Abstract:The intensive soil-water interaction in unsaturated expansive soil is one of the major reasons for slope failures. In this paper, the soil-water interaction is investigated with the full-scale field inspection of rainwater infiltration and comprehensive experiments, including wetting-induced softening tests, swelling, and shrinkage tests. It is demonstrated that the soil-water interaction induced by seasonal wetting-drying cycles is very complex, and it involves coupled effects among the changes in water content, suction, stress, deformation and shear strength. In addition, the abundant cracks in the expansive soil play an important role in the soil-water interaction. The cracks disintegrate the soil mass, and more importantly, provide easy pathways for rainfall infiltration. Infiltration of rainwater not only results in wetting-induced softening of the shallow unsaturated soil layers, but also leads to the increase of horizontal stress. The increase of horizontal stress may lead to a local passive failure. The seasonal wetting-drying cycles tend to result in a down-slope creeping of the shallow soil layer, which leads to progressive slope failure.

Abstract:Abstract Most deep-seated landslides are characterized by large volumes with deep shear surfaces. They are sensitive to hydrological forcing, especially in climate change scenarios. This paper studies the role of soil–water interaction in affecting the motion of a deep-seated landslide near the southeast coast of China, where seasonal rainfall combined with annual typhoons caused the instability of a previous stable slope. A comprehensive investigation consisting of field monitoring and experiments of soil–water interaction is carried out. The monitoring data show that the landslide exhibits alternate dormant and active stages, corresponding to rainy and dry seasons, respectively. The enduring precipitations predominate the landslide motion, while intensive rainfall brought by typhoon events leads to transient deformation. In addition, wet treatment of intact and reconstituted soils is adopted to mimic the interaction between rainwater and landslide material. The results obtained from in-situ and laboratory direct shear tests indicate that the soil–water interaction is time-dependent. The long-term interaction gives rise to significant strength reduction of soils, thereby regulating the movement of the landslide.

Abstract:Extreme rainfall erosivity , the capacity of intense rainfall to induce soil erosion, is vital for anticipating future impacts on soil conservation. Despite extensive research, significant differences persist in terms of understanding influencing mechanisms, potential impacts, estimation models and future trends of extreme rainfall erosivity. Quantitatively describing extreme rainfall erosivity remains a key issue in existing research. In this study, we comprehensively reviewed the literature to assess the relationships between extreme rainfall characteristics and rainfall erosivity, between extreme rainfall erosivity and soil erosion, estimation models and trend prediction. The aim was to summarize previous related research and achievements, providing a better understanding of the generation, impacts and future trends of extreme rainfall erosivity. Future research directions should include identifying the thresholds of extreme rainfall events, increasing research attention on tropical cyclones in terms of rainfall erosivity, considering on the impact of extreme rainfall erosivity on soil erosion, and improving rainfall erosivity estimation and simulation prediction methods. This study could contribute to adapting to global climate change and aiding in formulating soil erosion prevention and environmental protection recommendations.

On the Landslide Hazard with the Impact of Climate Change in Central Taiwan

Abstract:<p>Due to active tectonic activity, the rock formations are young and highly fractured in Taiwan area. The dynamic changing of river morphology makes the highly weathered formations or colluviums prone to landslide and debris flow. For the past decade, the effect of climate change is significant and creates more and more extreme weather events. The change of rainfall behavior significantly changes the landslide behavior, which makes the large-scale landslides, like the Shiaolin landslide, possible. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the new technologies for landslide investigation, monitoring, analysis, early warning, etc.</p><p>Since the landslide hazards in Taiwan area are mainly induced by heavy rainfall, due to climate change and the subsequent extreme weather events, the probability of landslides is also increased. Focusing on the upstreams of the watersheds in Central Taiwan, this project studied the behavior and hazard of shallow and deep-seated landslides. Different types of susceptibility models in different catchment scales were tested, in which the control factors were analyzed and discussed. This study also employs rainfall frequency analysis together with the atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) downscaling estimation to predict the extreme rainfalls in the future. Such that the future hazard of the shallow and deep-seated landslide in the study area can be predicted. The results of predictive analysis can be applied for risk prevention and management in the study area.</p>

