Abstract:Customer demands for quieter centrifugal fans in the industry have brought their noise to the forefront. It is found that dipole sources on the surfaces of the rotating impeller and volute are the main acoustic noise sources. The volute effect is seen to have a significant influence on the radiation characters of the fan, although this is frequently ignored by previous studies. Hence, the indirect boundary element method (IBEM) is employed to study the noise of an industrial forward-curved centrifugal fan and to take the effect of volute reflection and scattering of the sound wave into consideration. A large eddy simulation (LES) is used to gain reliable pressure fluctuations on the surfaces of volute and rotating blades. Then the FW-H equation and Lowson equation are applied to calculate the dipole sources on the surfaces of the volute and the blades respectively. The predicted aerodynamic noise of the fan with and without the volute is compared to experiment. The results indicate that the pressure fluctuations on the volute surfaces, especially on the tongue surface, are the main dipole source. It is also found that the application of IBEM can improve the prediction accuracy greatly, especially for the blade passing frequency and its higher harmonics.

Abstract:Conventional microenvironment control systems of a museum display case generally use mechanical fans which produce great noise and vibration for heat dissipation of semiconductor air-conditioning units. Solid-state fans (ionic wind) operate with no moving parts and can overcome noise and vibration issues of a microenvironment control system. In this study, a multi-electrode mathematical and physical model of wire–plate solid-state fans was developed, and its performance has been analysed in depth. Simulation results indicate that there is an optimal distance between discharge electrodes (d), which corresponds to the largest average wind velocity at the exit of the simulation area (ua). Under the same power consumption, ua and the vertical height from a discharge electrode to a collecting electrode (H) exhibit a monotonically increasing relationship. Similarly, ua and the radius of a discharge electrode (r) show a monotonically decreasing relationship. In addition, a manufactured solid-state fan with an average wind velocity of 1.48 m·s−1 shows a noise intensity of 4.3 dB(A), which is considerably lower than that of a mechanical fan, with the same power consumption. These positive results suggest that ultra-quiet microenvironment control technologies of a museum display case can be potentially developed in the near future.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation of rotating source localization to identify the axial fan noise with high spatial resolution methods. It exploits the on time-domain de-Doppler, and sparsity-based inversion and the convolution model to approximate the power propagation model of the rotating source. This work is also an extension of the previous paper of authors. But the focus of this study is the experimental investigation and application of actual data. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, a vortex generator is attached to the fan blade, creating discontinuities in the blade to simulate axial fan blade defects (cracks, holes, dust accumulations, etc.). The experimental data are shared as a data benchmark to promote further studies in the field of rotating acoustic localization. Compared with the state-of-the-art rotating Beamforming method (ROSI), the acoustic imaging results at various working frequencies for three different axial fans with different rotating speeds (RPM) are accurately identified and sparsely distributed. In addition, the power propagation model derived in the previous paper can be interpreted by a convolutional approximation model in this paper, and this technique can help to reduce the computational costs of proposed methods for real applications. The accuracy of the aerodynamic noise positions estimated by the proposed method are further proved to match well with the aerodynamic mechanism.

Abstract:Turbofan engines are one of the most popular propulsion systems used in commercial aircraft due to their high thrust and good fuel efficiency. To reduce noise generated from turbofan engines-powered aircraft, a number of control approaches have been developed. The dominant noise sources include the fan and the high-speed ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ jet. In engineering applications, the noise control approaches include: 1) active control, 2) geometric shape optimization, and 3) passive control (including acoustic boundary control). Because they are considered the most reliable and effective noise reduction methods, the geometric shape optimization and passive control are preferable by the engine manufacturers. In this work, we briefly overview the noise reduction technologies that have great potential to be applied or implemented on turbofan engines. The research and development progress made on the active control, passive control, and geometric shape optimization are reviewed and discussed, aiming to provide an useful guidance on next-generation low-noise turbofan engines. The fundamental noise damping mechanisms of thermos-viscous and vortex shedding are finally overviewed via cases studies.

Abstract:Blade passing frequency (BPF) noise is the dominating component of the flow induced noise of centrifugal fans. The numerical methods for BPF noise prediction, based on the computational aeroacoustics (CAA), have been published for decades. However, there are a couple of challenges for accurately predicting noise for industrial centrifugal fans. The first arises from the fact that the free field hypothesis, adopted in the numerical model, has not yet been carefully studied. The second challenge stems from the current criteria for which the prediction results are compared to the measurement data. Because the test conditions do not always satisfy the requirements of the numerical model, inaccurate predictions occasionally resulted. Therefore, since the prediction results may deviate largely from the test data, the applicability of these methods is severely limited.
Improving Active Control of Fan Noise with Automatic Spectral Reshaping for Reference Signal

Abstract:In this paper, an improved algorithm for active control of fan noise is proposed. The main idea behind this work is to reshape the frequency components of the reference signal using the information from the unwanted fan noise. In the algorithm, the reflection coefficients of linear prediction (LP) based on lattice structure are obtained from the noise. The coefficients are used to build an autoregressive (AR) model, which is applied to the reference signal to improve the correlation between the optimized reference signal and the noise. This method of spectral reshaping for reference signal (SRRS) is carried out automatically by an online adaptive process. The SRRS improves the control performance noticeably. The algorithm has a fast convergence rate and high stability with a tolerant increase in computational complexity. It is implemented to reduce the noise from a real fan on a digital signal processor (DSP) platform.

