Abstract:The multi-blade centrifugal fan is small in size, compact in structure, which has high pressure coefficient and flow coefficient, but usually has low efficiency. In order to improve the aerodynamic performance of multi-blade centrifugal fan. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method was used to simulate the flow field of the fan, and the key factors affecting the performance of the fan were analyzed. According to the controllable deceleration method, a new blade profile is designed, two airfoils are used to optimize the blade shape, and the results are compared and analyzed. The results show that the newly designed profile can improve the performance of the fan, and the appropriate airfoil blade can reduce the flow loss caused by the change of Angle of attack, improve the efficiency of the fan, and make the efficiency zone wider.

Abstract:For multi-blade centrifugal fan,boundary layer separation and inverse flow are the main factors affecting aerodynamic performance.The method of controlled velocity is applied to restrain separation flow,and the impeller blade is optimized by programming FORTRAN and the numerical simulation calculation and analysis is also carried out as well.The results show that the performance of multi-blade centrifugal fan is improved and the efficiency near the operating point is increased about 4% based on the controlled mean velocity law design.Through analyzing the velocity distribution within the impeller flow field,the boundary layer separation phenomenon near intermediate position of impeller is effectively suppressed.

Abstract:The aerodynamic design of 7-35 fans has been completed using a modern design method for centrifugal fans presented by the authors.The characteristics of the method include the introduction of 3-D viscous numerical simulation to analyze the internal complicated flow field of centrifugal fans,the consideration of the interference of its components ,the numerical prediction of fan performance and the major improvement of the existing engineering design method.Its compositive performances have reached the international advanced level.

Abstract:A method for numerically simulating the internal flow field in a typical centrifugal fan is developed.In the three-dimensional simulation,the flow field is divided into suitable computational region,the adaptive grid for computational region is constructed,the RNG k-ε turbulent model is used and the boundary condition is defined.The result of simulation is consistent with the experiment very well.The boundary layer separation and the second flow are discussed.

Abstract:Customer demands for quieter centrifugal fans in the industry have brought their noise to the forefront. It is found that dipole sources on the surfaces of the rotating impeller and volute are the main acoustic noise sources. The volute effect is seen to have a significant influence on the radiation characters of the fan, although this is frequently ignored by previous studies. Hence, the indirect boundary element method (IBEM) is employed to study the noise of an industrial forward-curved centrifugal fan and to take the effect of volute reflection and scattering of the sound wave into consideration. A large eddy simulation (LES) is used to gain reliable pressure fluctuations on the surfaces of volute and rotating blades. Then the FW-H equation and Lowson equation are applied to calculate the dipole sources on the surfaces of the volute and the blades respectively. The predicted aerodynamic noise of the fan with and without the volute is compared to experiment. The results indicate that the pressure fluctuations on the volute surfaces, especially on the tongue surface, are the main dipole source. It is also found that the application of IBEM can improve the prediction accuracy greatly, especially for the blade passing frequency and its higher harmonics.

Abstract:A numerical simulation of the internal flow field in a forward-curved centrifugal fan with high pressure has been developed with the three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations and RNG k-ε turbulence model. The comparison between computational and measured values shows good agreement and the result of numerical simulation gives a good prediction of overall performance including total pressure rise and efficiency. Some essential characteristics of the internal flow field, such as flow separation, circulatory secondary flow, and jet-wake flow, have been observed by this numerical simulation. There is separation flow in impeller passage at low flow rate, the second flow occurs in the scroll, and the jet-wake flow exists in outlet of impeller. Additionally, the flow through the gap between inlet and impeller obviously affects the flow of impeller inlet and front plate area.