Abstract:Man-land relationship always bears great significance in water soil conservation study. The evolution of soil erosion process from a nature pattern to an accelerated pattern reflects the upgrading impact man exerted on its environment. Based on the investigation of the historical development of accelerated-erosion, it is clear that human activity is the main controlling factor. Man's activities engendered the accelerated erosion directly or indirectly through influencing other geographical factor matters to vegetation and soil. The inner cause of accelerated erosion is the lost of balance between population and environment. People's pursuit of better life with ignorance of sustainable view leads to unbalanced exploitation of resources and unlimited agriculture colonization, which inevitably engendered the degradation of the fragile ecosystem, especially in the northwest and southwest of China. Although a lot of efforts have been made to conserve the depleting soil resources, which is crucial to the survival of human kind, many problems left unresolved and a deeper discussion in a comprehensive view is expected.
Temporary Confined Water-Induced Landslide in the Binary Structure of a Gentle Slope: A Case Study of the Fanshantou Landslide

Abstract:With the increase in rainfall, landslides occur on many gentle slopes in the mountainous areas of southeast China. Gentle slopes have a particular dual geological structure, i.e., the lower part is a gravel soil layer with good water permeability, and the surface layer is clay soil with relatively poor water permeability. Under conditions of heavy rainfall, a gentle slope with this structure is likely to collect temporary confined water. The intermittent creep of the upper slope is caused by the floating force of the temporary confined water, which causes landslide disasters. The conditions that bring about temporary confined water are related not only to the stratum structure, but also to the rainfall intensity and the initial height of the water table level. On the basis of the characteristics of the stratum of the gentle slope landslide on the front of Fanshantou Mountain, we constructed a hydrological model in GEO-STUDIO. We investigated the effect of different rainfall intensities and initial water table levels on confined water under continuous rainfall conditions and conducted a corresponding stability analysis. The results show that when both the initial water table level and the rainfall intensity are high, temporary confined water is formed rapidly, increasing the chance of a landslide disaster. The research results provide a theoretical basis for the treatment of landslides on similar gentle slopes in the mountainous areas of southeast China.

Abstract:Extreme rainfall events can make disproportionally larger contributions than common rainfalls to soil erosion rates. Yet assessing the importance of different soil erosion processes during such events remains a critical challenge, especially due to a lack of field observations. Based on detailed field surveys and remote‐sensing analyses, we therefore provide erosion budgets for three representative catchments in the Chinese Loess Plateau, following an exceptional rainstorm event (26/07/2017; estimated return period: 200 years). Our results show that the associated catchment‐scale erosion intensities were 2,815±529 t/km2 for rill erosion, 787±486 t/km2 for gully erosion, 4,433±657 t/km2 for landsliding and 3,927±1,009 t/km2 for the collapse of implemented Soil and Water Conservation Measures (SWCMs, specifically terraces and check dams). Hence, landslides (37±4%) and SWCMs collapses (33±4%) were the most important sediment sources, followed by rill (24±3%) and gully erosion (7±4%). The lower contribution of gully erosion likely results from earlier vegetation restoration efforts. Overall, our results indicate that successful erosion control during extreme events strongly depends on integrative and robust catchment management strategies. Specifically, the spatial intersecting of forestland and grassland can play a large role, with reforestation on problematic slopes being an important strategy limiting rill and gully erosion. Sufficient consideration should be given to the planning and maintenance of terraces and check dams. The latter should be constructed with good flood‐release facilities, meanwhile many small‐scale dams likely work better than a few large ones. Abstract:Unsaturated soils are ubiquitous on the surface of the Earth and play an important role in construction engineering and vegetation growth. Their properties are governed not only by the stress state but also by the moisture content (i.e., suction), and are influenced by many factors such as engineering activities, climate change and vegetation. Seepage, deformation and instability in unsaturated soils have led to many disasters (e.g., slope failures, excessive embankment settlement and ecological degradation) and pose a threat to sustainable development, especially under climate change. According to the International Disaster Database, unsaturated soil slope failures have been responsible for over 10 million deaths over the past 50 years. The classical theory of unsaturated soil mechanics is inadequate to accurately analyse seepage-deformation-stability coupled problems under the effects of climate change and engineering activities. It also does not consider the hydromechanical interaction between unsaturated soil and vegetation. To redress these lacunae in the applicability of the classical theory, the research team led by the first author of this paper conducted extensive research on unsaturated soil mechanics and its applications. The team revealed the state-dependent hydromechanical coupling behaviour of unsaturated soils and developed a novel state-dependent elasto-plastic constitutive framework. The new framework was used to formulate design guidelines to improve the design of slopes and pavements. The research team also developed a theoretical method for calculating the seepage and stability of vegetated unsaturated soils, establishing a solid scientific basis for investigations of unsaturated bioengineered slopes. The team also developed a novel sustainable cover system using construction waste that eliminates the need for a geomembrane. This new system was successfully applied at the Xiaping landfill site, which is the largest domestic waste landfill in Shenzhen, and has now been adopted by China's national standard "Technical Code for Geotechnical Engineering of Municipal Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill".