Abstract:The high aerodynamic noise induced by automotive air conditioning systems has important effects on the ride comfort, and the centrifugal fan is the largest noise source in these systems. It is very important to reduce the aerodynamic noise generated by the centrifugal fan. The flow field and the sound field on the whole centrifugal fan configuration have been carried out using the computational fluid dynamics. Simulation results show that the sound pressure level near the outlet of the centrifugal fan is too high. Based on the relationship between flow characteristics and the aerodynamic noise, four parameters of the centrifugal fan, i.e., impeller blade’s outlet angle θ, volute tongue’s gap t, collector inclination angle β, and rotating speed n, were selected as design variables and optimized using response surface methodology. While keeping the function of flow rate unchanged, the peak noise level is reduced by 8 dB or 10.8%. The noise level is satisfactorily reduced.

Abstract:The forward-curved multi-blade centrifugal fan is widely used in the ventilation and household appliance industries with limited space due to its small size factor, high pressure coefficient, and large outlet flow coefficient. Conventional centrifugal fan structural designs rely on empirical data, resulting in drawbacks during usage such as low airflow velocity, high noise levels, and high energy consumption. In order to optimize fan structure, enhance aerodynamic performance, and seek new, effective approaches for energy efficiency and emissions reduction, this paper focuses on a combined design method that integrates scroll line design with aerodynamic performance and noise control. The goal is to propose a noise prediction and analysis method for multi-blade centrifugal fans, addressing the design contradiction between optimal fan functionality and minimal noise within limited design dimensions. The dynamic radial basis function method is introduced to investigate the geometric parameters of the scroll line, utilizing coherence analysis to identify the reasons for insufficient aerodynamic performance and noise reduction measures. Through the research, it is found that unreasonable design leads to a large turbulent vortex region within the blade passage and internal flow field, particularly involving circulation and backflow, which significantly reduces the fan's aerodynamic performance and operational efficiency. The design incorporates a composite scroll with a logarithmic spiral and circular arc integrated into one, and algorithm-based optimization of the scroll tongue, facilitating the transition of turbulence at the scroll outlet and the gap between the scroll tongue and impeller. Numerical results show an increase in airflow of 3.04 m3/min and a noise reduction of 3.79%. This indicates that the composite scroll design with a logarithmic spiral plays a dominant role in accelerating the aerodynamic performance of the scroll and reducing noise radiation.

Abstract:This paper optimized the design of the cooling fans of a light-duty diesel engine through numerical simulation. Using Fluent as a platform, a detailed Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to simulate both the aerodynamic and the acoustics performance. The model developed was validated against experimental data obtained in this research. The validated model was then used to optimize the design of the cooling fan aiming to minimize the operation noise. With the guarantee of cooling performances, the aerodynamic noise of the two fans has been successfully reduced.

Abstract:We are now at a point where airframes, aeroengines and their integration require radical changes to meet increasingly aggressive environmental targets. Generally, fan noise emitted from rotor-stator assemblies would be one of the dominant noise sources for modern and next-generation aircraft engines, which shall direct most research interest into fans in the coming decade and, therefore, the associated measurement constitutes the main focus of the current review. Amongst various approaches, an experimental study of fan noise is usually efficient and of high-fidelity, but the associated cost is expensive. Moreover, the design of a test would be time-consuming due to the adequate choice of testing methods with the adaption to the testing case and rig. In addition, in most cases the experimental setup requires some sort of optimization to achieve high measurement accuracy. This article provides a contemporary review of the most well-known and state-of-the-art testing methods with the focus on fan noise problems. More specifically, the acoustic mode detection and noise source reconstruction methods are most relevant to the understanding of noise generation mechanism and propagating characteristics, which are useful for further noise reduction studies, and therefore are extensively reviewed in this article. As timely guidance to potential interested readers, this paper also provides an overview of recent developments based on the compressive sensing and machine learning techniques that have enabled disruptive innovations by fundamentally changing the testing practices of conventional measurement methods, thus constituting the continued research direction for next-generation aeroengines.

Abstract:The prediction accuracy of turbomachinery aerodynamic noise, particularly in relation to broadband noise with uncertain factors, has long been a challenging issue. Previous studies have not fully comprehended the factors influencing its prediction accuracy, lacking an objective and comprehensive evaluation method. An improved approach combining orthogonal experiment design and principal component analysis is employed to address these limitations. The evaluation method expands the noise metrics and provides a comprehensive assessment of the accuracy of numerical simulation for aerodynamic noise. The evaluation method is utilized to optimize and quantitatively analyze the impact of the refinement size of the core area on noise prediction for single-stage axial fans. Subsequently, the three metrics, namely, Z1, Z2, and broadband noise Z3, are integrated using PCA to form a new integrated optimal metric Ztotal. The influence of different refinement sizes, particularly on Ztotal, is quantitatively examined. The findings reveal that the mesh size of the stator wake (D area) exhibits the most significant influence on noise prediction accuracy, with a calculated weight of 81.3% on noise accuracy. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation is conducted on the influence of turbulence models and the wall Y+ value on aerodynamic noise. Detached-eddy simulation and large eddy simulation demonstrate effective capabilities in simulating both upstream and downstream turbulent flow characteristics of the stator, enabling accurate prediction of broadband noise. This study presents a set of numerical simulation schemes that achieve precise prediction of turbomachinery aerodynamic noise.

