Abstract:The effect of the self-designed new flux on purification of the A356 aluminum alloy was measured by pressure-reduction solidification method and ratio of pinholes in this article.The results show that under the pouring temperature of 720 ℃ and the 40% humidity,the effect of the new flux on purification is better than other two flux used in the market.In view of the price,in the experiment of the quantity of the new flux,it is found that under the pouring temperature of 720 ℃ and the 40% humidity,the effect of the new flux on purification is better when the quantity of the new flux is 0.5%.In addition,the reason that the new flux has the better effect is analyzed by the kinetics of removing inclusion.

Abstract:A new flux—JDN-Ⅰ including rare earth compounds was invented to be aimed at the problems which are high energy consume ,high pollution and high hydrogen and high impurity contents existing in aluminu m industry.The flux was used simply by the way of covering on aluminum melt.With complex physical and chemical effect,functions of the flux in heat and water in sulating、degassing、drossing、covering、refining and modification for the alumi num melt were excellent,and could greatly improve fluidity and mechanical proper ties of the alloy A356.By using the flux,environment pollution could be protected also.

Abstract:The fluxes, a rare earth flux——JDN-I flux, C2Cl6 and a three-functions flux——flux B, were used to purify A00 melt, respectively and then three kinds of flux films were obtained. Tested and analyzed with SEM, EPMA, EDS, XRD and XRF, it was found that a protection film of two layers is generated by JDN-I flux during the purification of aluminum melt. The internal layer of the film that contacts with aluminum melt has a kind of net structure that is tight and tenacious, which is interweaved with streaky structure. The external layer that contacts with atmosphere is also composed of crystalline substances. The other flux films have not the above characters. Therefore, JDN-I flux has covering, protecting, and low melting loss functions.

Abstract:A new flux, JDN-I, including rare earth compounds, for purification of the scraps of 99.99% aluminum foil was introduced. The experimental results indicate that its function of degassing and deoxidizing is excellent. The hydrogen content of the scrap aluminum foil melt purified by JDN-I flux decreases greatly from 4.5 mL/kg to 1.2 mL/kg at 720 ℃. The tensile strength of the samples refined with JDN-I flux increases by 19.2% and the elongation increases by 38.3% in comparison with those without flux. The purification mechanism of JDN-I was discussed and a theory of covering, protecting & atomic purification was also put forward.

Abstract:With the aim of obtaining a refining flux that is stable and provides effective refining of aluminum melt, a new strategy of designing the flux composition has been proposed. Ten fluxes were designed, by selecting ten molten salt compounds according to their thermophysical parameters, physical properties, and thermodynamic analysis. The melting points of the ten fluxes, and the phases transformation of the fluxes after melting, were studied by DSC and XRD, respectively. The contact angles between four groups of fluxes and alumina at refinement temperatures were studied, and the effect of refinement was characterized by a metallographic microscope. The process of the fluxes removing inclusions and degassing was analyzed thermodynamically. The research findings indicate that flux #10 (11.0 wt.%NaF, 29.5 wt.%NaCl, 46.5 wt.%Na2CO3, 3.0 wt.%CaF2, 10.0 wt.%Na3AlF6) has a melting point (562.2 °C) below the refining temperature. At the refining temperature (760 °C), flux #10 has the lowest contact angle, of 12.78°. In addition, compared to that of flux STJ–A3, currently used in practice, flux #10 has a better refining effectiveness, with the pores and inclusions content of the sample being reduced to 1.11% from 2.96%.

