Abstract:Diamond-WC-based cemented carbide composites were prepared by microwave hot-pressing sintering and microwave cold-pressing sintering. Density and hardness of samples were measured to determine the mechanical properties of the composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were adopted to characterize the microstructure and phase structure. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) was used to evaluate the composition of the samples. The results indicate diamond-WC-based cemented carbide composites with excellent performance could be produced by microwave sintering, and samples fabricated by microwave hot-pressing sintering exhibit higher density and hardness, more homogeneous microstructure and diamond distribution compared to the microwave cold-pressing sintered samples.

Abstract:Metal matrix diamond composites (MMDC) started from the pre-alloyed powders with the addition of different concentration of Ti3AlC2 MAX phase were prepared via microwave assisted sintering (MAS) method. The microstructure of samples was examined by SEM, EDS and XRD characterization methods. The mechanical properties including relative density, abrasive ratio, impact toughness, hardness, elastic modulus and bending strength were also analyzed to investigate the contribution of the additive of Ti3AlC2. The results demonstrate that Ti3AlC2 additive is beneficial for promoting the mechanical properties and the optimized Ti3AlC2 addition concentration is 25 wt %. The enhancement effect of the comprehensive mechanical properties could be due to the in-situ decomposition of Ti3AlC2 induced by diamond and the generated Al to stuff porosity and then conducive to densification of the sintered structure. Simultaneously, Al element reacts with diamond abrasive to produce Al4C3 transition layer on the diamond surface, which improves the bonding force between the diamond and the matrix for the MMDC sample. The advantages of microwave heating and the pre-alloying of raw powder can avoid the graphitization behavior of internal diamond abrasive owning to the relatively low sintering temperature. The potential sintering mechanism of the pre-alloyed diamond composites by the addition of Ti3AlC2 in the microwave field was also discussed.

Abstract:<p>In this work, we fabricated metal-diamond composite material with excellent mechanical properties via pressure-less microwave sintering by using pre-alloyed metallic powder as the raw materials. The elementary substance metallic powder formula was simultaneously sintered as a comparative test. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to analyze the microstructural morphology information of samples. Phase transitions were studied by an X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The hardness, bending strength and relative density of samples were tested to evaluate their mechanical properties. Raman spectroscopy was used to investigate the diamond graphitization. The results show that the formula of pre-alloyed metallic powder exhibited better heating efficiency under the microwave irradiation; in turn, the samples can reach targeted sintering temperature ahead of the elementary substance metallic powder samples. Furthermore, the samples sintered via pre-alloyed powders display excellent mechanical properties; the relative density, hardness and bending strength can reach 98.8%, 101.5 HRB and 1065.9 MPa, respectively. This promotional behavior can be attributed to the pre-alloyed characteristic of raw powders that facilitates the uniform distribution of metal elements and a more thorough alloying reaction even if the sintering temperature is below 900 °C. It is demonstrated that the pressure-less microwave sintering will be feasible in the fabrication of metallic matrix diamond super-hard tool bits by utilizing the pre-alloyed powders as the raw material. The combination of microwave sintering and pre-alloyed powder is expected to provide a new strategy with efficient and low cost for the preparation of super-hard material products.</p>

Abstract:<p>Fused deposition molding and sintering (FDMS) technology has the characteristics of low cost and low damage to diamonds. In order to explore more possibilities of additive manufacturing diamond tools, FDMS technology was considered to manufacture Co-based diamond composites at different temperatures in this paper. Also, specimens of Co-based diamond composites were manufactured under the same sintering process by using the powder hot-pressed sintering technology. And the matrix microstructure and properties of the specimens made by those two different technologies were analyzed and compared. The results show that a lot of porosity defects were developed inside the specimens manufactured by FDMS. This is because of the specific process characteristics of FDMS. Also, the matrix forms a special coating state for diamond particles due to the binder system used in this study, which causes some diamond particles to suffer slight thermal damage. These all will reduce the density and holding ability of the FDMS specimens. However, when the sintering temperature increases from 800 °C to 880 °C, the performance loss of FDMS samples caused by the porosity defects gradually decreases, thereby reducing the performance difference when comparing with the powder hot-pressed sintering specimens. In addition, the matrix structural uniformity of the FDMS specimens is significantly improved during this process, and the fracture feature changes from intergranular fracture to transgranular fracture. But there is still a certain difference in the overall performance of the two kinds of specimens at the optimal sintering temperature. Therefore, the further optimization of FDMS process parameters and binder system is of great significance for the application of FDMS in diamond tools.</p>

Preparation of Diamond/aluminum Composite with Titanium Coating on Diamond Powder by Microwave Technology