Abstract:Human needs like food and clean water are directly related to good maintenance of healthy and productive soils. A good understanding of human impact on the natural environment is therefore necessary to preserve and manage soil and water resources. This knowledge is particularly important in semi-arid and arid regions, where the increasing demands on limited water supplies require urgent efforts to improve water quality and water use efficiency. It is important to keep in mind that both soil and water are limited resources. Thus, wise use of these natural resources is a fundamental prerequisite for the sustainability of human societies. This Special Issue collects 15 original contributions addressing the state of the art of soil and water conservation research. Contributions cover a wide range of topics, including (1) recovery of soil hydraulic properties; (2) erosion risk; (3) novel modeling, monitoring and experimental approaches for soil hydraulic characterization; (4) improvement of crop yields; (5) water availability; and (6) soil salinity. The collection of manuscripts presented in this Special Issue provides more insights into conservation strategies for effective and sustainable soil and water management.

Abstract:Humans have paid a lot of attention to environmental geological challenges in recent years. Landslides, being one of the most prevalent geological disasters, are characterized by their suddenness and destructiveness. Southwest China is prone to landslides and debris flows due to its unique geological structure. This paper uses landslides in southwest China as an example, focusing on research on landslide initiation mechanisms and outlining modern landslide monitoring devices and prediction models. Landslides are caused by external variables such as persistent precipitation, groundwater movement, and significant seismic activity, as well as interior reasons such as fine particle rearrangement and the action of positive pore water. The reduction of the friction coefficient of the shear surface, which is induced by the increase of the shear rate, the supercritical carbon dioxide and superheated steam of the shear zone, and the mineral recrystallization process on the shear surface, all have an important impact on reducing the friction coefficient of the shear surface, is a key factor in the occurrence of high-speed remote landslides. Real-time landslide monitoring using space-air-ground and acoustic emission technology, as well as the creation of machine learning-based forecast models, have aided in the research of landslide development and early warning.
The Spatiotemporal Variations in Soil Erosion and Its Dominant Influencing Factors in the Wenchuan Earthquake-Stricken Area

