Abstract:Customer demands for quieter centrifugal fans in the industry have brought their noise to the forefront. It is found that dipole sources on the surfaces of the rotating impeller and volute are the main acoustic noise sources. The volute effect is seen to have a significant influence on the radiation characters of the fan, although this is frequently ignored by previous studies. Hence, the indirect boundary element method (IBEM) is employed to study the noise of an industrial forward-curved centrifugal fan and to take the effect of volute reflection and scattering of the sound wave into consideration. A large eddy simulation (LES) is used to gain reliable pressure fluctuations on the surfaces of volute and rotating blades. Then the FW-H equation and Lowson equation are applied to calculate the dipole sources on the surfaces of the volute and the blades respectively. The predicted aerodynamic noise of the fan with and without the volute is compared to experiment. The results indicate that the pressure fluctuations on the volute surfaces, especially on the tongue surface, are the main dipole source. It is also found that the application of IBEM can improve the prediction accuracy greatly, especially for the blade passing frequency and its higher harmonics.
Aeroacoustic simulation of a cross-flow fan using lattice Boltzmann method with a RANS model

Abstract:The present study developed an unsteady RANS approach based on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), which can perform direct aeroacoustic simulations of low-speed fans at lower computational cost compared with the conventional LBM-LES approach. In this method, the k-ω turbulence model is incorporated into the LBM flow solver, where the transport equations of k and ω are also computed by the lattice Boltzmann method, similar to the Navier-Stokes equations. In addition, moving boundaries such as fan rotors are considered by a direct-forcing immersed boundary method. This numerical method was validated in a two-dimensional simulation of a cross-flow fan. As a result, the simulation was able to capture an eccentric vortex structure in the rotor, and the pressure rise by the work of the rotor can be reproduced. Also, the peak sound of the blade passing frequency can be successfully predicted by the present method. Furthermore, the simulation results showed that the peak sound is generated by the interaction between the rotor blade and the flow around the tongue part of the casing.

Abstract:The high aerodynamic noise induced by automotive air conditioning systems has important effects on the ride comfort, and the centrifugal fan is the largest noise source in these systems. It is very important to reduce the aerodynamic noise generated by the centrifugal fan. The flow field and the sound field on the whole centrifugal fan configuration have been carried out using the computational fluid dynamics. Simulation results show that the sound pressure level near the outlet of the centrifugal fan is too high. Based on the relationship between flow characteristics and the aerodynamic noise, four parameters of the centrifugal fan, i.e., impeller blade’s outlet angle θ, volute tongue’s gap t, collector inclination angle β, and rotating speed n, were selected as design variables and optimized using response surface methodology. While keeping the function of flow rate unchanged, the peak noise level is reduced by 8 dB or 10.8%. The noise level is satisfactorily reduced.

Abstract:International Journal of Aeroacoustics, Ahead of Print. The investigation into aerodynamic noise arising from rotating surfaces bears significant practical implications. Among these, engine cooling fans have persistently been identified as primary contributors to vehicle noise. This study aims to provide a deeper comprehension of the complex unsteady flow dynamics surrounding an automotive cooling fan and its consequential impact on the generation of aerodynamic noise. Prediction of sound generated from fluid flow, despite its difficulty, can be simulated using modern numerical techniques and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This research undertakes both numerical and experimental investigations. The experiment involves evaluating fan pressure against mass flow rate at 1500 rpm, while aerodynamic noise assessment transpires at two rotational speeds of 1500 rpm and 2500 rpm. Empirical sound pressure level data of the fan is meticulously captured using the requisite measurement apparatus. In addition, numerical investigations of the aerodynamic noise of an automotive cooling fan based on computational fluid dynamics and computational aeroacoustic (CAA) method have been performed. Initially, a steady-state aerodynamic simulation is carried out, followed by the simulation of the flow field through the application of the improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) formulation. The pressure rise of the fan versus the mass flow rate is obtained. The satisfactory concurrence observed between the simulation outcomes derived from the numerical method and the experimental dataset stands as notable validation. For the aeroacoustic computation, the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings model is invoked to deduce sound pressure levels at specific flow points. The broadband noise sources model is also used to obtain the sound power level on the blade surface. Conclusively, it emerges that maximal noise manifestation occurs at a 90° degree angle, corresponding to the hub's frontal orientation, with discernible dominance of tonal noise within lower frequency ranges (sub-1000 Hz).