Abstract:The forward-curved multi-blade centrifugal fan is widely used in the ventilation and household appliance industries with limited space due to its small size factor, high pressure coefficient, and large outlet flow coefficient. Conventional centrifugal fan structural designs rely on empirical data, resulting in drawbacks during usage such as low airflow velocity, high noise levels, and high energy consumption. In order to optimize fan structure, enhance aerodynamic performance, and seek new, effective approaches for energy efficiency and emissions reduction, this paper focuses on a combined design method that integrates scroll line design with aerodynamic performance and noise control. The goal is to propose a noise prediction and analysis method for multi-blade centrifugal fans, addressing the design contradiction between optimal fan functionality and minimal noise within limited design dimensions. The dynamic radial basis function method is introduced to investigate the geometric parameters of the scroll line, utilizing coherence analysis to identify the reasons for insufficient aerodynamic performance and noise reduction measures. Through the research, it is found that unreasonable design leads to a large turbulent vortex region within the blade passage and internal flow field, particularly involving circulation and backflow, which significantly reduces the fan's aerodynamic performance and operational efficiency. The design incorporates a composite scroll with a logarithmic spiral and circular arc integrated into one, and algorithm-based optimization of the scroll tongue, facilitating the transition of turbulence at the scroll outlet and the gap between the scroll tongue and impeller. Numerical results show an increase in airflow of 3.04 m3/min and a noise reduction of 3.79%. This indicates that the composite scroll design with a logarithmic spiral plays a dominant role in accelerating the aerodynamic performance of the scroll and reducing noise radiation.

Abstract:The paper develops a special CAD system for the centrifugal fan. The system can realize the automatic selection, aerodynamic design calculation, main parts parameterized drawing and other functions of the fan. It avoids the repetition of the manual labor and enhances the working efficiency and the cartography quality. On the base of the research on the selecting method and regularity of the main parameters of a large number of existing high performance centrifugal fans, the paper provides a new method, which determines the main geometric parameters of centrifugal impeller.

Abstract:In recent years, a series of theoretical and experimental study on aerodynamic noise control of centrifugal fan was carried out, and a simple method of identifying main aerodynamic noise sources in internal of fan and reducing the noise by determining the changes of intensity of main noise sources was pointed out. It was clearly that the main aerodynamic noise sources of centrifugal fan was on the volute but the impeller. The study on the generation and propagation mechanism of aerodynamic noise of centrifugal fan had advanced the proper control and forecast for the aerodynamic noise of centrifugal fan in theory. Based on the theory, a large number of experiments were carried out and a set of key techniques of reducing noise of centrifugal fan was formed.

Abstract:Numerical simulation of the flow field was carried out for a whole centrifugal fan to consider the interaction of three parts-inlet, impeller, and scroll. A modern optimum design method for a centrifugal fan has been presented using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique to replace the conventional method. A sample fan based on the optimum design was manufactured and tested. The numerical prediction agrees well with the test data. The excellent performance of the sample fan has proved the validity of the method adopted. Moreover, the effects of the blade inlet angle and the gap between impeller and inlet on the fan performance are quantitatively analyzed. Particularly the energy loss in every passage, including the gap loss and the leakage flow rate in the gap, are discussed in detail in the paper. It is found that the blade inlet angle and the impeller gap play an important role for fan performance.

Abstract:Starting with design of inverse proposition of axial fan, a new equation for the blade shaping is put forward. Based on shaped blade, the relationship between blade structure and aerodynamic parameters are established, then the formulas for calculation of aerodynamic parameters are derived. As an application, this new method was used to design cooling fan for large transformer. The computed results of aerodynamic characteristics meet the requirement of design, and verified the consistency between direct and inverse proposition design.

Abstract:Currently, most domestic blower speed is still in 3000r/min level. The friction loss of mechanical bearings results in their low efficiency. To further improve the efficiency of the fan, a new high-speed maglev centrifugal fan was developed specially. The design of impeller styles, structure and size are rational. 3D graphics of the impeller and volute were drawn by using solidworks software. Application of CFD flow analysis software and the SIMPLE algorithm described viscous flow field within the three-dimensional centrifugal fan. By comparing simulation data with calculated data, optimize the turbine design. The simulative results are basically consistent with the design data, which provides a theoretical basis for the design of a new high-speed magnetic levitation fans, improving the level of centrifugal fan design.