Study on Iron Purification from Aluminium Melt by Na2B4O7 Flux

Abstract:A study was carried out to investigate the effect of Na2B4O7 on the reduction of Fe concentration from commercial purity aluminium. Experiments were conducted and the double barrier layers theory was used to study the kinetics of the purification process. Results showed that the iron reduction ratio increased with the addition of Na2B4O7 and the holding time, which follows the first order exponential decay law. The addition of Na2B4O7 containing flux could reduce iron content from 0·14 wt-% to less than 0·1 wt-% and achieve an optimal ratio of 44%. Thermodynamic calculations and the XRD, SEM and EDX analyses of the molten sludge indicated that formation of Fe2B could occur spontaneously in molten aluminium with the addition of Na2B4O7 containing flux.
The Degassing Effect of JDN-I Flux on Aluminium Melt

Abstract:The degassing effect of a new flux JDN -I containing RE compounds was investigated. The experimental results indicate that in comparison with by no flux, by covering the flux on the melt at 720℃ ,the hydrogen content of A356 melt has been decreased from 0.30mL /100gAl to 0.09mL /100gAl and that of A199.9 melt from 0.25mL/100gAl to 0. 14ml/100gAl, and at 700℃ ,the hydrogen content of A356 melt has been decreased from 0.18mL/100gAl to 0.08mI/100gAl and that of A199.9 melt from 0.19mL /100gAl to 0.12mL /100gAl. The degassing mechanism of the flux has been aslo discussed simply.
Advanced Design and Optimization of Tailored Refining Fluxes for the Purification of Mg-Li Alloys

Abstract:This study systematically investigates the influence of integrating KCl into the refining flux on the purification efficiency of Mg-Li alloy. The findings reveal that an optimal purification effect is achieved with a 50 % addition of KCl to the refining flux, resulting in a remarkable 56 % reduction in volume fraction of inclusions to 0.17 % and an 80 % improvement in elongation to 29.1 %. The developed novel quaternary refining flux is composed of KCl + LiCl + LiF + CaF2 (3:3:1:2, wt.%). Based on thermodynamic calculation and analysis, the purification mechanism is elucidated, demonstrating that KCl enhances purification efficiency by reducing flux and melt viscosity, improving wettability, increasing contact area, and facilitating flux adsorption on inclusions. Excessive KCl addition hinders purification by decreasing flux density, slowing settling velocity, and affecting the purification process. The quaternary flux, applying to industrial Mg-Li alloy scrap, demonstrates outstanding purification performance with a 73 % reduction in inclusion volume fraction to 0.33 % and a remarkable 584 % increase in elongation to 17.1 %. The development and application of a novel Mg-Li alloy flux are of significant importance for promoting the industrial development of Mg-Li alloys.

Abstract:A novel flux charging method and a crucible quenching method were employed to study the mechanism of solid fluxes refining method regarding the removal of oxide inclusions (Al 2 O 3 ) from molten aluminum. Electrochemical polishing method was adopted to prepare surfaces of the samples. Through experiments, the morphology of the residual solidified flux in the solidified samples as well as the wetting action of the molten flux during refining were observed for the first time. Three wetting regimes denoted by absorbing regime, engulfing regime and penetration regime correlating with the removal of oxide films (the most typical and common oxide inclusions in molten aluminum) were proposed in terms of different types and distributions of oxide films and different size ratios of the molten flux to oxide films. Particularly, from a thermodynamic point of view, for the first time, the penetration regime provided concrete evidence that the practical oxide inclusions can be wet by molten flux under ambient fluid of molten aluminum. A spreading model was proposed, according to which ingredients and size parameters of practical solid fluxes can be optimized.

Abstract:Kinds of organic and inorganic soft fluxes were developed, and some contrast experiments about those fluxes were done. The flux that suited to Zn-Al alloy was discovered. Volatile content and erosion rate of the flux were studied. The result shows that the flux can wipe off oxide film of Zn-Al alloy and can also wipe off oxide of solder that formed during soldering. It adds the lubricate between solder and substrate. The residue of flux is little and can be cleaned out easily.