Abstract:Using the finite volume CFD software FLUENT, one fan was studied at a given flow rate (1.5m3/min) for three different operational rotating speeds : 2,000, 2,350 and 2,700 rpm. The turbulent air flow analysis predicts the acoustic behavior of the fan. The best fan operating window, i.e. the one giving the best ratio between noise emissions and cooling performance, can then be determined. The broadband noise acoustic model is used. As the computation is steady state, a simple Multiple Reference Frame model (MRF, also known as stationary rotor approach) is used to represent the fan. This approach is able to capture the effects of the flow non-uniformity at the fan inlet together with their impact on the fan performance. Furthermore, it is not requiring a fan curve as an input to the model. When compared to the available catalog data the simulation results show promising qualitative agreement that may be used for fan design and selection purposes.

Abstract:A statistical model was established in this article for predicting the broadband turbulent noise of axial flow fans. First, an integral formula was deduced based on the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equations for the purpose of calculating the sound power spectrum of aeroacoustic sources with low rotating speed. The auto-correlation spectrum of the fluctuating pressure on the fan blades was modeled by a two-section exponential function. The characteristic aerodynamic parameters, such as boundary layer thickness, external flow velocity, wall shear stress, and average static pressure gradient on blade surfaces, were obtained by solving the steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and used to normalize the auto-correlation spectrum. Then, the unknown coefficients in the exponential function were determined by fitting the experimental noise spectra for two typical and commercially available axial flow cooling fans. Finally, under the conditions of retaining the similar aerodynamic performances of the two baseline fans, a new fan design was developed and optimized using this method, of which the overall noise level was 2 dB lower than the quieter of the two baseline fans. The predicted noise spectra for all three fans agreed very well with the experimental data.

Abstract:The flow field in a cross flow fan was simulated by solving the 2-D unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The calculated pressure fluctuations of the blades, the vortex wall, and the rear wall were then used as noise sources to calculate the sound field. The Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation was employed to predict the noise field caused by these sources. The predictions show that the rear wall and the vortex wall sources contribute significantly to the total noise and that both the predicted aerodynamic performance and noise agree well with the experimental results.

Abstract:Low-speed axial cooling fans are frequently used to manage engine temperature by ensuring that adequate quantities of air pass through heat exchangers, even at low vehicle speeds or in the idle condition. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the unsteady flow behavior around an automotive axial cooling fan with seven blades and its impact on the aerodynamic noise generation. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) near the near-field region and the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkinbygs (FW-H) method were performed to analyze the flow characteristics around the fan and predict the aerodynamic noise emitted from the fan under a constant rotational speed of 2100 rpm. The simulation results for the velocity distributions and aerodynamic noise were compared with the experimental data measured by single hot-wire probe and in a dead-sound room. The results showed a comparatively good agreement upstream and downstream from the fan and at two different receivers of 0.5 m and 1.0 m. When the fan was rotating, a strong tonal noise numerically existed near the leading edge of the blades at the tip and amounted to 110 dB sound pressure level (SPL) caused by the increasing angles of attack with the increasing radial velocity near the ring, which caused the entire air foil to emit a low-frequency noise. Furthermore, the different SPL decay characteristics of approximately 5 dB in the near-field region and 6 dB in the far-field region were observed each time the distance from the fan doubles. The findings of this research can provide important insights into the design of axial fans with low noise and high performance.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation of rotating source localization to identify the axial fan noise with high spatial resolution methods. It exploits the on time-domain de-Doppler, and sparsity-based inversion and the convolution model to approximate the power propagation model of the rotating source. This work is also an extension of the previous paper of authors. But the focus of this study is the experimental investigation and application of actual data. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, a vortex generator is attached to the fan blade, creating discontinuities in the blade to simulate axial fan blade defects (cracks, holes, dust accumulations, etc.). The experimental data are shared as a data benchmark to promote further studies in the field of rotating acoustic localization. Compared with the state-of-the-art rotating Beamforming method (ROSI), the acoustic imaging results at various working frequencies for three different axial fans with different rotating speeds (RPM) are accurately identified and sparsely distributed. In addition, the power propagation model derived in the previous paper can be interpreted by a convolutional approximation model in this paper, and this technique can help to reduce the computational costs of proposed methods for real applications. The accuracy of the aerodynamic noise positions estimated by the proposed method are further proved to match well with the aerodynamic mechanism.