Abstract:A statistical model was established in this article for predicting the broadband turbulent noise of axial flow fans. First, an integral formula was deduced based on the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equations for the purpose of calculating the sound power spectrum of aeroacoustic sources with low rotating speed. The auto-correlation spectrum of the fluctuating pressure on the fan blades was modeled by a two-section exponential function. The characteristic aerodynamic parameters, such as boundary layer thickness, external flow velocity, wall shear stress, and average static pressure gradient on blade surfaces, were obtained by solving the steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and used to normalize the auto-correlation spectrum. Then, the unknown coefficients in the exponential function were determined by fitting the experimental noise spectra for two typical and commercially available axial flow cooling fans. Finally, under the conditions of retaining the similar aerodynamic performances of the two baseline fans, a new fan design was developed and optimized using this method, of which the overall noise level was 2 dB lower than the quieter of the two baseline fans. The predicted noise spectra for all three fans agreed very well with the experimental data.
Ducted Fan Noise Control by Turbulence Grids for Drones

Abstract:A small ducted fan with a rotor-stator assembly is being tested in an anechoic chamber at Peking University. To attenuate fan noise, turbulence grids have been inserted before the rotor to eliminate large-scale ingested flow structures and, therefore, to minimize the flow interactions between the rotors and stators. Several different grids with various geometry and solidity configurations have been considered in the tests. To demonstrate the proposed noise control method, both near-field in-duct on-surface microphones and far-field microphones are used to measure acoustic performance. In addition, a microphone array is deployed to acoustic images at several working conditions. The corresponding thrust performance, with and without the grids in between the rotors and stators, is being measured simultaneously. The possible fluid mechanics is presumably caused by the reduced strength of ingested turbulence structures. More results help to reveal this physical understanding will be given in the final manuscript. Through this work, we hope to investigate a new strategy that could possibly reduce UAV fan noise at several representative working conditions.
Aeroacoustic prediction for cooling fan using convolution quadrature boundary element method

Abstract:A computational method to predict the aeroacoustic sound produced by the interaction between fluid and moving body is developed, then applied to the problem of aerodynamic noise radiation from an engine cooling fan. The flow field is computed using the viscous vortex method with a simplified diffusion algorithm, followed by a noise sources extraction within the turbulent region, based on the vortex sound model. Then, the sound field is determined using a Convolution Quadrature Boundary Element Method, accounting for the scattering effect from solid surface. With the help of Convolution Quadrature Method, time-stepping Boundary Element procedure can be established circumventing the requisite for time-dependent fundamental solution. Fast Multipole Method is also adopted to improve computational efficiency. It is found that the results of flow field calculation are close to those obtained from measurement. The predicted noise levels at the microphone position are in qualitative agreement with the measured. The comparison of computation time also shows that the proposed method can effectively predict the fluid-blade interaction noise.

Abstract:The fan noise in the train electric traction system contributes to the main noise of the train, affecting the comfort of the passengers. The prediction of fan noise can serve as a foundation for the design and fault diagnosis of the fan in the train electric traction system as well as noise reduction. This paper proposes a prediction model based on multiple regression analysis and a double-layer fuzzy neural network (MRA-2LFNN). After the multiple regression analysis of the train electric traction system fan noise is performed to determine the prediction input, a fuzzy neural network is used to predict the fan noise. Afterward, further analysis of noise influencing factors is presented based on the experimental results, and the possibility of the fan optimal design is discussed. This method can make accurate predictions using a small sample of fan noise data, reducing the need for data samples and lowering costs. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve better prediction results using the small sample dataset by training and verifying the actual train electric traction system fan noise data, and the average prediction accuracy rate is 94.15%, After discussion, when the number of fan blades is 16, the train electric traction system exhibits improved noise performance.

Abstract:Using the finite volume CFD software FLUENT, one fan was studied at a given flow rate (1.5m3/min) for three different operational rotating speeds : 2,000, 2,350 and 2,700 rpm. The turbulent air flow analysis predicts the acoustic behavior of the fan. The best fan operating window, i.e. the one giving the best ratio between noise emissions and cooling performance, can then be determined. The broadband noise acoustic model is used. As the computation is steady state, a simple Multiple Reference Frame model (MRF, also known as stationary rotor approach) is used to represent the fan. This approach is able to capture the effects of the flow non-uniformity at the fan inlet together with their impact on the fan performance. Furthermore, it is not requiring a fan curve as an input to the model. When compared to the available catalog data the simulation results show promising qualitative agreement that may be used for fan design and selection purposes.