Abstract:In this research, the diamond particles were coated with titanium by microwave heating method, then the Ti-coated diamond particles were used as raw material to fabricate the diamond/Al composites by microwave sintering. The result shows that the diamond particles could be covered with a uniform and continuous Ti coating under microwave irradiation, and the best Ti coating was obtained at 810 °C for 1 h. The metallic bond between diamond and Ti was formed to generate the intermediate transition layer of TiC. The diamond/Al composites which used Ti-coated diamond particles as raw material and were fabricated by microwave sintering show high relative density and hardness. The relative density and hardness of the diamond/Al composites increased with the temperature. While the composites were sintered at 710 °C for 1 h, the density could reach 2.855 g·cm−3, and relative density was 92.09%, which shows better microstructures and properties. There is Al3Ti alloy phase in Ti-coated diamond/Al composites, so the Ti-coated diamond can be well combined with the Al matrix, which can further improve the properties of the composites.

Abstract:Depositing strong carbide-forming elements on diamond surface can dramatically improve the interfacial bonding strength between diamond grits and metal matrix. In the present work, investigation on the preparation of Ti-coated diamond particles by microwave heating has been conducted. The morphology, microstructure, and the chemical composition of Ti-coated diamond particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDX). The thickness of Ti coating was measured and the interfacial binding strength between Ti coating and diamond was analyzed. The results show that the surface of the diamond particles could be successfully coated with Ti, forming a uniform and continuous Ti-coated layer. The TiC was found to form between the surface of diamond particles and Ti-coated layer. The amount of TiC as well as the thickness of coating increased with increasing coating temperature, furthermore, the grain size of the coating also grew gradually. The interfacial bonding strength between coating and diamond was found to be best at the temperature of 760 degrees C. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Application of microwave energy for materials processing is emerging as an innovative technology with many advantages over the conventional processing, and the rapid progress in this field suggests that microwave material processing (e.g., microwave and microwave-hydrothermal process) will play an outstanding role in the broad field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This review article gives an up-to-date overview of the current microscopical and physical characterization of the products synthesized by microwave and microwave-hydrothermal process, particularly for oxide nanomaterials because they are indispensable for nanotechnological innovations due to their combinations of infinite variety of structural motifs and properties with manifold morphological features. Basic principles, advantages, and limitations of microwave and microwave-hydrothermal processes are first introduced, and then their recent applications in the synthesis of different classes of functional materials especially for oxide nanomaterials are critically reviewed. Next, the recent progress on the structural and physical characterizations is summarized and discussed. Finally, prospects for future researches within this field are elaborated.

Abstract:14Cr-ODS ferritic alloys were fabricated by microwave sintering and conventional vacuum sintering. The results showed that the sintering time could be reduced and the sintering temperature could be decreased effectively by adoption of microwave sintering. The tensile strength of the alloy microwave sintered at 1250°C and the alloy vacuum sintered at 1350°C were 691.4MPa and 521.5MPa respectively. The superior strength of microwave sintered one would be attributed to finer grain size, which was resulted from the shorter sintering time and lower sintering temperature. The elongation of microwave sintered alloy was worse than that of the vacuum sintering one. Nano-oxide precipitates were dispersed homogeneously in the Fe-based matrix, and their size was mostly ranged from several nm to more than 20nm.

Abstract:Diamonds are considered ideal additives for improving the wear resistance of cemented carbide materials and thus for extending their service life. However, the poor wettability and thermal stability of diamonds limit their effectiveness. To solve this problem, in this study, microwave-evaporation technology, a low-cost and simple approach, was used to prepare a uniform titanium coating on diamond surface with an optimized diamond-to-titanium-hydride ratio of 5:3 and an optimized holding time of 1 h at 760 °C. The TiC interlayer with needle-rod microstructure was observed. The coating could increase the oxidation weight-loss temperature by 152.7 °C. The different steps of the high-temperature ablation process of Ti-coated diamond were also revealed. Then, Ti-coated diamond/WC-Co-based cemented carbide composites with uniform microstructure, good interfacial bonding, and no thermal burning loss of diamond were prepared using microwave hot-press sintering with a temperature of 1050 °C only and a pressure of 40 MPa, leading to good wear resistance. The wear rate of the composites prepared with Ti-coated diamond was 25.7% lower at room temperature and 50.7% lower at 400 °C than that of the uncoated diamond. This approach minimized the thermal damage to diamond since both Ti-coated diamond and the composites were prepared at low temperatures.