Abstract:The cooling fan is one of the important noise sources for new energy vehicles, and the research on its aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics is of great help to improve the noise, vibration and harshness performance of new energy vehicles. However, most of these studies focus on the impeller, and little consideration has been given to the study of the shroud. Based on the coupling calculation method of large eddy simulation and the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings acoustics model, the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics in a cooling fan with the shroud are investigated at flow rates from 0.623 kg/s to 1.019 kg/s (where 0.865 kg/s is the flow rate corresponding to the best efficiency point). The accuracy of numerical simulation results is verified by the grid independence verification and the comparison of experimental data. Research shows that several large-scale vortex structures are observed in the clearance between the impeller and the shroud. The maximum peak-to-peak values of pressure fluctuation at different flow rates occur in the intermediate section or outlet section of the shroud. Although the shroud contributes relatively less to the far field noise, its different distribution may change the position of the maximum sound pressure level. The dominant frequency of pressure fluctuation equals the blade passage frequency (BPF) and the maximum SPL is around the BPF, both of which are independent of flow rates. The maximum SPL and the amplitude of the dominant frequency decrease as the flow rate increases.

Abstract:The forward-curved multi-blade centrifugal fan is widely used in the ventilation and household appliance industries with limited space due to its small size factor, high pressure coefficient, and large outlet flow coefficient. Conventional centrifugal fan structural designs rely on empirical data, resulting in drawbacks during usage such as low airflow velocity, high noise levels, and high energy consumption. In order to optimize fan structure, enhance aerodynamic performance, and seek new, effective approaches for energy efficiency and emissions reduction, this paper focuses on a combined design method that integrates scroll line design with aerodynamic performance and noise control. The goal is to propose a noise prediction and analysis method for multi-blade centrifugal fans, addressing the design contradiction between optimal fan functionality and minimal noise within limited design dimensions. The dynamic radial basis function method is introduced to investigate the geometric parameters of the scroll line, utilizing coherence analysis to identify the reasons for insufficient aerodynamic performance and noise reduction measures. Through the research, it is found that unreasonable design leads to a large turbulent vortex region within the blade passage and internal flow field, particularly involving circulation and backflow, which significantly reduces the fan's aerodynamic performance and operational efficiency. The design incorporates a composite scroll with a logarithmic spiral and circular arc integrated into one, and algorithm-based optimization of the scroll tongue, facilitating the transition of turbulence at the scroll outlet and the gap between the scroll tongue and impeller. Numerical results show an increase in airflow of 3.04 m3/min and a noise reduction of 3.79%. This indicates that the composite scroll design with a logarithmic spiral plays a dominant role in accelerating the aerodynamic performance of the scroll and reducing noise radiation.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the capability of the immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) in simulating the broadband sound generated from a cross-flow fan. The present method is based on the lattice Boltzmann equation with the D3Q27 particle velocity model, and the cascaded collision operator was used to stably simulate high-Reynolds-number flows. Furthermore, the direct-forcing approach was used to consider rotating blades in the regular lattice. To capture turbulence eddies in the rotor, we used a high-resolution grid that contained approximately 340 million nodes. The simulation successfully captured the fundamental flow features of the cross-flow fan such as the eccentric vortex, and the simulation results were consistent with the experimental results in terms of the time-averaged velocity distribution at the outlet of the fan. In addition, by resolving turbulent eddies in the impeller, the simulation successfully predicted the broadband sound spectrum in the frequency range of 2 kHz or less.

Abstract:The fan is one of the major noise sources of an air conditioner. Because of the presence of other components in the fan assembly, such as the bell-mouth, outlet grille and compressor chamber, the ingested and discharged flow fields around the fan impellers are distinctly different from those in a free field. Therefore, the noise generation mechanisms become much more difficult to analyze and model. This paper concentrates on understanding the generation mechanism and evaluating the noise in the fan system of a split-type air conditioner. Acoustic measurements were performed to analyze noise characteristics and to evaluate the effect of each component. Large eddy simulation was applied to predict detailed flow fields. Accordingly, unsteady flow data were fed into an acoustic analogy model to evaluate radiated sound. The predicted discrete frequency noise and sound spectrum proved that computation is accurate compared to measurement.