Abstract:The structural parameters of a double suction centrifugal fan are re-designed in the consideration of reducing production cost. To understand the effects of structure improvement on the fan aerodynamic performance,a research is carried out using computational fluid dynamics method. The numerical analysis of the two fan models implies that the newly designed fan is inferior to the original one in the aspect of aerodynamic performance,and the detailed flow field shows the inlet chamber and volute are responsible for the decrease of performance. Finally,some guidance on the improvement of fan aerodynamic performance is proposed.

Abstract:The certain type of centrifugal fan is optimized,relying on numerical simulation method based on analysis of flow field inside the fan.It takes three main methods: firstly,straight blade of impeller modification for the forward-swept positive curved blade,control corner low energy fluid accumulation,suppress occurrence of blade passage separation flow.Secondly,based on swept-curved impeller design to optimize modification of fan casing,to adapt to the outlet of swept-curved impeller aerodynamic conditions.Meanwhile,according to the swept-curved impeller and modification analysis of internal flow in casing,take root on impeller cutting method of optimization,to keep the total pressure and flow rate at a reasonable size.Got the Optimized design fans,while keep the total pressure and flow rate same with the prototype,the efficiency increase by more than 5%.

Abstract:The fundamental aeroacoustic equation of the centrifugal impeller was established by solving the inhomogeneous, uniformly moving medium wave equation. Then, the Lighthill's acoustic analogy theory and Powell-Howe's vortex sound theory were applied to the analyses of the aeroacoustic sources of a centrifugal fan. It is shown that the dipole and quadrupole sources are the key factors for the fan's aerodynamic sound, and the vortexes inside the fan flow field are the uppermost quadrupole sources. For aeroacoustics analysis of a centrifugal fan, we proposed a theoretical model, i.e. neglecting the influence of sound-soft boundary at the inlet and outlet of a centrifugal fan. The volute was simplified to be a cylindrical cavity with sound hard wall. Finally, Green function in the cylindrical cavity space was presented, and the aeroacoustic solution in the centrifugal fan was deduced in time-domain by using the Green function. According to the calculated results of the three-dimensional unsteady flow in a centrifugal fan, the corresponding sound field may be obtained.

Abstract:The dimensionless performance curves and design parameters for the existing centrifugal fans with high efficiency were analyzed. It shows that with the increase of the specific rate,the flow coefficient reveals an approximately linear increase, while the pressure coefficient reveals an approximately linear decrease. Based on the results,a series planning for the centrifugal fans was made,and 20 fan models were designed in the range of 10 to 90 of the specific rate. Performance experiments were car-ried out on these model fans,and corresponding performance curves were also measured. It illustrates that the layout scheme of the series fans is reasonable and covers the planning range of fan parameters.

Abstract:The method originally developed for axial rotor/stator interaction unsteady flow was modified and extended to the centrifugal turbomachinery. The Couette flow which has an accurate analytical solution was utilized to verify the above method. The two-dimensional unsteady rotor/stator interaction of a centrifugal fan with different number of blades and vanes was then calculated and analyzed under various flow rates. The results demonstrate that the modified method can well predict the complex unsteady interaction flow in the centrifugal turbomachinery stages. The predicted results also can provide useful information for the matching between impeller and vane diffuse in design.
Design of 2D Blade Curves of Centrifugal Fans by Controlled Deceleration Flow Method

Abstract:A new approach to optimum design of the two-dimensional blade curves of centrifugal fans was proposed in this study. In the present method, the orthogonal design and the three-dimensional viscous flow field computation were used to determine the optimum controlled deceleration flow in impellers and the blade curves. The blade of a high-efficiency fan was redesigned without changing its design point parameters and the profiles of its hub and shroud. The computational results for the whole fan show that the fan efficiency is improved clearly in most of the operation range, and the total pressure is increased at the design and low flow rates. Moreover, unlike the original fan, the possibility of the motor burning caused by overload can be reduced greatly. In addition, the analysis on the flow field indicates that the static pressure distribution of the flow in the impeller is more uniform and the separation region is eliminated. These results imply that this reliable method may be suitable to the design of the two-dimensional blade curves of centrifugal fans.