Abstract:Earthquakes have obvious influences on the spatiotemporal changes in soil erosion intensity in earthquake-stricken areas. However, fewer studies have been conducted to evaluate the spatiotemporal changes in soil erosion before and after the Wenchuan earthquake and its dominant factors in different periods. In order to explore the above issue, this study quantitatively analyzed the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of soil erosion in the Wenchuan earthquake-stricken area from 2000 to 2019 based on the RUSLE model, gravity center model, and its dominant factors in different periods were determined using Geodetector. The research results indicated that: (1) The amount of mean total erosion in the Wenchuan earthquake-stricken area during 2000–2019 was 10.05 × 108 t, with an average soil erosion modulus of 2038.2 t/(km2·a), indicating mild erosion. (2) The spatiotemporal patterns of soil erosion changed greatly in the Wenchuan earthquake-stricken areas during 2000–2019. Areas with intensified soil erosion were mainly distributed in Lixian, Wenchuan, Xiaojin, and other areas near the Longmenshan fault zones. (3) Landslides, debris flows, and floods caused by the Wenchuan earthquake contributed to aggravating the soil erosion intensity in the stricken area. (4) During 2000–2019, the soil erosion intensity showed an overall decreasing trend, while the soil erosion intensity showed an increasing trend around 2008 due to the Wenchuan earthquake. (5) During 2000–2019, soil erosion in the Wenchuan earthquake-stricken area has been greatly affected by vegetation, terrain, and land use types. The research results could provide important decision-making support for soil erosion prevention and ecosystem restoration in the Wenchuan earthquake-stricken area. In addition, these results would be conducive to revealing and understanding the interactive process of "Water–Soil–Vegetation" in mountainous regions all over the world.

Abstract:Climate change has caused a more heterogeneous distribution of extreme precipitation, leading to the deterioration of drought-flood abrupt alternation (DFAA) events and soil erosion. The security and sustainable utilization of water and soil resources are severely threatened. Previous studies have focused separately on these two aspects, failing to comprehensively consider their interrelationship. Furthermore, these studies often rely on climate models with convection parameterization, resulting in substantial uncertainties. We use a 4 km convective permitting model (CPM) to generate reliable outputs for extreme precipitation. By incorporating the long-cycle drought-flood abrupt transition index and the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation model, we analyze the changes in DFAA events and soil erosion, as well as their interconnectedness. The results show that the CPM outperforms coarse-resolution climate models in reproducing erosive rainfall and simulating the heterogeneous distribution of rainfall by capturing convection processes effectively. Projections indicate an escalation in the occurrence of DFAA events and soil erosion due to the more uneven distribution of precipitation. Specifically, the frequency of flood-to-drought (FTD) events within DFAA is projected to rise from 3.8 to 4.7 per decade. Soil loss is projected to increase 61 t·hm −2 ·a −1 , with 73% of the area experiencing more severe soil erosion intensity. A positive correlation between FTD events and soil erosion is found throughout most of Guangdong. This correlation will be further amplified with an increase in the frequency of FTD events. Consequently, existing soil conservation measures are rendered inadequate, presenting substantial challenges for climate change adaptation and ecological protection in the region.

New challenges in erosion and sedimentation research: A Chinese perspective

Abstract:Erosion may be classified according to the erosion agent into water erosion, gravitational erosion, glacial erosion, and wind erosion (aeolian erosion). Complex erosion caused by two or more agents can occur in watersheds and river corridors, producing unique features and causing new problems. Earthquake erosion represents the mass movements caused by earthquakes. The volume of sediment mobilised by earthquake erosion may be 10-100 times greater than that for other types of erosion. Nevertheless, only a very small fraction (<0.2%) of the sediment from earthquake erosion will be transported over long distances and it may therefore have little effect on fluvial processes in large rivers. Grain erosion is a phenomenon involving the disintegration or breakdown of bare rocks under the action of insolation and temperature change, the detachment of the constituent grains by wind, the downslope flow of grains under the influence of gravity and the accumulation of the grains at the toe of the mountain forming a depositional fan. Grain erosion can result in airborne particles and cause injury to humans, and has resulted in numerous slope debris flows. More effort needs to be directed to developing control strategies. Neo-tectonic activity can trigger landslides and avalanches, which dam rivers and initiate intensive fluvial erosion. A landslide dam may develop into a knickpoint, if it is stabilized by the long-term action of the flow. Large knickpoints can totally change the fluvial processes and river morphology. Bed load motion in mountain streams is complex and the available bed load formulae are in many cases not applicable. The measured and estimated rates of bed load transport can differ by several orders of magnitude. The measured bed load transport rate in the Diaoga River can vary by as much as 1000 times under steady flow conditions, as a result of the dramatic difference in the incoming sediment load and different degrees of development of bed structures. New theories and new formulae for bed load transport in mountain streams are needed. Eco-sedimentation is a new challenge in sedimentation studies. The biodiversity of benthic invertebrates highly depends on the stability and diversity of bed sediment. Pollutants in water may be adsorbed by suspended sediment and accumulate in the bed sediment bed. Benthic invertebrates can develop high concentrations of heavy metals due to their proximity to contaminated sediment. These new challenges represent new growth points of research on erosion and sedimentation in China and worldwide.