Abstract:As an additive manufacturing technology, Fused Deposition Modeling and Sintering (FDMS) technology can give diamond tools some creative structures to be applied in more fields. To explore the influence of diamond parameters on diamond tools manufactured by FDMS, copper-tin-diamond composite samples with different diamond concentrations and particle size were prepared by FDMS technology in this paper. During the study, the morphological characteristics of diamond particles inside the samples during the debinding and sintering process are summarized and the influence of diamond parameters on the mechanical properties and structure of the samples was further explored. These influence laws were also verified by cutting experiments. The results show that most diamond particles are in an incomplete coating state because of the volatilization of the binder. Meanwhile, a higher concentration of diamond will lead to more pores and cavities in the samples; and the cavities can be connected to form a large area of cavity zone by the print layer, thereby resulting in a serious loss in the performance of the samples. On the other hand, a small diamond particle size can lead to agglomeration of particles. Subsequently, this will result in void generation and regional weakening of the holding ability. However, agglomeration and some pores or cavities will increase the wear of the matrix, expose more diamond particles, and finally improve the cutting efficiency of the dicing blades when cutting sapphire crystal. Excessive wear may reduce the life of the diamond tool, but improved of sharpness can be better applied in the field of precision machining.

Abstract:The microwave sintering homogeneity of large and complex shape specimens is analyzed. A new approach enabling the fabrication of complex shapes ceramics via 3D printing and microwave sintering is presented. The use of a dental microwave cavity is shown to enable a substantial level of densification of complex shape components while restricting the grain growth. The homogeneity of the processed samples during microwave sintering is studied by an electromagnetic-thermal-mechanical simulation. The realistic densification behavior, that phenomenologically takes into account the microwave effect, is included in the modeling framework. The simulation indicates the sharp correlation between the microwave field distribution in the cavity, the temperature profile, and the specimen's shape distortion.

Abstract:Microwave-induced electric discharge machining (MV-EDM) is an emerging machining method that can be applied to fine machining of metal materials. A feasibility analysis of the application of MV-EDM to sharpen diamond grinding tools was conducted in this study. A multiphysical simulation model for sharpening using MV-EDM was established, and MV-EDM sharpening experiments and measurements were performed to verify the accuracy of the simulation model. It was found that MV-EDM can effectively improve the protrusion height h p and does not result in severe graphitization of diamond grains under appropriate conditions. Under the conditions of a microwave power of 1 kW and a gap scale d of 0.1 mm, the h p of the diamond grain increased to 91 μm with a complete diamond crystal shape and slight graphitization. In addition, it was discovered that the gap scale d and initial protrusion height h 0 had a significant effect on the protrusion height h p and the graphitization of the diamond grains. After verification, the accuracy of the simulation model for calculating the protrusion height of diamond grains was controlled within a range of ±15 μm. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for the industrial application of MV-EDM to sharpening.

Abstract:Studies in the last decade suggest that microwave energy may have a unique ability to influence chemical processes.These include chemical and materials syntheses as well as separations.Specifically,recent studies have documented a significantly reduced time for mixed oxide nanoparticles and mesoporous molecular sieves by employing microwave energy.By reducing the times by over an order of magnitude,continuous production would be possible to replace batch synthesis.This lowering of the cost would make more nanoscale materials readily available for many chemical,environmental,and biological applications.

Abstract:Microwave processes have been rapidly developed for the last two decades in many areas, but the application of microwave in metallurgical processes is just at the initial stage. This paper presents a review on the research and development results of microwave technology applied in mineral treatment, material preparing process and metal recovery operations such as heating, comminution, carbothermic reduction of oxide mineral, leaching and some of metallurgical waste treatments. Despite in this area a significant number of research studies have been carried out and many results obtained, which exhibits a lot of advantages in metallurgical processes. The mechanism of interaction of microwave with minerals and materials and understanding of some phenomena occurring in a microwave-assisted process are still not explained clearly, so that more investigation will be needed in the future. The conversion efficiency of microwave energy, high power microwave generator and designing efficient reactor are key problems to be overcome for improving industrial applications.

Abstract:Diamond films possess many remarkable properties. Among the various techniques to deposit diamond films,high power microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition （MPCVD） method has the advantages of high density plasma, good controllability and clean environment free from electrode material contamination. Therefore, MPCVD has remains the primary technique useful for depositing high quality diamond films. Western countries have developed abilities to deposit high quality diamond fihns by using high power MPCVD techniques. In contrast, slow development in high power MPCVD apparatus has remained a main obstacle for China to develop its ability to produce high quality diamond films material. In this article, we first review the evolution of high power MPCVD diamond films deposition techniques both abroad and at home. Then, we will present new results of our recent effort to develop high power MPCVD diamond films deposition techniques.

The continuing fall in the price of synthetic diamond as production volumes increase provides a strong incentive for tooling companies to reduce the cost of matrix materials and of their manufacturing processes, with an accompanying need for research in these areas. Diamond wires for the cutting of granite and other rock continues to grow in application and provides another focus for materials and technology advances.
