flows have attracted considerable research attention because of their unique characteristics associated with forest fire. Most studies focus on debris flows that occur in the early post-fire years, the understanding of long-term debris-flow risk in burned areas was poor due to lack of evolutionary evidences that derive from field investigations. Through a tracking investigation of seven debris flow events with total seventeen debris flows during the six post-fire years in the burned area in Sichuan province of China, this study analyzed the evolutionary characteristics of post-fire debris flow. The results indicate that the frequency of debris flow events was the highest (five events per year) in the first post-fire year, which then decreased to twice in the following 5 years. Moreover, triggering and antecedent rainfall of these debris flow events increased over time. The material erosion in the initiation processes of debris flow followed the time sequence from runoff-initiated erosion to bank slide erosion to multi-stage bank slide and shallow landslide erosion. Burn severity correlated weakly to bank slides despite that it was directly proportional to runoff-initiated erosion. The particle size of debris-flow deposition gradually increased over time. More than 50% of the multi-stage landslides were undergoing deformation processes until the sixth post-fire year, acting as the potential source material for subsequent debris flows. Finally, a conceptual model with three material erosion steps and two consumptions was proposed to describe the evolution characteristics of post-fire debris flows. The results may provide scientific basis for the long-term debris-flow risk evaluation and the design of protection program in a recently burned area.

Abstract:A debris flow, with terraced fields as the source area, broke out on June 25th, 2018 in the Xiaotuga area of Yunnan Province, China, and this kind of debris flow is rarely recorded. Two purposes in this study: (1) the influence of flow drag force on slope stability; (2) back-analyze the movement process of debris flow. First, the geological background and movement of this debris flow were described based on a field investigation. Then, drag force, calculated by the laminar flow theory, is added to the slope stability calculation model, which elaborates the initiation process of this disaster. Moreover, dynamic simulation software (DAN3D) was used to simulate the kinematic process of the debris flow with a variety of combination models. The study shows that the terrace area can quickly produce surface runoff and create a drag force under rainfall conditions, which is the essential reason for the initiation of debris flow. In addition, the use of the FVV (Frictional-Voellmy-Voellmy) model is found to provide the best performance in simulating this type of debris flow, which reveals that it lasts approximately 200 s and that the maximum velocity is 12 m/s.

Abstract:Debris flows are a major geological hazard in mountainous regions. For improving mitigation, it is important to study the spatial distribution and factors controlling debris flows. In the Bailong River Basin, central China, landslides and debris flows are very well developed due to the large differences in terrain, the complex geological environment, and concentrated rainfall. For analysis, 52 influencing factors, statistical, machine learning, remote sensing and GIS methods were used to analyze the spatial distribution and controlling factors of 652 debris flow catchments with different frequencies. The spatial distribution of these catchments was divided into three zones according to their differences in debris flow frequencies. A comprehensive analysis of the relationship between various factors and debris flows was made. Through parameter optimization and feature selection, the Extra Trees classifier performed the best, with an accuracy of 95.6%. The results show that lithology was the most important factor controlling debris flows in the study area (with a contribution of 26%), followed by landslide density and factors affecting slope stability (road density, fault density and peak ground acceleration, with a total contribution of 30%). The average annual frequency of daily rainfall > 20 mm was the most important triggering factor (with a contribution of 7%). Forest area and vegetation cover were also important controlling factors (with a total contribution of 9%), and they should be regarded as an important component of debris flow mitigation measures. The results are helpful to improve the understanding of factors influencing debris flows and provide a reference for the formulation of mitigation measures.

Abstract:Debris flow has a very strong destructive power which can cause a great loss of human lives and belongings, so for the purpose of a better disaster prevention and reduction, it is necessary to strengthen the knowledge about the characteristics and regulations of the motion process of debris flow. In order to analyze debris flow entrainment of path material and the influence of the distribution of entrainment zone on the dynamic process of debris flow, the numerical simulation of debris flow dynamic process of different entrainment zones is achieved by combining the theory of SH granular flow and the method of finite volume discretization. The calculation results show that due to energy loss and momentum transfer, the overall speed of debris flow is decreased and the part flow depth increased, but when the entrainment zone is at high position, the entrainment happens early, and the after-entrainment acceleration is more significant, so the mass increased by the entrainment will cause a larger disaster zone and a stronger destruction.