Abstract:As a complex geomorpholohical, hydrological, and ecological process, soil erosion is affected by the landscape heterogeneity. This study analyzed dynamic variations in landscape pattern and soil erosion within an approximate 11,100 km(2) area of in the upper Yangtze River basin over a period of 28 years to elucidate the interrelationships between landscape pattern and soil erosion. Different landscape classes affected soil erosion in different ways. The impacts of forest, shrub or grassland on soil erosion followed the general mitigating trend observed in the overall landscape changes. In contrast, soil erosion rates distinctly increased on cultivated lands. Forests and grasslands with low human impact played a dominant role in the process of land rehabilitation and should be given more attention in efforts to protect and manage the watersheds of the upper Yangtze River.

Abstract:China's Loess Plateau remains one of the most serious water erosion areas on Earth, while runoff and sediments of the Yellow River continue to decrease due to soil and water conservation (SWC) measures. Besides, climate conditions are dynamic. A total of 197 rainfall-runoff events from 1965 to 2020 in the Huangfuchuan catchment, which were divided into 3 sub-periods (P0: 1965 - 1982 limited measures; P1: 1983-1998 only dams and P2: 1999-2020 dams and revegetation), were selected to reveal the differences and mechanisms of runoff generation and sediment dynamics. The results show that: 1) anthropogenic activities played a leading role in water and sediment reduction; 2) infiltration-excess overland flow during the first two periods was dominant mechanism, but the results imply a potential shift towards saturation-excess overland flow occurring more often during P2; 3) the studied system, in a highly erodible region, is transport-limited; 4) sediment connectivity is reduced noticeably at the catchment scale, in which the decrease in index of connectivity (IC) values mainly resulted from the increase in proportion of the most disconnected areas of the catchment, especially in P2. These findings can help towards a better understanding of the mechanisms behind the changes in sediment dynamics, which can be applied to develop and implement sustainable water and soil conservation planning in the local or other similar areas. Besides this knowledge is very important for improving hydrological and sedimentological models in order to forecast the effects of human induced changes.

Abstract:With point source pollution gradually being controlled,the harm of nonpoint source pollution to(economic) and social sustainable development are becoming more and more serious.Because of the close relationship between soil erosion and nonpoint source pollution,it is absolutely necessary and imperative to intensify the research on soil and water conservation controlling nonpoint source pollution. The concept of water(environment) quality effects of soil and water conservation was put forward for the first time;External and(domestic) researched findings related with soil and water conservation and soil erosion on nonpoint source pollution were summed up into three respects: analyses of affecting factors of pollutants movement and mechanism,research and development of models of nonpoint source pollution,research of controlling measures of nonpoint source pollution.Their researching progresses were introduced and reviewed,and their developing tendency was analyzed.

Abstract:Influenced by global climate change, extreme climatic events have occurred frequently in recent years. Under the increasingly severe climate environment, the engineering properties of soil mass change dramatically, resulting in a large number of landslide disasters, which bring many new challenges to geotechnical and geological engineering fields. This paper analyses the role of climate change and soil cracking in the process of changing the stability of slope, summarizes the mechanism of rainfall, temperature, air humidity, wind and solar radiation affecting the stability of slope, analyses the correlation effect of soil cracking and climate change in the process of changing the stability of slope. By introducing the roles played by various factors in changing slope stability, this paper constructs a slope stability analysis system including meteorological parameters as well as soil cracking. The system identifies key research questions for future research on the stability of soil slopes under soil-atmosphere interaction, and the mechanism of action revealed in this paper can provide reference for the geotechnical engineering field to deal with related slope problems. In view of the current research status of the subject, the author proposes the future research directions and priorities.