Abstract:Noise level of AC (Air-Conditioner) outdoor unit fan system has always been receiving much concern. It involves both aerodynamic noise and vibroacoustic noise. But most previous studies have been focused on aeroacoustics, and less attention is paid to the latter.The objective of present study is to identify the influential factors of vibroacoustic noise and quantify its contribution to the overall noise level of the fan system. A numerical approach has been developed for predicting the flow-induced fan casing vibration and noise radiation. A fluid-solid-sound unidirectional coupling technique is used to transfer the unsteady loading to the structure, and the results arising from structural vibration analysis are used as sound radiation boundary conditions. Unsteady fan flow is solved by Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method. Then, the fluid force produced by the fluctuating pressure component acting on the inner casing surfaces is obtained, and it is used as external excitation in the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model of the casing structure. Further, harmonic response analysis is conducted and the obtained results are used to calculate sound radiation through Indirect Boundary Element Method (IBEM), while the displacement amplitude obtained in structural analysis is used as boundary condition.Experimental tests are conducted respectively on fan aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance, and casing vibration. The numerical approach is partially validated by the experimental data. The validated models are used to predict the vibroacoustic noise, based on which, a quantitative evaluation of its contribution to overall sound level is conducted.Copyright © 2014 by ASME

Aeroacoustic Prediction Based on Large-Eddy Simulation and the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings Equation

Abstract:Abstract A hybrid noise computation method is presented in this paper. Large-eddy simulation with wall-model equation is proposed to compute the flow field. With a stress-balanced wall-model equation, the near-wall computation cost of large eddy simulation was effectively reduced. The instantaneous flow variables obtained by the large-eddy simulation were used to compute the noise source terms of the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings equation. The present method was investigated with two test cases: a single cylinder at Re = 10,000 and a rod-airfoil at Re = 480,000. The flow quantities and aeroacoustic characteristics were compared with the reference data. The mean velocity profiles and spectra of the flow fluctuations were consistent with data from the literature. When compared with the reference data, the noise computation error was less than 3 dB. The computation results demonstrate the present wall-modeled large eddy simulation is efficient for the noise computation of complex vortex shedding flows.

Abstract:A new high‐accuracy‐boundary‐recognition algorithm based on Green's formula is proposed to deal with complex curved geometry. A series of different difference schemes are used to solve Reynolds stress tensor of turbulence models and the related improvements based on Lattice Boltzmann method are developed to adapt to the airfoil noise direct simulation with multi‐level Cartesian grid at middle‐high Reynolds number. Finally, the direct far‐field acoustics simulations of cylinder and airfoil have also been successfully predicted. Being a direct computational aeroacoustics method, Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has great potential and broad application perspective in the field of numerical simulation of aerodynamic noise due to its low dispersion and low dissipation. A series of numerical algorithms and the related improvements based on the standard LBM method are proposed and developed in this paper to adapt to the airfoil noise calculation with complex grid at middle‐high Reynolds number. First, a new mathematical‐boundary‐recognition algorithm based on Green's formula is proposed to deal with complex curved geometric models, which is validated by three‐element airfoil 30P30N benchmark. Then, in order to reduce grid redundancy and improve computing efficiency, the grid refinement technique of domain decomposition model (DDM) is adopted and also improved, which is verified by calculating the flow and sound fields around 2D and 3D cylinders at Reynolds number equal to 90,000. Finally, three different LES turbulence models are combined with the standard MRT‐LBM method, where different finite difference schemes are used to solve Reynolds stress tensor which is different from the traditional one. Through the direct acoustic numerical simulation of NACA0012 airfoil at Reynolds number equal to 200,000, the effects of Smagorinsky models and Wall‐adapting local eddy‐viscosity (WALE) model on aerodynamic noise prediction are compared and analyzed. Overall, the proposed methodology is shown to be appropriate for predicting the aerodynamic noise at low Mach number and can successfully simulate the generation and propagation of far field acoustics.