Abstract:Abstract Aluminum and its alloys having lots of advantageous properties are among the most-used metallic materials. So, it is of immense importance to find suitable processes and methods leading to high-quality purified Al melt. In this regard, there are numerous challenges in achieving high purity Al melts, such as its propensity to react with air, oxygen, and water vapor, the presence of a variety of oxide, non-oxide, and solid particle inclusions that lead to the production of pores, cracks, pinholes, and dross, finally adversely influencing the overall quality of the product. The main methods of melt refining are fluxing, floatation, and filtration, but more sophisticated methods have also emerged. The best method for purification can be chosen based on the type of impurities and the desired level of purification. With the industrial development, the need to establish more cost-effective and simpler methods has increased, and in addition, methods should be considered for recycling large volumes of scarp Al parts that contain more impurities. Moreover, achieving high purity melt is also a vital issue for use in specific applications. The present article has been written to discuss the above issues and focus on the study of various methods of aluminum purification.

Effects of Refining Temperature on JDN-I Flux's Purifying A00 Aluminum

Abstract:JDN-I flux is used to purify A00 aluminum alloys under the condition of different refining temperature. From the results some conclusions are drawn that, with temperature is raised, the purifying effects of JDN-I flux becomes worse. The suitable scope of temperature is 690～750℃. And the best temperature is 710℃ or so. Additionally, the conclusion is also drawn that the effects of temperature on melting loss is unclear. At different temperature, melting loss roughly holds below 1%. And the mechanism of Flux's effects is also analysed breafly.

Abstract:A low melting-point glass flux, JDN-II, was developed. The experimental results indicate that JDN-II flux has distinct effects of purification and protection on A356 alloy melt at super-high temperature. When the dosage of the flux is 0.03, the content of hydrogen in every gram of A356 melt is only 2.6 μL/g at 857°C and 0.7 μL/g even at 750°C. The purification mechanism of JDN-II glass flux was also discussed.

Abstract:Protecting flux was used to improve the function of melt thermal treatment (MTT) process. The result shows that the protecting flux can resolve the oxidation problem of high temperature melt in MTT. It can also refine the Si-phase in the alloy. The protecting flux can protect the melt, refine the crystal and remove the impurity at the same time. The research also shows that if the protecting flux is added, MTT can reduce the size of the crystal to the full extent.

Abstract:A new flux which can remove both Fe and non-metallic inclusions in magnesium alloy was introduced.The Fe content of the magnesium alloy can be decreased greatly from 0. 062% to lower than 0. 005% (degree of AZ91D) after being purified by this new flux. The optimum addition of B2O3 in the flux is 0. 58 % by Gaussian Curve Fitting. Corrosion rate was measured after the specimen being immersed in 5 % NaCl solution for 3 d. The resuits show that the corrosion rate of the magnesium alloy after purification by the new flux is only 0.3 mg · cm-2 ·d-1. On the other hand, non-metallic inclusions in the magnesium alloy decrease with increasing addition of JDMJ in the new flux. Average volume fraction of the non-metallic inclusions in the magnesium alloy decreases from 1.52 % to 1.08%, which leads to improvement in the mechanical properties of the magnesium alloy by 30%. The mechanisms of Fe reduction and non-metallic inclusion-removing in magnesium melt by purification with the new flux were also revealed.

Abstract:Various purification methods were explored to eliminate the dissolved hydrogen and nonmetallic inclusions from molten aluminum alloys. A novel rotating impeller head with self-oscillation nozzles or an electromagnetic valve in the gas circuit was used to produce pulse gas currents for the rotary impeller degassing method. Water simulation results show that the size of gas bubbles can be decreased by 10%–20% as compared with the constant gas current mode. By coating ceramic filters or particles with active flux or enamels, composite filters were used to filter the scrap A356 alloy and pure aluminum. Experimental results demonstrate that better filtration efficiency and operation performance can be obtained. Based on numerical calculations, the separation efficiency of inclusions by high frequency magnetic field can be significantly improved by using a hollow cylinder-like separator or utilizing the effects of secondary flow of the melt in a square separator. A multi-stage and multi-media purification platform based on these methods was designed and applied in on-line processing of molten aluminum alloys. Mechanical properties of the processed scrap A356 alloy are greatly improved by the composite purification.