Abstract:The prediction accuracy of turbomachinery aerodynamic noise, particularly in relation to broadband noise with uncertain factors, has long been a challenging issue. Previous studies have not fully comprehended the factors influencing its prediction accuracy, lacking an objective and comprehensive evaluation method. An improved approach combining orthogonal experiment design and principal component analysis is employed to address these limitations. The evaluation method expands the noise metrics and provides a comprehensive assessment of the accuracy of numerical simulation for aerodynamic noise. The evaluation method is utilized to optimize and quantitatively analyze the impact of the refinement size of the core area on noise prediction for single-stage axial fans. Subsequently, the three metrics, namely, Z1, Z2, and broadband noise Z3, are integrated using PCA to form a new integrated optimal metric Ztotal. The influence of different refinement sizes, particularly on Ztotal, is quantitatively examined. The findings reveal that the mesh size of the stator wake (D area) exhibits the most significant influence on noise prediction accuracy, with a calculated weight of 81.3% on noise accuracy. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation is conducted on the influence of turbulence models and the wall Y+ value on aerodynamic noise. Detached-eddy simulation and large eddy simulation demonstrate effective capabilities in simulating both upstream and downstream turbulent flow characteristics of the stator, enabling accurate prediction of broadband noise. This study presents a set of numerical simulation schemes that achieve precise prediction of turbomachinery aerodynamic noise.

Abstract:Blade passing frequency (BPF) noise is the dominating component of the flow induced noise of centrifugal fans. The numerical methods for BPF noise prediction, based on the computational aeroacoustics (CAA), have been published for decades. However, there are a couple of challenges for accurately predicting noise for industrial centrifugal fans. The first arises from the fact that the free field hypothesis, adopted in the numerical model, has not yet been carefully studied. The second challenge stems from the current criteria for which the prediction results are compared to the measurement data. Because the test conditions do not always satisfy the requirements of the numerical model, inaccurate predictions occasionally resulted. Abstract:In this paper, the aerodynamic noise of a centrifugal fan with an eccentric impeller is investigated and analyzed by adopting a hybrid method combining detached-eddy simulation and the acoustic finite element method (FEM). The impeller-eccentric effect of high-speed centrifugal fans, frequently ignored in theoretical studies, is objective in practical engineering applications owing to machining and installation errors, which have a significant influence on flow characteristics and subsequently noise characteristics. An impeller-whirling model combined with the sliding mesh method is introduced to obtain the actual flow with an eccentric impeller. First, the internal flow field handled with different eccentricities is investigated. The total pressure and internal efficiency decline, and the flow field near the leading edge shows intense unsteadiness, inducing a rise in the pressure fluctuation amplitude at the rotating frequency (RF) in both impeller flow passage and volute domain. Second, the variational formulation of Lighthill's analogy is implemented by acoustic FEM to better account for the interaction between the solid surface and aerodynamic sound, capturing a contribution by turbulence noise at the second RF. Under eccentric conditions, the sound source intensity shows a circumferential non-uniform distribution in a similar region to the flow field. The calculated sound pressure level captures the variation in the experimental result, which shows an obvious rise at RF induced by the impeller-eccentric effect. The characteristics of the noise spectrum and sound directivity change significantly, and the overall sound pressure level rises with the increase in eccentricity. This study provides an effective simulation strategy for predicting the aerodynamic noise of centrifugal fans under realistic conditions.

Abstract:The boundary element method is widely used in practical engineering problems, especially in the field of acoustics. For flow-induced noise, the main target of acoustic calculations is to solve the wave equation with the flow field information. However, the sound field distribution of noncompact structures in half-space is especially complex because of the strong scattering effect, while the object surface boundary integration often brings a large workload and generates numerical singularities. In this paper, an improved boundary element method for predicting the aeroacoustic noise of noncompact structures is proposed, which can consider the characteristic distribution of sound field induced by complex structures in half-space. The smooth permeable boundary surrounding the object is used as the integration boundary, while the scattering effect of the ground boundary is investigated by combining the mirror Green's function method, and the numerical prediction of aeroacoustic noise is carried out for the dipole source and NACA0012 airfoil in half-space. Numerical results show that the far-field noise obtained by using the permeable surface is consistent with that obtained by integrating the direct object boundary under the influence of ground boundary scattering. The mirror image Green's function method is able to finely capture the ground scattering effect, which has a significant effect on the sound field as the frequency increases.
